Re: Redskins "Name Change" Volume 10000000
Oneida Nation realized a few years back that every time someone does a story on them complaining about the name, they get their casino in NY mentioned. Advertising for pennies on the dollar.
I still wish the media would address the Indian Reservations where the Indians themselves have named their High School mascot the Redskins.
Hey, so this high school is New York on a reservation? |
There's this chick who follows me on twitter is having a hot debate with herself, at the moment, about the Redskins. Apparently she just found it was "racist". People are fukcng trip. Like, if it's offensive and racist, no one has to sit you down and explain it. Which by the way, the etymology of the name Redskins is very dicey. From what I've read and researched, it's not at conclusive one way or the other.
I agree, so it pains me to say that the history of the name doesn't matter. If everyone in 2013 agrees that the name is offensive, it doesn't matter what people thought 150 years ago, sad to say. When a mass hysteria train gets rolling, brakes are difficult to apply. And the mass hysteria regarding the idea that "Redskins is offensive" has left the station. |

If you drop the letter K, the remaining letters spell
SNIDERS "HAIL TO THE SNIDERS" has a certain ring to it. |
Re: Redskins "Name Change" Volume 10000000
Hmmm......let me think...Washington Snider's.......sweet!

Lastly, Why can't we save time and effort and donate money to a cause or bring the Native Americans into the franchise by some means? a percentage of ownership or consultants for direction or imagery?? Fine the name offends you, well what images are you proud about? I don't think the team is the real enemies, isn't our gov't the real culprits who set the example of what is condonable to Native Americans in the 1st place?!
I think that's something Snyder should have done as soon as he bought the team. It seems that FSU basically did this and that's why they're aloud to be the Seminoles. But I guess it's too late now... |

FSU made a deal with the biggest Seminole tribe in Florida. They get a letter to the NCAA giving them the ok to keep the name from the Seminole tribe, and that specific Seminole tribe gets scholarships to attend FSU for their teenagers that graduate from high school. |

If these groups can make money then its always on time. That's what this is really about. Like someone posted earlier some of these groups protesting get free advertisement and sponsoring. As much as I use to bash Snyder its times like this I don't entirely hate his ownership. There's no way he'll willingly change the team's name. |
Re: Redskins "Name Change" Volume 10000000
So I guess like 10 people showed up for the big "protest" yesterday.

Not that I wanted to see it, but was there any coverage of the protest? was it really that small? It would seem like that should put it to rest for the season at least. |

Someone posted a pic on twitter, Cooley I think, and if you didn't know what it was supposed to be you'd have no clue it was a protest. Seriously, about 10 people with a couple of signs. Lame as can be. |

Interesting. Much ado about nothing. |

I can just imagine the headline covering the story: "Large protest over Washington Football Team's Name goes down at Lambeau; details inside." |
Re: Redskins "Name Change" Volume 10000000
Here is a pic. You can see the hand full of people holding signs the other people are just there tailgating.
If they moved and became the Los Angeles Redskins for example I'd be less inclined to remain a fan than if they stayed and changed the name to the Washington Federals.
How about this? Suppose Snyder says forget it, it's not worth it and sells the team. Someone buys the team and moves them to LA and calls them the Stars or whatever. ANd it's RG3 and company. But then the NFL grants an expansion team to DC and that team gets the Redskins name and colors, but it's different players. Who's your team?
Redskins |
Re: Redskins "Name Change" Volume 10000000
When fewer protesters show up, than the 50+ organizations claimed to support the protest, something doesn't add up.
