Not paying him 24 million next year. Hopefully he retires or he will need to be cut.
24 million is a bargain compared to what Dak, Ryan and Stafford would cost. I would trade up and draft a QB if the scouts identify one, keep Smith as a mentor and have him re-work his contract.

Re: Haskins released

Since his injury in 2018 .... weve been waiting for the 2021 offseason to finally be able to cut him.

Alex Smith, nice guy, cute family, congratulations on making 71M for 17 or so starts ... but weve circled this 2021 date on our calendar 2 years ago.

2021 FA is the time to strike. Go all in. Teams in cap hell will have to make some serious cuts to players they otherwise wouldnt. Make 2021 to 2023 a potential window to be NFCE champs for 3 years.

-------------

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/cap/2021/

^^ look at each teams cap position come 2021. 10 teams are negative and that is with only like 40 or so players counting against the cap. They need to ADD players to get to 53.

Saints?? fucked. so fucked. they are negative 96M next year w 45 players on the books

Eagles? negative 64M w 41 players

Falcons? negative 24M w 31 players

Packers and Rodgers? negative 19M w 37 players

** assumes a 175M cap, nfl is adding an extra game next year
------------------------

lets go!

All depends on what the QB plan is. If it's Alex, Kyle Allen and a rookie, no need to worry about Smith's #. If you're brining in a high priced free agent, yeah, his # becomes a concern.

RAMBLE much?!? jeesh, 47 minutes to review a player that came into the game with 6 minutes left . . . guy sure likes to Ramble . . . agree with him that that was the best QB play we've seen this year, but damn man, shorten it up a bit!!

They are all a lot better than Alex now. I don't want Dak, no way we're paying that price tag. Don't really care for Ryan either.

I'd like Stafford if available for a reasonable trade. But to get him we'd definitely have to cut Alex.

At some point, the actual return on investment needs to be part of the calculation. I don't think Alex will give anywhere near 24 million of value next year.

If we can get a rookie we believe in that can actually start, then the money isn't an issue. But if we have to go any other route it will be.

Tricky situation. Because Alex is a great guy and should go out with respect.

In my ideal world he retires, and he gets hired as like a quality control assistant or something and stays with the team. He has future OC/HC written all over him. Would be a cool succession plan in say like 5 years, for him to take over for Rivera. Would give him time to learn the ropes of coaching, although I think he'd be great at it right out the shoot.

I agree, if we can get Stafford for Smith’s contract price I’m all in. Smith would definitely would have to come of the books.

Alex Smith was never the primary choice at QB...nor was Haskins

Kyle Allen has always been the plan for this year. You bring him back

Alex can stay if only he takes a big pay cut.

A Taylor Heinicke/Kyle Allen showdown for starting QB role in 2021?

QB situation is very complex if we win Sunday and a lot easier if we lose. Those 9 or so spots change the whole equation. Sunday has impacts all over the place.

I would not pay Stafford, Ryan or Dak $40mil, no way!!
As of now the Dolphins have the 3rd pick (Texans pick) if there is a QB that the scouts think can start next year, then I pull the trigger. I would offer this year's first and a 3rd, plus either one of these DL's Matt I.,Payne or Settle. As much as I love these guys, you have to sacrifice one of them. Allen, Payne's and Settle contracts are coming up, we have proven we can play without Matt I. Also throw in Moreau.
Matt I to me has more value than both Allen and Payne simply because he can rush the best from the inside. Plus he is under contract on his 2nd deal. For those reasons I'm going to offer up Payne or Allen. I think our 1st rounder and a solid starting DT would get us Miami's 1st pick.

But it's just long overdue to go in and get a guy who can win games for us. It is time to draft a gym rat franchise QB.

IMO this is why you do not let the coach have final say. Ron being a defensive coach can say we just need a game manager so let Alex start blah blah. I just hope Ron feels the same way Ido..lol.it

I'm fine bringing them in as long as a rookie is drafted.

They wouldn’t trade Allen due to contract year and team captain. The other team would have to pay him.

I have a feeling that our starting QB next year will be a veteran FA acquisition. Especially if the team makes it to the playoffs.

Our first rounder can be better spent on a LT or MLB.

I'm cool with that, Matt Ryan would be a great 2 year fit
