Re: Around the League
Calia normally I agree with you on things but not on this. The man had a direct hand in 8 super bowl titles. Went to 12 title games overall. The cheating stuff - every coach will take advantage of a loophole if they see a grey area where things aren't clearly defined. Shit, even if things are clearly defined coaches and players will push the envelope, because winning in the NFL is a matter of inches. He paid his dues for those scandals.
If Belichick is not a first ballot HOFer, idk who is. This includes Tom Brady. Keeping him out (especially if it's for one year) just because you don't like the man is playing politics, and it casts the HOF voting process in a terrible light. The people who left him off their ballots need to do a public op-ed and explain why they did it and take the heat that they absolutely deserve. If nobody stands up for their reasoning it makes it even worse.
To be clear, it's not because I don't like him, and I do not disagree he is HOF worthy, as I noted above. But I also don't feel a lot of sympathy for a guy who was caught cheating and then less than 2 years later was caught cheating again. I know he was fined and the team was sanctioned, but I still feel like what he did was an affront to the game. In any event, until Joe Jacoby is inducted, I think the HOF is not worth giving a lot of thought. On a separate note, I'd be curious to know if anyone has heard anything further about additional coaches. I assume that Blough may rely mostly on guys already in the building, as he has been here, but I'd be curious whether our new DC has leanings about defensive coaches he wants to retain or bring from outside. |
What’s next a snub for Brady?
I hate that I have to defend a prick like BB but here we are.
Agreed. As a person he's incredibly unlikeable, but as a coach he's on Mount Rushmore. Maybe his shitty personality is what made him so effective as a coach? Idk. But we all know it's just a matter of time until he gets in. To deny him first ballot is just being petty as fuck. Calia I agree Joe Jacoby should be in, despite my not being born until the late 80's when you have players of LT's caliber speaking up for him I think that speaks to how much he deserves to be in. But we can sit here all day and talk about HOF slights. BB is just the next to be added to the list. |
What’s next a snub for Brady?
I hate that I have to defend a prick like BB but here we are.
I too agree. Is he a nice person? Maybe to his family, but like many that get to the top of their vocation, there has to be a hard edge and a thick skin, so his public persona goes against him somewhat. But his players and coaches love him, so he can't be a total asshole. Has he been a friend to the media? No, he definitely hasn't. But his job was always to deal with the media, not be their friend. If they've used that against him, that's where it gets petty. Is he an ethical person? Well that's where it gets grey because he cheated twice, so that stain will always be with him. Possibly the biggest issue with those events is his lack of real contrition. Was he adequately punished? This too is grey. Spygate - financially yes (and that's assuming the money came 100% from his own pocket), but maybe he deserved a suspension. The rest of the punishment was on the team and while that lost of a pick had an impact, it's one year in many so, for hm personally little overall impact. Deflategate - he wasn't really implicated but it's hard to believe he was totally oblivious, but we'll never know. Again it was the team that suffered not BB directly. Is he a great coach? Absolutely, possibly the GOAT. He holds all the key records as a coach. It's doubtful any coach will ever do what he did again. And even, who's to say he's finished in the NFL? Overall the bad can't outweigh the good in this instance. Whether you like him or not, you can't deny his achievements, and if this was about pettiness/vindictiveness then the voters and the process needs a long hard look (the HoF has said it is investigating). Whether he was punished enough is debatable, but you can't punish him twice for the same incident, especially in a process whereby he can't defend himself. |
Re: Around the League
If you’re delaying BB’s entry due to Spygate; don’t you have to do the same thing for Tom and deflategate?

Good article here 'explaining' the situation https://www.kansascity.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/vahe-gregorian/article314488692.html
Interesting mention of Jim Tyrer, who I'd never heard about. Certainly a HoF level career but never proposed because of how he killed his wife and himself. If it was CTE, as strongly suspected, that could put him in the same conversation as BB and Brady; did something bad but does it outweigh the good? And in his case, it may even be a tragedy rather than an intentional act. The way this reads the whole voting system is messed up. |
Re: Around the League
The Paul Allen estate will likely put the Seahawks up for sale after the Superbowl. The date has passed where they had to give Washington 10% of proceeds.
I bet you Jeff Bezos will be the most likely buyer. |

Re: Around the League
He was already punished by the league. I can’t stand the holier than thou attitude of Hall voters. Do your job and vote in a coach that has 8 rings and a stellar resume. It’s petty and ridiculous.
If I can add spygate was and is BS. As Jimmy Johnson said all teams did it . BB was a master at using the NFL rules to his advantage and he got an NFL HOF snub for it. I agree, whatever he did he was already punish for it and IMPO if you do it to him then Kraft and Brady should face the same, anyone think that's gonna happen? |

See the article I posted. There's no position/proof either way on whether it was Spygate. Whilst I am sceptical that no voters held it against him, the voting system doesn't help. It might even be that some voters assumed everyone else would vote for him (or enough voters to swing it). Assuming the HoF investigation isn't a whitewash, best we wait on it. at the moment we're all reacting to the press storied. There's no proof of anything. |

Re: Around the League
Goodell claims NFL has nothing do with Hall of Fame vote process and Belichick getting denied. Utterly illogical and asinine.

Re: Around the League
Kraft denied HOF admittance also:
https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/47812233/sources-robert-kraft-not-voted-hall-fame-class-26 Guess winning a lot of super bowls and dynasties aren't as important as they used to be. Wow. |
Re: Around the League
Obviously the voting process is flawed but c’mon, it’s still absolutely ridiculous these guys aren’t in.

Re: Around the League
I have to wonder whether given all the bad press on this - which will only be magnified by the fact that the Pats are in the SB - will causes them to redo the voting process. Seems obviously flawed. Not Pro Bowl bad (Shadeur - lol), but bad. On the latter point, if I were a GM, I’d have a flat prohibition on any bonus money being tied to a pro bowl nod. Complete joke.
