What would happen if Luck pulls an Elway/Eli Manning and wants to play for his old coach in SF? Could happen.
Shanahan inherited a better defense than Harbaugh did period end of sentence. What he chose to do w/ it is the real story.
I'm going from a personnel perspective, not "stats", . Their secondary was complete ass, but yet they were absolutely dominant against the run in 2009 and 2010. The latter signifies that their front 7 was well off enough to pull that off. What put the 49ers over the top is the marked improvement in their pass defense, which the additions of Rogers and Aldon Smith bolstered.

Our front 7 was reaching the point where it would soon be worthy of the label "unacceptable", with Rak and Fletch being the only exceptions. Our secondary was decent and better than the 49ers, but that's not saying much.

Had Shanahan decided to keep the 4-3, not only did he need to find a suitable coordinator(easier said than done), but he would have had to replenish the Dline* and fill the absolutely GAPING void that was at SOLB.

The reason our yardage total was so low was that Greg Blache is the ****ing Jacques Martin of defense. An excessively conservative scheme that can limit yards even with mediocre personnel because it is designed to give up long, time-consuming drives to limit points.

*Griff was injury vulnerable, Haynesworth was a lazy flake even under Blache, and weak sauce Kedric Golston was our "depth". Phillip Daniels, while effective, retired 2 years later. Andre Carter, while good, was certainly getting up their in age as well.

I am sure it could have been easier to find some band aids for the 4-3 defense, while the offense was being rebuilt; than completely overhauling the defense and putting band aids on a terrible offense.

That being said, this team still doesn't have a good NT. I like Cofield, but he's not making the impact that a true 3-4 NT should be making. He probably be better suited to play as a 3-4 DE.

Transition or no transition, the D was most certainly not in a state that it could be neglected for a couple years and be expected to perform at a highly level. No SOLB, aging line, suspect FS, okay OLB.

Not only that, we were not in good position to draft offensive players. 2010's 2nd round had very few offensive players taken during that round. Had we kept that pick, the pick ought to have went to a defensive player, i.e Lamarr Houston or Nate Allen.

Adding band aids to a terrible offense didn't help either, and Shanahan was brought in to fix the defense. Speaking of defense, with that 2nd rounder, MS could have picked up T. Cody and solve our NT hole for years to come (he is now the starting NT for the Ravens). And actually, he could have traded down to get him, and acquire more picks in the process.

Re: What's your take on our coaching?

Our DL has not been a strength this year. It doesn't have to be for the defense to work, but we tied up a lot of money in it, and there has not been a great performer in it.

Quietly, Stephen Bowen is getting outproduced by Kedric Golston over this four game losing streak.

I think Cofield's performance has been really underrated this season. Sure, I'd agree that he's not a traditional NT and that any time a defense has run defense issues, you point the finger first at the nose guard, but we were a horrible defensive team on first and ten last year. We've been a really good one this year. The biggest difference has been Barry Cofield keeping the pocket a dangerous place for quarterbacks to step up. He's doing a great job protecting our overpaid secondary on early downs and distances.

With Bowman instead of McIntosh/Perry Riley, we'd have something close to the league's best defense right now. Who knows what our scouting opinion was of him, but Riley's been worthless.

Or even Daryl Washington of Arizona. Last draft was a great year for 3-4 ILBs. And we got Perry Riley.

This is interesting stuff so do we say Cofield isn't a pocket collapsing NT but a prevent guy? Like preventing QB scrambles or stepping up in the pocket to extend a play?

Shanahan was taken in to build a winner. His mistake in his first year was picking up a bunch of lemons(a used car with problems is defined as a lemon) and trying to build something with them.

His reputation was built on his stellar offenses, not his defensive decisions. In fact, even this year's defense was well beyond my expectations when he was first hired since the Broncos' D in 2008 was purely awful. He has done pretty well this season given his poor reputation on that side of the ball(now maybe Allen helped, but w/e). And I believe we are close to establishing something really good on D. We just need a NT and ILBs(we would have needed a DT and maybe 3 LBs if we were still running a 4-3 at this juncture).

Cofield is very active for a NT and draws a double team based on his ability to show up on film. That sounds great, but ultimately, he gets moved around a bunch in the running game, particularly on draws. It's not a lack of discipline, it's just his player type. He's disruptive, but not particularly quick or strong for the position.

The true test for Cofield is if he wears down over the course of the season or not. If he's playing like this in December, I'd say you have the long term solution at NT. If he's just getting knocked around, they'll need someone else to execute the defense.

That's...just...nonsense. Remember had we built the defense around AH (before all the drama) the DL situation was sublime. AC next to AH was amazing. Orakpo could have held down SAM or even become the LDE and then Rocky would be here as WIL regardless. The only absolute need to round out the 4-3 was a legit FS.

More importantly...this is an absurd debate the opportunity cost of blowing up the defense is painfully obvious.

Bottome line is Mike is a megalomaniac and will force the "system" whatever it happens to be on the roster regardless of opportunity cost, scheme fit etc.

I think Mike/Bruce walked into a hornets nest and came out alive ... they managed to get rid of the problems while building the RIGHT way. This season had us all drinking mad kool-aid at 3-1 and that's OK. Our defense is playoff caliber and you know what , if we are building our YOUNG defense first that's fine with me. Helu, Hankerson, Austin, Paul, Davis, Williams, Monty (his is a better C than you think), Paulsen, hell i'll even throw in Torrain & Hightower (just have a feeling he will be back & Cooley) .. this is a young offense learning while we have a young defense that has learned .. Bowen(only 4-5 years in league) , Jenkins next year ?? , Landry, OJ I like .. Gomes is going to be special I think . Love Neild at NT ... Kerrackpo are among leagues best .. d-hall has a solid 4 years left being a top CB .. Wilson will work out fine ... we can probably pick up a solid CB in free agency next year .. focus draft on QB ... How about the dude from Baylor .. Griffin III .... give some damn patience Redskins Nation .. you bitch about change so for once give us a second to let Shanny roll with the punches for MINIMUM 3 YEARS i'm down for all 5. Either way, could be worse, you could be the EAGLes who spent millions upon millions and I believe have the same record as us ? Good luck to Becky to get a W down in Miami .. 4-5 with Dallas on the plate .. who knows ... take it in people we are rebuilding and it's going to pay off dramatically for years to come.

Admittedly, I worded that badly. I made it sound like we were set in the secondary and depthwise
The point is, establish the front 7, and team can at least bear the poorness of the secondary behind them with a punishing pass rush and an impenetrable run defense. NT is the key to that, and we need a more prototypical NT to complement Cofield. Rocky and Fletch might need successors in the near future, hence the need for ILBs.

You're use of opportunity cost confuses me. If the opportunity cost of our transition was to stay with the 4-3, we have to look at the production(i.e sacks, turnovers, pressures, coverage) of the various schemes(it would have been new anyway) not just in the short term, where the where one of the inputs(labor, capital) are fixed, but in the long term, where the any input can be modified. The switch to the 3-4 could be considered a very costly investment of sorts(similar to an investment in a new plant, i.e new technology), except poor play is the negative outcome instead of the loss of money. However, if this investment would then help reach a level of productivity well past the old levels, then there is certainly a case to be made for making such an investment.

Also, there is another alternative that could have been the best one(the opportunity cost), which is making a more gradual transition to the 3-4.

I know it is really hard to notice the production of 3-4 NTs, but seeing Cofield getting manhandled by the Giants' rookie center in week one was very disappointing. I think he's had some good games here and there, but I just don't see him having the same effect that a NT like Hampton or Wilfork (when the Pats ran the 3-4). I just think that Cofield would be more productive as a DE instead of NT.

"They managed to get rid of the problems while building the RIGHT way" They got rid of a few problem children; that is for sure and that is surely positive. Building a team where the QB options are Rex Grossman and John Beck is NOT - - let me repeat NOT - - the RIGHT way. Building a team that carries 8 or 9 WRs (only one of whom is worth the powder it would take to blow him away) and 2 back-up OL is not the RIGHT way.

Not sure he is a "top CB" now. 64 CBs start every week in the NFL. Just a guess but there are at least a dozen - - and probably 20 that are as good or better than he is.

Re: What's your take on our coaching?

I remember when Dick Vermeil was hired to coach the Rams in 1997, here is his record.
1997 ( 5-11)
1998 (4-12)
1999 (13-3) Super Bowl Champs
His first 2 seasons everyone was calling for him to be fired, he cant coach any more etc...
He left to coach KC and here is his record
2001 (6-10)
2002 (8-8)
2003 (13-3)
2004 (7-9)
2005 (10-6)

I think Dick Vermeil is simular to Mike Shannahan during his career. Dick Vermeil won 1 Suoer Bowl with Kurt Warner and had success with Trent Green in KC.
Vermeil coached the Eagles from 1976-1982 and went to the Super Bowl in 1980 with Ron Jaws as his QB, They lost to the Raiders. Looking at his success Vermeil had a Great QB in Kurt Warner 2 good QB's in Green and Jaws.
Shanny needs to get his QB to get this franchise back to winning.

My intuition is after Shanny leaves or gets fired there will be disclosure at some point he wasn't doing much with the team. The players clearly aren't motivated, inspired by him and there's no way the offensive scheme and overall coordination could really be this bad with a full-time HC.

...Mike has always been a money guy and I really doubt he's much concerned with the team's performance while earning a guaranteed $5 mil per year. Perfect circumstances gave him two championships.

My sentiment exactly. How to you watch film and not know McNabb throws dirt balls, or Grossman throws INTs for no reason, or Doughty is horrible at safety. They act like they are surprised at these things.

Re: What's your take on our coaching?

Mike Shanahan is a very good coach. But his job becomes 1000% harder when he makes personnel decisions. If he concentrated on just being the head coach, then the Redskins would be a much better team. Since Bruce Allen is the GM, I've always wondered just how much he's involved in player evaluations, scouting potential collegiate players and free agents, and acquiring players in general. I'm not saying that a head coach can't be the head coach and be in charge of his roster, but does anyone have enough braincells to be able to do both jobs?

I say do it the way it's supposed to be done. Let Bruce Allen choose the players, and let Mike Shanahan coach them.

Last yr the skins & texans were 2 of the worst if not the worst defenses in football.Skins had switched to 3-4 as we all know and it didnt work out well.
This yr the texans switch to a 3-4 with a new coach and no offseason to work on it.Theyre number 1 in the nfl on defense without their star player Mario Williams. So in less than a season Wade phillips has turned that defense around and we still suck.
Do you think its coaching? I dont see a big talent difference in the 2 teams.Or is it our offense sucks so ****ing bad the defense is not getting enough rest?

Like the 81 yarder that put Miami up 20-9? That one was a classic letdown from the offense. Not lettin em off the hook, but I wasn't surprised given the circumstance. We score on that drive rather than a rex INT, it's a different defense.

There have been games, e.g. Iggles 1st half, where they've been slow to get going or adjust. I'm not saying I want more 0 blitz but i have noticed its absence the last few weeks. Wonder if shanahan is micro-managing the D more?

Last yr the skins & texans were 2 of the worst if not the worst defenses in football.Skins had switched to 3-4 as we all know and it didnt work out well.
This yr the texans switch to a 3-4 with a new coach and no offseason to work on it.Theyre number 1 in the nfl on defense without their star player Mario Williams. So in less than a season Wade phillips has turned that defense around and we still suck.
Do you think its coaching? I dont see a big talent difference in the 2 teams.Or is it our offense sucks so ****ing bad the defense is not getting enough rest?
Well the Texans had a good offense already, but they couldn't get a defense decent enough to help them win games when it counted. But you are right, I think Phillips has done a good job in the 3-4 conversion. I wonder if he has done a better job at adapting his scheme to his players, rather than the other way around.

Thats true but there's a lot of pressure on the D because they know they pretty much have to pitch a shut-out in order for the Skins to have a shot at winning.

My frustration with Mike is building. I think as the "big picture" goes he's wasted two years with the QB situation and (therefor) to a large extent the offense. To be sure Kyle has much to do with the QB mess, assuming he's the primary reason we have Rex on the roster at all. But at the end of the day Mike is still the HC. The other frustration with Mike is our lack of preparedness, especially on offense and teams. The delay of game today on the field goal turned punt is a prime example.

In general I don't feel like the offense consistently works together and fights to win. When Helu took a big shot today on that short pass (he couldn't make the catch and got the wind knocked out of him) just one player, a lineman I think, came over to check on him, and that guy didn't even help Helu up. WTF?! This kid is a promising rookie and just got plastered. I think the lack of camaraderie on offense is a symptom of Mike's failure in leadership.

On the defense there's plenty of camaraderie and these guys are definitely fighting to win. Haslett is a great motivator IMHO. His scheme is suspect part of the time, but I will go on record Haslett has exceeded my expectations.

So, I'm disappointed in the Shanahans and pretty damn impressed with Haslett. Very curious to know what ya'll are thinking...so discuss!

PS I think Mike's history as a returning 2X championship HC has to be taken into account when assessing his performance here. I definitely expected him to come in with a solid plan of action and have the offense, especially the QB situation, moving in a better direction by now.
I believe that Mike is doing everything he possibly can to rebuild this team. We, as Redskins fans, are just too darned impatient to see the process through. As I have always said, we don't know what truly goes on on the sidelines. We don't know what goes on behind closed doors. With that said, we have to take a look at the big picture and everything that has happened to this team. The injuries have been horrid this year. Can't really blame the coaching staff for that. If the Redskins don't have those injuries, things could be a lot different for this team. IMHO, Mike is as much in teacher mode for these young players right now as he is in coaching mode. He wants these players to work hard and to play smart. He wants to see how they react in certain situations on the field. Yes, this stuff should be seen during preseason, but in all honesty, I don't think you can clearly get the full answer until you put these players in those situations when it actually counts.

With that said, I really don't have an opinion either way. I don't believe one can truly assess this coaching staff until all the pieces are in place. I think until the Redskins find their franchise QB, build depth on that OL, have their players in skilled positions healthy, then how can we really truly assess Mike Shanahan? I'll admit, I'm a bit skeptical on the Kyle philosophy meshing well with the Mike (run first) philosophy, but I'm willing to keep things as is until we get better players on this team. I believe it's just as simple as that. I think you assess the coaching staff once the rebuilding has been "completed". In other words, I'd wouldn't assess the coaching staff until season number three has been completed.

Tubby's D is like a 4-3 in some respects. Interesting breakdown from a Texans fan in the link below.

Exactly, Mike already gets a free pass for this season. Very few coaches would be able to turn what this team currently is into a winner. Our team is dreadful from the center to the quarterback, we're absolute garbage right now.

Our defense on the other hand would undeniably be in the top 5 with a little bit of help. There are a lot of teams that would switch defenses with us.

Phillip's 3-4 would fit our team better. Especially with Cofield at NT.

Me and my dad were talking last night and he thought if we are at a top 5 pick next year shannahan will be gone and he thinks Gruden will be our coach due to the fact he has worked with Allen before in Tampa.

This season is going to parallel my uncle's last year at Ohio St. He lost Chris Carter for taking the money from that agent, then lost most of his offensive line to year ending injuries before the Big Ten season started. The D, anchored by Chris Spielman kept the team in games til week 8 when they just collapsed from having the pressure put on them the whole year. They regrouped for the U of M game, but not til my UNcle got the boot. You can't expect the D to be on the field for so long in game after game without reaching a breaking point. Haslett needs to feel a little heat, but the Shanahans need to be scorched then.

Re: What's your take on our coaching?

I can be a patient man and give Shanny two years to give us something that resembles a competitve football team. I am not even talking about playoffs, just competitive like ole Norv's 7-9 to 9-7 seasons, which signals we are indeed moving in some positive direction. If that doesn't happen then we were hoodwinked again by Snyder, with yet another sexy franchise move. Asking for a competitive team next year might be asking too much since we would have a rookie QB, but his sophmore season there has to be some marked improvement. We can't abandon retooling the D either, as we need to revamp both the secondary and LB corp.
