Re: Redskins vs. Bengals Post Game Reaction
Just read through a bunch of posts and heres my 2 cents:
- Carlos is gone. Get over it. As is LaRon. Same with Sean Taylor, RIP. Same with Ryan Clark. Obviously guys don't pan out or play the way you hope and need a change of scenary to be good somewhere else. - I hate DHall with a passion. Last year I wanted him to be cut. Having said that, he has been playing real well this year in my opinion. He went against AJ Green today. Green is a top 5 WR IMO. I'm not expecting DHall to go all Darrell Revis over him. DHall did all he could today. Oh and it was Gomes who got blown by the first play of the game, NOT Dhall. - Why the hell are people here already wanting to change BACK to a 4-3?!? We just spent all this time and money on 3-4 and now because a couple teams run the 4-3 we should run it again?!? PLEASE. This is yet another fan overreaction to a loss. You all should be happy we have a franchise QB, not pissed that our defense sucks. Injuries happen. Theres only so many guys in FA with a limited salary cap and in the draft that we can get to fix the problem. - Trading Orakpo? He's probably our best defensive player. Yes I know Londons great, but London won't be a star 3 years from now. Thats the difference is the present to the future. It was one game. Yes, Rob Jackson looks good, but AGAIN its 1 (one) UNO! Game. Next week we'll be hearing "Cut Rob Jackson!" with this crowd. - You all don't like Haslett. I get it. He doesn't 'adjust' during games. I can see where you're coming from, but Haslett or no Haslett, if you have no secondary, you're not going to be good on defense. - SmootSmack for those who maybe wondering for next year, who are some good 3-4 DCoordinator candidates? Or should we assume Raheem becomes the new DC? And if Raheem does, would he change the defense from 3-4 to 4-3 since he's a 4-3 known guy? |
Re: Redskins vs. Bengals Post Game Reaction
Yes, the offense could be better. Right now the only way this offense thrives is with RG3 running often, keeping the defense on its heals, but also resulting in a lot of big hits to our franchise QB. No starting caliber QB can keep this up for a season. (Tebow probably could for example, but he's not starting caliber.) Morris is good, but RG3 is at least half his "goodness" so far in the regular season. The play-calling and scheme, up until the point RG3 starts taking off every 2nd or 3rd play, are as bad is it gets in pro football. When he's not looking to run, the offense looks the same as the last couple years, when you could tell the defense was (correctly) reading every two out of three plays Kyle called.
RG3 is a superstar for as long as he's healthy, but otherwise...we're three years in with this regime and have only one starting-caliber OT on the roster (who's now injured) and the best downfield targets so far this season are guys the current regime inherited. And sticking with the big picture theme, the defense is garbage by any measure, including when compared to the one Shanny and Co inherited. Was that defense older? Sure. Was it in need of some updating? Definitely. Was it also vastly superior to what we've (collectively) seen with Shanahan/Haslett? If you even waiver in saying yes...the kool-aid is strong within you my friend. Going into this season I knew Mike would never coach another SB team again, but now I suspect he'll never coach a winning team again either. |
Re: Redskins vs. Bengals Post Game Reaction
Gomes was saying he was playing too close to the line on the first play and td of the game. And Crawford said it was his fault too that he didn't look back for the ball (which he thinks is his strength) when he got beat for the last td.
So Rich Campbell (who's work I like) uses these examples to put some of the blame on the players, I think he's absolutely wrong. They didn't do what they needed to do, but it's because they didn't prepare well enough. And whose main responsibility is to prepare them? You got it - Haslett. The articles keep mentioning his lack of in game adjustments, but his pregame planning and preparation have been as bad. |
Re: Redskins vs. Bengals Post Game Reaction
The secondary is playing with poor judgement but, the lack of pass rush isn't helping. Unfortunately this team roster breakdown doesn't suport a switch to the 4-3 especeially considering the reash of injuries. I'd like to see Haslett/Morris gradually implement some 4-3 looks to see if guys perform better in that scheme with Kerrigan and Jenkins at DE, Cofield and Bowen at DT, Riley and Jackson at OLB, and Fletcher at MLB.

Re: Redskins vs. Bengals Post Game Reaction
I want to take a different angle during my post game review.
-RGIII is one TOUGH SOB! He took some serious shots today, and kept shaking them off. My main concern is that this is going to take its toll after a few more games like this. We have got to find a way to lessen the amount of direct impact hits he's taken. Rookie censation or not, nobody can take to much of that (Vick) before it has long term effects. -Morris is a f-ing beast, and is looking like a steal from the 6th round. -No punts blocked! -The refs still sucked, but at least this group tried to get it right. -Doesn't look like Trents injury will keep him out too long (his replacement looked like a pregnant stripper with an eye patch) - Even with Orakpo and Carriker gone, we still managed to put a little pressure on them. Glass half-full guys. We can't expect to play lights out with 3 starters out on D, and 2-3 at a time on O. We are getting to where we need to be, I just think we ran the ball a little too much. There were 3-4 short screen passes, but other than that we didn't do much to take some pressure off the QB. The triple-option was nice, but 2-3 plays in a row was over the top. HTTR!!! |
Re: Redskins vs. Bengals Post Game Reaction
There is a lot to discuss, mostly bad. The good is that RGlll is the real deal, Morris looks like a true bell cow, the defensive front 7 looks pretty impressive, and Cundiff is a solid kicker. Unfortunately, it's a win now league, their not, and it's Shanahan's 3rd year here.
What's most troubling is the team is supposed to carry the rookie quarterback while he acclimates to the NFL, and instead he is carrying the team on his back. 3 years Shanahan has now had to mold a strong base to work with, and this team looks worse than the Cerato-Zorn teams if not for Griffin's phenominal play. Shanahan and his staff have done a lousy job of surrounding their franchise Qb with enough quality talent to protect him and ease him into the league. He's already in the fire, and it looks like it's only going to get hotter. |
Re: Redskins vs. Bengals Post Game Reaction
In my opinion, Kyle showed true desperation in this game with the triple option. That's an ace you hold up your sleeve for a playoff or big December game to surprise the opponent in a must win situation. Not in the 3rd game of the season with your franchise quarterback. That card has been played now, and we can only guess at what the next Grif gimmick will be. I think Kyle is relying too much on his athletic Qb's ability, as well as putting him at unneccessary risk, to make himself look better. This is not about the future, this is about keeping his job and avoiding criticism.
The book has been written early on Griffin, which is treat him like Vick, meaning take away his outside escape, and pound the crap out of him at every opportunity. Vick is already shell-shocked, and I believe Foles will be running that Philly offense sooner than later. You can bet the house that Schiano's Buccaneer defense will hit him high and hard every chance they get. Griffin is already showing signs of frustration. Even in high school, we were taught to slam the qb on all option plays. It's a free kill shot. No way RG can take the abuse if this keeps up, and now every team on the schedule is laying in wait. The offensive line is, as usual, a disaster. Everyone killed Cerato for the mess he made of the 2009 O-line. This line is worse. While the interior linemen are decent at their run blocking, they cannot keep a clean pocket at all in pass pro. The tackles are a mess, and it wasn't great when Trent was in, but now? Griffin constantly has to make something out of nothing. It's time to just call Compton up, and give him the learning experience. He at least has a potential future here. Polumbus and Black will be gone next year if not sooner. They haven't even seen the elite pass rushers yet, and they are getting roasted by no names. |
Re: Redskins vs. Bengals Post Game Reaction
When we win after showing pistol it's all great, but when we lose after showing the triple option it's doom and gloom.
I'm sure the Redskins have plenty for more tricks up their sleeves and I have no problem with using the triple option yesterday. Games in December won't matter anyway if you can't win in September. I think the offense we ran in the 2nd half yesterday helped spread the defense out, helped our OL (to an extent) and stretching the field was/is key to the success of this team. My beef against it is that I kept waiting for it to set up something "conventional" which I'm not sure I totally saw. Well, correction, I think the Hankerson PI is what I was waiting for. And when it failed, they didn't go back to it. |
Re: Redskins vs. Bengals Post Game Reaction
I'm of ther opinion that Haslett is on the hot seat right now. Meaning he won't last the season with another game or 2 like these last 2. Rumors have already stated that Morris called plays in St. Louis, and their is clear dissension amongst the defensive unit, particularly the secondary. Morris and Haslett cannot coexist for long with this disarray in my opinion.
The Bucs game next week is very winnable on paper. Freeman has been mediocre at best this year, after a very disappointing year last season. They do have Vincent Jackson as a legitimate threat, but he has been substandard thus far. Martin is a decent back, but not very threatening. That's pretty much it for their offense. If Freeman and Jackson light this defense up like a centennial fireworks display, I don't see Haslett keeping his job here past that game. Change will have to be made as Shanahan has to feel the fire burning below him by now. I didn't think Mike could lose his job this year since he has Griffin and a Snyder committment, but I didn't think this was a 5-6 win team either. I honestly believe 7 wins keeps him safe, 5 gets him fired, and 6 might be a push. And at some point late in the season, Dan is going to have a one on one with Robert Griffin. And Mike's job most likely will hang in the balance. Not for nothing, but a potential new coach was the guy calling plays for Dalton today, Jay Gruden, 45, John's younger brother. Haslett had him as a coach in the UFL and mentored him. Gruden beat Jim like a rented mule, and is clearly going to be a head coach somewhere next season as he is on top of the Hot list. There's also a Bruce Allen connection, but we'll have to wait and see what happens. |

Shanahan is washed up. I could ask him to lend me $1M and he would likely say "no". Call a timeout, and he would quickly oblige.

Re: Redskins vs. Bengals Post Game Reaction
RGIII needs to adjust his playing style. He is taking too many big hits. Right now he is an injury waiting to happen.

And when it failed, they didn't go back to it.[/quote] It's doom and gloom because the team is unnecessarily exposing their future on a gimmick offense that has absolutely no chance for continued success. It's not building towards anything, there's nowhere to go with it. It's worse than play action because it takes too long, it's worse than rolling out because the Qb has to focus on 3 different things while also avoiding the inevitable pounding he will surely receive. Spreading the field is fine, but do it with receivers, formations, and well designed playcalls. Teach the kid something constructive. There is nothing to setup with it but more option plays and misdirection. The defense could care less about misdirection if they can get a free shot at the Qb. Let em have 10 yards, we'll take out their Qb. It's a 1 time gimmick that only works because no one would expect such foolishness with your star player. Tebow is different, he is expendable plus he is freaking huge to take some punishment. Newton can run the read, but even he gets slammed. He is way bigger than Griffin, and that is already getting old for Carolina. I can all but guarantee every team in the league will take notice of this, and will be laughing their a$$es off behind closed doors. The Buccaneers will be taking head shots if they try that crap next week. Now he is going to get hit even when he doesn't have the freaking ball. Can we expect the Swinging Gate with Griffin next? They are supposed to be teaching him how to be an NFL quarterback. Yes, they can use his natural abilities, but his safety is paramount. It should be building blocks, one step leading to another. This is a gimmick and a desperation ploy because the offensive line is a joke, and Kyle has no excuses now for ineptitude. They might have drawn it up at halftime on the chalkboard because they had no answers. They clearly didn't practice it sufficiently because it looked so haphazard. Why do you think Coughlin was so upset about the kneel down? Because he knows he has to keep his Qb healthy. It's coaching 101. |

Re: Redskins vs. Bengals Post Game Reaction
I dunno. People calling for Haslett to be replaced (I'm one of them, never liked the guy) is one thing. People asking for him to be replaced by a secondary coach who's unit is the worst in the league (by far) is a completely other thing. Its ridiculous. Morris should NOT be promoted. He shouldn't be demoted either though. If anyone gets a pass, its him, for walking into a completely lackluster situation with our secondary. But his ineffectiveness, even though its not completely his fault, is the reason he should not take the defensive helm, even away from Haslett. I think we need a fresh young coach as our new defensive coordinator, plus, look at it this way, he might be cheaper, and it cannot get any worse than it already is.
Also, I think its time to start SCOURING the waiver wire and player releases to find someone with a smidgen of talent. |

Re: Redskins vs. Bengals Post Game Reaction
Defenses are going to want to tee off on RG3 no matter what. Comparing getting hit on running a play vs. a kneel down seems a bit ridiculous to me.

After a night to sleep on it...
The good... 1. Our rush defense has been superb this year. Kudos to Riley, Jackson, Coefield, Gomes, D Hall, Bowen, Fletch all had coming up putting big hits on the law firm, causing his first fumble and playing well in run support. 2. RG3 showed a ton of poise leading us back to tie the game. Hasnt been mentioned, but damn impressive. Kudos to Kyle coming out of half and changing it up using Banks. 3. Fred Davis had a solid game, finally getting involved. 4. Alfmo 8th in the league in rushing. Not bad, would like to see that 4.3 get better. Bad: 1. Jordan Black and Tyler Polumbus would NOT be on any other roster but ours. They are a f*cking embarressment. 2. Too many big plays in the secondary. Its not just D Hall folks, in fact he probably played the best out of everyone yesterday. Gomes, Hall, Wilson, Crawford all burnt for huge plays. 3. Coming out flat on offense the first half is entirely on Kyle 4. Anybody see Robinson or Morgan yesterday? I didnt. Except when Santana Moss almost got killed on a screen I saw Morgan whiff bad on a block. Pierre on the sideline is killing us. 5. Refs still terrible. |

As far as his job on the field this year, I have nothing but respect for what Kyle has done this year in terms of integrating Robert Griffin and Points Scored into the same offense. But he lost his cool at the end of the game. I don't think it was as costly as Morgan's penalty because things were already pretty dire before the flag. But unsportsmanlike conduct -- even if you feel the other guys are screwing you -- is not something you can take there. You just can't. You have got to be really careful. Which is what Morgan and Kyle did wrong. They let their emotions take over. |

Well it went from RGIII scrambling out of bounds giving the Skins 1st and 10 from about the 20 with a great chance to tie the game to 3rd and a coons ass, then false start time run off end of game. |

The problem is that he's exposing his young QB to take some vicious hits (legal ones) that's going to end with him being out with injury. He can't keep this up for long no matter how much he says he can. This kid is smart enough to run a conventional offense with plays leaning towards his talents. (rollouts/bootlegs) Really, with our run game, no need to expose our QB if you don't have to. |
