They have a lot of good coaches in the wings. I think if we don't grab them then someone else will. I just don't want a retread situation.

yeah I say no to Gruden or cowher

jerry or jerruh jones once said "No super bowl winning coach has ever won a SB with more than 1 team as a HC"

Only coach I would consider taking over for Shanahan is Briles

Your conciseness on the fork in the road and which direction you're looking. I thought you'd back Shanny to the (bitter) end.

I don't want a college coach , historically they don't work out. Has he ever coached in the NFL?

Historically a lot of college coaches do work out. It's about finding the right one. The guy averages over 700 yards of offense a game in college and was RG3 Head Coach.

Here is a nice article on him about his playbooks.

ESPN NCAAF Briles' offense built around each QB

Not every college coach is Spurrier.

I mean strictly college coaches meaning no NFL exp before. Who has worked out besides JJ?

NTM Briles is almost 60, we need a young gun in here

I guess i'll never get the obsession over "young guns" people thrive for. If the coach can coach.. Who cares his age? He's not going out and catching passes.

true but teams lately seem to be thriving under younger coaches,

PITT, BAL , SF etc.

Why should it be any different for a coach than a player? You see teams not re-sign a player in his final year to see if he proves he deserves another contract. To me, it's step up or step out. He doesn't deserve a contract extension at this point, and to be sure he's up to the challenge of proving himself.

In each of those situation, the coach inherited a team that wasn't a complete mess and had talent. Had any of the Harbaugh's inherited this mess, I assure you they wouldn't have had the same results.

Re: Who's your pick's for next HC, DC and OC?

Because a coach has a greater impact. A FA isn't going to reconsider signing if Moss is in his last year but he might if Shanahan does

You're probably right.

So do you let him walk and promote Kyle or clean house entirely?

Well, it's a simple as this. Let's say you have two head coaches, one in his early 30's, the other in his early 60's. Let's say both have the same amount of success in their first five years of coaching the Redskins - both are able to bring a Super Bowl championship to Washington. The coach in his early 30's wants to coach until he hits retirement age, the other the same. Which one do you want? Do you want a coach who's going to coach for a few years and retire, or the one who could possibly be successfully coaching your team for the next 30 years? I think about how great it would be to even have a championship coach for a ten year tenure, but could you imagine one being a championship coach for 30 years? It would justify the last 22 years of suckiness we've had to endure.

I think we all just want a coach that knows how to win games in todays NFL consistently. That is why coordinators from winning teams are always so highly valuable... They know what it takes to win.

SmootSmack, do you have any favorites as to whom you'd like to see coaching in Washington? Someone who you think would be a realistic choice and give this franchise the best chance at success? I hear names that the forum throws out here and there, like Greg Roman, Bill Cowher, and Jon Gruden, and I know someone had mentioned Jay Gruden before, but is there someone who most of us haven't thought of?

I'm still skeptical about moving on from Mike Shanahan. I still believe a better defense has this team a lock for the playoffs on a consistent basis.

Is it the Jim Harbaugh connection? I would definitely want a coach who would continue to handle RGIII's development the right way.

I've read that he is - if nothing else - on their radar. He'd be a coach I'd want if we were to release Shanny. For the next coach, I'd like to not have a retread; I'd rather have a young up and comer.

Are they grooming AJ Smith to take over for Allen, assuming bruce is given another job in the front office?

And the team that crumbled on his watch too.

Keep him away from contract negotiations. We need Bruce Allen around in some regard.
