I wanted an experienced DC who also had NFL HC experience (Phillips, Schwartz, or Mangini, for example) so Jay Gruden could have a mentor on staff, as well. I think that Jay made a lot of rookie HC mistakes last season and he could still use some sage advice from time-to-time.
I admit not knowing much about the guy until his name first popped up. Detroit was a disaster, not sure how much blame you can attach to anyone there at that time not named Millen.
Yup. It's not like they had a DL anchored by Suh and his buddies. From Pro Football Reference here are the guys from Detroit's 0-16 squad: Paris Lenon, Age: 31, Pos: MLB, Games: 16, Sacks: 1.5, Int.: 0, Tackles/Assists: 81/40. Ernie Sims, Age: 24, Pos: RLB, Games: 16, Sacks: 1.0, Int.: 0, Tackles/Assists: 71/42. Daniel Bullocks, Age: 25, Pos: SS, Games: 16, Sacks: 0, Int.: 0, Tackles/Assists: 60/30. Kalvin Pearson, Age: 30, Pos: FS, Games: 16, Sacks: 1, Int.: 0, Tackles/Assists: 65/18. Leigh Bodden, Age: 27, Pos: RCB, Games: 16, Sacks: 0, Int.: 0, Tackles/Assists: 61/12. Ryan Nece, Age: 27, Pos: LLB, Games: 16, Sacks: 1.5, Int.: 1, Tackles/Assists: 45/23. So three of your top six tacklers are DB's. Not a ringing endorsement of the talent level. The rest of the leaders on defense: Dwight Smith: 33, SS Dewayne White: 29, RDE, T/A: 28/10 Alex Lewis: 27, LB, 32/9 Cory Redding: 28, RDT, 31/7 Travis Fisher: 29, RCB, 30/7 Shaun Cody: 25, RDT, 25/11 Corey Smith: 29, DE, 25/5 Chartric Darby: 33, NT, 23/9 Jared DeVries: 32, LDE, 21/8 Brian Kelly: 32, LCB, 23/392 Cliff Avril: 22, DE, 17/5 Other than Avril (in his rookie year) and Sims, I hadn't heard of any of these guys. Seven years from now, others will probably say the same for most of our 2013-14 defense. |

I have a feeling that they are feeling the hire out. Just like they worked Fassel. Feeding the reaction of the fanbase. Since the hire isn't official yet.
Well, wasn't Snyder a power-hungry asshole, despite the fanbase being told otherwise, from 1999 till 2004? And even then...
Joe Gibbs was a master at this. You could see it during his four seasons, how he massaged Snyder and Vinny Cerrato’s egos during news conferences, etc. Made them feel like they were giving invaluable input all the time. Gibbs also knew when to let Snyder “win;” in other words, he knew when to pick his battles. Gibbs also knew Snyder idolized him. Who didn't? As one person from that staff once said, “That way, when it came time to pick his fights with Dan, he’d get what he wanted. He managed Dan well.” 2008-2009, Snyder gave control to his good friend below, right? Thanks Snyder! I dunno what to believe about Snyder vs. Shanahan. But Shanahan didn't have that kind of trouble in Denver, right? Was the situation in Oakland Shanny's fault or Al Davis (who had trouble with other coaches)? OTOH, we have had continuous drama with the Snyder Skins except Gibbs 2.0. It seems like a mixed bag to me, but isn't it logical to assume Snyder is still a power hungry asshole until proven otherwise?
That bit about Gibbs is important. People are creating a false either/or between giving Snyder total power or no power. As Gibbs shows us, the important thing is actually to find a workable middle ground. Gibbs found the middle ground. Other good teams find the middle ground. As we have seen with bad trades, controversies about starting QB's, and many other things, Bruce Allen does not find the middle ground. |

I liked the fact that it took Phillips one season to turn that Texans defense around...and in the first year of their conversion to a 3-4. But oh well. |

But Phillips did not work in Tampa, and we like to hire coaches with connections to Tampa, despite the fact that Tampa under Allen did not consistently win. But, hey, let's keep getting the Tampa band back together, regardless of whether they were sucky or not. |

You should really take a look at that thread about Phillips interviewing. Doesn't matter what the HC/GM does, if the boss, the owner, isn't willing to work at it. It shouldn't take being a living legend to get Snyder to budge a little. Snyder's been the meddler, from Turner (QB), to Schottenheimer (had to take control back), Spurrier (may have just been a trainwreck), to even Gibbs (above), Zorn ("All I told him was to take his hands out of his pockets"), to Shanny (claims Snyder meddled). I thought one of the positive things of Allen, was that he was described as a good buffer between Snyder and the team. Is that not true now? |

Based on my 40+ years of fandom and my complete powerlessness to affect any change, I am reluctantly with the wait and see crowd at this point. My burgundy colored glasses, however, have become pretty faded over the last few years. Call me jaded, but the dysfunction and past mismanagement of this team has just beaten me down. As in the past, I truly hope that assumptions of the apocalypse are sorely misplaced. Given the many red flags (BA Tampa connection, Barry's poor performance in Detroit - even if many years ago - and his lack of DC experience since, and the many experienced DC's with solid resumes available), however, it is hard for me to be excited about the hire. It seems to me that, when I have hoped folks were wrong to assume the worst, the prophetic vision of the Cassandras was recognized only after things had gone to hell. At this point in my fandom, why should I expect folks are wrong to assume the worst this time from this team with this hire? Anyone? ... Anyone? |
Re: New Defensive Coordinator 2015
Why don't people give Barry a chance instead of panicking? Belicheck and many others bombed on the first gig as coach or coordinator.

Some people said that Phillips would have been the "good ol' boy" hire (which the whole concept is ridiculous) and that he wasn't a tough DC. Everything that I'm reading about Barry in San Diego (where he's been for the past three/four years) looks good. I'm willing to give him a chance. |
Re: New Defensive Coordinator 2015
So we should focus on what coaches did 8 years ago and not what they've done recently? Okay.
You're right! I mean, just because he had a great interview and worked in Tampa with BA many years ago, the Skins wouldn't hire a journeyman assistant coach who was an abysmal failure in his one attempt at leading a defense without some consistent stellar work in recent years on his resume to counterbalance it. Let's look at Barry's resume as a DC at the pro level in the last five years and compare it some of the other candidates who were mentioned ... Damn, I can't seem to find it. I know it's around here somewhere. ... Are you hiding it from us Ruhskins? You clever boy! |

Not panicking -- just not particularly optimistic. As always, I will hope that the naysayers are once again wrong. |
Re: New Defensive Coordinator 2015
This wasn't the best hire but I'm willing to see what happens. Maraneli sure coached up the Dallas defense this year. He was the head coach that year Detroit went 0-16. Did that mean he can't coach. Nope. I'm more concerned about getting better players. It doesn't matter who's coaching, we need better talent. I think the next question is are we going back to the 4-3?

Re: New Defensive Coordinator 2015
Hmmm... I think I'm ok with this choice.
I think this guy can start a whole new deal here in Washington. Other than the Lions thing he has a resume that should have given him a lot of experience and outlook. I'll certainly take this over Haslett. |
Re: New Defensive Coordinator 2015
There is nothing confirming this on ESPN or other major networks. Might not be the case.
As for dry snitching, a good way to catch an informant is to put information out you know to be false to a specific person and see where it goes..... Not saying management is that smart, would be nice though. I fully expect Barry is correct. |

Why rush? #RedskinsTalk I could be completely wrong, but I have a feeling that the Redskins are awaiting the whole Fangio situation to play out in SF. I believe he is free to resign if he's passed over for the HC position (or something like that). |

Anyway, I don't like the hire(if this is for real), but we needed a change from Haslett. Maybe this guy is the right one. I doubt it. |
