Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
Stats mean a lot. And the more stats you have on a player, the more they mean. They help in making a more objective appraisal of a players performance. They also provide a broader perspective on a player when his stats are compared to those of his peers.

Here are some of Cousin's stats and rankings so far this season:

Total Yards: 1,172 (6th)
Completion Pct: 66.2 (13th)
Yards per Game: 293.0 (6th)
Touchdowns: 6 (11th)
Interceptions Thrown: 4 (12th)
QB Rating: 91.8 (13th)

So, let's just say that Kirk is the 13th rated QB based on the above numbers. I just can't come up with a another solution that is likely to produce a better QB than keeping Kirk Cousins would. He could be a Top 10 QB by season's end and that is very hard to find. Nevertheless, I agree with you that there is no reason to lock him up now.
So for the sake of argument, what if all 4 of his interceptions came in the red zone,50 % of his passing yardage came in garbage time along with 4 of his tds, would you still say your stats matter? Thats why stats dont matter,or to rephrase they dont always tell the right story.

Did you just completely make up stats to prove that stats dont matter?

I understand stats aren't everything and all that jazz, but if you look at the stat leaders in any category during any year the leaders are all going to usually be your studs. So to say they dont matter is not true. They dont always tell the whole story, but they tell most of it...

You got another plan other than locking up Kirk Cousins?

Please don't tell me it's about the money because Kirk has the 13th highest 2016 salary among NFL QB's, which seems to me to be about right for this season. As for the total amount of guaranteed salary, Kirk is ranked 24th, behind such luminaries as Ryan Tannehill and Brock Osweiler. In this league, even mediocre starting QB's cost a ridiculous amount in salary and cap space.

KC is gonna get paid period. Even if we decide to go another route or he simply bombs...teams will lineup to pay him just based on last year. That QB play from last night....there is a serious need of QB talent.

Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread

Statistics aren't irrelevant, but you have to interpret them correctly. The fact that Cousins is 11th in passing yards and 13th in rating and whatever whatever, that's a function of both the quality of his play AND the quality of the offense around him, AND the situations the team has found itself in. So QBs can play to their ability, but they don't all face the same situations, they don't all have the same lines and same weapons, and they haven't all faced the same defenses.

So you can't just go off numbers and draw a conclusion based solely on that.

The question you have to answer is: if we had a different QB playing behind this line, with these weapons, and in the situations we've faced, how would that QB have done? Not easy to answer. But I think half the QBs in the NFL would have put up as good or better numbers than Cousins, and half would have been worse.

Our line is absolutely awesome at protecting, and between Reed Jackson Crowder and Garcon, some of the best weapons in the game. Last year Cousins was 6th in QBR, but I do not think he is the 6th best QB in the league. I think there's probably 10-15 guys who could have matched his numbers.

BUT THAT'S NOT THE POINT! The point is football is a dependent game, and QBs aren't the only thing that matters. If Cousins can put up the 6th best QBR in the league partly because he's solid but also because he's benefitting from a good line and great weapons, then you've got a winning offensive formula. You don't F with it. You try to pay him fairly - not as the 6th best QB in the league, but as a good starter you can win with.

Cousins and the offense are not what's preventing us from being a very good team (well, he wasn't helping in the first two games this year). But now he looks much better. Our problem is defense. If McCloughan keeps Cousins and this offense together, and manages to put together a defense, THEN we've got something.

You don't need a top 5 QB in order to put up a top 5 offensive performance. Keep that in mind.

Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread

Lets not completely burn down Cousins chances of turning into a top ten QB though. I think one very important aspect of stats is looking at them over the long haul, and not in a little window - where all of those situational factors are going to really effect the outcome.
Yes KC has weapons, and the oline has been great with pass pro. However our D certainly has not helped the offense by keeping them in rhythm and on the field. Our run game (minus last week) has been completely irrelevant for most of the time KC has been our starter. Teams dont even worry about it. So KC has done what he has done against defenses keying on the pass almost entirely.

Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread

What I want to see from Cousins is better awareness when the pocket breaks down. When he has time (and thank god we pass block well) he can pick you apart. When the pocket DOES break down, he has major trouble. I feel like he's pretty good with hot reads against a blitz, but the second I see him pull the ball down and start running, I get antsy in my pantsies.

Joe Gibbs proved that numerous times. Under Gibbs, the Skins had top-rated offenses in 83,87,89,91, and 99. The QB's were Joe Theismann, Jay Schroeder, Doug Williams, Mark Rypien, and Brad Johnson. Three of those teams went to the Super Bowl and two of them became NFL Champions.

Unfortunately Gibbs isnt here. Neither is arguably the greatest o-line ever, a hof running back, a hof wr , or a stud defense. All things that help u win without a top five qb. Which brings me back to KC is doing what he is doing with ... well.... a mediocre coach, less than mediocre defense, and less than mediocre run game. All a credit to him. That is why he will not go anywhere. The Skins know this. They will continue to build around him.

At what rate? 2 bad games then 2 good games? At that rate I hope he's getting paid somewhere else,we can pick up Brian Hoyer or Jay Cutler for a whole lot less for a inconsistent mediocre qb.
Now if he can go on a run like last year then it's a different ballgame, but drawing conclusions after 4 games is .......

Yea really.

The bigger point is we can win with him now and he is only going to get better. Those guy aren't winners.

If Kirk had a defense and the offense was balanced to support him we would be a perennial playoff contender vying for the conference, much less the division.

Having to score more than 30 a game to win is tough.

Simply put, some of us have more faith in Kirk than you do. That's all there is to it, actually. Regardless of fans like me who believe in Kirk, you're going to get what you want because the Redskins brass are going to evaluate him based on his play this entire season (and other factors) before attempting to sign him to a long-term contract. That's what the Franchise tag was all about.

The decision that the Redskins make about Kirk will only be about whether or not they should go forward with Kirk as their starting QB. By that I mean, the only question is "Once the team has been built around KC, can the Redskins win a Super Bowl with him as their starting QB?". It's not about the money because SM has made it clear that the Skins will be willing to pay fair market value to get the QB they want. Also, Kirk doesn't need to be a future All-Pro or Top 10 QB for the answer to the Big Question to be "Yes".

At his point, what you seem to be attempting to do is to convince people like me who have more faith in Kirk than you do to have less faith in him until we see his full season body of work. You should try to understand that it's not as if those of us who already believe in Kirk don't realize that he might fail - we do. Still, in my case, I don't choose to temper my enthusiasm about Kirk's future. It's more fun for me that way.

Excellent post.
Your right,I dont have as much faith in Kirk as some, but I want Kirk to succeed as much as anybody. But my recent postings was just about people saying pay Kirk and bringing up stats after 4 games, way too premature for that.
And even in his run last year he still had some clunkers,I mean how does he lose to Dallas on MNF to a backup thats not even in the league anymore? And that goes for this yr too? Dak not only showed more poise in that game but in the 4 games I've seen Dak play he's showed me more poise then Cousins has in 5 years.
2 examples, the Philly game last yr when he kneeled down before the half to ruin our chances for a score, then this year when Jay opted to try and score with 5 or 6 seconds left{fucking terrible coaching} and Kirk held onto the ball and took a sack instead of throwing it away. That gentlemen does not show grace under pressure.
In my book Kirk still has a lot to prove and hopefully he will because it's going to be on his shoulders with this defense and our shitty coaches he has a lot to overcome.
But if Kirk continues at his inconsistent play why pay him? Look what Dak and Wentz have done this year,we can always draft another QB :laughing-

Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread

I'm a big Kirk Cousins fan, I have been his fan since he arrived here in Washington, and while my earlier posts this season suggested that he still has an interception problem, and at some point may or may not be benched for McCoy, I still think Cousins is an average QB, and I feel that in this league, that is enough to win football games.

I have compared him this year to other QB's like Eli Manning, who are interception prone at times, and to be fair, Eli is a Super Bowl QB who has thrown in his career 298 TDs to 203 INTS, which seems very "Cousins Like" if Cousins has as long as a career as Eli.

The problem I think, that others have pointed out, is that the Defense is so bad that Cousins and company will have to produce upwards of 30 points a game for us to have a shot at winning. We will likely finish the season at 8-8, possibly worse than that, and for that reason alone, Cousins is going to be shipped off to somewhere else where he most likely will have a supporting cast around him and he will look like a star. I have said since they failed to reach a deal, that the Skins have soured on Cousins because he refused their initial offer, gave him the franchise tag because they knew they had no other option at QB this year, and they know that this coming offseason, he will be someone else's problem.

Long way to go this season but he's been sort of disappointing. Maybe I was expecting more from him. He's just had some absolute stupid ass plays this year that he shouldn't be making....the backbreaking int against Dallas, the bonehead play to end the half, stupid sacks, he can clean that shit up. Thats just who Kirk is as a football player. He is going to dazzle you for half of the game and then play horrible for the other half. I feel like up and down is what you are going to get from him no matter what.

But we could still win alot of games with him if the defense wasn't so bad and he didn't have to be asked to do as much as he's doing now because we are always behind and we have no running game...

The deal with Cousins is He has A lot of time to throw and maybe the best WR/TEcombo in the league. the down is no running game, iffy play calling and his knack for making the bad throw/interception . I can understand if he were being harassed from the pocket but it seems he plays better when he is hurried..go figure. And then you see ROOKIE QB's having a lot of success on other teams and it makes you wonder about Cousins..Hopefully by the end of this season we will know what we have in Cousins.

I cannot believe your reasoning, you cannot possibly be being objective about Kirk.If he was playing for another team I do not believe you guys would think Kirk was that great.

Can you imagine Brian Hoyer making 17 million a yr and being considered a franchise qb? I can't either but yet we are thinking that about Kirk.

Brian Hoyer played against arguably thee worst pass d in football in perfect weather.
Cousins played a top 5-10 pass d in atrocious weather.
In both their short careers at starter the numbers are heavily in favor of KC.

If there wasnt a fumble after that pick we lose that game.
One interception from a QB in one game isnt that bad, but in a low scoring affair like we had it could be a killer.

But I can see from your post we are not going to agree on this subject,l just hope Kirk's luck will continue in the future when he throws more backbreaking ints:laughing-

I can honestly say this is a fair post. I think what I could say about yesterday is it could have been a backbreaker. He got bailed out by the fumble into the end zone. But there was still a long way to go in that game so he could have overcome it. But that pick, and some of his other ones have just totally shifted the momentum back to the other team, when it seemed like we were getting control of the game. Hoping he can stop making those mistakes.

I don't really get hung up on the tag and the money. It was perfect timing for Cousins. Just because he's making 20 million doesn't mean he's going to all of a sudden put the team on his back. He's just not that type of player. Not sure why it's so hard for some of you to realize that, or when he misses a pass it's.."well he's making 20 million, so he should be better!" That's just ridiculous.

So far is there a big difference between Hoyer and Cousins? I'd say probably not. If you put Hoyer in this offense he'd probably have similar numbers to Cousins. And I have always been pro Cousins, but that is a fair comparison.

One interception from a QB in one game isnt that bad, but in a low scoring affair like we had it could be a killer.
Again though, there was a lot of time left in the game. We very well could have won that game. Especially the way the defense was playing.

Oh man. Hoyer has never sniffed a year like KC had in 2015. If you put Hoyer on this team he would still not.

I think a lot of us have developed certain expectations from Kirk given his performance and output during the second half of the season last year. Hence the reaction and criticism.

That being said, I will admit that this goes beyond Kirk. The coaching staff needs to figure out how to deal with these 3rd and short situations.

Having the defense perform better, should take some of the pressure form Kirk and the passing game. Now we need to get the running game and these short-yardage situations handled.

Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread

The question is do you want to pay Cousins at least 18 million per year for 5 years after this season or find a way cheaper veteran or draft pick, and use all that saved money to get other players? I think that is still up in the air after 5 games. Ideally you take the QB and pay the money but it has to be for the right guy.
