I think Wade just liked LA better, and honestly it's probably a better fit. I really wanted him here, so it's mostly just me accepting that he's not ever going to come here. Sad! (lol)
Is anyone really that surprised we haven't landed one of the top available D coordinators yet? I mean it's not an awesome situation they would be coming in to.
The offense was about the only bright spot last year, and now with McVay leaving (and maybe other assistants with him), possibly losing the two best receivers, and the fact that the front office can't figure out who Kirk Cousins is...it likely won't be the same. The lack of talent on the defense can't be appealing, unless you just love a challenge. Top it all off with a head coach on the back end of his contract, and an owner that hasn't extended a head coach in 18 years...why would you want this job? Everybody thinks we just interview and sign whoever the top guy is, but it's a two way street. These guys are coming in and interviewing the organization too, to see if it's a good fit for them. (Wade could see from Denver that it wasn't). So, don't be surprised if we end up with Manusky by default...
Yeah, my big post on the "Joe Barry" thread pretty much stated just this. It's not up to the Redskins, it's up to the candidates. And I bet each one is giving pause to the situation, because it really isn't an ideal situation. We see how quickly some of the other guys have made the decision on other teams, so I think that speaks volumes. I will say that if a deal with Pettine or Bradley isn't done by today, then neither of those guys come to Washington. |

I mean, KC, Seattle, and Houston certainly have talented position coaches that might be worth looking at.
Honestly, I think Jay Gruden is not in a situation where he chooses a position guy to move up and try out at DC. He needs a proven successful DC. He just lost Sean McVay, which I think we'll wind up seeing meant a lot more to us than what we think he did, and so there's pressure to keep the offense at a high level on top of rebuilding the defense. Gruden has a lot on his plate, and I think he needs the best DC available hired today. |

Not saying he would leave KC, or even want to be a DC again, but what about Emmit Thomas? |
Re: The coordinators
this is turning into a total disaster,:(gruden should not call the plays to much is on the head coach, i don,t think we are getting bradley either as D.C think he is going to the chargers with lynn, ugh we are down to pettine and that,s it i think and keep in mind we still need a D.L coach and secondary coach as well, i would like to hire a good O.C.but i don,t think anyone good is available and god help us if we lose callahan

Re: The coordinators
I heard this Joe Barry guy is available now, might have to give him a call.
For OC, no Mike McCoy, any other words on who leading candidates are? |

Really bummed that Bradley seems like he isn't an option anymore. Seems like Pettine may be the leader now?

you are right he is probably the leader now by default (pettine) so what does that say? uuuuugh:Flush:

I'm only seeing that the Chargers are targeting him. There were reports on January 1 that Bradley would go with Lynn wherever he went, but that's been quiet since. I wouldn't assume Bradley is off the board. He still has ties to everyone at the Skins. That said our situation would not be considered ideal for any DC. Our talent is iffy, and Gruden is going into his make or break year which makes it entirely possible the entire staff is cleaned out following the 2017 season. But for me Pettine is just as good a choice as Bradley. Wade was the candidate that had me most excited, now that he's gone I don't see the reason to rush. |

Also the Chargers are not the most stable organization at the moment, with their move to LA. Their defense isn't that great is well, all they have is an elite CB I believe. I am fine with Pettine or Bradley. I think they can come in and shape our defense into a decent unit. Personally, I want the defense to improve just like any one, however, I'm more concerned about the possible changes to the offensive coaching staff structure, given that this is our best unit. |
Re: The coordinators
Im lost on why people are upset McCoy wont be coming here....
Because he's got track record. Sure the Chargers offense wasn't that great under McCoy, but when he was coordinator with the Broncos, excluding that magnificent year he had with Peyton, he was able to make it work with Tim f'n Tebow and Kyle Orton of all people. |
Re: The coordinators
hate to mention this name how about sexy rex ryan not one of my fisrt choices but he is a good 3-4 D CORDINATOR either him or pettijne i guess please don,t tell me manusky because we would of hired him already instead of going through interview process
|
Re: The coordinators
It's more important to me that the offense maintain continuity of scheme, I'm not interested in an offensive coordinator coming in who doesn't have familiarity with Gruden's scheme.
On the defensive side I'm absolutely looking for a brand new perspective but I'd rather see Gruden promote from within for OC and replace that vacancy opened after the promotion. |

I'll feel better when a report comes out that says they WILL keep all of their offensive assistant coaches. 'Expected to' and 'will' are obviously not the same...Still wouldn't be surprised to see McVay try to get either Cavanaugh or Callahan to be his OC. They would provide him with a little familiarity, and some experience at the same time. |

There had been rumors of tight ends coach Wes Phillips joining McVay's staff, but the source said Phillips and the other coaches were expected to stay. They would need permission to interview for another job. Phillips' dad, Wade, is the Rams' new defensive coordinator. The Redskins need to fill McVay's offensive coordinator job and could do that from within. That could be with head coach Jay Gruden again calling plays or elevating line coach Bill Callahan or quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh both ex-coordinators. John Keim, ESPN Staff Writer |
Re: The coordinators
Welp. At the end of the day and no defensive coordinator hired nor any talk of interviewing anybody else. I don't like this. It's got Greg Manusky's name written all over it. :D

Re: The coordinators
Are there any new names coming up from the playoff teams? Maybe they're waiting for those..? Poaching talent from playoff teams could make more sense than promoting scrubs from non-contenders, if good names are available..
Our defensive talent sucks, but we have a bunch of draft picks and money this year, and even a modest improvement could mean playoffs. We're not a bad destination for a good defensive coach.. |
Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports is reporting that the team is "very likely" to move quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh up to offensive coordinator. Jay Gruden would take back the play calling duties. Those have belonged to Sean McVay the last two seasons. McVay departed to take the head coaching job with the Rams earlier this week. La Canfora also is reporting that tight ends coach Wes Phillips will join McVay in Los Angeles. The two were close on the Redskins staff and Wade Phillips, Wes father, is going to be the defensive coordinator with the Rams.
|

Re: The coordinators
At least the offense will be set. What is the holdup with the

Assuming KC is given a long term coach, I think we probably would go without. He was brought in when we had RG3, KC and Colt and needed a calming instructive voice in that room alone. If we lock up KC, then a lot of the hand holding should go away. |
Re: The coordinators
Saw a blurb that they are interviewing Rob Ryan. Honestly, if they hire him, that will really erode any faith I have with our "brain trust". The only coordinator I'd want less than Barry.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Albert Breer Verified account @AlbertBreer Per sources, the Redskins will be interviewing ex-Bill ass't Rob Ryan for their defensive coordinator opening. Why even bring him in for an interview? I'm starting to wonder if coordinators are possibly running from this job due to the personnel. A bum coach like Rob Ryan will be ready to pounce on this job. I'll be ticked, if we hire Rob Ryan. Jay Gruden will also find himself fired after the 2017 season. |

This would be a disaster, this will really make me not want to watch next year, I can't believe we are even interviewing this guy, smh

Re: The coordinators
Junior Galette loved playing under Ryan in New Orleans. And we all know the relationship between Galette and McCloughan. This might be due diligence following up on a player's suggestion.
We had interest in Wilks, too. The Norman connection. I don't think there's any way they'd go with Rob Ryan. When you sit back and review resumes it makes no sense. Greg Manusky's record as the Colts and 49ers coordinator was better. Don't overreact to an interview. |
Re: The coordinators
I wonder, who is the genius at Redskins Park who actually wants to interview Rob Ryan for the DC position? It's like the circus has come to town. Rob Ryan is literally the last coach I would want as our DC. I can hardly freakin' believe it.
|
Re: The coordinators
Given philosophies, I wouldn't be shocked if they're starting to hone in on Pettine, and this Ryan interview may be coming under the auspices of DC interview, but really be more about kicking the tires on Ryan as a position coach under Pettine.
They're all from the same Rex Ryan tree. |
