What is your alternative solution at QB for next year? If you don’t have a QB, your chances of any possibility of success are next to zero.
We didn't succeed with Cousins last season. We won't with Smith next season.

Fire Bruce Allen. Get Snyder out of the football side of operations altogether.

Get someone like Nick Caserio, Mark Dominik, Eric DeCosta, Rick Mueller, Dave Gettleman, or Chris Ballard. ANY of these guys would be a massive upgrade. Let them do what THEY want at QB.

If it were my choice, I would like them to draft a QB and build from there. Like the Eagles and Rams have. We are NOT contenders now.

Oh it just gets better, from Shefter:

Kansas City is expected to receive a second-round pick from Washington for Alex Smith and possibly more, per source. But a second-round pick was the price as of this morning, before trade between KC and Washington finalized.

I find it funny you can guarantee Smith won’t be successful because Cousins wasn’t. Especially before FA and the draft even begin.

It's a no brainer to me and I've been stoked since waking up this morning. U get a better QB for $30M less in guarantees most likely and 5M a yr less. The only downside is AS is 33.

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith

Matty the quote system is broken again, it won't let me quote yours or SCRedskins post.

I didn't like the prove it tag, because we have a cap guru in Eric Schaffer who no doubt could have come up with a long term deal that gave us an out a 2-4 years down the road if he didn't pan out. But we didn't even try for the better part of 2 offseasons, it was like they were never serious about it. The lack of faith in him showed, and most likely is what burned us in the end. I mean shit, we benched McNabb a week after his long term extension, you can't tell me there's no way Kirk wasn't worth the money. The cap goes up every year, which makes the contract more manageable. Plus you can do creative accounting if you need to make room.

Matty, I know I'm complaining over spilled milk right now, but this deal allows our current power structure to remain in place despite the fact they are the only franchise in modern day history to screw up having a good qb.

Youse guys complaining that KC can't get us to the playoffs are conveniently ignoring it takes a 53 man roster to get us there. The stats were good. The attitude was good. He showed up every day, put in the work, came in as a backup rookie and made it to the Pro Bowl 5 years later. Instead of rewarding him for it, they dissed him. And it not only cost us financially, it has now cost us our best up-and-coming young defender. How much money did we save after paying KC 44 mil for 2 years and Alex Smith 71+ for however many years he lasts? The difference is negligible. I did a quick Google search and I can't find the rankings at work rn, but I have seen somewhere that said KC ranks 6th in the NFL in completions over 20 yards and in the same span Smith ranks 22nd. That's ignoring all of the other stats, the combined passing td's over the last 3 years, etc.

So to me, this deal screams we just paid Kirk big money for 2 years, only to get rid of him and Kendall Fuller for an older, not-as-good but same neighborhood qb who we still have to pay regardless. Time will tell the tale, but it reeks of incompetency for me. What more do we have to see to know that Bruce Allen does not deserve to run this front office? Do we have to wait until we slide from mediocre to downright uncompetitive?

I have no idea what would be a better solution at this point in time. I just know it doesn't involve giving away Kendall Fuller. You build your team around these young, cheap, built-through-the-draft building blocks. And we just gave away two of our brightest success stories of building through the draft of the last few years.

I thought we were on the right track when McC came on board and decided building through the draft was the smart philosophy. But part 2 of building through the draft means paying the homegrown talent who worked hard to prove themselves worthy. We seemed to have missed that message.

We didn't miss the message. Snyder and Smithers never received the message. Snyder hired McC then ignored his advice regarding a LTD for Cousins. Meanwhile Smithers was busy undermining McC to gain more power while McC was busy undermining himself with his absurd, self-styled rehab program of sticking to beer. Voila!

Snyder just can't keep from interfering with the QB position and he appears to be firmly committed to the sycophantic school of management. Bad ownership is what keeps this carnival ride spinning.

I agree Smith is the best option we had so in that sense I am good with this.

As an aside am I the only one who thinks the team actually put alot of weapons around Cousins? That Gruden bet his job on Cousins playing well? So the initial offer sent to him was low....get over yourself and negotiate to what is reasonable for both sides. I give two shits Cousins got but hurt because the owner liked bobby3 better. At some point he needs to let shit roll off his back or he is not going to win anything. So part of me is happy this fucker is gone.

I mean really, I couldn't imagine this happening to me at my normal job and not working something out to where I was happy.

Agree with everything you stated. Completely do not trust the Redskins front office to get anything right. This was a cover your backside deal, since the Redskins are probably the only franchise in NFL history to torpedo their own 'franchise QB' after stumbling onto one by blind luck, due to Shanahan's draft. It would not surprise me at all if this was some weird, can't let Shanahan have credit stunt, since 'little Danny' was all in on RGIII and couldn't deal with his precious RGIII being a bust.

Kirk is the only memorable Redskin's QB of the last 20 years. This is almost as bad as when they let Trent Green leave.

Sick of the lousy ownership and front office. I'll cherish my Redskins memories, from long ago, but those were from childhood. Realizing that after twenty years of garbage due to Snyder, it might be time to move on.
what are all the weapons?

they have a great slot wr (hill), a great te and a great rb (pass catching and running) . . . we have a damn good slot wr ourselves (crowder), a great te when healthy (caveat on when healthy) and thompson as our pass catching rb . . . just need a rb for running purposes, but we are not far off offensive talent wise from kansas city . . . and i still think docston will be a damn good wr too . . . KC was afraid to throw to him even when he was WIDE open
The best friend of any QB is a strong running game and a great pass catching clutch TE. Chiefs are set up talent wise to succeed. Their QB does not have to carry them.

Nobody’s seemingly willing to accept the reality.

Kirk. Cousins. Did. Not. Want. To. Be. A. Redskin.

He wants to play with a winning tradition. We haven’t had that since the early 90s. He was gone from Washington the moment the clock hit 0:00 against the Giants.

Gotta deal with it and move on, gentlemen.

Last thing I’m going to say Smith couldn’t do it in SF or KC (I like Alex and saw plenty of him in SF) Cousins is the better QB, I understand we needed a replacement, management got fleeced and way overpaid for him, especially at
Young age of 33. We better draft a young QB to groom, we are going to need it. I’m out.

Smith made the pro bowl, Cousins didn’t. Smith had 5 INTs and 4 fumbles, Cousins had 13 INTs and 13 fumbles. Smith is a big running threat, Cousins is a little one. Smith’s red zone performance is better. Reid and Gruden’s systems are nearly identical.

But yeah sure Cousins is better.

Denial is a pretty powerful thing apparently.

While I was holding out hope something would work out with Cousins I knew that chances of that actually happening was very slim.

What surprises me is that people seem surprised the Cousins/Redskins relationship has come to an end. The writing has been on the wall especially after the 2nd tag.

When it comes to crunch time, statistics would say that is a lie. Exhibit A, comparative data from the last three seasons. Smith is better in EVERY category except one. Not by a ton, but better nonetheless.

Yet KC had more 4 quarter come backs over the last three years (7 to 5). looking exclusively at the 4th quarter is ignoring the other three quarters. They are pretty comparable over the last 5 years except Alex Smith has a better interception% and is a better runner. I wonder if Gruden is going to try to make AS fit his system or cater to his strength. Listened to an interesting interview with Andy Benoit (from MMQB) on Grant and Danny and he voiced that as a potential problem.

There's not as much of an opportunity to be in situations where a comeback is needed to win when you play with a dominant defense. This stat is meaningless.

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith

So I have had 24 hours to let this marinate and I have gone through a range of emotions, first I was shocked, not that we got a new QB, because I think deep down we all knew Cousins didn't want to be here and wasn't coming back, I was more shocked because I didn't think Alex Smith was on our radar.

Then, I went to fear when I heard the initial reports were players and picks. I was relieved that it was just a 3rd round pick because as angry as people want to be, Smith's production is worth a 3rd round pick, there is no disputing that. Even at 33 years old.

I got angry when I found out it was Kendall Fuller who was involved because he was far and away our best defensive player to me from what I saw but at the end of the day he isn't Jalen Ramsey, or Xavier Rhodes, or even Josh Norman yet. (Could he get there? possibly but QB>>>>CB any day of the week.)

So once I woke up I started looking at it more and more, Alex Smith has gotten better and better every year, doesn't turn the ball over and one thing no one is mentioning, he beat both teams who are in the Super Bowl this year.

Before I can fully judge this, I want to see the team that is built around Smith, we do need a RB, need more from Doctson, and Reed does need to stay healthy but until I see the season unfold can't really say anything definitive. All I know is that at WORST case scenario Cousins vs. Smith is a wash, but difference is we will be able to get more pieces with Smith vs. Cousins at 30 million or whatever the hell he gets and doesn't want to be here.

Just remember before all of you jump off a cliff, Cousins DID NOT want to be here anymore. You can say we fucked it up, you can say we should have accepted his offer 3 years ago, the point is it is over and we can't go back.

Ask Tom Brady if 4th quarter comebacks are a meaningless stat. He does it all the time and is one of the greatest ever, with multiple championships to prove it. I don't understand how the stat is meaningless. If you can't perform in crunch time, then you aren't going to go far.

And I specifically chose those three stats because I feel like they are the most critical. Cousins is better with overall yardage and TDs, but to me they are less important than what you do in the red zone, the 4th quarter, and when you are playing from behind.

My point all long through this thread has been we were smart not to offer Cousins a big money long term deal because even though he can put up good stats, he has never had the capability to win when it matters (red zone and 4th quarter), and that fact by itself led me to believe he wouldn't ever take us deep in the playoffs.

Just remember before all of you jump off a cliff, Cousins DID NOT want to be here anymore. You can say we fucked it up, you can say we should have accepted his offer 3 years ago, the point is it is over and we can't go back.
Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith

Cousins couldn't beat the Cowboys or Giants. Paying 28 million or whatever, to a qb who can't beat teams in your division is a very risky gamble and we avoided it.

Alex, beat the damn Cowboys.

Way more excited about free agency and draft now.

Redskins trade for Alex Smith

Losing Fuller hurts. Was it really necessary? It isn’t exactly an area of need for the Chiefs. Could they have offered someone else and still done the deal? We will never know. But there are only a handful of guys on either side of the ball I would have said “do not trade” and Fuller was one of them. (I would also have said Silverback, Moses, and Scherff on offense, and Kerrigan, Norman, Smith, Ioniddis, and Allen on defense) young talent (except arguably Kerrigan) that could help us win for a long time. Sigh.

I like Alex Smith a lot - a good, hardworking dude (I think he lives near me too). I hope he continues the upward trend.

By the way, the Redskins got fleeced big time. The 49ers gave up a 2nd rounder for Jimmy G. Redskin gave Fuller and 3rd rounder. Jimmy G. Will be a much better QB than Smith, book that.
