Re: Ron Rivera Thread
McCarthy's the perfect coach in a small market like Green Bay. But the Cowboys are a different animal. He's in way over his head. I give it two years.

Re: Ron Rivera Thread
GB also has a strong front office that calls all the shots, so he’s used to that dynamic.
I’m not a big McCarthy fan but he should be an improvement over the clapper. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Re: Ron Rivera Thread
Anybody worried about Haskins growth stunted because of KOC leaving shouldn’t be concerned. Haskins was so limited in a system that basics were embedded, not an extensive offense.

I agree, however there is no guarantee that RR sees/wants Haskins as his week 1 starter. He could totally pull a Gibbs 2.0 and bring in a veteran that he and Turner are more comfortable with. Then there's the faint possibility I guess of Alex Smith? I just hope they do not trade for Cam Newton. |

Def no Cam and no Alex. I think Dan and Ron in getting together to come to skins both have some sorta vision like Haskins will be given the chance to be QB of future. Scott Turner...if they employ his dad's Air Coryell system in the pass game, Haskins a big QB with a big Arm really fits the mold. You got to push the ball down the field in the 9-8 routes... Haskins kinda reminds me of a Cam, Rivers type thrower. I think the system fits. |
Re: Ron Rivera Thread
Yesterday Haskins tweeted "Lets get to work #HTTR"
Turner followed today with "Its good to be home. Time to get to work #HTTR" Thats called mirroring and it is a small thing but using the same language is a simple way of building bridges and relationships. Sent from my SM-G973U using Tapatalk |

Didn't know where to put this, but a quick vent about ESPN's Jason Reid.
John Keim recently had Reid on his podcast to discuss the Rivera hiring. At the beginning of the interview, Keim gave Reid the opportunity to explain himself to Redskins fan about the perception that he doesn't like the team and that his reporting is biased. Reid proceeded to say that he's only reporting the truth about the team and he doesn't mean to be biased and whatnot. Then towards the end of the conversation, Reid goes on to basically nitpick everything about Haskins (i.e. his whole body language on the sideline when he was not playing, the whole scene during the Jets game when he's pleading to the o-line, and him not being present for Rivera's presser). As I hear, I'm thinking to myself: mf'er, this is why Redskins fans don't like your work! |

Reid is expressing valid concerns. Yes, Haskins showed improvement later in the year once he FINALLY started to put in the work off the field. Yes, Bruce is gone. Yes, Rivera appears to be a GREAT hire. But that doesn't mean we should forget all warning flags that are still there with Haskins. He is a HUGE question mark for our franchise. He has all the physical skills and football intelligence you could ever want. But he needs to take a GIANT leap forward in maturity and work ethic this offseason. I'm thankful for reporters like Reid who are more "emotionally detached" from the franchise. It's not bias. Its objectivity. |

In my opinion, we must understand context of any situation before judging anyone for anything. In this case, who knows Haskins already had important plans or gone to vacation before the presser was announced. Let's imagine a scenario - suppose you are Haskins, you are currently on your vacation and you had already paid for everything, and then next day you got news that your new boss will show up at work to meet everyone. Would you cancel rest of your vacation plans, just to meet your new boss that day or will you wait until after you return home from vacation to meet him? |

That said, Rivera has the ability to use that moment to set expectations. It is not about where Haskins is, but where he can be led. Can he learn how to be great? Can he learn to be a leader? That is what excites me because I think the answer to both is a resounding yes! Sent from my SM-G973U using Tapatalk |

Haskins was in NYC, not New Zealand. If I believed I was in Haskins shoes, and understood that i had a reputation (Deserved or not) for not being fully devoted to football, I would have made the very short flight from NYC to DC to be there at the presser and meet my new head coach, then made the very short flight back to NYC and resumed my vacation. It would have been a very minor inconvenience to me, but been well worth it to show the new HC i was serious about the team and committed to being a leader. To compare it to something that I personally experienced recently - someone I didn't know recently died and their funeral was 4 hours away. But i'm relatively close to someone who was very close to the person. I didn't have to go to the funeral, but I did. My friend was so surprised and happy that I came, as it was just a small service and even some family didn't show up. So while my friend would not have thought less of me for not showing, it meant the world to them that I did. So I think the Haskins thing is somewhat similar. Haskins absence, in of itself, is meaningless. But given everything else surrounding him over the course of the season, it would have been a HUGE gesture to make a good first impression with his head coach to show Rivera that Haskins is taking things seriously. Its one thing to send out a tweet and say you're ready to work... but then not do anything at all. Its another to actually demonstrate it by actions. |

Much ado about nothing. He can succeed as a leader independently of whether he showed up to meet his coach. Or he can fail as a leader, independent of whether he showed up to meet his coach.
You can show up to meet your coach and still fail to work hard enough. Or you can not show up to meet your coach and work hard enough. And you can work hard enough, and still not succeed. Meaningless. |
Re: Ron Rivera Thread
Thing is we don't know if Rivera and Haskins exchanged texts or a even a phone call. Maybe they did and Rivera told him to enjoy his vacation. I'm not going to kill him over missing out on the presser.

Re: Ron Rivera Thread
It never ceases to amaze me how many excuses get made up for Haskins lack of leadership and commitment to the team. No single occurrence would be alarming in of itself, but we have a clear pattern developing of Haskins behaviors (or lack thereof) not jiving with what you would want in your franchise QB. Any one of them can be dismissed as "much ado about nothing" or "meaningless" or "no big deal." But when these things start adding up, its a f*ucking pattern of behavior that doesn't look promising.

He was honest and objective. If skins fans have a problem with it, its on them for wanting to avoid reality and objective, valid, criticisms that didn't just disappear because Bruce was fired and Rivera took over. |

Maybe, but I'm more interested in seeing what plays out on the practice field and locker room in spring and summer workouts. Is it evident to Scott Turner and Ron Rivera that he's been studying his playbook? Is it evident he's getting better? Is it evident that he can command the respect of the players in the locker room and that he can command the huddle? Is it evident that he can adjust protections within Turner's scheme? Is it evident that he can audible to hot routes in Turner's scheme? I'm more interested in waiting for the tangible signs of an improving football player and leader, which we can only see when they start practicing and playing football. I know it makes for dull conversation now, but I don't see the point in projecting how it will go based on these soft factors. Unless Alex Smith demonstrates significant physical capability between now and free agency, you still need to sign a veteran QB anyway to compete with him. I wouldn't change my approach there either way. After that, it's let the chips fall where they may. |
Re: Ron Rivera Thread
I think "subjective" and "objective" may be getting mixed up here.
"Objective" means things like "he averages 7.9 ypa" or "he averages 2.3 seconds from snap to release". Objective things are not generally up for debate or interpretation. "Subjective" means it is subject to interpretation and opinions may vary. I think his body language stinks or him missing the presser means he doesnt want to win = just your opinion. There is nothing objective about it. Also, if you are forming subjective opinions, please do not overweigh things that confirm your bias and down play things that dont. Haskins asking his O Line "how can I help you" on the sideline. A person could interpret that as he is throwing his O line under the bus, is not a leader and is passing blame. Okay but also consider Moses (whose opinion carries much more weight than ours) who said: "He's a young quarterback. He's only had two starts. So he's filled with a lot of emotion," Moses said. "That's why you see me talking to him after the fact that he came over there and said what he had to say. He asked us, 'What can I do to help you guys?' In that moment, it wasn't him coming out there and chewing us out or anything like that. I understood where he was coming from." Moses explained that the Jets defense, who's coordinator Gregg Williams is famous for bringing pressure and blitzing, ran several different stunts and formations that may have confused Haskins. "As a young quarterback, and you have an exotic defense like that, you have a star safety [Jamal Adams] that's in the box, he's out the box, he's a hell of a playmaker," Moses said. "[Haskins is] trying to figure out where he's at. It's almost like he comes over there and is asking, truly, like 'Hey man, what can I do?' Because he probably doesn't understand everything that's happening. "Obviously, he's looking downfield, looking for open receivers and things like that," Moses continued. "So when you get sacked, you're like 'Where is he coming from?' Simply, when there's a five-man protection and they're bringing seven, somebody is going to be free." The Jets defense had their way with Haskins and the Redskins offense for much of the game. The rookie was sacked six times and was unable to put together much of anything before falling down 31 points in the fourth quarter. Two late TDs made the margin appear closer than the game truly was, and Haskins knows he has to play better. Moses understands that Haskins has gone through things as a rookie that most players don't usually deal with. The right tackle has high hopes for Haskins, and praised No. 7's drive and willingness to get better. "To give credit to the kid, he's a hell of a football player," Moses said. "He's in there willing to learn, he wants to learn, he wants to be great. He's playing through a lot of things that normal quarterbacks, rookie quarterbacks don't play through. His head coach got fired after a couple of weeks, and things like that. For him, he's just trying to find his way. We just have to do a better job of helping him find his way as well." https://www.nbcsports.com/washington/redskins/morgan-moses-explains-why-he-was-not-offended-dwayne-haskins-viral-pep-talk-vs-jets For every subjective knock Reid listed, there are more facts that he doesnt consider or mention ... bc it doesnt fit his narrative. Haskins being called lazy or doesnt want to win is 100% garbage to me, in my 100% subjective opinion. |

It is OBJECTIVE to state that Haskins:
- Has had multiple former college team mates state that he's not completely devoted to and focused on football - Had multiple reports during the early parts of the season that he was not putting in the work and effort because he was entitled and miffed that he was not just handed the starting job - Was reported that he did not know the playbook and that Adrian Peterson talked to him about it - Was not viewed by his coach as being ready to start for these reasons, not his skill - Did not earn the starting job until he had a come to Jesus talk with Callahan, begin to improve on these things, with the help of Alex Smith as a mentor - Was seen on the sideline talking AT his veteran offensive line asking what he could do to help them. They did not show the appearance of receiving his comments favorably - Missed the last snap of a play to take a selfie with a fan - Missed the Head Coaches introductory press conference - Tweeted that he was ready to get to work, yet has not been reported to have met with coaches or been to Redskins Park These are all OBJECTIVE facts. Whether one thinks none of this matters, or is a sign of a troubling pattern, is SUBJECTIVE. |

+10000 I'm disappointed in anyone who took that post seriously. Unless Haskins is blowing off Rivera's phone calls and telling his teammates he's too busy partying to attend, I couldn't care less why he didn't attend the presser. And until we get reports of Rivera giving Haskins "game tape" to study at home (which is actually a blank cd), and then Haskins comes in the next day talking about how the game tape looks good, I'm not worried. |
