Initially felt strange seeing these third-day qb's overvalued. But there isn't any other position in sports that's overvalued like qb.

Cosmi Draft Grade
 

Samuel Cosmi – T – C grade

This pick is a great example of the conundrum BPA vs. need and how you should scout players and set your board. Our FO is clearly drafting for need, despite all the claims otherwise.

First, JOK was sitting there. You draft him, you put our D over the top. He was hands down BPA, and aligned with what is still a significant need, LB. Barring some character flag no one knows about, lots of teams passed on him probably because tweener status scares them. We put him a WLB, teams will run at that side ALL DAY. Most tweeners bust. Some become elite players and overcome size deficits. Clearly a whole bunch of GMs and FOs thought the former, or shunned the risk. The point: there are perhaps valid reasons to pass on JOK, but you think of him and Davis, we basically only need one more LB, CB, and FS and every position on our defense has a stud.

Longer term questions. After paying our DL the national GDP of Liberia, could we then resign both Davis and JOK off rookie deals, to second deals? Maybe not. Good FOs think about such things, though they perhaps don’t let them trump all else. But if JOK pans, we don’t resign, he signs monster deal elsewhere, we get 3rd round comp.

Cosmi is the right kind of T to draft at this point. He is not a mauler in the run, but has serious athleticism moving in space. He’s not the second coming of Trent Williams, but flashes serious athleticism in pass blocking. He also seems to lack a mean streak and is HORRIBLY inconsistent in technique despite starting like 3 years or whatever. Maybe he’s unmotivated, maybe he didn’t have top-notch coaching, maybe he simply isn’t capable of improving technique as lots of guys with talent can’t cut it in NFL. So you run into a draft and scouting philosophy here. There were a lot of Ts in the 2nd round range, 6-8 depending how you rate them. Some were good run and pass blockers, but without Cosmi’s natural movement skills in space. Some had solid technique, much better than Cosmi, but less athleticism. Higher floor lowering ceiling in other words. Who do you rate higher as a prospect and on your board when scouting and/or ranking? The guy with less chance of bust, but less athleticism, or the guy like Cosmi with more athleticism who could be a solid long-term LT if coached up, but is little more than RT and maybe a total bust if light doesn’t come on? I’m not here to tell you which should be done, most FOs mix the two, but we clearly emphasized potential in this case. I like it. I like trying to actually find a starting LT. I also like emphasizing pass blocking almost exclusively, the reason you pick a LT high is because he protects QB in passing, not because he is a run blocker. So Cosmi is a great pick in terms of choosing a LT to roll dice on at this point, despite risk.

Rivera said Davis was highest D player on board. We could assume a perhaps higher rated player was at WR, less a need, or similar position. How much higher rated? Even Davis seems a need pick. So you end up with questions about who is setting board and what prioritizing. You have dozens of teams that passed on JOK. You have us taking a player at 19 most teams had rated 35 or later. This exemplifies what a crap shoot draft actually is, how wide opinions of even seasoned pro scouts diverge, why no one really knows, and why maximizing picks best philosophy.

Choosing Cosmi over other LTs is not the problem. Pigeonholing need is the problem. The Browns pounced on JOK after us, adding more talent to a roster already loaded with it because they have often drafted BPA and rounded out roster with FAs. I still don’t think Mayfield leads them to promised land, but their roster is sickly talented. If over the next five years, we have a prospect which virtually every serious scout ranks top-20 overall, fall to us in second round, and pass on that prospect to draft for need and pick a solid second round prospect, we are MUCH less talented. And some team that actually sticks to BPA will be much MORE talented than us, like the Browns, Bucs, etc.

T a serious need with Moses and Lucas both older, not elite, and coming to end of deals, especially with the GPD of Guinea tied up on G and C. Cosmi at minimum should be a starting RT, you coach him up a year, and let him and Charles compete at LT, and the loser slides to RT. So you could look at roster with Cosmi filling a need long term and think we did well. We did. But we’ll never beat the elite teams who consistently draft BPA when we fill our roster with 2nd round talents (or X round talents), and they fill their roster with round X-1 talents by drafting BPA. This is why you have a GM running things, not a coach. Even if Cosmi becomes solid starting RT, or middling LT, this was still not the right choice. If he becomes an elite LT, FO made right choice, but nothing suggests that, or he wouldn’t have been there in 2nd round.

Viewing in the vacuum of drafting for need, Cosmi would be a solid B pick. Factoring in BPA, pick drops to C. JOK would have been an A, not A+ because of tweener risk, don’t like that risk middle 1st round, love it middle of 2nd. Though again, we could be looking back in three years with JOK only a situational player or tweener without a role, and Cosmi a solid starting LT. You find a starting LT second round, you did well. Even if you find long term starting RT second round, you did okay. If you let Lucas and Moses walk next year or two, you need four Ts, we have Charles and Cosmi, so are just getting started. None of us has a crystal ball, so you grade on what you know at the time. We are in the process of building a solid perennial playoff team, but a team that will not contend for SB. Decisions like this, at QB, etc., reaching for need, ensure we will be respectable, but never a SB contender.

This C grade is less about Cosmi than the opportunity cost of players forsaken, and the ruinous philosophy of pigeonholing need when drafting.

QBs rolling off board. Hoping one we like still there in 3rd or 4th.

Scouting Report
Positives: Michigan transfer who flashes a lot of ability. Physical, mixes it up with receivers, and battles to break up the throw. Slows receivers at the line with a jolt of his hands, runs downfield, and displays a burst to the ball out of his plant. Explosive and flashes on the scene, displaying suddenness in his game. Squares and wraps up tackling.

Negatives: A bit slow transitioning to run with opponents. Does a bit of face guarding. Slow getting his head back around and gives a big cushion.

Analysis: Off the 2019 film, St-Juste showed a lot of talent and upside for the next level. He was a bit disappointing last year, though a large part of that was due to the way he was used as a nickel back rather than a number one or number two corner. He possesses the size and skill to be used in a variety of systems and comes with a large upside for the next level.

Benjamin St-Juste Player Profile
Making it to the NFL is a massive achievement for any college football player. When your journey starts as a Canadian high school player — like Benjamin St-Juste — that path to the NFL Draft is even harder, even longer.

The Minnesota cornerback was a standout player at Cégep Du Vieux High School in Montreal. Despite going 5-4 in his two playing seasons, he demonstrated the play-making ability that would ordinarily have college football programs beating a path to the family doorstep. After a quiet junior year, St-Juste exploded as a senior. He recorded 30 tackles, 9 forced fumbles, 2 interceptions, and 18 pass breakups.

However, the lack of exposure meant that the road was longer, literally. He made multiple trips to college camps in the USA, racking up thousands of miles to make his name known. In early 2017, he traveled nearly 3,000 miles to Oregon for Nike’s The Opening, demonstrating a determination and commitment to succeed.

It was on one of these trips that he would secure his opening in college football. After attending a camp at the University of Michigan, he held a scholarship offer from the Wolverines. Despite being a Division I All-Star Cornerback, and the number one ranked player in Canada, only Michigan and Virginia Tech made offers to the four-star recruit out of Montreal.

Analyzing Benjamin St-Juste’s NFL Draft Profile
The most glaring attribute when evaluating Minnesota cornerback Benjamin St-Juste as a 2021 NFL Draft prospect is his size. Tall at 6’3″, he looks incredibly long and lanky, although he weighs in at 200 pounds. The Senior Bowl confirmed what had been apparent on tape, he is extremely long. Only Georgia cornerback DJ Daniel had a longer wingspan than St-Juste, measuring in with over 80″ wingspan and 32″ arms.

St-Juste puts this to good use in two ways on the field. Firstly, at the line of scrimmage, he uses his length to keep opposition wide receivers at bay in press coverage. There are good examples of him using his long arms to jab the receiver and disrupt his route.

Additionally, he puts his length to good use in coverage. He shows good ability to contest at the catch point although he wasn’t tasked with going up and getting the ball a huge amount in the games studied. The best use of his length is in sticking his arm out to make a play on the ball. This is evidenced by a good number of pass breakups without a career interception.

Throughout his career and particularly at the Senior Bowl, he demonstrates that he can be sticky in coverage. He has loose hips and also exhibits good short-area speed to rapidly close on the intended target. This combination allows him to recover well if required.

What are some potential concerns with Benjamin St-Juste?
Like all prospects at the 2021 NFL Draft, there are areas for improvement and potential concerns and Benjamin St-Juste is no different. Teams will no doubt want to do their due diligence around his 2018 injury, especially given the disputed nature of his departure from Michigan.

Despite possessing good short-area speed and explosion, he lacks elite long speed. This will be particularly concerning given the nature of the NFL as speedy wide receivers become more prominent.

A perceived lack of college production may also have an impact. However, I feel like that could easily be overcome by examining how he impacts the game on tape. Will only playing one full season have a similar impact on his stock?

He is listed at 6’3”, even if that is wee exaggeration, he is a long corner who moves with athleticism that is impressive for his size. That physical potential is why he was drafted, but it doesn’t mean he’s athletic enough to make it in the NFL, and he has had major problems staying healthy. He is also very raw in recognition and gets easily juked and beaten by good route runners at times. He plays with tenacity and heart though.

This feels like a pick you make in the 4th or 5th round, or maybe later, not the third. Yet if he pans, you have an absolute physical freak at corner, who can cover bigger WRs, at a position of need. If Fuller or Jackson go down, we are hosed at CB, so this is clearly a need pick for #3 corner. FO continues to draft for need. If this was the highest rated player on board, fire the FO. There were a LOT of players with great athleticism with more proven production at this point, but our FO seems to be swinging for the fences on this one. Drafting a guy who is super raw and has an injury history is really risky, but when Juste can recognize what he is seeing, and isn’t beaten by good moves, at his best you see a guy who shuts down big stud receivers who looks like a #1 cover corner. You are going to have a guy like this playing CB, you’d better have a good FS, ala Richard Sherman with Thomas saving his bacon ALL the time when he got toasted.

We don’t have such a FS, and I prefer more pure speed man corners, even if 2” shorter. Melifonwu still on board, similar player, I just tend to think there were far more proven players that still had massive athletic upside, without injury history. I don’t love this pick, even though we needed a 3rd CB. Maybe he pans out and becomes a freak of nature stud, but just seems to risky for a high 3rd round pick when still some premium players there.

We could be looking back in 3 years with this guy like the CB equivalent of McL at WR, but McL didn’t have all the risks this guy presents. Raw and injured, not a great combination for such a high pick.

It is tough to watch this draft and think FO isn't just drafting each need one by one. This will produce a good but not great team.

Positives: Game-breaking receiver with an underrated game. Fluid releasing off the line, quickly gets into breaks and stays low on exit, positioning himself to make the reception. Tracks the ball in the air, looks the pass into his hands, and easily makes the reception in stride or at full speed. Extends and makes the catch away from his frame.

Tracks the pass in the air and makes the difficult over-the-shoulder reception downfield. Displays good eye/hand coordination in the deep field. Goes over the middle, adjusts to the errant throw, and grabs the pass from the air. Displays terrific timing on receptions and looks the ball into his hands. Plays with balance as well as body control.

Negatives: Struggles in battles. Lacks a true second gear.

Analysis: Brown has displayed himself as a legitimate vertical threat in the North Carolina offense the past two years, as he’s a receiver who consistently comes away with big plays down the field. He needs to fill out his frame, but Brown has all the tools necessary to develop into a No. 2 wideout at the next level.

Hunter Long goes one pick before us right after we reached on a CB that probably would have been there 10 picks later. JOK goes one pick after us. Hmmmmm. . .

Within the constraints of drafting for what seems like need, we have added players at high leverage positions, CB and WR, where signing good FAs is incredibly expensive. Smart.

Anyone still harbouring doubts about what kind of WR the new FO likes, LOL. . . Speed. Baby.

This is the first pick that could possibly be an honest BPA pick to significant degree.

Brown is listed at 6’1” but probably just 6 feet. Decent size for a burner. He is a one trick pony, a deep threat who can go vertical and take top off D, though does not have crushing speed in this regard. He was viewed as a late 2nd to early 3rd pick by most, a mid 2nd round pick by some.

We are going to be cutting a few good WRs this year. You wonder how many smurf burners the FO wants, LOL. We have McL, Samuels, both burners. We have Humphries a quick slot guy. We now have Brown. Then our three long striders, Golden, Sims, Harmon. That’s 7 guys. Do we keep 7 WRs? Plus Carter return specialist. Is Humphries expendable? Golden after just one year? Harmon? Sims, who is FA and thus may cost money to resign vs. other guys on rookie deals? Can you imagine 3 WR sets with Brown, McL, Samuels. Holy crap. One of those guys is going to torch a 3rd CB or safety for sure. Every one a legit burner. Four WR sets with Humphries slot as well? Be interesting to see who FO keeps, but one thing seems certain: underachieving long strider big WRs on our roster have been served notice to produce or hit the bricks. At a minimum, you would think Golden gets another year because RR chose him and only had one year. McL Samuel not going anywhere. Brown sticks assume. That is McL, Samuel, Brown, Golden, plus 2-3 more. Harmon coming into 3rd year hasn’t produced much, but is Sims better? Should be interesting battle for backend of WR depth.

So why is Brown sitting there in 3rd round if rated much higher? He is a long strider, with little quickness. He’ll torch you on deep routes, but not much else. He got by in college by simply sprinting by slower players and fighting for contested balls, and while he can still do that some in pros, there will be a lot more DBs that can keep up with him and won’t get torched. He’ll be able to torch many though, especially if 1st CB on McL and 2nd on Samuel. He should be able to torch a lot of 3rd CBs. What sticks out at you on tape is that unless he blows by a guy deep he NEVER seems open. Far too many catches are contested, and while he makes the highlight-reel catches a lot, there don’t seem to be a ton of catches where he actually generates separation, and this is against some lesser college talent. On one level, this is more what the NFL is like, but if he can’t get consistent separation in college, what is going to happen in NFL against MUCH better DBs. In this sense, there is a huge gap between Brown and McL, who has great quickness and ran fairly polished routes right out of college. Brown seems to have really minimal quickness on anything but deep routes (where he separates with speed, not quickness and takes time to get up to speed), and his route running seems incredibly sloppy and his head fakes, body fakes, etc., ability to juke defender, is horrible. This seems to be why he is never open or gets great separation on anything but deep balls. Maybe he can learn all that, maybe there were more accomplished players, but guys that run low 4.4 40s at 6 feet, while not rare, are also not common. Worst case is probably a situational deep threat who routinely torches 3rd or 4th CBs, but expecting a dominant WR like McL may be a pipe dream. It will probably take major work to get him to run competent routes, and he may never have the quickness to generate separation on anything but deep balls.

I can’t help but think of a guy like Nico Collins instead, but how different is he from our other big WRs?

A speed demon like this in mid-3rd isn’t a horrible pick. Forsaking TE to go CB and WR, higher leverage, is not horrible within the constraints of what is clearly a need focused draft. TEs are cheaper than WRs, but great TEs also much rarer, FO might have been gritting teeth when Henry taken. On the other hand, he is a 3rd round guy, and may have been a 4th if we passed, because he is a one trick pony with major quickness deficit and horrible route running and separation on anything but a deep out or streak pattern. Even on those patterns he doesn’t sell the route effectively and essentially just takes off sprinting. I am guessing that our FO wants a TE with, you guessed it, speed, so that we can have every potential catcher in certain packages be a relative of Flash Gordon. Be interesting to see what we do at TE later in draft, though getting Reyes may have made us decide to deemphasize that need a bit.

Blazer with serious holes in game, that some had rated a bit higher, not an A, not a C, a B pick solely on the elite speed and modest value attained.

Well spoken, high ceiling.
FO absolutely rolling dice that coaches can do their jobs. But that's what usually happens when the coach is the GM. Usually doesn't work out so well, but let's be optimistic.
