Honestly, that was one of the best episodes of Mad Men ever for me. Everything about it was fantastic. I've liked this season a lot, but I didn't think there were any episodes that I would necessarily call "gripping;" until this one, I absolutely couldn't look away.
Agreed. This ep totally blew me away.

I liked how he slid the "buy a friend a slice of pie" bit.

One thing I thought was really cool:

I've always heard that Hamm and Moss really like and respect each other, but it's pretty well captured in this scene. Apparently, the tears were real because she didn't know that Don would be kissing her hand and holding onto her for so long.

I wish I was smarter so I could come up with something better than "holy hell," but HOLY HELL!!! What an amazing episode!!!

SPOILERS BELOW!!!

There's been a cloud of death over this whole season, so I think this was the first time in a while that we, the audience, could sort of guess what was going to happen with a character, but that certainly didn't lessen the shock. The image of Lane just hanging there is going to stick with me for awhile (not to mention the truly horrible site from the museum).

Everything about his story line was so sad and pathetic, but I think it really fit with his character. When he broke his glasses, it reminded me of the 2nd or 3rd season when his English bosses came to NYC (I think it was the infamous John Deere episode) and he quickly took them off before meeting with the higher ups. I guess he always felt like having to wear them was a sign of weakness.
Then with the car not starting after all the jokes about them was brilliant!

I don't know where the show will go from here but obviously the impact of Lane's act and Peggy leaving the company will definitely have a profound impact on Don next season.

Such a good freaking show!!!

It was a great episode. I am kind of glad Lane is gone he is so annoying and I was always disinterested in his character. Where I love to hate Pete it would sucked if he had died (some speculate earlier in the season his death) because I enjoy watching his life unfold.

What was Don's relationship with Sally's BFF's mom? I forgot. Did they sleep together?

I had also thought Pete might be the one to determine his own fate, but never wanted it to be him. Pete Campbell is one of my favorite characters on the show

That said Lane Pryce was one of my favorite people on the show. But what an ending, what a sad and tragic ending to someone who was so under-appreciated for what he meant to the creation and emergence of SCDP.

Don's reaction was remarkable, probably thinking back to when his half-brother committed suicide by hanging himself.

Don had no relations with Helen Bishop, she was just the neighbor.

Good call on his .05 brother forgot about that.

Ok I just remember something about her. I think it was she got a divorce and it scared Sally the same could happen to her parents.

Don's anger at Lane forging his fake name is a bit ironic though

I think Don disciplining anyone for the actions Lane did is very hypocritical of him. Think of all the lying and cheating Don has done in his life and Lane did it once (to our knowledge) and Don had the balls to be that harsh with him.

Don could have easily swept it under the rug and said if it happens again you are done Lane or I am reporting you to the other partners. I really beleive this was a one time deal for Lane. PLUS since Lane was a partner it is not like he was a employee; why did Don have so much power to tell him to resign? If I were Lane I would have come clean with the other partners and let a vote decide my fate but maybe Lane had to much pride to be humbled like that.

SmootSmack 06-05-2012 11:23 AM

Re: MAD about Mad Men

yeah I think pride wenteth before the fall, as they say.

I think though, as when he let Sal go, Don thought he was doing the noble thing for everyone involved. It could have been much worse in Don's mind had he not let Lane simply resign

Here's a question though, does this now open things up for Peggy to return possibly as a partner? And does Joan with her books-smarts become the Lane of the company?

mredskins 06-05-2012 11:34 AM

Re: MAD about Mad Men

Only way Peggy comes back is as a partner and yes I agree I see the window of opportunity for Joan in Lane's role. they may also intro a new character; we have not had a new character in some time. Meagan I suppose is the newest primary character by all accounts.

You think Pete would have allowed Lane to stay on? He probably would have pressed for embezzlement charges and jail time. I can't imagine Lane ever being able to come forward with this in any situation where Pete might be able to lord it over him.

While Don cheated & lied in the past, he clearly has developed his own code of honor which seems to apply to others. And, really, since the break up with Betty, has he cheated?

But, yes, getting angry b/c someone falsified the signature of your false identity does seem a tad hypocritical ...
