WR's are fine RB's are fine everything is fine.
Our weak spot is the intermediate passing game on defense. |

Re: Skins vs. Cards, Pre-Season week 4 Gameday thread
Our run defense did look soft in some of the preseason games this season. I'm concerned with the middle of our defense , London is small for a ILB in a 3-4 but if our NT can keep blockers off of him and Rocky we will be ok. Our safeties worry me but I do like the pick up of Tyrone Carter he is like Bob Sanders small but brings a punch.
The corners are solid but I rather keep Tryon over Westbrooke. Barnes is a work in progress still I assume he will make the roster for SPT. The RB's I say we keep CP, LJ and Williams is cheaper than WP. Williams can play SPT and Parker can not pass block. The WR's position is tough but I say we keep Moss, DT, Austin, Armstrong, and Galloway. Banks will be PR/WR he has big play speed which you can not teach. They will work on ball security with him. D-Line not much has stood out from anyone. C.Wilson may have a break out season rushing the passer. I A, Carter is a liability in pass coverage so he better be rushing on every passing down. Orakpo needs to make more impact plays such as FF. Well can not wait to see who we cut and put on the practice squad. |
Re: Skins vs. Cards, Pre-Season week 4 Gameday thread
6-10 Skinsnut? And this team is better than last season even without McNabb/Shanny... You throw in Williams/Brown at Tackles, a 100% Chris cooley and Jim Haslett on D with a 2nd year Brian Orakpo and yes we are better. Plus we have better depth IMO. We went 8-8 2 seasons ago with less talent and a dumb ass Coaching staff, Especially Zorn. JC is on the same level as Rex Grossman at QB, you can't deny that . Look at overall record and the fact that Rex has been to a SB. On top of that you add Mike Shanahan and Donovan McNabb, some speed and youth at WR and Jim Haslett on D. Id say at worst we are 8-8. I still see 9-7 honestly..

Re: Skins vs. Cards, Pre-Season week 4 Gameday thread
Now that the pre-season is over...what are your concerns?
Mine are 1. WR's still a problem 2. Running game weaker than I thought it would be 3. Running defense way worse than I thought it would be 4. Haynesworth looks weak 5. We may have found a decent WR in Armstrong 6. Without Shanny and McNabb, this team is no better than last year...except arguably the oline's pass blocking....the defense is far worse, due to the 3-4 transition, andre carter and orakpo and other situational pass rushers have been neutralized since they are no longer on the line where then excel. This is a 6-10 team...but I will be an optimist and go with 7-9. What do you think?
I agree, they cant run and they cant stop the run. That wont cut it in the NFC East. Except for Shanny & DM this is essentially the same team as last year but Shanny makes a big difference and he's not going to get hurt and miss games. DM also makes a diff and hopefully he can stay healthy. These 2 people will make the Skins an improved team, they will finish 7-9. |
Re: Skins vs. Cards, Pre-Season week 4 Gameday thread
I'm going to reserve judgement on the running game until I see the five starters on the O-line play a full 4 quarters together with a game plan in place.

Re: Skins vs. Cards, Pre-Season week 4 Gameday thread
My concerns..?
I have none... Our 1st team Defense not only has been vanilla, but has been rotating guys in & out of the Preseason with MAYBE the exception to the 3rd game against the Jets. OK..we let a HOFer look good at the age of 31,so the run D didn't look great even though I just mentioned the rotation and vanilla. Oh yea..Who was the #1 rushing team last season? Yet, we still managed to create a bunch of turnovers and made Sanchez look REALLY bad despite their ability to be successful running the ball. We finally have a Kicker who doesn't force me to bite my nails everytime he lines up to kick the ball. Is he Adam Viniterri..? No,but the guy booms the balls out of the endzone and I see Confidence on his face. That's enough for me... Our return game? lol..Even without Banks..it's got to be better than Sideways Randel El... Allthough our run blocking has not beenthat great at all,I'm not concerned. It's preseason and we have THE BEST coach at running the ball. I'll worry,if it carries over to regular season, but I will not worry about it now. Our Pass protection on the 1st unit has been VERY good. Not perfect and still need to work on it,but I love the fact that our QB actually looks down the field and even delivers the pass. Not just Mcnabb, but even Grossman as well. I predicted we will drop 40 pt's on Dallas in a week. I stand by that... If I had to come up with a reason..just to make you happy about a concern I have...It would be the fumbles and turnovers..Although the majority has been from the 2nd and 3rd teams..I do not like that. But then again..I feel like we have caused more turnovers in 4 preseason games than we have in 5 years total...lol So take the good with the bad I guess... But one thing I can confidentally tell everyone right now... If we matched up this years team of offense and defense and coaches...VS.... last years team and coaches... I would bet the farm that the score would not be like 6 of our losses were last season by 7 points or less... I would give myself a 10 pt spread, that this team takes care of buisness. and it's not even close imo... |

How is this team essentially the same. Our OL has 3 new starters (1 Known High quality player, 1 High quality rookie, 1 known reliable player), we cut a bunch of deadwood and brought in players who understand they have to perform to stay, and we seem to have gotten rid of the underlying complacency that had dogged this team. Does that mean 14-2, I doubt it, but it definitely is a new and different team. We will have to see how that plays out on the field. |

Smart move Beem..That philosophy should apply to every aspect of the team including coaches. For now, hindsight is in order ahead of foresight. We first need to see just what kind of team this is going to be. Haven't seen enough yet in preseason to be able to make a definitive determination. |
Re: Skins vs. Cards, Pre-Season week 4 Gameday thread
Couple of things, like others have said I am going to wait until the season starts to pass judgement on the running game, when we have 4 quarters with the same Oline in the game playing with a RB who is getting consistent carries and getting into his own goroove with the oline.
AH playing the entire game last night, moves him to the starting unit on week one, I am not going to be surprised to see Devin Thomas being cut from the 53 man roster. He can't catch, he has so many drops this preseason and that is not what you want from him. He is not a game changer whenhe does catch and I do not see how he makes the team any more. Same goes for Roydell Williams. Brandon Banks...... man this is a really tough decision for me as I do like the xplosiveness he bring but he has had a really hard time not fumbling the football and muffing punts. The defense has had some let downs in the runing game but they have also been very stout this preseason. I do not believe they allowed a TD all preseason and they also have created a bunch of turnovers. If this offense can turn it on when it counts we are going to be a down right good football team this year. |
Re: Skins vs. Cards, Pre-Season week 4 Gameday thread
One thing interesting this preseason, in terms of the run game, I think EVERY year CP has been here, a huge part of preseason drama came from whether he was playing or not. I don't think one time I heard him complain about reps, but every time I saw him in it seemed like he found the hole and got a couple yards. And he came in frequently as relief for the other two guys in the first quarter. I hope that he is 100% and really puts a show on in Dallas. I would be not be sad at all to watch a CP and Santana Moss showtime next Sunday night!

Re: Skins vs. Cards, Pre-Season week 4 Gameday thread
this team can't stop the run in preseason.?. We tend to forget that most of the time guys don't even go their hardest. Let's wait and see before we can say this team can't or can do anything. Dallas looks even worse on D than we do but no one is saying they will finish 7-9.. Chill out folks

Re: Skins vs. Cards, Pre-Season week 4 Gameday thread
I agree completely C.
That is one reason why I am not "worried" about getting the running game going. CP still has burst and with the way he has put the time inthis offseason and preseaon I fully expect him to reallly get going this year and return to his 2008 form. BTW Thank god preseason is over and we made it out with out the injury bug!!! |

Re: Skins vs. Cards, Pre-Season week 4 Gameday thread
I watched the 1st quarter only, then the wife lured me into the bed...
But here are my thoughts (about the game): *Banks...if he'd hold onto the ball...weapon. He can't be fumbling for every good return. Austin or Thomas could be a safer route to go with returning and still be huge upgrades over Randel El, but Banks' POTENTIAL is almost too much to ignore. *Henson, good job...making up for last year. Welcome to the field. *I love Gano. Finally, we have a kicker. Have not had one since Lohmiller. *Parker looked surprisingly good, which only complicates things. However, Keiland Williams saw time at FB...so could that possibly be his role to keep him on the roster, backup FB? He and Torain need to make the team, great ST contributors and backup RBs...but Parker's success is complicating their place on the team. *Glad to see AH play the whole game, just to prove he could. He put Faneca on his back...looked to be back to his previous football shape. Questioning him...over I think. *Nice knowing, you Bartel....unless you make our PS. *Our backup O-line looked competent, if not good. I have NO worries about the line this year. Complete turnaround from last year. *I didn't know Bidwell was bald, never saw him without a helmet before. *Cards jerseys = utter trash. Looked WORSE than previous photos. Cardinals are RED. Their jerseys should be Cardinal Red. This is as stupid as the Toronto Black Jays' uniforms. |

Man if you think for a second that there is a better Dlinemn on our squad please tell me who he is?
BTW he was not getting pushed around last night, he was focusing on staying at the LOS and controlling his gap. That was his duty last night, don't penetrate but hold your man at the point of attack. |
Re: Skins vs. Cards, Pre-Season week 4 Gameday thread
Our d-line looks pretty thin without AH in there. I think the coaches are smart enough to know how important he is, he's gotta be in there week 1.

People who want stats from AH to justify his pay are going to be sorely disappointed, but people that want to see the 3-4 come together and be successful may not. |

It's not a wonder that the W-A-S approach is the one being taken by those who recognize and aren't afraid to admit there are areas in which this team could stand to improve. We won't know how successful that improvement is going to be until we start playing the games. The 4th pre season game is just unwatchable. But I turned it on in the 4th q and Al was still in there and I just started laughing. Then when I saw him loafing like he always does and have Theismann call him out I just had to turn back to USC Hawaii. |

Re: Skins vs. Cards, Pre-Season week 4 Gameday thread
You know I under stand AH has brought this on himself but to have him playing in the 4th qtr of this game was pretty stupid. AH at 3/4 speed is better then 90% in the NFL and it almost seems that Sh. was trying to embarrass him. He also said that AH might not play against Dallas and might not even be on the roster for the game.

I think the whole AH not playing next week is a rumor started by JLC. He will play, it'd be idiotic of MS to not play him next week. In the end, AH playing the whole game is not that bad. He's shown he can play an entire game and he looked more discipline with his gap assignments (and not just going after the QB). I only had a problem when he was playing in garbage time, but in the end nothing happened to him. |

I'd like to see Shanahan concentrate more on finding positive ways to motivate the player as opposed to the displayed method of agitation, alienation and humiliation. There's no winners in that type of approach. |

I think last night was AH's final test. Get through an entire game, and not bitch about it afterwards. Mission seems to have been accomplished. Fair or not, the guy DID miss a lot of offseason work. I think there was more to this than the coaches just trying to punish him.

Re: Skins vs. Cards, Pre-Season week 4 Gameday thread
DL Albert Haynesworth: Haynesworth isn’t on the bubble—the Redskins’ defense needs him—but he took another step forward tonight. He played 49 of 55 snaps, unofficially, which is a higher percentage that he played overall last season. Even though it was shocking to see a player with his resume on the field in the fourth quarter of the preseason finale, Haynesworth continued to give quality effort on plays. He made three of his four tackles in the fourth quarter and often (by his standard, anyway) displayed his power against guys he should dominate. He probably wasn’t happy about having to play so much in this game, but he helped himself by not commenting to reporters afterward.

The America's Game clip from the Bronco's 2nd SB shows a lot of positive motivation techniques, and I am sure he is using a lot now. AH simply got on the wrong side of the stick, and now I am guessing, at least for the beginning of the season he is gonna see more and more positives. I also don't think you can't use positive motivation on an entitled person, because they see themselves as deserving of any positive relief or praise you give them. |

I do know that all players are not motivated the same way and you cannot always use a collective approach when attempting to do so. Some players have to be treated a little different sometimes in order to get the maximum out of them. It' the coaches responsibility to know how to accomplish that. To continue to methodically infuriate an already infuriated player is not the best method of getting the player to play to his maximum potential. There are better methods IMO that if utilized could bring about a better, or more positive outcome. |

Ok. Mike Shanahan never said AH was going to miss the opener against the Dallas Cowboys. JLC stated he spoke to "someone" in the organization that said that AH might not play week one. Now I have stated this in another thread, and to be honest I do not know why anyone would believe that our best Dlineman will miss our biggest home game of the year. And Coach Mike's Redskins debut. Coach wants to win this game as he does the other 15 regualr season games. There is NOW WAY (unless he loses a limb between now and then) AH is not lining up at RE to start the Sunday Night game against Dallas. Especially now that he went out and played the enitrely most meaningless game of the year from start to finish. AH, DM will both start come the 12th of September and will dominate. Heard it hear first, don't believe anything you read or hear. These two stars will be there against the Girls. |
Re: Skins vs. Cards, Pre-Season week 4 Gameday thread
I don't know, I think if a player plays best angry, than infuriating him, and pointing him at the opposite team would be a good idea.
On the other hand Shanahan hasn't had a lot of success converting an infuriated player into a valued team player, so maybe AH just has to be written off. Only time will tell |

A nonconformist who hasn't been willing on his own, to buy-in [so to speak] and become a team player for the betterment of everyone concerned. Now, the number one question on Shanahan's mind should be: How do I go about properly inspiring a player with unlimited potential to perform to that potential. There's nothing wrong with a coach taking a softer stand sometime if in so doing he can achieve his desired result. There are different ways to motivate and inspire [depending on the individual] the wise and successful coaches know what buttons to push and when to push them to accompish their intended goals. This fire could have been extinguished long ago. |

Let me say that what I saw of AH in the 3rd and 4th quarter did not look anywhere near 90% better then anyone in the NFL. On one play I saw the offense line up and AH standing straight up hands on hips huffing and puffing. When he finally got in his stance he looked awkward. Then the ball was snapped and all he did was stand up, put his hands on the Center, and tried to bully push him back which didn't work. The guy took one step back and held his ground. AH gave up at that point. Clearly AH was tired but he definitly was not using his technique due to being tired. Now if the team can frequently change Kemo and AH out so they stay fresh is the best idea I have at this point. Otherwise any long drives by a good offense will have AH taking plays off. |
