Re: Redskins 2011 Starting Quarterback: John Beck?

In terms of in-house quarterbacks for 2011, I would almost choose Grossman over Beck simply because he's a constant and if you're evaluating your roster knowing that neither Grossman or Beck is the future because they are both in their primes, you're much better off playing the player who gives you exactly what you know you are getting. /run-on

I still think the Redskins starting QB in 2011 is not on the roster as of this day.

As long as he's on our roster, I'll pull for him...but I'm still not convinced he's the best answer for us. Well he may be, but only by default

I'm pulling for him now and, assuming there is football in August, I will be convinced he is the next Trent Green/Rich Gannon/etc. - a pro-bowler waiting to happen.

Then he will start the opener and, as my burgundy biased expectations are shattered by his play, I will be reminded "Oh yeah, he's John Beck".

Imo there is little room for error, whomever they tab to be the starting QB must have a good season, reputations are at stake.

You would think the Shanahan's aren't going into this season with their reputations in the hands of a guy that's only had 4 starts a few years ago.

Oh, I think he is a douche backbencher besides being a lousy QB. Him talking about how he's glad McNabb failed isn't going to enamor people to like him more. He needs shut his f'ing piehole and earn the spot before announcing it to the whole world that he practically got the job on lock.

It's going to be a miserable day for him when Shanahan tells him Rex is the starting QB.

I thought you were referring to him as a human being. I agree that he should shut up at this point, but I think it's premature to call him a POS as a player because the sample size is too small. And I certainly don't think he's a POS person.

Your impulsive name calling sensor needs a tune-up.

I've seen bashing of Beck in other places too, but attacking him as a Mormon rather than addressing his play. Pretty sick.

Religion doesn't matter, we're talking about his abilities. If we're going to be fair, he really has not had a chance to prove he's a bust or starter. Now, is there a reason he has been on the bench? We're going to find out soon. Regardless, who cares if he's a Mormon or a Muslim or a Christian...he could be our Quarterback so lets get behind the guy UNTIL he proves he can't do the job. I see no reason to bash him as a player YET, and I definitely see no reason to stoop to scumbag levels and judge him because he went to a religious school. From what I've seen, he has some good character traits and is saying all the right things now...lets go out there and back up your words now, John.

Sure, bash him for being benched by the Dolphins or not winning starter jobs...but leave religion and personal attacks out of it.

He was screwed in Miami. He was drafted to be "The Guy", and then the whole Brett Favre thing happened in 2008, Pennington was traded to the dolphins because they wanted a QB who would start right then....and Beck was forgotten.

Keep in mind Bill Parcells was high on this guy....that has to count for something

I actually like Beck's confidence. He seems like he really wants it badly and I like that. He's hungry. But just by watching him the few times that I did, he really doesn't seem to be a very skilled passer. I don't think he can be better than Jason Campbell. Gotta get a guy in the 2012 draft.

Anyone thinks thats bad they should hear Brady talk about Bledsoe and Drew Henson during the E60: The Brady 6. His attitude towards holding on for dear life to the starting job and contempt for his backups in both college and the pros is surprising. And it's not really that bad, he's not throwing anyone under the bus, rather just saying that hey "Brady does it to."

Well see this is how i look at Beck either he will burn out and will have a high pick to use on a QB next year or he could be Joe Theisman like where he has a rocky start but settles down and becomes a great QB

Re: Redskins 2011 Starting Quarterback: John Beck?

FWIW Beck's attitude about getting the starting job is remarkably similar to that of Brady's so that's at least one point in his favor.

The idea that John Beck could be an effective starting QB for the Redskins is absolutely ridiculous. That Mike Shanahan would insult my intelligence by attempting to get me to believe in such a fraud offends me.

I simply cannot imagine that the Skins plan to go into next season with Beck as their starting QB. I think that Shanahan is trying to be sly to the point of seeming to be daft. I feel certain that our starting QB for 2012 is not yet on the roster.

McNabb appears to take the high road here. It's plain to see however he does not take kindly to the criticism he's been receiving of late.

This is one of those cases were preseason games will be most important. However at the very least Beck had a strong preseason in 09 after he reconnected with Cameron, so maybe we'll see a huge improvement in year 2 of the Shanny offense. All the basic tools are there; accuracy, arm strength, quick release, decent mobility, intangibles (toughness, intelligence, hard worker, good teammate). All that remains to be seen is weather or not he can put it all together.

Though I agree with your sentiment that it's not exactly the greatest situation to be in as far as the QB position is concerned. However the way I see it is that McNabb didn't really set the bar very high and we still won six games so with a hungry QB, an improved running game, and a much improved defense we should be able to continue getting better as a team.

Either way, rag tag teams that grind out wins with defense and the running game are fun to follow until you hit the playoffs in which case you have to deal with teams that are equipped with elite QB's and top 15 defenses.

The author admits he's a skeptic and did have this to say which would seem very much in line with those who think Beck could be more than just a smoke-screen.
It may be that they're resigned to Beck as the best option and figured, after not coming up with a better option via the draft, that they might as well prepare their fans for it. With the chances increasing by the day that part or even all of the season will be lost to the lockout, it may be that Shanahan doesn't think it's worth installing a new quarterback this year. All of those missed minicamp and training camp practices would represent lost opportunities to work with a new guy. Maybe it's best just to sit around for a year and see if you're in position to draft Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck into a full offseason. [unquote]

Let's just hope he does not play the season for Andrew Luck. I know the idea would pacify the many Luck apologist.

He's unproven and his name is not Manning, Brady or Brees. However, I am in favor of a competition, the position shouldn't be handed to him.

Belichick even claims that they were tempted to go with Brady coming out of camp the year Bledsoe lost his job, but the only thing that held them back was Tom's inexperience. Take it for what it's worth.

Actually I will say this at Beck. I've been looking at 1st and 2nd round bust the past week and almost all of them it was easy to explain why they failed. Here's what I came up. Remember hindsight is 20/20.

David Carr - Inexperience. Started only two years in a mid major.

Joey Harrington - Sub 60% passer in a west coast offense. That should have been a huge red flag.

Marques Tuiasosopo - Numbers made fellow Washington Alum Jake Locker look all world. Shouldn't have even been drafted before the 7th round.

Quincy Carter - Numbers make Tuiasosopo look All-World. Completed under 50% of his passes his senior year with a 6:10 TD:Int Ratio

Patrick Ramsey - 2 year starter sub 60% passer.

Byron Leftwish - Had virtually everything. Arm strength, intangibles, production, experience. Even started his career well leading Jacksonville to 9-7 and 12-4 records. However injuries started to pile up, and combined with his slow release and non-existent mobility he lost his job.

Kyle Boller - Lol

Rex Grossman - Well he made it to the Super Bowl but his TD:Int ratio was a little high his final year at Florida. 22:17

JP Losman - Another inexperienced big arm passer with no accuracy.

Alex Smith - Spread QB that didn't start enough games. On one hand probably should have stayed in school on the other hand he's now financially secure.

Jason Campbell - Sorry don't recognize that name.

Matt Leinart - Should have made it. Played enough games, was productive, experienced in a pro style offense. However McShay has said the two biggest reasons for bust are injury and character problems. Leinart fell victim to the latter. Now a days his confidence his shot to hell. Captain Checkdown is an understatement. He's more like Admiral Checkdown or General Checkdown. Maybe President Checkdown.

Okay this is dragging on. I guess Beck might have just been in a bad situation at Miami. On paper he should succeed. He's intelligent, hard working, strong armed (second strongest arm at 2007 combine via radar gun), didn't start his college career as the most accurate passer (56% first year as a starter) but then experienced a quantum leap in years 3 and 4 (64.5 and 69.3). He also worked under Center and started for 3 years. He showed anticipation on throws. He could move enough to buy time.

Basically the only two knocks were he wasn't the worlds tallest QB (6'2) and he didn't play in the SEC. Oh and he was old when he came out.

He basically had everything you look for in a college QB so the only reason I can guess as to why he flamed out in Miami is because he was on one of the worst teams in NFL history. I mean sure he didn't win a game as a rookie but the other Miami QB's combined for 1 win, and Trent Green started 5 games for them that year.
