Re: Who do you want to start at QB?
Am I one of the only people around here that thinks Rex did a really excellent job running the offense this preseason?
You know he only did it against the STEELERS and RAVENS fist team defenses. It's not like he was facing the Tampa Bay Bucs and their vaunted second stringers I'll give you that. I don't think Beck's preseason body of work was even close to Grossman. I have no clue what football games these reporters and many of you were watching when I hear people say that the two performances were pretty equal, because they absolutely were NOT. What I saw from Grossman was a QB that has matured, one who was able to make very stout defenses nervous. UHHHHHHH we can win football games with that type of QB play. |
Re: Who do you want to start at QB?
Grossman was Grossman.
I really didn't see anything different than what we saw last year. |

Rex was doing Rex... He'll throw for 400 against Pitt, but throw for 120 and 4 turnovers against the Rams |

Re: Who do you want to start at QB?
Rex played well, but I don't like his inability to throw the deep ball. Beck has big play ability because of his footwork and stronger arm.
|
Re: Who do you want to start at QB?
I think after a few more games under Becks belt he will seperate himself from Grossman. The competition is pretty even @ this point but Grossman has had many more games to develop over his career. So, Beck gives the Skins the best opportunity to make a leap..............

Ok Sally, dial down the drama a few notches, ok? The entire season doesn't hinge on the play of the QB. We're going to be a heavy running and defense team with the QB expected to manage the game and make plays when the opportunity presents itself. We have improved at every position group on the field, INCLUDING quarterback. Don't expect Rex or Bex to be trotting onto the field at Aloha Stadium in February but they should be able to effectively get us through the season. If they fail, we draft a QB in 2012 and are able to plug him into a young and talented roster. This is pretty much a win-win. Don't be fooled by the national media clowns painting Snyder with an itchy trigger finger waiting to fire Shanny if they don't make the promised land. He knows this is the best coach and GM he's had since he bought the team and is smart enough not to screw it up. |
Re: Who do you want to start at QB?
Let's face it, neither one of these guys are great QBs.
|
Re: Who do you want to start at QB?
I agree with wilslwilso 100%. Rex looks much more comfortable then beck. Beck also has a problem with starring down his receiver. I'm just not sold on beck like so many others seem to be. Rex,by far,had a better pre-season.

Re: Who do you want to start at QB?
I know it's been said, but the point isn't that Rex looked more or less polished, but instead that a guy with a total of 4 starts played a longtime vet to a basic tie. You put Beck in, in the hopes that he can translate book learning, and on field reality to improved performance over the course of a season.
|
Re: Who do you want to start at QB?
Lets just hope Beck is the modern day Trent Green. I would say Beck starts with a short leash. I would say both are going to play this season if one struggles.

Re: Who do you want to start at QB?
I finally voted after seeing the last preseason game.
As much as I really WANTED John Beck to win the competition, he has not. Grossman looked amazing game one....seems much quicker with his decisions, sure, he doesn't move as well...but the way some are talking Beck is some sort of Vick...which he clearly is not....I don't see the upside we were sold on Beck...he looks like a backup to me...but so does Grossman for that matter. I don't like Grossman firing straight into ILB's occasionally and forcing throws that get picked...but he certainly seems to have a better grasp of the offense and is quite decisive, quickly and that is very good. Beck seems to occasionally stare down receivers and doesn't know how to take a sack yet...he does make some rookie mistakes Really this is a toss up...but to me, since no one has shown they can be the long term qb...you play the QB that is more effective, and without looking at stats but watching every play...I give the preseason ball to Grossman (yuck) |

Hmm...this is a very good point, I would be fine if Beck started....but I did vote for Gross Man |
Re: Who do you want to start at QB?
I think that anyone SOLD on Beck vs Grossman probably is buying too much into coach speak and the media... I give beck the bootleg, with this offense is that enough?

Re: Who do you want to start at QB?
I like it how Beck fans straight up act like the last preseason showing against a second string bunch of bums didn't even happen.
It's like taking 33% of this miracle man unknown quantity big upside mobile QB's preseason audition and saying let's give the guy the benefit of the doubt. He's earned it. Now let me go stick my head back in the sand. |

I would be more worried about our Oline at the moment being able to drop back block then who the QB is going to be at the moment because it wont matter who we got back there. |

The problem is that we do not have a starting QB on the roster. |

to me,the point is exactly that rex is more comfortable in the offense. the coaches shouldn't play the guy that "might" get better as the season goes on. they should play the guy that's ready right now. they should play the guy that gives them the best chance to win in week 1,not the guy who "might" give them a better chance to win in week 9 or 10. rex finished last season as the starter and to me,beck did not do enough to take the starting spot from him. i would also disagree with the notion that rex and beck played to a "basic tie". rex clearly outplayed beck this pre season. the stats might be close but not their actual play on the field. |
Re: Who do you want to start at QB?
I'm not sold on either guy for the record, but a choice has to be made.

If I had to choose, I'd pick Andrew Luck. Kid was ballin again yesterday. Doesn't look like he's going to pull a Locker this year.

With Grossman, we know just how good/bad he can be. Not so with Beck. Each flashed some good stuff. Each looked bad. Beck just looked bad last. I don't like either of'em. I guess I prefer Beck only b/c I know Grossman's best is only inconsistent mediocrity with flashes of awful. W/ Beck, there is the hope that he may be more consistently mediocre than Grossman. If you think Grossman is a sure thing, then you have had your head in the sand for most of his career. |
Re: Who do you want to start at QB?
I think that too many people are judging Beck by the redskins last performance with Tampa Bay. I think that Shanahan accomplished 2 things that game.
One was to play vanilla to hopefully confuse the giants a little. And the other reason was to see how Beck (and the offensive line) played and responded without the help of much gameplanning. As a byproduct, it also confused everyone to who will be the starting qb. I think it definitely will be Beck. |
Re: Who do you want to start at QB?
What if Rex Grossman is actually ready to become a far more consistent QB?
Dude throws four td's against the Cowboys in a very limited audition last year behind a dysfunctional o-line and many many Redskin fans are still convinced that you know what you get with Grossman. Good and Bad. Except Grossman hasn't gotten any kind of real shot with the Washington Redskins to even show if he has actually developed. What if Grossman is in fact ready to be mostly good Rex? Because a mostly good Rex Grossman is an ABOVE AVERAGE NFL QB. Just for the record I don't even know if I like Grossman I just don't get why Beck gets the benefit of the doubt just because nobody has seen him play. Grossman already has the experience making the same mistakes that Beck will invariably have to make if he is ever going to become a consistent NFL starter. |

Re: Who do you want to start at QB?
Neither guy is great, but Grossman got a team to the SB, Beck can never say he did. Of all the QB battles and controversies we have had with the Skins over the time I have been a Warpather and even beyond, why do folks never wise up? Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. We have been fooled more than twice now, way more than twice if you go back to Heath Shuler. Why do you all think Beck is the better option? Just because he is more mobile than Grossman? Remember Vick at ATL? He was mobile as hell, but couldn't get the job done in the passing game. Grossman is Mr. Cool in the pocket, Beck is great in the bootleg. How many guys in the NFL went to the SB doing the bootleg all the time? Grossman has actually started more than one season worth of games. Mr. Beck only 4. I get razed a lot for taking Gus Frerotte for me screen name, as he was a mediocre QB, but at least he made the Pro Bowl, etc. This Beck doesn't look so much more promising the Gus, so why do you jump on the bandwagon so to speak? Grossman could elevate his game to starter status right away, while Beck is 30 and yet to be a regular starter. I understand why you aren't completely sold on Rex, but why do you think Beck is going to light it up or even just do better than Rex? His audition for the job hasn't been so hot.

Yeah right, a 30 year old journeyman QB that only started 4 games his entire career, is all of a sudden going to play like a franchise QB and lead us into the playoffs at some point in the next 5 years. And people think I am nuts for taking Frerotte as my screen name. |

Re: Who do you want to start at QB?
still with grossman. i'd prefer peyton manning, but on the realistic side, grossman is average, they're both 30, so I don't see this insane upside with beck. grossman is 20-14 as a starter and looked better. Mike's going to play whoever he wants to play, but I think we win more games with grossman.

Re: Who do you want to start at QB?
Can I just say that as I read through this thread my initial "good feeling" buzz from the preseason is fading fast. Let's face it:
As to Grossman, he has shown that when he is good, he is better than good enough to win. Unfortunately, both last year and in the preseason, he has shown (to me at least) that he hasn't shaken his bad habits. I saw nothing to convince me Bad Rex is tucked safely away in closet somewhere. And then there's Beck, God help us all, he says all the right things, he has nice athleticism, a more than adequate arm and has the whole "late-bloomer" mystique working for him. Against Indy, he was terrific, he anticipated throws, had a nice quick release and really had a good tempo. But then Tampa happened - did anyone else watch him stare down receivers and make several "Dear God No!!!" throws? I love the team except for the QB position and secondary. While I think the secondary may prove adequate, I am not so convinced about any choice made at the QB position. |
Re: Who do you want to start at QB?
In the end I don't think either guy is a savior, nor do they need to be. Our success is going to hinge more on our defense and running game. All we need is efficient QB play and someone who doesn't single handedly give away games.

I know we aren't going to be world beaters this year. I just hope whoever they pick really makes the most of the opportunity. |
