http://www.thefreehreportonpsu.com/REPORT_FINAL_071212.pdf

Read the findings and the timeline, its disturbing to say the least. The 4 main players including Paterno fully enganged in a well planned cover up. Paterno lied, and this was all about protecting the football program as well as the university.
I started reading this and my blood is beginning to boil. Not sure I'll be able to stomach reading this all without getting in my car and going to execute a few individuals and digging up JoePa's body just so I can desecrate it. My last stop would be at Penn State bringing down Joe Pa's statue.

I don't think this "finding" really tells me anything I didn't know already. I already firmly believed they knew about the 1998 investigation. I knew that it was JoePa that was ultimately responsible for the inaction of the administrators, and he had the final word to keep it quiet. I knew JoePa was the ultimate power authority at that school. I knew JoePa lied and covered it up (as I'm sure he's done with many crimes there) to protect his legacy and football program.

The sad thing is, it wasn't only just these 4 individuals that knew either. Paterno's whole family knew, as did most of those other 3 individuals families. Also, most of the coaches and staff knew as well. People talk. They always do. I work at a university, and I work on the medical campus which is across the way from our main campus. All that said, I STILL heard about our former basketball coach having a affair with another woman even though the press or general public never knew. The Paterno family are pieces of shit. They waited to release that Paterno letter the day before the findings knowing that the report would sink their beloved legend. Too bad. I only wished JoePa stayed alive long enough to watch his legacy be burnt down to the ground before his very eyes. It truly is the punishment he so richly deserved (among jail time). You wished you could have done more JoePA? Yeah, go **** yourself you child molester enabler.

I hope and pray the victims and their families can move on knowing the truth backed up their stories of betrayal by the university. Maybe after these administrators are jailed and civil suits are done, healing can begin.

The big Joe Pa lie from what I understand is he stated he didnt know about the 98 incident, which now the report stated he was fully aware.

I dont think "death penalty" would be appropriate for the program, but a very severe penalty should be implicated based on the cover up and the lack of instituational control.

The lawsuits are going to be massive. Feel sorry for the students and alum. I have no sympathy for BOT, Pres, Joe Pa and his damn family, AD or the football team as a whole.

Re: Sex Abuse Scandal Rocks Penn State

Just listened to the entire thing on the radio, live.

I knew Paterno was involved since the first time I heard about it but wow...

Paterno actually said to Sandusky:
"You did what you needed to do, now I need to figure out how to hide it."

Also, he wrote something before his death asking people not to make this an issue witht he football program. I was angry when I heard that but it confirms what I knew all along, Paterno was concerned with his football legacy above all else.

When you have nutjobs with shrines in their homes and offices (I work with several ladies who have literal shrines covering full walls in their offices and cubicles with Paterno worship), I guess it can turn even the best people into egomaniacs. He is God to many people in this Commonwealth and it's always been sickening to me...but even worse, they STILL support him and haven't taken a thing down. I hope PSU's football program gets the death penalty. Not a temporary one like SMU...forever.

This will make the University concentrate on academics, which needs attention since it's one of the top "party schools" in the nation with plenty of crime on the campus. It would make these lemmings' heads spin. I'd love to see it. Everyone who treated Paterno and the football program like they were gods helped build up this mentality and ego by every one of those who covered up Sandusky's sick acts. They were more concerned about their image and football resumes than the kids, the law and just doing what's right.

SMU got it for paying out a total of $61K to players and Eric Dickerson got a Trans Am.

You don't think an entire football staff and probably players over a decade covering up rapes of kids, plus supporting a fake charity to lure in victims is worse? The whole University from the President and Athletic Director down to janitors who stated they knew about the cover-up are guilty here.

Forget the death penalty for the football team. That's not enough. DOE needs to pull all federal aid to the university. Means no funding and no scholarships for anyone. Will totally cripple the university, the community, and unfortunately probably even people who don't deserve to be punished. But no punishment is really punishment enough is kind of how I feel at the moment.
The handful of students and alumni that gathered in Penn State's student center this morning to watch the release of the Freeh report live were stunned when the channel suddenly switched.

While most of campus was still sleepy, the small group was viewing CNN on a large screen, or one of several smaller screens nearby, in anticipation of the 9 a.m. release of the report on the sex abuse scandal that has gripped the school.

Most were hoping that the report, part of a seven-month probe by former FBI Director Louis Freeh, would exonerate legendary football coach Joe Paterno.

But, just as an anchor was ready to speak about the report, the television screens suddenly went blank. They then turned to a public access channel featuring a reporter from The Morning Call newspaper in Allentown about the state budget.
I understand where they are coming from, seeing that the statue could attract angry people, but it just sends the wrong message.

They really need to start disassociating Joe Pa. from the school, but I think its going to be a slow process. I'm sure some of you've been there, but State College worships him. Every store, restaurant, building, etc. I doubt that's going to change quickly, although I think it should.

For the record, the statue needs to come down but its gonna take a while for everyone to get their heads out of the denial sand.

You would think they would remove it over the summer, before the students get back. They should do it quickly, without annoucing it.There will be riots if they did it during the school year.

It truly is horrible. I do think that this issue didn't occur just because these 4 are bad people. The issue here is the money and power that comes with college football. This could've happened at any school. With all the money involved it was just easier, in their minds, to ignore the issue or minimize it.

I'm not trying to diminish how horrible it is; I just think we need to take a long hard look at what college sports, particular mens football and basketball, have become. Saying its all on Joe Pa., and that's it, is a gross simplification of the entire problem (too much money in college sports). All that being said, its pathetic these 4, and the Board, let something llike this happen.

NC_Skins 07-15-2012 07:30 PM

Re: Sex Abuse Scandal Rocks Penn State

One of the first things I thought when the scandal broke is that everybody should be cleaned out to get rid of the stench, starting with the Board of Trustees. Their decision to keep Joe Paterno's statue up only solidifies my thought back then.

Joe Paterno's statue to remain at Penn State, sources say - ESPN

I find a few things sickening and disturbing.
"You can't let people stampede you into making a rash decision," a trustee said. "The statue represents the good that Joe did. It doesn't represent the bad that he did."

"It has to stay up," said another trustee. "We have to let a number of months pass, and we'll address it again. But there is no way, no way. It's just not coming down."

But privately, Peetz, board member Ken Frazier and most of the other trustees, whose leadership on the Sandusky matter as a whole was harshly criticized by the Freeh report, spoke adamantly about the need to keep the statue standing, the sources told "Outside the Lines." They said they hoped the passage of time would prove to be an ally, sources said.

The trustees "are hoping they can have more time pass and people will forget about it and then it won't come down," one trustee said.

Some alumni groups have continued to call for resignations of trustees, and one trustee said this about the statue: "We don't want to further upset the alumni."

One trustee said the board is learning from its past mistakes.
These quotes tell me that they indeed haven't learned. They are still idolizing a man who covered up child molesting, they are still putting the football team before the sake of people's well being. They are worried about alumni's and donors. Does anybody actually believe these people are going to shut the football system down?...lol No, and they were a huge part of what happened at PSU. Most of the BoTs and high ranking PSU officials ran in the same circles. My guess is the BoT heard the whispers and knew, but didn't really care as long as that endowment grew and the cash cow kept mooing.

I told my parents today that if PSU doesn't take down that statue, I'll drive my jeep down to college state and take it out myself. It's a crime shame that the alumni and fans haven't done this very thing, but they are part of the reason Joe and crew did what they did. They put football before all else. JR, you want to represent me bro when I do?
It's hard to really believe any of the "good" he did was even sincere or true anymore. If he covered (or at least helped cover) this up, why should I believe he was always on the up with smaller things like recruiting?
Well, we do know that all this good he's done was not sincere, but yet a mere ploy to raise his legend and status among humanity. You only need to look at Jerry Sandusky to understand this. Many in PA believe that Sandusky was a bigger "saint" than Joe. His relentless work with the 2nd Mile charity and his time giving/helping to all those children in need. Much greater than Joe's effort to say the least. However, we also know that Jerry's work wasn't sincere either, and probably a ploy to help cover his guilt of the crimes he's committed.

I dont know about "death penalty", but I would think at the least the football team should be suspended at least 1 year and all football activities and multiple sanctions there after (multiple loss of bowls, 10+ scholarship yanked for several years, etc.). Its unfortunate for the current players, but my head cant get pass the fact the protection of the football program was more important than the protection of kids. I didn't think all the molesting started in the 90's but the fact that it probably happened for over 3 decades is just mind-boggling.

Guys, look, the statue is coming down. In fact, if it's still up whenever PSU plays its next game I'll ride with NC Skins and help tear it down. Actually I won't, but I'll ride along and will defend NC once he gets arrested. While I can't prove it, I'm reasonably sure that these Board member quotes arguing that the statue should stay up are coming from one of the five or so new members elected this year after running on pro-Paterno platforms. People like this: New Penn State Trustee Anthony Lubrano needs a dose of this little thing called reality (Video) | Larry Brown Sports

I do need to pushback against what I think has really been some piling on, here and other places. First, I'm not sure people realize that Penn State commissioned and paid for the Freeh Report. They didn't have to do that. More importantly, if they were trying to further suppress this story (as changing the channel in the student union is supposedly evidence of) they wouldn't have taken the lead in commissioning this type of report, or they would have farmed it out to someone less capable and unbiased than a former FBI director. The school has made some mistakes but it is trying to do the right thing moving forward and isn't getting enough credit for that. Everyone got fired, including Paterno before we knew the extent of his involvement (which ended up costing several board members their positions, not profiles in courage but still.) This stuff about changing the channel in the student union is an example. What do you think is more likely? That this was an order from up high to keep students in the dark? (Students who have like internet and stuff.) Or that this was the decision of some 12 dollar an hour shift mananager who probably has never been trained in PR and working under international media scrutiny? If they wanted to suppress this stuff they wouldn't have commissioned the report, simple as that.

SS, I don't get why you are so concerned about football players who had nothing to do with this but want federal scholarship funding cut for students who similarly had nothing to do with any of this, scholarships that allowed people like me to attend the most expensive state school in the country and are basically responsible for everything that I now have in my life. I get why people are angry but to just vindictively wish pain on anyone who has any PSU affiliation at all is just mean, and to show solicitude for football players (who can just transfer to a comparable institution easily) but not for regular students (who can't) is just perverse. I really don't get it.
