Re: Yet Another QB Rumors Thread (Volume 9)

Tannehill's bust potential is really high for me not because I don't think he can play, but because the comparisons being thrown out with Luck and Griffin are pointless. No one with the first overall pick in any draft would ever consider Ryan Tannehill with it.

I don't disagree with a coach who watches every snap Tannehill took at Texas A&M, sees a few advanced skills and things "I can certainly work with this." But you look at who NFL teams are trying so hard to replace at quarterback these days: Ryan Tannehill clones. It's so bizarre that teams are so desperate for quarterback upgrades that they'll consider quarterbacks who will inevitably need to be upgraded down the road.

The book on Tannehill is that you just need to sit in a cover two shell or something similar where you can defend the edges of the field. That's why I prefer guys like Foles and Cousins who can make more difficult bucket throws and can get the ball down the field. Foles and Cousins are far from sure things (though I think Foles is pretty safe if you buy into him being your guy...and there's no guarantee anyone will love him enough to start him) but I feel you can easily scheme out their weaknesses.

I suppose that you could do the same with Tannehill and try to give him open looks down the field, but his inability to throw at the Senior Bowl or Combine has simply left him unable to answer key questions about his downfield throwing, which was never impressive on tape, certainly not as impressive as his intermediate throwing.

The largest difference between Griffin and Tannehill is that when a defense starts to speed up RG3's clock and get a lot of pressure on him, he rises to the occasion. Tannehill just looks sped up.

Was that a joke????? If not, I laughed my ass off anyway!!!!!
I don't think it's that crazy. The fact is no one knows for sure, not even the so called experts who do this for a living. Who cares how high a guy can jump or how fast he can run. The last 10 Super Bowl winning QBs were Eli, Rodgers, Big Ben, Brees, Manning, Brad Johnson and Brady. Go back 2 more years and you can include Kurt Warner and Trent Dilfer.

Eli and Peyton were the only ones taken first overall. History tells us that it's highly likely that one or more QBs taken AFTER Luck and RGIII will go on to have similar or better careers. Why not Tannehill? Anything you think you know from their college tape or combine workouts could become irrelevant in a few years.

It's like they said in the Brady 6 documentary. No one could crack open his chest and look at his heart. What makes me laugh are the comments about long ball accuracy, arm strength, mobility, etc. it's all mostly BS. No one here knows for sure.

Re: Yet Another QB Rumors Thread (Volume 9)

It could go either 2 ways as i see it with the QB situation. Mike needs to figure out the QB position to save his job and here are the 2 ways i see it happening.

1. He needs to either move up in the draft and get either Luck or Griffin or sell the owner and fan base on some other QB in this draft. This will buy him 2 more years, to develop and build around a young QB.

or

2. If manning is healthy sign him and hope he can play for 2 to 3 years. He can spend this years and next years draft to get him some help. And also draft a young QB to play behind manning.

If he brings in a Orton, signs a Flynn or trades for Hoyer and they have a less than .500 record he will be done.

No No No. I didnt mean it like that. I was still thinking of the periods being used as a measurment in some previous post that his post alludes to. I think Tannehill is going to be a top 10 QB in 2 or 3 years.

Re: Yet Another QB Rumors Thread (Volume 9)

After the combine, I think that RGIII may be worth the multiple draft picks - assuming that they don't overpay - I would prefer that the redskins only trade the 1st and 3rd this year and a 1st and maybe a 3rd next year.

Overpay or not, RGIII is worth it - not mainly based on his 40 time, but mostly how he handled himself and what he said with the media. He seems mature in his approach, personality, and demeanor. Although Cam Newton is very different from RGIII (even though others think they are similiar because they are both black and athletic), the one thing I remember that stands out with which they are most comparable at - at this point - is the confident and comfortable way they handled themselves in their spotlight with the media. The physical measureables only back up that they have the tools needed to be successful. I think that RGIII won't waste any time with showing that he's worth it by week 1 because that's what maturity brings - RGIII will know one of the shortest points between where he is now and nfl success.

The rest of the qbs still have to this to learn plus the x's and o's while RGIII can concentrate just on the x's and o's.

RGIII should be the Redskins' first option at this point.

There is a huge gap between RG3 and Tannehill. He's only played 26 games as a QB. He's a converted WR. The guy is a project, not an NFL QB. I think most coaches and GMs would sell his stock right now. He's way overvalued.

Well we will all see once FA starts how it might play out a little better. If Cleveland signs Flynn and Manning goes to Dolphins then the price will drop a little. For some reason i think the trade could have right before FA starts so the Rams will get most for the #2 picks.

Whatever can't fit into a tidy little soundbite never gets mentioned.
I think its important to note that Tannehill as freshmen lost the QB competition to senior QB Steve McGee who went on to be drafted.
Then as a sophmore he lost it to junior QB Jerrod Johnson (also in the NFL) who was arguably the best QB in the conference at the time. (I watched a lot of A&M because I was/am a Jerrod Johnson fan.
A lot of QBs playing behind lesser QBs transfer under the same set of circumstances.
There is something to be said for Tannehill not only sticking around but helping his team out by becoming one of if not the best WR for A&M.
Then as junior he wins the starting spot from Jerrod Johnson during the season.

Another important tidbit that gets overlooked that I learned from this interview:
NFL Videos: Tannehill taking it all in

Tannehill was a QB the whole time, still attending the QB meetings and still taking reps he just happend to be a damn good WR at the same time.
Its ironic that his time as a WR is coloring his perception in a negative light when he has more DI starts then Cam Newton and Mark Sanchez.

Also if you want to see Tannehill throwing:
NFL Videos: Catching up with Cousins

If teams have Tannehill rated as the 3rd QB its likely that they have already found the answers to the questions that you have and likely don't share your negative opinions about his downfield throwing that you harbor.
No, you have it wrong. It's dishonest and unproductive to make the comparison between Tannehill and Luck/Griffin. Physically, it's not close. Tannehill is a good athlete for a quarterback. He can make plays with his legs, and can outrun some linebackers. But Luck and Griffin are two of the better athletes at the position that have come out in years.

The issue is whether Tannehill is in a class by himself - a first round skill set that puts him in a class above Cousins/Foles/etc, or just part of that group of talented seniors who might make some noise in the NFL if they can find the right system. If you have all second/third/fourth round grades on those prospects, then rolling the dice on Tannehill makes some sense. He is, in terms of athleticism, superior to Cousins, Foles, Moore, etc. However, I don't think the limitations Tannehill has shown within pocket shouldn't just be shrugged off.

I think Tannehill throws the ball to some area of the field really well, and not as well to others. I am interested to see what he can become, but know what I'm getting in the prospects who are more accomplished from the pocket.

I'm open to the argument that his skill set and strong foundation in the short passing game makes him the most desirable of the rest of the QB prospects, but the Luck-Griffin comparisons aren't useful.

GTripp0012 02-27-2012 10:24 PM

Re: Yet Another QB Rumors Thread (Volume 9)

Also, Osweiler has a much stronger arm and, I think, much better athleticism in terms of strength in the pocket and quickness than Ryan Tannehill does. I would take Tannehill over him though because Tannehill has that foundation of the quick passing game from his Texas A&M days, while Osweiler comes to the NFL with zero foundational skills, just a raw skill set.

I don't know... watching Tannehill run as a qb- he looks very impressive. He would give defenses fits with his running ability. He's not in the same category as RGIII, but I think he's close- maybe better in some areas because of his experience and skill at wideout. I think he beats Luck in terms of running skills and athleticism - hands down. Once Tannehill gets his passing skills and decision-making caught up to his running ability, he will be dangerous.

Luck routinely breaks off runs that have him outrunning college corners. Tannehill has his fair share of breakaway TD runs as well, but we're not talking about two guys in the same class.

Luck is going to be a great threat with his legs in the pros regardless of system. Tannehill is more than capable of running the ball within the context of the system, with designed boots and rollouts and draws and such, but he's not Andrew Luck or Cam Newton or Robert Griffin physically. He's just not the same guy.

I think a better comp, athletically, would be Stafford.

IIRC a lot of the actual news and content on Redskins.com is provided by Comcast so it's not like the team is going out of its way to put it on there rather they're not stepping in and saying "hey we don't want this on here" which is probably how it is with 99% of the stuff posted there.

I 100% believe so. Which is why I'm against throwing all those picks to get him when there is a possibility 7-8 picks could be turned into 12-16 picks that would help this team with its on going rebuild. With a good OL we would not have a need for a QB who has to run for his life or fails to go through his progressions because he gets impatient and runs.
Yes. Take a moment to look at Griffin.

- Olympic level athlete
- Elite Arm Strength
- Downfield accuracy
- High IQ (likely over 140)
- High character
- Led Baylor....BAYLOR to a 9-3 season including wins over Oklahoma and Texas.
- 4 year starter...err 3.15 year starter.

Tannehill and Weeden, who ironically beat Baylor, have some of those characteristics but not all of them. Virtually anything they can do RGIII can do and he'll likely do it better.
Um- Weeden has all that except the running/ evasiveness.
Strong arm
Able to make all the throws
Accuracy
Great with the fade and out route
Smart
Mature
Already gets along with the coaching staff
Has great throwing motion unlike RGIII with his 3/4 motion.
Can read defenses
Shows patience and mobility in the pocket
Works through his progressions
Does not lock on to any one WR

It seems silly to profess that the guy that lead his team in receiving for 2 years (2008 and 2009) isn't at least equally as athletic.

If you wanna say that Griffin is in another class then sure I can understand that, he's a near Olympic caliber athlete.
But its beyond me how anyone can deny that Tannehill, who was the both the best WR and the best QB on the Aggies, doesn't at least have an equal level (if not is flat out superior) of athleticism then Luck.
To me, and I could be way off base, but your opinions of Tannehill kinda smacks of someone that really hasn't watched very much of Tannehill at all really.
However, I don't think the limitations Tannehill has shown within pocket shouldn't just be shrugged off.
Don't worry about shrugging them off because you're probably the only one that thinks he has them, especially in comparison to Foles and Cousins.
I think Tannehill throws the ball to some area of the field really well, and not as well to others.
This is a generic criticism that could be levied against any QB prospect.

The irony is that I'm not even a Tannehill 'guy' , at first I begrudgingly watched him after he took the top spot from Jerrod Johnson.
He just doesn't though.

The best part about the NFL you really don't need to spend all this draft picks and you really don't need those types of QB's to get to and or win the SB. Curt Warner was no Luck, RGIII, or Cam Newton. Eli is a slow runner and Big Ben can't run to save his life. Drew Breese is borderline he sucked in San Diego which is why they got rid of him. And then ther is Andy Dalton. I guess this year we will get to see if he is good or an anomaly.

Folks you don't need an RGIII to win the SB just a half decent OL to protect him, a QB who can make all the throws, and some decent WR's who can catch a ball which we don't have other then Moss and Gaffney.

And let's not forget Tom Brady the 6th rounder.
Um- Weeden has all that except the running/ evasiveness.
Strong arm
Able to make all the throws
Accuracy
Great with the fade and out route
Smart
Mature
Already gets along with the coaching staff
Has great throwing motion unlike RGIII with his 3/4 motion.
Can read defenses
Shows patience and mobility in the pocket
Works through his progressions
Does not lock on to any one WR
I never said Weeden doesn't have those traits. I'm saying that not only does Griffin have them, but in his case they're even more potent.

And don't discount the mobility. The best part about Griffin is that top tier-elite mobility and the threat of him off the bootleg thereby opening up the cutback lanes for our backs. That threat is invaluable in this offense to the point where we could easily be the number 1 running team next year.

And I know other QB's are mobile but the type of mobility that Griffin brings to the table actually results in running lanes being opened for our backs.
