I've read that he is - if nothing else - on their radar. He'd be a coach I'd want if we were to release Shanny. For the next coach, I'd like to not have a retread; I'd rather have a young up and comer.

Are they grooming AJ Smith to take over for Allen, assuming bruce is given another job in the front office?
Well, David Shaw told a moderator on a Redskins site known for its legendary April Fools jokes today that he shouldn't hold his breath on Shaw becoming the next coach of the Redskins...of course he's not going to talk about a position that's not available at the moment anyway

As for Smith, personally I think yes. More importantly, even if it's not Smith, I do think Allen is sooner than later moving onto another more business/operations related position in the FO

I am not sure who the next coach should be right now. I am still processing the fact that I think there should be one. I was a diehard Shanny supporter since day 1. That all ended on Thursday. I am done. Three and a half years later we still have the same issues. Terrible defense, terrible special teams, lack of discipline. When does anyone get held accountable? How is Haslet still the DC on this team? Is there anyone here that did not know that the viks were coming back when we took the 13 point lead. It's Groundhog Day in DC and if Shanny won't hold anyone accountable then it's finally time to make HIM accountable.

Intrigued more by Shaw then Briles right now. Briles just seems like the obvious perfect fit and that is what scares me. His age concerns me also...I would like the next coach to spend a decade with Griffin not just a few years.

I don't know about you guys. Aren't you more concerned with AJ Smith getting involved? Theirs a lot of negative stuff about him everywhere more than others for a reason. Too me I would be more concerned with this. I feel if he gets in control as GM, it will be twice as worse than with Shanny. Then we will wish we had shanny back. Imagine AJ smith involved in RG III contract negotiations, Ryan Kerrigan, trading cousins situations. What do you think? Hope it doesn't come to that and the skins fans start the ravens more because snyder can't get right.

AJ Smith built some good teams in SD, Marty and Norv failed in the playoffs.

I don't know if I completely agree with that. It's midseason for both teams, it doesn't make sense for him to try and make a declaration that he wants to coach in the NFL right now. I'd chalk his comments up to being coy more than anything else.

Talking about Shaw right? Can you share why he's leaning toward no? Very cool you are privy to this stuff.

I would prefer we bring in a defensive minded HC with one of these offensive gurus at OC to work with RG. Do you think most college HC's would look at that scenario or do they expect HC right away?

Anyway, it's the defense that needs a whole hell of a lot of attention. Makes sense to bring a guy who will shore that up and let the OC and RG have total freedom with the offense.

Shaw is good friends with Bruce Allen, his wife is from the area, and he was the point person in heavily recruiting RG3 to Stanford (obviously didn't happen). So those were all reasons he was interested.

But the more he thinks about it he leans toward his first instinct, which is that he and his family are very happy out west and he just likes the college environment better

I don't agree. Gibbs was out of coaching. Left completely and started racing.

Cowher and Gruden are announcers, they study each team for their commentary, and still take the time to learn the X's and O's to be able to talk about what each team is doing. If anything they have had more time to study the game since their not having to coach players and run an organization.
Does anyone think Shanny gets an extension this offseason?
I'm trying to make my way through this whole thread and didn't want to say anything until I reached the end but .....

Personally I think the offense has not been that bad. It started out rough and I think with getting our $40 mill to spend will help out a ton. Maybe pick up another top notch WR, pick up a couple "better" OL, and maybe trade Cousins for another draft pick and pick up another "mobile" QB to back up RG3. I might keep Cousins and replace our 3rd stringer with a mobile QB and try and get the Rookie QB up to speed.

Now for the BIG issue: DC. I would fire Haslett and replace him with someone other then anyone on the team currently. This is where Allen earns his keep and brings in a really good DC. 3/4, 4/3 I don't care but Haslett needs to go. His defenses ever since he's been here have been mediocre. I'd look for a top quality Special Teams Coordinator as well. Maybe a college coach for that position.

On another note, yes I'd extend MS but move him to solely take care of his front office responsibilities and to guide KS. I'd make KS a HC and let him pick his OC.

The good news.... the offense is putting up 20 to 30 points a game. Now we need a defense that can stop opponents and a special teams that can limit yardage and a punter that can boom kicks. .
Well, I mean, it's really obvious that they've made better moves. Everybody knows that.

You not wanting to admit the situations were pretty freakin close doesn't make it less close. I'll agree to disagree on the point since I don't have a snowball's chance in hell of getting you to revisit some of the key points of your understanding of the pre-Shanahan Redskins. Only time can do that. And even then, your heels are pretty dug in.

Let's move in this direction: the cap penalty. Who on this team (current member of the 53 man roster) is NOT here because we were too cap-strapped to replace them? Gumbs? Hall? Those are the only names I can think of where the Redskins didn't have a player to keep because they couldn't afford to overpay Aqib Talib or DaShon Goldson.

Like it or not, 50/53 players on this team would be here even without the cap penalty. We know that because we had legitimate, cheap competition during training camp, and chose the current roster over those guys.
I would have added Moss cause I thought they were looking at a WR who went to San Diego instead and I'd have to say the RT would have been someone else.

Re: Who's your pick's for next HC, DC and OC?

Not sure if blowing it all up and starting over again from a coaching standpoint is the best route however it is hard to ignore stupid penalties, various mental errors, poor execution, and the inability to play 4 complete quarters. Never been a huge fan of Mike Shanahan but looking at his career, isn't this whats happening now the reason he was ran out of Denver? I do think Mike can coach some football, like him or not, the man has coached some of the game's best, been a part of highly successful football operations, and has been around a very long time. We have a very good offense, a trademark of Shanny teams, and he IMO completely screwed up the defense by 1) hiring Haslett, 2) forcing the 3-4 because it was "sexy" at the time. In his last few years in Denver, talented offenses and absolutely terrible defenses.

He has followed suit as well with player acquisitions. He has made some absolutely boneheaded decisions regarding players and coach selections, but has also made some saavy acquisitions as well. I'm okay if he finishes put his contract but am also okay with moving on and if we do decide to move on...it needs to be some one very confident and strong enough of a personality to deal with RGIII. Yes I said it :). Love the guy and was ion cloud nine when we picked him and watched him lead us last year. With that said, he has slightly gotten on my nerves beginning with the campaign to play week one. He is starting to come of as a bit of a prima dona IMO. If we move on, in really would like to a Mike Tomlin or Tom Coughlin type of coach who will lay the law down and establish a culture of both nastiness and killer instinct. I dare say it...but...a Rex Ryan type would be a great fit. He completely annoys me but watching a few Jets games his players play like they would run through a brick wall for the guy...

If we promote Kyle to HC I'll have to take a WP hiatus till he gets shit-canned in a year or two.

For the record, I don't dislike Mike because he's an asshole. Belichick's an asshole and I would love to have him for HC. Same goes for Jeff Fisher, Jim Schwartz and Gregg Williams from what you hear. Take any of those cats over Shanny too, because all those guys have done far more impressive things in the last decade. Shanny's been terriible since 2005 and before that he had a lot of help being in a weak division. He's in the weakest division in football and and is still losing. What he's earned in the last decade is probably an OC gig at an already SB contending team. He hasn't won more than ten games in a season since 05' either.

Kyle probably deserves an OC gig somewhere too.

Could we keep one of them for OC? It'd seem weird because the new HC isn't Kyle. The plan didn't work.

Atlanta might be our only possible win left on the schedule. Does 4-12 guarantee whole coaching staff turnover? (Question applies to both Skins and falcons)

Hard to see Mike Smith getting the boot. No idea what happens with us though. I'll say this, it'd be a travesty to see us miss out on another quality HC. We've missed so many great opportunities waiting for Shanny to figure things out.

Sometimes it feels easier to envision myself either not watching football ever again or turning coats and changing team loyalty vs the likelihood of ever finding a winning combination of talent and coaching to make this team and franchise to not be the laughing stock of the sports world.

Blow it up. Don't enable and reward this George Hamilton wannabe, his boy wonder son, and Andy Dick looking DC. They don't belong in their current positions in the NFL.

A topic that's been troubling me recently. The question I had for my rational self is: At what point do you take a look at the product you're supporting and question why you continue to do so?

I'm closer this season than any other to just not watching football anymore. The game is changing to less of a contact sport, overly protective of the stars that are perceived as making the NFL the money.

Add to the the amount of 'suck' that the Redskins have employed this season and it's ceased to be the enjoyable, if frustrating, spectacle it's always been for me.

I would spoof a Yelp review of the Redskins but I'm far too lazy.

I agree with this. Iremember watching the Denver Dallas game and I nearly quit football. Football was never created to be a 51-48 score.

Also the Redskins haven't been in legit contention in almost 20 years. Yet, there is nothing else to do.

They're not exactly must-see TV. It's like watching a blend of the last three seasons, except instead of a highlight reel, it's a coaches' cut of "plays that need the most improvement."

Consequently, I'm just not nearly as invested in the 2013 NFL season, as I've been in years past.

Ditto. Kinds feel the same way. Who's complaining to change the game? It seems the players do not like the changes and Hate the rules. Look there is a reason the players are making millions and ....they know that at any play they could end up paralized or worse. Thus the big paychecks. Now if they want flag football then the owners need to argue that there is no major risk and their salaries should be majorly reduced to reflect that. Another reason was owners did not provide health insurance so players had to get their own ecpensive ones, but I think the owners were forced to provide insurance now.

They knew the risk and still chose to play. And their getting paid for that risk. Everytime there is a new law for safety there should be a reduction in salary due to a reduction in risk.

Re: Who's your pick's for next HC, DC and OC?

These are a few of the moves that this regime has made that left me shaking my head:

1) McNabb trade. Why do it when you are trying to get younger and build from draft. Cost us potentially 2 starters for a 1 year rental.

2) Re-signing Moss and Fletcher to stupid over priced contracts. I'm more irked about this than anything. (especially the Fletcher contract) You know you are stripped of cap money and have to use it wisely. Spending 5-7mil/yr on a over the hill LB is beyond moronic. Take notes from the Bears. You have to say......"see ya".....when the time comes. Good teams don't hold onto players for sentimental value. Notice the Ravens didn't bother trying to bring back Ed Reed, and I'm certain they wouldn't have brought back Ray Lewis this year either.

The thing about this is that there were better options in free agency that would have cost us less than what we signed these guys for.

3) Josh Morgan signing. I understand signing him, but was he really commanding that type of contract? Man we got shafted in that deal.

4) Hiring Jim Haslett (or not firing him) from the get go. Didn't understand it then, don't understand anymore now.

I'm not going to rip mike on any failed draft selections. Look at the best GM in the league and you'll notice he'll have a high failure rate on draft picks as well.

As a husband and a dad, don't have a lot of free time, so why am I 'wasting it' on team or more in line with this commercially/corporate oriented enterprise, a product, that is a lousy product.

Re: Who's your pick's for next HC, DC and OC?

I think most of you guys are all talk. You know good and well you can't ever give up on the Redskins. And if you can, maybe football is just something that has never been that important to you to begin with. I don't see anybody who truly loves to watch football, and truly loves the Redskins, to say they're quitting cold turkey. Why? Will you truly fill that time with your spouse? With your kids? What if they want to watch football? I'm calling your bluff on this one. It means enough to you to waste time posting on a Redskins fan forum board - obviously time that could also be spent with the wife and kids. I don't see any of you guys ever saying sayonara! Sorry, but I'm not falling for it!

Look, the way the NFL is, everything happens in cycles. As much as you don't want to believe it, the good part of the cycle will come to this franchise - sooner rather than later.

I've been a fan for over 30 years and I just don't understand why some teams can continue to be competitive year end and year out, but the Redskins can't? They have some young exciting talent, but they just seem to underachive. I am begining to think part of the problem is Shannahan's desire to hang on to draft picks for too long. There are guys on this team that Shannahan drafted that should not have made this team. Maybe the $18 million penalty is part of the reason, because they can keep them cheap. I'm really hoping with $18 million more to spend next year they can address these issues.

My father in law and I have this convo A lot, he's an old school diehaed Dallas fan and he isn't even upset when they lose anymore and the fact that the league is going into more of a College type direction with all of the points and passing yards , I agree it's harder for me to get all excited about the NFL as of late, yeah I never miss a skins game but I admit when we lose I really don't get all down and out anymore, it's just like whatever.

Totally agree. And if something like watching football is really causing people so much pain maybe they need to seriously reevaluate their priorities.
