Re: Who should we go for in Free Agency?
A comparison:

D.JAX
2010 PHI 14
2011 PHI 15
2012 PHI 11
2013 PHI 16
2014 WSH 15
71/80 = 89%

BULAGA
2010 GB 16
2011 GB 12
2012 GB 9
2013 GB 0
2014 GB 15
52/80 = 65%

J.LONG
2010 MIA 16
2011 MIA 14
2012 MIA 12
2013 STL 15
2014 STL 7
64/80 = 80%

To the folks who want to spend $8-9M on Bulaga, I get it. RT is a position of need on which we have skimped in the past. If BB can stay injury free, having him as a bookend to and backstop for TW would be worth some good coin.

My biggest concern is his injury history. Two years ago, the Rams paid big bucks to a former 27 year old first round pick with an injury history. Yesterday, with the guy rehabbing an ACL, and the Rams facing a big cap hit and they cut him. Their replacement, the second pick of last year's draft.

If they sign Bulaga, so be it. I think they should give Moses the chance to develop. With McCourty off the table at safety (the position where I would be willing to overspend), I am not adamantly opposed to paying BB. I just would not be thrilled either.
You're right to urge caution due to Bulaga's injury history. I like him as a player but what I really want is improved play at RT from anyone. I think we need better protection for our young QB's in 2015 so we can better evaluate them. We have some decisions to make about the QB position prior to the 2016 season.

So I'm thinking that signing an older FA RT or making a trade for an older RT would be OK as a short term band-aid. I'm OK with Compton as a awing tackle but, unlike you, I'm not optimistic about Moses developing. That's why I'd like to see the Redskins draft another young OT if they pick up a veteran.

is NOT enough. You don't spend 8mil/yr on a guy that oft injured. When good teams pass up on their own players, it should tell you something. Follow their lead.
Bro, who the F are you talking about?

Long has been a durable player in his career, 2014 was the only season he missed significant time.

I definitely would not advocate for 8M per year on him but you can take a look, for sure.

You guys have to remember SM is not a free agency guy. He said that the day he was hired. Thank god those days over. We're not going to be spending big money on guys like Bulaga, Iupati or Suh. If he was here last year I doubt we even sign Jackson. He's building a team and has a plan. It's going to take time but I'm fine with it. The other way sure as hell didn't work. We know that already....

I think he still signs Jackson if he was here last year. Not a FA guy doesn't mean you pass on Jax in his prime.

As someone put it on Twitter, Scot McC is not going to sign free agents to win the Super Bowl, but he's going to sign free agents to make the team respectable while he builds through the draft.

I'm fine with spending some money on young (mid 20s) free agents in the offensive and defensive lines that can come in and make those units much better than they were in previous years.

This team has become too dependent in skills positions and has often overlooked or made bad FA agent/draft acquisition in the trenches.

The team has a lot of young players to develop, between the players we have and the ones we'll acquire through the draft.

barksdale seems to be in our price range. is he an upgrade over compton though?

I am interested in the raiders center wiesenkies (spelling?)

bring in some under 30 guys for the right price.

i just want a bunch of avg production guys w potential to improve at reas price (nothing over 3-4 mil per).

No contracts effect/handcuff future cap 2-3 years from now.

Yup. I agree. If we had (a) more cap space; or (b) fewer holes, I would be fine with taking a big contract risk on BB. With all the holes we have, however, I just don't think we can afford to swing for the fences and miss. Doing so just locks us into more long-term mediocrity by retarding the development of our draftees and reducing long term cap flexibility.

If you could guarantee BB's health for the next 3 years. Okay.

But yeah, bring in this guy if he's not looking for starter money. Nice rotational player and knows Barry's defense.

i agree. I love the idea of bulaga but i want to see what 2nd round pick moses has in addition to drafting another tackle this year or next.

if 2-3 years from now we dont have a legit RT, then we sign a Bulaga type player in FA and hopefully that will be our only missing link at that time.

we arent winning a SB next year, bulaga is a final piece type FA move. we just arent there yet.

bulaga is not a once in a lifetime FA. every year there is a stud tackle avail in FA or trade cap dump off (peters to eagles).

The #Packers are expected to keep OT Bryan Bulaga, source says. They are closing in on a deal. High priority for them.

okay?

Seriously though,
You can't guarantee anyone's health. TW could go out the first game, what then. I admit, I just want the RT position to be fixed, then we can go through the draft and focus on defense. Moses won't be a solution this year, maybe not next.

I don't think we are even looking at BB, so it seems like we are going to go with another cutrate solution, and next year we will be back here again, looking at FA RT and whether we should build through the draft...

Right now, before FA starts, we don't have one RT that should be considered for starting Week 1, and our LT is coming off an injury/bad play. But hey, lets sign a second rate guy and watch all our QB's play sack avoidance 101 and keep on throwing those INT's.

I disagree on if you build through the draft. At some point the drafted guy is finally ready. And I assume that is how SM is looking at it. I have liked the approach that SM has taken so far. If he can get value, then get it, but he hasnt broke the bank.

I dont put SM 's drafting ability any where near as low as Vinny or Bruce. Even without him having gone through his first draft with us yet. My real concern with this draft is SM hasnt had a chance to get "his people" as scouts.

Im with you on whether Moses is going to be the solution. He is going to have to go through a huge change in his technique that some cant make.

Perhaps, but I think he sees the overall big picture. This isn't a SB contending team, not last year or this year. The Jackson signing to me would be something we do when we get to that level. There was no one in Ashburn last year that sees or understands that. Glad Jackson's here and all, but the signing obviously didn't make the team any better. By the time we get to that point, if we get to that point, it will be time for Jackson to be replaced.

SM has made forays into the FA market before for young big names. Clements and Smith come to mind. And SF wasn't great when he did that. I think it is reasonable to believe he could have been in on DJax.
San Francisco Cornerbacks: Perrish Cox or Chris Culliver?

Fast forward to 2014, and Cox is fourth on the depth chart behind starters Culliver and Brock, and Ward who played in the slot. After Brock went down with turf toe, it moved Cox into the starting lineup.

Cox then proceeded to play at a Pro Bowl level for the first half of the season. He played so well that many fans were calling for Culliver to be benched instead of Cox when Brock returned from injury.

Cox fell off towards the end of the season, but he played well enough that we’re even having this conversation about whether we should keep him or Culliver.

What history tells us is that Cox was practically a journeyman corner that has had one good half of a season in his career, while Culliver has always been considered better than both Cox and Brock by the coaches. Culliver’s absence opened up the opportunities for both Cox and Brock.
This is a random 49er website, but gives a history for Cox, and as described -- seems like a one-year wonder with a speckled off-field past. Would be okay with a protected incentivized contract, but carries some risk.
