Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread
Thanks for posting this video. I think Willie McGinest is 100% correct. He stated the case for Kirk eloquently and succinctly.
FWIW, here's where I stand on the issue: - Both Kirk Cousins and Jay Gruden must be retained and extended. - Anything other than a long-term deal for Kirk would be plain stupid on the part of the Redskins. They need to get this done. - Kirk continues to get better in this offensive system, yet there still seems to be some doubt about Jay Gruden being retained past this season. That is utterly preposterous. Jay Gruden has done a very good job. He must be extended so that his system can be retained and perfected by the on-field leader of this team, Kirk Cousins. It is so easy to envision what this team can become if Dan Snyder keeps the same QB and HC in place that I'd like to think even Dan Snyder couldn't f*** this up.
I said earlier (while we were still looking for a DC), that to send a good message to potential coaching candidates as well as to the team, the Redskins brass needs to go ahead and extend Jay Gruden's contract. They could arrange the extension to where there's an out if need be, but it sends a message that they're keeping the group together and feel like it's building to something special. There are times that I think Jay Gruden has screwed up situational football, but there are other teams when I feel he displays that "gunslinger" mentality in his coaching and is going to be aggressive, because that's what it takes to win the game. Such as going back to the first game against the Giants. He coached very aggressive in that game, because well, if you're going to go 0-3, might as well go down swinging. He wound up winning that game which got the 'skins on a 4 game winning streak. So, I think overall, Gruden needs to stay and needs to be extended. Having said all of that. Same approach with Cousins. While I think it's highly likely they tag him, I really think they need to sign him to a long term deal and be done with it. I think they also need to try their best to keep both Garcon and Jackson. |

Here is an article that says we may not even begin negotiations at the Franchise tag price. No way Kirk accepts that after making a higher salary last season: Don't expect Redskins to offer top QB market price to Kirk Cousins, analyst says | CSN Mid-Atlantic This one basically says there is now rumored "resistance" (AKA DAN SNYDER) on giving Cousins the tag, and suggests the skins might just be content letting Kirk test Free Agency.
Go ask the Cards, the Lions, and the Browns if waiting for the right qb is working out for them. I think you are forgetting football is a team sport, you can win a SB with a great team and a decent qb. We don't need Kirk to be the next Brady, which it seems is what you're asking for. You're also forgetting that those teams in the 80's played in a very different NFL than today. The rules today are geared towards higher scoring offenses which demand at minimum above-average qb play. Kirk has shown he can do that. Quit trying to blame the entire Giants game on him, the entire team looked bad that day.
In fact it says:
The issue here is that letting Cousins test free agency doesn’t seem like an optimal idea. With what will likely be north of $100 million to spend in free agency, the San Francisco 49ers could make it hard for Washington to retain cousins.
You're putting your own spin on this. And what the hell is sportsnaut anyway? As for the Andrew Brandt interview I heard him discussing the same thing live on Tues morning with Ross Tucker. He basically said the team could offer him in the range of $21m or $22m per year, and he expects Kirk would probably take it. The team has all the leverage right now. Why take $24m for one year when you can have probably at least 2-3 times that in guaranteed money with a long term deal? |

I didn't say he had a bad game because of contract pressure, I mentioned that was a theory. Big difference. Do I know if it is true or not? I have no idea. And I'm definitely not in the "he can't win big games camp" because that's a lot of nonsense. I'm firmly in the "pay the guy so we can fix the real holes" camp. |

listened to our Local Skins reporter from the paper and he firmly believes Scott and Bruce are at too much at odds for a long term deal to get done and the most likely outcome will be a deal with San Fran. That it makes zero sense for the Skins just to let Cousins play for a year then walk.

So here is thought say you make a deal with SF then sign Romo for the short term and then find your next QB. I prefer to keep KC but that Romom plan isn't the craziest idea ever. |

My preference is too sign Cousin long term...but if not, my ideal situation would be trade Cousins to SF for their 1st and 2nd round picks. Call New England and then move #17 for Jimmy G. |

I don't see how the team has an ounce of leverage. It all hinges on Kirk, does he want to be here? Btw I think he does, and I think they'll get a long term deal done |
Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread
Get him locked up if at all possible. If you absolutely can't, tag him and see if anyone will bite on a trade. Tagging without trading means he'll walk in '18 and we'll only get what, maybe a 3rd round pick as compensation?

Btw I think he does, and I think they'll get a long term deal done
But this year, Kirk actually doesn't have that much leverage. Sure, he could sign another deal and make $24M guaranteed this year, which means he's gotten $44M in two years. BUT, what if he gets hurt midway through the season? Or, what if he struggles because the Redskins let both Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson go, and Doctson turns out to be a bust? Suddenly his stock decreases. Sure, he could still wind up signing a long term deal somewhere else, but it might not be worth as much as he could get this year. You're assumption is that Cousins would continue an upward trajectory - which of course we all want to see happen - but it's a big assumption. I would rather take $22M/year for the next 5 years and have about $60M guaranteed as opposed to a sure $24M this year with the hope of signing a gigantic contract next year. It might happen and Kirk doesn't seem afraid to bet on himself again, but it isn't in his best interest. Because there is a lot of pressure on the Redskins to make the playoffs and win a playoff game this year. Which means there is a lot of pressure on Cousins. If the Redskins miss the playoffs again this year, I think Cousins' stock falls and I think he could possibly wind up losing money in the long run by playing hard ball with the negotiations. On the flip side, I think if the Redskins are willing to give him close to what he wants, there's no reason why Cousins shouldn't take it. For Pete's sake, I would take $5M a year and live the best life ever. When you start to talk about $22M verses $24M, there isn't a lot of difference. You're still set for life. |
Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread
For a team that needs a QB, the success he's already had will be enough to convince them he can be a franchise guy even if he has a down year. Look what Osweiler got for half a year of starting, and he didnt even play as well as Kirk has over two full seasons. He'll get a massive contract no matter what, especially since the cap will keep going up next year
Injury is a possibility, but I don't think he's ever missed a game due to one. Thats a bet he'd be willing to take Kirk has ALL the leverage. The Skins are a little toddler holding out a doggy treat to a Great Dane but he's already standing over a box of them. They can hope he plays nice and eats the treat out of their hand, but if he doesnt want to play along he'll just take the box and walk away |
Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread
If he's tagged this year he will definitely hold all the cards next year. Now not so much.
|
If he's tagged this year he will definitely hold all the cards next year. Now not so much.
But follow that further back. If Kirk/McCartney decide not to negotiate a long term deal, the Skins "have" to tag him |

Right, therefore he doesn't have much control over where he plays this year. Next year he moves into the drivers seat. |
Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread
I think we disagree on what Kirk wants? Imo if they offer him what he's looking for in a long term deal, he'll say great, they want me here and they're paying me enough, and he'll sign. But if they tag him, he'll gladly take 24 million guaranteed, which is probably more than what he'd get in the first year of a long term deal anyway, and start thinking about how much he'll get next year in the open market. In my mind he's fine with either scenario

I honestly think the wait is more for dramatic effect than anything else. I have a feeling if the 'skins truly want Cousins here, they're going to sign him to a long term contract. If there's any doubt, they'll sign him to the non-exclusive tag which means they're going to either retain his services for one more year, or they're going to get something for him if he leaves. The reports from Jason Reid about Cousins not wanting to be here is probably just bogus info to try and sabotage any upper hand the team might have in negotiation. Probably came from either Cousins' agent (without Cousins' consent) or the janitor. |
Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread
It seems to me that we have differing definitions of what "in the drivers seat" means. When I speak of Kirk being in the drivers seat, I'm talking solely about how much money Kirk can demand and get, one way or another, now or in the future. It looks like the worst case for Kirk in 2017 is $19M fully guaranteed on a non-exclusive tag contract with the Redskins. That would mean that Kirk will have been paid $39M over two years, fully guaranteed, and then be a Free Agent once again at the end of the 2017 season. If I could get that, I wouldn't care if had to play in North Korea.
If the Redskins are concerned about paying a big guarantee for Kirk, well, they've already done it unless they sign him long term, trade, or cut him. In short, the Redskins have already lost the deal. Kirk is not only in the driver's seat; he's already arrived at the destination where he'll get another big pay day. |

Part of me wants to be above the drama and just be patient and confident that this board knows what they're doing, and this is just a matter of time before they sign KC to a long term deal. And we'll laugh about how scared we were to go straight back to the dumpster... Because they know this business and have to be able to see what every body sees. ... Part of me can't wait for it to happen because all the drama is getting under my skin and I'm starting to get a weird feeling about all this. Like how painful will it be if a year from now we're sitting here wondering who our QB will be come September 2018 ? ... |

Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread
I'm trying not to overreact to everything that is going on (or not going on), but I can't help but think that next year we will be without a decent QB again, will have lost our two best receivers, will have a head coach (a good one IMHO) in his last year of a contract with no sign of an extension, McC The Savior out, a poor excuse for a defense still...how attractive is that situation?
If the plan is to never improve, to always have turmoil in the front office, and to keep the revolving door spinning, they are doing a great job and have for a long time. I just don't know how many more years I can support it... |
