You persist in seeing the glass as half empty. I choose to be more positive and to see it as half full. We have a number of good young players who are only going to get better. Yes, we need more good players, but no team has all the depth they would like to have. Also, and I feel really weird saying this, I think the FO is going about things the right way nowadays. I think we can become contenders soon. I don't feel like going through position by position and player by player opinions right now but suffice it to say that I have a much higher opinion and belief in a number of the players you mentioned than you do. We're not yet done in FA and I expect that we'll have a good draft, so there's no telling how much we can upgrade our talent at this point. I'm hoping for the most possible off-season success. |
Re: Redskins free agent signings 2018
I second this. Been years since Phil Taylor has been an effective lineman, at some point you can't keep relying on him.
Every year we bitch about not having a stud DT, and every year we are left complaining. I like Ioannidis but he still has plenty of room for improvement, and if every SB winner of the last decade hasn't taught anyone anything, it's that having a thick d-line rotation is never a bad thing.
Well our rotation was suppose to be helped by McClain and McGee...lol. I'm curious to know what the front office was thinking when they signed these two. Basically they gave us little to nothing. |

We really need to make this happen with Hankins ,it would take care if a position of major need 🙏

Re: Redskins free agent signings 2018
I get the logic but any position group can be depleted with injuries during any stretch of games.
So the long term strategy of picking the best player available is better than passing on superior talent to only fill a need. I realize need is a factor but passing on superior talent, more times than not doesn't pay off. If the FO thought the next Luke Keuchly was available at 13, should be pass on him and pick a different position? And no disrespect but Foster is just a guy, with a 2mil per year contract: https://overthecap.com/position/inside-linebacker
I see what your point is. Then I'd say I rather trade down in order for BPA to match a need, and get extra value. Mainly because I feel you never know what you draft, you're only guessing. And as KI said, you can't have all the depth you'd like at every position. Especially if that means leaving a need unfilled. |

PFF graded him a 85, that's really high. I like that with a NT, means he's not only flashy, he's also doing the dirty work that only film breaking nerds see and that allows teammates to make plays. If we get him and identify a G we can get in the first 2 rounds, then I'm OK with BPA. Envoyé de mon SM-J320FN en utilisant Tapatalk |

Hankins would help us look at CB in the early rounds, I hope they get that done. Also would like DRC to finally sign.

I'm assuming a lot of this 10 million is incentive based. Hopefully most of the cap space is next year. We still need Hanky Panky.

Re: Redskins free agent signings 2018
Note that signing Scandrick does not count against the 'Skins in the compensatory pick formula, because Scandrick was released from his contract with his former team, as opposed to left in free agency. The same would apply to Johnathan Hankins if the Skins can get it done.
They would be in line for a 3rd from Cousins, a 5th from Trent Murphy, and a 7th from Niles Paul. They would also get a 5th from Spencer Long but it seems Paul Richardson would cancel that one out. Scandrick would not count against them. Neither would DRC (who they probably won't sign now), neither would have Muhammed Wilkerson who they pursued, and neither would Hankins, and neither would Pernell McPhee. It's clear the Redskins are embracing a new strategy and I'm impressed, I have to say. They are clearly considering the value of the player AND the value of the compensatory pick. They're intentionally pursuing free agents who were released so they keep the compensatory selections, at least as much as possible. |
Big time meh on this move, I’d much rather have DRC
If DRC's price comes down to $5M sometime in April and he signs with somebody else, I'mma be pissed. Meh is right. But if DRC signs elsewhere at a higher cost, and we end up using the rest of our cap space wisely (hopefully on Hankins) then I'll be OK with it. |
Re: Redskins free agent signings 2018
Hopefully this isn't in the Terrell McClain bust territory bad. That was horrible last year.
Ive already mentioned this would be an huge downgrade from Fuller... |

Ive already mentioned this would be an huge downgrade from Fuller...
Are you grading Scandrick based on his poor performance on the outside, or are you grading Scandrick based on his much better performance in the slot when he was there in his earlier days? Either way still have to discount whatever grade we give him because of injury risk. But I wanted to point out that he's been good in the slot. |
Re: Redskins free agent signings 2018
Lets not forget we have Dunbar who could play the #2 CB spot if needed, he's proven to be a good player.
|
Re: Redskins free agent signings 2018
At this point I hope he's strictly a slot guy. Moreau or Dunbar should be starting on the outside.
|
Re: Redskins free agent signings 2018
Yeah, to echo others' thoughts, if he's in the slot, meh, but ok. I can't believe they'd sign him to play outside.
|
Re: Redskins free agent signings 2018
If Scandrick is forced into a starting role in any capacity for more than a couple of games, it's going to be a long season.

Re: Redskins free agent signings 2018
Scandrick is the dude you are going to be yelling at for a while.

Re: Redskins free agent signings 2018
So Hankins last year took a low base salary, with bonus that was able to be prorated, and then this year and next were salaries of 8M. I think unless he doesn't want to be here, we should be able to use a similar structure to keep his cap hit around 8 million. I would sign him for 4 years, with good roster guarantees this year and next to make it attractive to get him, and try to leave an out at the 3rd year roster bonus.
He has a good market though so our offer will need to make him feel wanted ;) |

Re: Redskins free agent signings 2018
Ugh. I'm starting to get annoyed now. I'd rather have used Scandricks money to add some sugar on top of Hankins deal. Way easier to draft slot cornerback and let him battle out with Holsey than to find a big ole hog-molly like Hankins. Frustrating.
|
Re: Redskins free agent signings 2018
I really hope we don't have to rely on Scandrick for any big roles this year, a guy with his injury history who is several years removed from his decent days in the slot doesn't look like a solid pickup to me. Hope I'm wrong though.

Health has been biggest issue. Apparently he's pretty solid in the slot, but we don't want him on the outside. Would need to reasearch to see his writing on outside vs. inside. Lot of money for an older guy that is limited. In the backdrop of Hankins leaving, I'm not a fan of the deal. |

Wow, the Skins are doing a great job with contracts: Zach Brown's 2018 cap hit is... 2,7M ! Richardson's is 4M! Before Scandrick's deal we have 21M available, minus rookie pool (~4M), that's 17M. So we still have at the very least 13M... That is really smart... if you use it to sign Hankins! Pay him! |

Re: Redskins free agent signings 2018
I'm not concerned about the Scandrick signing at all. That's because the Skins have earned my trust when it comes to building the secondary. The Skins have done an excellent job of identifying players for the secondary and then signing them as FA's, or drafting them. They know what they're getting with Scandrick and they will use him in a way that plays to his strengths as a player. We also have an outstanding DB coach, IMO.

Good point. I am still curious about Scandrick's contract details but you are right about FO making good moves lately and I suppose we should trust them on this move. |
