Re: Redskins vs. Steelers Game Thread
who do you see going for campbell at the moment? think he'd be a guaranteed starter?
Well, no, in this hypothetical he'd simply sign with someone who has an injury at quarterback. He's got starter potential, but he doesn't yet have starter value. In Jim Zorn's offense, he's a valuable quarterback. In a different offense, he's pretty replacable.
Think Byron Leftwich in 2007. In Jacksonville, he was a relative star. He lost a QB battle, got released, and was signed by Atlanta a week later. He was awful in Atlanta that year, but not at all because he was a bad quarterback. In 2009, he's an NFL starting quarterback again, but he's lost the QB of future label for the rest of his career. Because of what happened in Jacksonville, he's now a journeyman. And it's not like he did anything wrong, necessarily. The team just thought Garrard was better. |

Re: Redskins vs. Steelers Game Thread
And that's essentially the issue here when people ask, what has Campbell ever done to deserve an unquestioned starters role. Nothing, necessarily. But lets say for argument that Tavaris Jackson was a Redskin who was competing with Campbell for the job. Would it make sense to decide two weeks from tonight that Tavaris Jackson should be the starter and Jason Campbell should be released?
What if the Jaguars, instead of giving Garrard a chance, labeled him as a "career backup" and decided, on a complete whim, that instead of going with Leftwich in the offseason, that they should trade a first round pick and a third round pick for JP Losman, who was coming off a career high in both Yards and TDs in 2006? Is that logical? You could have made an argment that Losman was a franchise quarterback and Leftwich was not (at the time), but does that make the move defensible? |
Re: Redskins vs. Steelers Game Thread
Kyle Orton just threw a left handed interception.
Full disclosure (as not to be Solomon Wilcots): it was fourth down |

I still think Zorn should open QB up for competition, just to motivate JC anyway. |
Pretty happy with what I saw out of both Mason and Dorsey. I think Dorsey ultimately actually has a better shot because of his punt return abilities
Dorsey Has the potential to be a real threat on 3rd down. Sprowlesian. |

I hope mason makes it as the 3rd running back, he has real talent

I have been bashing Mason regularly but I was pretty happy with what I saw tonight. He does not look like a 3rd stringer when he is out there with the third stringers. The thing is... do you take him over Cartwright with our "teams" struggling already? What about Dorsey, who also looked good? Then you start thinking about those last roster spots. Who would you rather have? Mason or Mitchell? What about Mason or Wynn (or Jackson)? I hate to give Vinny props because people may go on a tirade but it seems like there are going to be some really tough roster decisions. I know it is only one game but how do you cut Mitchell at this point? I remember the lovefest for Jimmy Farris but Mitchell seems like the real deal.... |

Has no choice. One game doesn't prove anything. I just hope Zorn gives Chase a lot of reps in the remaining preseason games to see if he can actually contribute. Would like to keep him around if the worst possible scenario happens with the QBing this season. |

Well, worst case scenario for him, he has made the practice squad. |
Re: Redskins vs. Steelers Game Thread
I hope he makes the team outright if he looks this promising the rest of preseason.
|
Re: Redskins vs. Steelers Game Thread
I just hope Brennan still makes the team, even after Daniels did good tonight. I wish that we would just cut Collins, and Keep Brennan and Daniels, but you know thats not the case. I also think Dorsey is just better than rock cartwright.
Sam Huff has really become a sorry, sorry man. He's going off about how can London Fletcher expect to be a pro bowler if the best he can do is one tackle in the first preseason game (which, according to Huff, was nationally televised). The sooner he's let go of his radio duties, the better.
Unfortunately, I have heard him do the pre-game and first half of both games this year. For a few years it was kind of funny. Now I literally want to change the channel. He said Orakpo was from Oklahoma but the lowlight had to be when Sonny and Larry Michael needed a couple of minutes to explain that it isn't grounding outside of the tackle box (which has been in place for how many years now??) |

I am not surprised. The guy was a stud at probably the best program in the nation. I don't his performance last night was an accident. He has received praise for his approach this year and it is paying off. I love seeing him deliver crushing blocks more than anything and to see him make a play on teams? Gravy... It seems like Thomas is the only potential bust left from the 2008 second round... |
Re: Redskins vs. Steelers Game Thread
Wonder if 70Chip will have anything to say about Fred Davis this week?

Re: Redskins vs. Steelers Game Thread
I was hoping to see more downfield stuff instead of the screens and runs to Mason. But it looks like Vinny and the FO did a nice job in finding a potential player in Mitchell. Could he be our Marcus Colston? He's played his way on the team. Now the question is can he start taking away reps from Thomas and ARE?

Re: Redskins vs. Steelers Game Thread
I also thought the defense was kind of average. TERRIBLE call on Hall. How the hell can an NFL ref make that call and look himself in the mirror?? Mr. Haynesworth didn't really provide any up the middle push. Orakpo played well again. I love his motor. Safety play by the first team seemed kind of weak. But overall Pittsburgh looked like the better team when the starters were in there.

Yeah that call on Hall was brutal. Disagree about Haynesworth, mentioned it another thread (or maybe this one) but when Carter tipped that pass early I think that was all about Haynesworth getting some push and more importantly drawing a double team. Orakpo is fierce! I thought Doughty was actually the best of the safeties last night. |

I don't know why he has such a hard time getting his head into the game. His miscues always seem to be mental rather than physical. |

Don't know, but MSU players have bad luck making it in the NFL. Drew Stanton might end up being #3 QB for the Lions again, although Stafford's performance last night wasn't very impressive. We are more solid at QB than a lot of teams. |
Re: Redskins vs. Steelers Game Thread
Zorn needs to stop taking portis out of the game in goal line situations. Betts is good 4 getting portis a spell but he is not a power or feature, TD scoring RB. Portis needs 2 be in on every redzone and goalline play.

Guy must be starting to lose his mind as old age is creeping in. Madden has started to lose it the last couple years also. |

The TV broadcast wasn't much better. I guess you can see why ESPN let Mike Patrick go, he's really slipping these days.

Excited to see the defense switching between the 3-4 and 4-3 in the ist quarter..they got a lot of pressure running the 3-4 hope is continues

No offense and all respect intended but I don't buy that MSU stuff. I realize the history of MSU players, especially receivers, in the NFL is poor. But there is no necessary and substantial correlation between college attended and play in the NFL. Let me put this differently: there used to be "folk wisdom" that Michigan qb's could not make it in the NFL, given a string of failures. Then along came a guy named Tom Brady. DT has not been limited by his alma mater. He's been limited by his lack of focus. |

If we run Betts on the goal line in the regular season I think the Commissioner will have no choice but to open a point shaving probe against the Redskins coaching staff and possibly upper management. |
Re: Redskins vs. Steelers Game Thread
much improved from last weeks performance in most areas. this short week with the starters playing time going up to half time or better will be a great gauge as to where we really are.
