Jacksonville is nothing but an average football team. Del Rio is doing a pretty good job down there. |

How long should you wait until you give Zorn the ax? Day of? next day? next week? what?

I don't know....I just don't see anything special about Del Rio. It's one thing if he was in his 2nd or 3rd year but he's been there 7 and has only had 2 chances in the playoffs and lost to the Patriots both times. His seasons: 2003: 5-11 2004: 9-7 2005: 12-4 2006: 8-8 2007: 11-5 2008: 5-11 2009: 7-8 season still in progress. One would think by now he would have been able to have a better team by now or better talent. The team just seems like it's treading water to me. Hey Jacksonville, welcome to the Skins of the 90's. Feel our pain. :) |
Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
Zorn fired the day of, Dan has been waiting all season for this moment, and I don't think he can wait even 1 day.

Good question. I kinda figured the next day in the morning like Vinny's was announced. Then within an hour Shanahan announced. But now that you mention it .... if the contract is already signed like some are saying I could see Zorn fired right after the game sometime and Redskins1 in route to pick up Shanahan to fly him in (if he's not already flown in early) for the next morning. I would figure that in Shanahan's contract it says something about him being the HC on Jan 4, 2010. |

I was thinking the same when it comes to Zorn, fired by lunchtime if not sooner. Shanahan though may take a couple of days, maybe a Wednesday press conference. Even though it's a done deal, Snyder will want to let the news cycle of the coaches fired throughout the league on Monday & Tuesday die down so he can own the headlines. |

I don't know. But I will wager that somewhere in Vegas there is a line on the date and time of Zorns firing. |
Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
Zorn will get the axe pretty quickly. Everyone knows it's coming I don't see why there would be a delay in the inevitable. And with the Rooney rule already satisfied Shanahan will be announced as the HC pretty quick too.

Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
Just wondering what people think about Snyder interviewing Gray while the season is going on. Just totally making a joke of the rule. I mean Shanahan has got to see this stuff and has to know what he's walking into. I'm still shocked that someone with his credentials is going to come here. And I'm shocked that Gray would sell out like he did.

I'm a little disgusted by it quite frankly...I get that Danny really wants Shanahan but come on, the Rooney rule was meant to ensure that minority candidates get a fair shot opportunity. It seems that Danny literally was like, send the first black guy you find into my office for the HC 'interview' and then, Rooney Rule, satisfied...send a letter to the league office that I'm done. The way it looks, he could literally have interviewed like some guy from HR or accounting just to satisfy the Rooney Rule. It may have nothing to do with race but he's making a mockery of it. |

That whole situation is kind of bizarre. Redskins Insider - Analysis: Redskins' interview is bit of a Gray area The rule will have to change I suppose to not allow for head coaches to interview when there is no vacancy. What Snyder did wasn't wrong...but it may not have been right either. And I can't totally fault Gray for accepting an opportunity to interview for a rare opportunity but he probably didn't show the most tact there. I wonder though if all this commotion would be happening if it was Tony Dungy that was rumored to be coming here, not Mike Shanahan. |
Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
Gray may have ruined his chances to ever coach anywhere else in the league.

Why would Bruce Allen not be able to get a coach with credentials? The Redskins are a franchise with unlimited resources and a strong fan base. Plus if Allen and Shanahan both have it in their contracts that they are in charge then Snyder is irrelivent. If he breaks the contract like he did with Marty then they both walk away with millions of dollars. There is no down side to the job now with Vinny out of the way. |

Gray is nothing but Snyder's token and Snyder is even a bigger loser for letting this go on while we're still trying to win games. If Gray had any balls he'd just say, "this will be a distraction and if you want to talk with me about the head job then let's do it when the seaosn is over." Not meaning to turn this into a bash Snyder thread but this is one of the reasons why I can't stand his guts. It's just disrespectful on so many levels. Wait til the season is over before you do crap like this. Just my .02. |

I agree. Gray is the one who looks bad in this. Everyone knows Zorn is fired...the Redskins are just acting proactively to move quickly on a new coach. The rules force them to interview minority candidates and they have several on staff. Gray should have declined until after the season, but if he was willing why would the redskins not get it out of the way now? Gray was not very loyal to Zorn and it could affect how other head coaches will view having him on thier staff. |
Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
Snyder didn't make a mockery of the Rooney rule, the Rooney rule is a mockery in and of it's self.
|
Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
The Rooney rule itself is a bit of a joke at this point.
Whether a sham interview happens during the season or after, I don't see a big difference. Just more ammo for the Snyder haters if you ask me. Perhaps Gray was promised a spot on the new staff in exchange for the interview, or perhaps he really is plan B? |

That said, don't see whomever shanahan brings in as DC wanting grey on Staff. |
Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
From all accounts it sounds as if Shanahan has a staff lined up and ready to go. It wouldn't be too hard to believe the new DC already pinpointed Gray as someone he would want. Who knows.

I'd be surprised if Gray is on the staff, but who knows.

There are some real problems here regarding the spirit of the Rooney Rule. But the press has presumed that Gray's interview was a sham because it was in-season, which ignores the fact that off-season shams are no more difficult to pull off. |

Exactly. Let's say for a second Goodell told Snyder no way, you have to wait until after the season or until there is a vacancy. Snyder says fine, the second the clock hits 0:00 in San Diego Snyder sits down with Gray and boom, Rooney rule satisfied. Would it be any more legit if the timing felt better to people? I understand people get upset that the "spirit" of the Rooney rule is being circumvented, but this happens all the time. |

It's not like Snyder did it and now is arguing that he complied. He called them up and cleared it. If they said no then I doubt it'd have been a deal at all. He'd wait until the 4th..do a token on Gray and then hire Shanahan. But he asked if he could fast forward that and they said yes. Everyone can get mad at the league but not the Skins. For pete's sake they asked if they could do it. |
Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
I understand people get upset that the "spirit" of the Rooney rule is being circumvented, but this happens all the time.
Exactly...the spirit is a joke anyways. No one has been hired because of the Rooney rule. All it has done is actually put diversity at the forefront...that is a good thing but it hasn't directly led to anyone getting a job they wouldn't have before. so 100% of the time the spirit is trampled on. The rule begs for the spirit to be trampled on. |
Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
This whole rooney rule spat is being circulated by Mike Florio. I wish everyday fans could look beyond the blind hatred that most media writers and opionist have for the Redskins owner.
Did you notice on PFT that Florio loves to bring up Redskins vs. Rooney Rule but doesn't even mention the Mike Holmgren hire in Cleveland and whether they followed the Rooney rule. Read between the lines people. We could be 16-0 and the media would still hate. If the Redskins become successful we would represent a Dark Empire/ villian of the NFL. |
Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
Well it's not the same situation with the Browns, because Jim Zorn is still employed by the Redskins as head coach. The Browns didn't have a President in place (though I think they did interview minority candidates)

jerry gray should have never done that interview while zorn was still coach. i just dont know what to think since it was reported last week that gray and blache told zorn to his face they didnt interview for the job when things started leaking out. either way, biz as usual for the DS. |

Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
I understand people get upset that the "spirit" of the Rooney rule is being circumvented, but this happens all the time.
Not to nitpik, but I hate when people use "this happens all the time" as an excuse. Just because it happens all the time, doesn't make it right... Anyways, Gray interviewing has put him in limbo as far as future coaching opportunities. Which leads me to believe that he's in line to stay with the Redskins. Why jeopardize your future and your reputation if you don't have something lined up? Gray is the scapegoat for the media and the rule, and Snyder used it to his full advantage to get the guy he wants. It's a win-win as far as Snyder's concerned. And to him, that's all that matters. |

I disagree because before he made a stink about the Zorn issue, he made a stink about the bruce allen hire, same imo. Why are people so mad, the redskins don't need to make their hiring procedures public at all. This is like a blind posting for a job in everyday life. A company may have a person currently in a position that will be getting terminated because he is not doing the job up to par and in anticipation of that move they start to interviewing candidates. Why is it different for NFL coaches? |

He raising a stink because it's the redskins. we burned him on his superbowl pick. lol |
Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
I see. Well regardless of what PFT says, my take is still that the Holmgren situation isn't the same situation as Zorn because the Redskins currently have a head coach. The Browns did not have a President.
All that said, I still don't really have a problem with what the Redskins have done. At the end of the day, if Shanahan brings us what we all want-a Super Bowl trophy-will any of us really care how the cow was slaughtered so long as we get the steak? |

I don't think it is. It's the NFL. Owners/GM's don't wait til after the season to talk to/interview potential candidates w/ a coach who they know is gone. I'd feel worse if they waited til after JZ was fired to start the process. Hopefully the circus will be over soon and we can expect Mike S to be around for 5+ years. |
Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
The Rooney Rule, although noble in theory, is a dog & pony show in practice. Snyder did what he had to do, within the guidlines, to get this technicality out of the way. Sounds like good business navigation to me.
BTW- I do not want a guy who can't sem to teach his unit (defensive backs) how to defend double moves, to be our next head coach. But thank you to Gray for doing us a solid on the Rooney Rule thing. |
