No surprise there. He'd been on our radar, but we actually didn't expect the Ravens to let him hit free agency

Been out a while but yes I keep hearing that Ben Grubbs is a possibility for us as is Aaron Ross.

Ross would make sense because he's another cofield bowen type of signing taking away the other rivals talent.

to be honest, I'd rather have asante samuel when he's cut.

is grubbs mobile and athletic enough for zoneblocking?

Asante is fine for a reasonable price, I would still rather get a corner through the draft though, lot of them are available or a safety, or a corner than can play both. Like the Tru Johnson. Johnson, Markell, DeQuan Menzie or Mr. Norman, plus asante at a cheap reasonable price... might be a good deal. But don't be suprised if asante goes back to the pats.

Grubbs is actually mobile AND was drafted to play for current Skins OL coach C. Foerster in BAL

Winston is. No idea about Grubbs. He's 6'3", 310 pounds if that helps answer the question.

Re: 2012 Redskins Free Agency Tracker

Nice... thanks matty. still, my thinking is that if the ravens offered him a very good deal, then we'd have to up the ante to get him here. OG is not a position i think it would be wise to pay through the nose for. id rather go with what we have and draft someone to develop in the 3rd.

Sounds like about as good of a fit as Eric Winston would be here.

IF we signed Grubbs I would expect us to trade Chester back to Baltimore

as far as i know, winston hasnt expressed interest in us and we havent in him (likley due to his asking price and our not being able to afford him after the other owners screwed us out of 18MM).
Wonder if he can play RT?
i looked back over his draft profile and he was referred to as a "pure guard" a number of times. who knows though.

On twitter people who were listening to Eric Winston talking on Sirius sports radio heard him say that he knows his best success would be in the Zone Blocking Scheme. Miami isn't a ZBS team. I don't know about the Chiefs and Rams either. I KNOW we have inquired about him, so we'll see.

pretty sure neither rams or chiefs run zbs; however, theyre probably willing and able to pay more than us. in the end, these things usually come down to money. if we could restructure some contracts (like trent williams) to make room for it, id be thrilled.

Eagles free-agent G Evan Mathis drawing interest from Colts and Redskins. Some consider him one of league's most under-rated players.

Or, can Lichtensteiger? :D

Maybe Griffin's running ability will actually help us get by with a lesser line.

Or, he'll end up with broken ribs like Vick.

Re: 2012 Redskins Free Agency Tracker

The Redskins need a play maker in the secondary. If they don't land Brandon Meriweather, then they will have to look to the NFL draft. Maybe, possibly, then can find a shiny gem in the third or 4th round.

Merriweather would make me feel alot better about our saftey positions. Though his personality is not much different then LL's.

“@granthpaulsen: He'll be 32 on opening day. 8-yr vet has missed 2 games since '05. RT @JasonLaCanfora #Browns announce release of stalwart G Eric Steinbach”

I know he's not In Shannys ideal age range for FAs but only missing two games since 05? He could be a one or two year stop gap until we develop a draft pick or sign someone in FA next year.

so, OL: ben grubbs, eric winston (looking doubtful), evan mathis
WR: royal confirmed yet?
CB: aaron ross (i like)
S: meriweather (i'd imagine we'd be looking at at least 1-2 more guys here)

I imagine our draft is going to be OL/DB heavy, though we'd probably look for one guy (db or WR) that can do returns if royal isn't here.
Chris Russell said last night we really wanted him but I had never heard of him before. He'd definitely be cheaper than Grubbs.
Apparently he's really underappreciated.

Strengths: Mathis is a long, lean and athletic offensive lineman who could play any position in a pinch, although his best position is guard. He plays smart and can handle the opponent with good technique and leverage. Mathis is a good pulling guard and has good vision in the second level to find linebackers to hit. Overall he is a very consistent player.

Weaknesses: Just about the only weakness in Mathis' game is that he's not much of a power guard, but that's not his game. With the help of his center, Kyle Cook, the two can keep the power defensive tackles away from the quarterback. I should note that I've seen him lose his temper ont he field and take an unnecessary personal foul penalty. Off the field, Mathis call it how he sees it. As fans, we love that, but I assume the Bengals front office may not.

Overall Impression: Every time Mathis entered the game, you could sense the difference in the offensive line's play as an entire unit. The entire line was more athletic, didn't have as many false starts and seemed to have more confidence when it was Evan's turn to play. I don't know why he wasn't the full-time starting left guard. He was superior to Nate Livings in almost every facet of the game. Most fans would love for him to return in 2011, but I don't think the Bengals value (or don't know his value) enough to offer him a fair salary. Mathis has played like a starter in the NFL and it's a shame that it hasn't worked in Cincinnati.
