The team can make this work, just taking a quick look at the cap sheets I see Hall, Moss, Trent W., Cofield, Bowen, Morgan, and Garcon all have numbers that could be reduced for 2013 to clear up room.

And if there's one thing the Redskins are good at, it's making cap space. We'll be able to keep our players and make a decent signing or two.

I think you two are both missing the point of the article. Unless i'm missing something, the problem isnt that we can't restructure contracts. Its that the contracts are fairly small compared to the contracts we've restructured in the past. In other words, we cant just restructure a few contracts and create 20MM in cap space like we have in the past. We'd have to restructure AND EXTEND the contracts of a number of aging veterans (hurting us in future years) to create a fairly small amount of cap space in 2013. In doing so, we'd essentially be giving OURSELVES a cap penalty in 2014, 2015, etc.

We may be better off just eating the bullet in 2013 by only making the minimum number of restructures we have to to get under the cap, resign our own guys, and make budget acquisitions (like we did this year on defense). Then, we're set up to be extremely flexible in 2014 and beyond.

I imagine there will be some amount of cap restructures that let us get the guys they are interested in, but without pushing more than x% of the cap penalty forward through cap magic. My guess is that they would try to keep about 60% of the penalty in this year, and move the rest forward by minor restructures that turn into dead cap if we cut someone. One good thing is we have quite a few midrange guys that we might just want to lock up an extra year or two that would give us that same flexibility.

I guess I basically believe that if we made it through last year when the final punishment wasn't proclaimed until right before FA(even if they had some concept it was coming), then this year they will be able to make it work with the time and knowledge they had to prepare for it.

Point is they're gonna have to do something in order to clear up some room. There's options, more limited than in the past but they can still make some things work.

some things, yes. your response was pretty measured but i wanted to point out that coff's interpretation of your comment seems to be that the skins could do what they always do. My fear is thats exactly what the skins always used to do under Cerrato. I dont want to go back there. This team was 10-6 playing with a rookie RGIII who was injured a good portion of the season, no fred davis and garcon for huge chunks of time, and a defense that was down 4 ke starters the entire season.

If everyone comes back healthy - and our younger players now have an extra year of experience, i think we'll be alot better in 2013 if we just keep our core guys together. I dont think we have a NEED to get any big money free agents. Certainly not at the expense of future seasons. Id rather be conservative this offseason and dont do anything crazy that puts future seasons at risk. we'll have plenty of money to spend in 2014.

I agree. Plus we get Davis, Carriker and Rak back. Just need to add a player in the secondary and have another productive draft

However, we had low expectations last year. Next year this team will be expected to make the playoffs. With or w/out RG3. How will be play with those expectations?
Agreed lets concentrate on areas of need. Secondary oline and mlb. Dont really want to see any moves or picks outside of there.
Guess what? We're not even going to be able to agree on areas of need. I think we have more needs than just DB, OL, and ILB.

For one, we need a competent backup RB. Helu is still not running after his injury and Royster is your typical Big Ten plodder. If Morris goes down - and he's sure to be injured enough to miss time at some point - we've got nada.

We also need one more TE. I can't imagine Cooley coming back and Niles Paul is no TE (or KR), although he is good on kick coverage. That means we have Fred Davis coming off of injury and Logan Paulsen at TE.

We need a DT who is very good at rushing the passer to apply pressure up the middle on passing downs.

We need an explosive player on offense, either at RB or WR. Maybe someone like RB Kenjon Barner or WR Marquise Goodwin (I don't see a FA who can meet this need).

Delmas could be a low risk high reward type guy. Not sure what kind of injury he had, just that it was a knee and kept him out of 8 games this year. He was a good/very good safety his first couple years and, if recovered could be a nice pick up.

"If recovered" being key.

GWinSkins83 01-29-2013 06:32 AM

Re: 2013 Free Agents

Louis Delmas would be a good signing and draft he's student Jonathan Cyprien. Safety problem solved. Next it might be out there but Titus Young would be a beast in this offense. Him and Pierre would be a dynamic duo.

Re: 2013 Free Agents

I personally think we need a scat back, a Darren Sporles type. Morris is a powerful runner. Additionally, I think Fred Davis is luxury we cannot afford with the cap number the way it is, I hope he resigns... Just dont see it.

Safeties, I acutally think we will be okay with what we have. Merriweather and Jackson should come back strong, Corners started to play very well on the back half of the season, now if they can keep it up remains to be seen. Hopefully Minnifield and Crawford will have a good camp, but nothing to bank on just yet. Orakpo and Kerrigan should help with the pass rush, with Jackson being a strong rotational guy.

I might be in the minority, I just do not think we need that much to really turn the corner. RGIII needs to be a better passer and the damn wide receivers are getting open but struggle to catch the ball.

Right tackle is a concern, but the left side and interior looked pretty solid.

As much as we all love Fletcher, he is getting old and losing speed quickly. MLB has to be a area of need.

I think we all agree there is going to be some money that will need to be moved around and/or restructured.

This offseason I would look more toward depth versus the big name signings.....

Thoughts?

Re: 2013 Free Agents

JayRoc, Ive been calling for a 3rd down, change of pace back as well. I think there is a need and Helu cant stay healthy. So I strongly agree there.

But safeties and corners you're completely wrong. Merriweather was injuried all year and Jackson is a tweed head. Jackson absolutely should not come back. Merriweather should be back, but you cannot depend on him. We need a new starter at FS and another young draft pick at SS. We need major work at CB too. Hall cap number is way to large, Minnefield is chronically injured and Crawford is still a project.

We can afford Davis and think he is a must sign. We have the leverage there as well. I expect a small deal with decent numbers.

Re: 2013 Free Agents

T. Jackson can't have his case heard for reinstatement until 8/31/13 at the earliest. Probably not a good idea to rely on him for anything.

Re: 2013 Free Agents

I believe we'll see Hightower back. He should be healthy by now after sitting out a whole year. He'd make an excellent 3rd-down back. He gets yards in big chunks and is also a great pass-blocker.

Hopefully he can stay healthy if only used on occasional 3rd downs along with Helu.

Well Slaton is still out there, and we showed a lot of interest in Justin Forsett and Antone Smith (though he's an RFA) last summer as well

Reggie Bush is gonna be looking to get paid. And I think someone is gonna dish out, think we will get priced out with our cap issues. Is he gonna be 28 when the season starts? Think he'd probably want to go someone with a big role.

Can we afford to sign everyone plus beef up the oline, and secondary and keep helu, morris, and hightower? I know it depends alot on the draft but again i just dont see running back as a position where we need to spend money. Mlb, secondary, oline.

Like the ones the Ravens don't make even though everyone thinks they should sign x player. One of the best if not the best drafting organizations in the NFL and rarely make any news with free agency. The Boldin trade for some low draft picks and McKinnie for two years and something around 8 million were their biggest moves recently.

Best players on each team are 99% of the time drafted and developed by that same team.

Agree with you that a scat back would be nice, but i dont think its a super high priority. if helu comes back, he could fill that role... i dont think Davis will be that expensive to resign. Between the injury and suspension, i dont think he'll be in high demand. 3Mil/year should be enough to keep him.
Safeties, I acutally think we will be okay with what we have. I agree with you here. It would be nice to upgrade the defensive backfield, but as you mentioned, play improved as the season went on. I think our DBs will be "ok" as long as we have orakpo and carriker back take the pressure off our DBs.
I might be in the minority, I just do not think we need that much to really turn the corner. RGIII needs to be a better passer and the damn wide receivers are getting open but struggle to catch the ball.
I agree with your first sentence, but dont think RGIII needs to be a better passer. He already IS a great passer. I chalk his late season accuracy struggles, to the injury preventing him from planting properly. Receivers do need to do a better job of catching the ball. It seems, as a group, they either all caught everything or they all dropped everything in any given game. not sure what that wasabout.
Right tackle is a concern, but the left side and interior looked pretty solid.
I agree with you. The sad thing is, there are quite a few stud RTs coming available this offseason, but we wont have alot of money to sign them. Maybe one of last years rookies steps up and we can get buy with adding a lower-tier value RT in free agency to compete for a starting spot/add valuable depth.
As much as we all love Fletcher, he is getting old and losing speed quickly. MLB has to be a area of need.
Fletcher IS getting old, but i dont agree that he's losing speed quickly or that MLB is an area of need. He had one horrible game vs the steelers, but, other than that, was exceptional.

He was 8th in the league in combined tackles/assists last year.

He was 7th in interceptions .

He was 1st in interceptions among linebackers.

London Fletcher is one of the leagues elite linebackers. Period.

Obvioulsy, he cant keep playing at this level forever, but he's shown very little signs of slowing down. For the money, we wont find anyone better to QB our defense. We have guys on the roster who we're grooming to step in when he does retire, but we dont need to actively go out looking for someone.
I think we all agree there is going to be some money that will need to be moved around and/or restructured.

I agree with your thoughts. If we didnt have the 18MM cap hit, id say we should sign atleast 2 top DBs and a stud RT, but given the hit, i think our top "big signings" should be resigning Fred Davis and the one man gang.

Davis would be near the top of my list of offseason priorities. The guy is a top 10 TE in this league and adds a valuable dimension to the offense. Not many TE's can stretch the field like he can and rack up yards after the catch.

Agreed. Also, Branden Albert is the first big name we should sign. RT problem fixed and we'd have a VERY solid O-line all the way across.

From the other article, Ryan Harris would be an outstanding pickup at RT also. If he can avoid being another Jammal Brown that is...he's had injury issues.

If Goldsons leaves San Fran I don't see him going somewhere else for a low price. You go somewhere for a low price usually because they are super bowl contenders and you are chasing those rings, the problem is he already is on one plus San Fran has some cap room. I think any deal we could offer him they probably would have already offered him before.
