Never stand pat keep trying to improve. SF's D gave up an avg 30 points a game in the playoffs, albeit to some pretty good Offenses. |
@Jimmy_Beast: If KC's 2 to SF accurate, here are the Niners' picks: 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 5, 5, 6, 6, 7, 7. Also projected to get 4, 7, 7 comp picks. Unreal.
Wow I'd love to know how to build up a draft that well and have a great team and have a good amount of cap space
With that # of picks they can move up in the draft, also in order to make room for some of these players, they'll be getting rid of good players. |

Nobody was going to pony up a 2nd rounder for Smith. It was much like us giving up a 4th to the Jags for Brunell when they were going to cut him anyway. No way the 49ers keep a backup with that type of cap and salary. It wasn't a question of if they were going to cut him, but when. Andy Reid already starting his tenure out in KC as a colossal failure. One of the worst trades I've seen in quite some time. |

There's actually a good chance that Percy Harvin and Darrelle Revis could both be on the 49ers next year.
Whether they get one of those guys or both, they're my pick to win the Super Bowl next year over Denver. |

Did you see what Brady, flacco and Ryan did to their secondary? Culliver showed that besides his hate of gays, he isn't a good nickleback. As for money I believe San Fran has $15 million in space. More now that Alex smith is gone. |

The alternative is waiting until he gets cut, then have someone else pick him up and you are left with the bottom of the barrel in FA or the draft since no one in the draft this year is projected as a Luck or Griffen III. HOWEVER, look what the Skins did, skipped over QB in the draft when they didn't like what they saw and waited a year. Even with Beck/Rexy suckiness. And it has paid off hasn't it??? |

You might want to wait until they play a few games before you call it a "colossal failure!" lol. What were the alternatives? Brady Quinn? Matt Cassell? A 2nd rounder for Smith seems about right. Yeah he was probably going to get cut but then that puts him on the open market. Smith was playing his best ball when he was benched. If Reid can tone things down in the passing game then I think it's good move for KC. If he doesn't then it's a bad trade. |

Really? Smith was gonna be the most coveted free agent QB when released so this eliminates the competition. The QB crop in the draft this year is bad. Third round pick is probably a more fair value, I guess the thinking is why compete with the others when Smith is the best QB available n the draft and free agency, pay the higher price. I really dont think KC is that far away in that division, actually believe the talent in KC is better now than Philly by a good margin. Its mos def more well rounded and properly built. When you look at missing parts in KC, it was no discussion, QB by far and away is(was) their biggest problem. Id wouldnt be surprised if Reid trades back now and just acquires another pick with similar value. |
Re: Around the NFL Off - Season style.
Who knows what other offers teams may have had on the table for Smith. There's not many viable options out there, and add in the fact it seems like a kinda meh QB draft class and I don't think a 2nd rounder for an established veteran QB is that crazy at all. Smith is better than some give him credit for.

I guess no one can give a man credit for making it to the NFC Championship last year. I mean, everyone can do that, right? It's easy, right?? |

All so true. |
Re: Around the NFL Off - Season style.
From Rotoworld:
Giants re-signed LT Will Beatty to a five-year, $38.75 million contract. The deal includes a $12.5 million signing bonus, and $19 million guaranteed. It's a nice haul for a player who finally stayed healthy last season after missing 14 combined games between 2010-11. Three days shy of his 28th birthday, Beatty allowed just three sacks and 22 hurries in 967 snaps last season. He was never expected to reach free agency. With Beatty locked up for $7.75 million annually, Branden Albert and Jake Long will both target at least $8 million a year. |

Yeah but when people say sanchez did that, most don't give him credit either they say it was because of the defense. Same with Grossman |

Establish veteran? If he was a established veteran, he wouldn't have lost his starting spot due to a injury. Nothing about his career screams established beyond the playoff run in 2011. In fact, the ONLY reason he's still around is due to his lofty status as the #1 pick and the amount of money they poured into him. Had he been a 6th round slot, he would have been replaced long ago. Mind you, I don't think Smith was the sole reason for his failures. It mostly had to due with his surroundings and changing coaches every year. Still, you are expected to produce in this league. "No excuses" is the phrase I hear all too often.
I guess no one can give a man credit for making it to the NFC Championship last year. I mean, everyone can do that, right? Cardinals? Chiefs? (can't add Jets due to their salary cap) I simply don't think the demand is out there enough to warrant a 2nd rounder. Also, not many teams pursued him when he was a free agent last off-season. |

But I do agree the Chiefs gave up too much. But in the end Alex Smith is still better than what the Chiefs had at the time. I also think Alex Smith can start. He can win you games, he played well when that 49ers defense did not play well against the Saints in the playoffs. He will bring the Chiefs 6-8 more wins just because of the division they play in and the talent on the Chiefs. |

its more than 3 teams. Cardinals were extremely interested, all its takes is one team to grab him.

A 28 year old QB with 75 starts under his belt, the last 2 seasons with a QB rating over 90, led his team to the NFC Championship in 2011, 81-63 TD to INT ratio, who else out there that was available is any better?? He lost his job because Kap was handpicked by Harbaugh and has the higher upside. He certainly didn't lose it to performance, he was one of the highest rated QBs in the league when he got hurt. Say what you will about Reid has a head coach, but the guy knows QBs and he knows how to coach one up. I could see Smith playing really well for him in that offense. |
Re: Around the NFL Off - Season style.
alex smith is 100% worth a 2nd rounder if your team doesn't have a QB worth an ish.
the draft class looks bad at QB with no immediate impact players (and yes, you can always get lucky, but do you want to take a 5% chance of success with your job on the line?). the KC team has talent (pro bowlers et al), so it'd be nice if they could guarantee competent quarterbacking for a roster that's not as bad as it looked last year. |

I'm in agreement with you on this point. I definitely could see Smith playing well in that offense. I simply think they overpaid for him when they needed it to upgrade some of that talent on the team. I think the Chiefs had the most attractive offer out there out of all the teams wanting his services. |

And who would the find to replace Flacco? Flacco just had a Montana post season. Ravens will franchise tag him. They hope he has an ok 25TD 15INT type season so his price tag will drop. A lot of things will change in a year. |

Anybody saying they'd take Flacco over Eli is either high as **** or they've bumped their head recently. It's not even close.
