Brady Law Has Done Little To Keep Guns Out Of Criminals' Hands - IBD

The description by the Capitol newspaper The Hill was typical: "The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, which took effect 20 years ago Friday, has blocked more than 2 million firearm sales, preventing 'countless' killings and other crimes, gun control advocates said at an event to mark the anniversary ... ."

On Friday, the Brady Campaign claimed that half those blocked from purchasing a gun — over 1 million — were felons.

Impressive numbers. But, alas, both are gross exaggerations.

In reality, the "Brady Checks" are quite ineffective in stopping criminals from getting guns. There are actually very few hard-core criminals that are stupid enough to even try to buy a gun from a dealer that does a background check.

The media don't understand what they are reporting. Getting denied by a Brady check is not the same thing as saying that the person is a prohibited person. The correct terminology here is that there have been more than 2 million "initial denials."

Take the numbers from 2010, the last year the full National Instant Criminal Background Check System report was produced (the Obama administration has stopped releasing this detailed report).

So let us look at these numbers, a relatively typical year. Out of the 76,142 initial denials in the federal system only 44 individuals were prosecuted and only 13 were convicted of illegally trying to purchase a gun when they were prohibited from doing so.

As if that wasn't bad enough, those convicted were hardly what one would call dangerous criminals — usually people with relatively trivial records from years earlier that didn't realize their offense was covered.

Responding to a recent report that Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America (MDA) and Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG) conducted about the dangers of guns in public schools, Northeastern University criminologist James Alan Fox said the annual risk of gun-related death in school is "well below one in two million," and "many times more youngsters are killed annually in bicycle accidents."

Of all the stupid annoying crap you post the top one has to be the most irrelevant one yet. Cops killed by guns is going to be an extremely low number. First most of the time when they pull someone over they know who that person is or may be. They know the uniform can make them a target and are aware of their surroundings through necessity and training. Most of the time when going after a known dangerous person the cops have numbers on their side. Also cops are always armed, most are expert marksmen, and constantly practice shooting. 2013 cops killed by gunfire 33. An extremely low number more people died jumping off the Golden Gate bridge (46) in 2013. So you can pick almost any other means of death and that will be higher than cops killed in the line of duty. Nationwide Children's Hospital
says choking is the leading cause of death for young children, we would save more preschoolers by wiring their jaws shut and I.V. feeding them than removing every single gun from the USA.

There's the problem with the anti-gun crowd. You feel that you, or at least the Government has the authority to judge who has the "right" and who should be denied their Constitutional rights and it doesn't end at the 2nd Amendment, you can so casually deny the 1st Amendment right to those you do not agree with. Don't agree? I bet you'd shut down every Tea Party rally in a second if you could. You spewed some hatred about them earlier actually.

Fact was that Zimmerman was assaulted and he defended himself. Was he a completely, 100% sane person? Who knows except God. He saw a young thug peeking into windows and tried to help his neighbors. Should he have left it up to the cops? Yes, probably, but you do not know him well enough to say that the Constitution doesn't apply to him. There was a big effort by the media and the President himself to paint Zimmerman, who was also a victim of a crime as a madman just because they were able to politically capitalize on the death of a black kid. Besides, if the President had a son, he's look like Travon, but he wouldn't be allowed to play football. I heard the President STILL using that kid's name last week in a speech.

Should we try to prevent legitimate mentally-ill people from having firearms, absolutely! That's the Sandy Hook shooter right there, he was mental...not an NRA member like Giantone likes to pretend. But, we do not want the Government ever being the judge and jury on illness, ask Jews in Germany how that power ends up.

Next time your head is being slammed into the concrete sidewalk by a 6-foot tall teenager in a hoodie who is taller than you are, I hope you have the chance to defend yourself too.
wow , nice try on the spin .WHY where guns available for kids to commit suicide and where did you get the numbers that they were a suicide ?
Sigh, why don't you stop trying to spin things. Your spin is the reason for your massive disconnect between what people have told you, and your responses.

I said you cite sources that count teenaged gangbangers as "children", and that a lot of gun deaths are suicides. What I guess I have to spell out for you, is that in counting all gun deaths without thought, you count suicides which would probably have happened even if guns didn't exist. But that would require critical thinking, like questioning the "children" numbers.

Read post #437. And realize RR and I were responding to your last post at the time #435. At least stop trying to spin things to put words in people's mouths.

Another recent example of your disconnect with what people are saying: Read post #796 in the Pics For Sharing & Debating thread. Try to follow arguments while debating.

Thank God ,you prove my point .What I'm trying to point out and either you are ignoring it or chose to spin it yourself is that the guns deaths that were suicides ,these kids should not have be able to get to guns .Like it or not just because you call someone a "gang banger" doesn't me there aren't children some are 12 and 13.Seems you and Rat don't like something so there for it is wrong or doesn't exist, you are so pro gun you're blind to simple gun safety, laws people want no one is taking you guns so you can take that cry and cram it .

New York passes nation's toughest gun control law | NJ.com

York state enacted the nation's toughest gun restrictions today and the first since the Connecticut school massacre, including an expanded assault-weapon ban and background checks for buying ammunition.
Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the measure into law less than an hour after it won final passage in the Legislature, with supporters hailing it as a model for the nation and gun-rights activists condemning it as a knee-jerk piece of legislation that won't make anyone safer and is too extreme to win support in the rest of the country.
"Common sense can win," Cuomo said. "You can overpower the extremists with intelligence and with reason and with common sense."

A department of feminist studies professor has been accused of going berserk after coming across a campus prolife demonstration that used extremely graphic displays, leading a small mob of students to chant “tear down the sign” before grabbing one of the signs, storming off with it, then allegedly engaging in an altercation with a 16-year-old prolife protestor who had followed the educator to retrieve it.

Much of the scuffle was recorded on a smartphone by the 16-year-old, Thrin Short. The yet-to-be-released video is now in the custody of Santa Barbara law enforcement officials, who are investigating the March 4 incident.

The professor at the heart of the controversy is Mireille Miller-Young, an associate professor whose area of emphasis is black cultural studies, pornography and sex work, according to her faculty webpage.

Ahhh, tolerance and diversity of thought are alive and well with the Left!

Seriously though, WHY are those studies even available at colleges? No wonder so many come out of college with formal educations but no employable skillsets.

Feminist & Queer Theory?
Pornography?
Sex Work?
Black Film?
African American & African Diaspora Studies?
Pop Culture and Art?
Oral History? Don't even want a course description there...

That's definitely worth $200,000 in debt.

There definitely needs to be a warning label on his posts cautioning against possible headaches and confusion.
Oh, and one more thing.
(snip) no one is taking you guns so you can take that cry and cram it .
Explain your post here.

In a previous thread, you cheered passage of a law that bans some guns, so-called assault weapons and guns with "large capacity" magazines. And now you lie claiming that nobody's trying to take guns away.

That's me correcting you, G1. On people taking guns away, and on your own dishonesty. Whether you accept this rebuke or not.

HTTR, have a nice day.

edit: Yeah, CRedskinsRule, you're right. Ironically, he's got kind of a disclaimer in his sig, though I have a hard time believing he put it there himself. Unless that's even more dishonesty and deflection on his part, lol.
I am convinced that G1 struggles with basic reading comprehension skills. He often talks himself in circles, and misquotes or misrepresents quotes from others, sometimes in the same paragraph! There definitely needs to be a warning label on his posts cautioning against possible headaches and confusion. I just wonder if there should be a law that you have to wait an hour to drive after reading his posts.
Product of the New Jersey Teachers Union. Not his fault...just his parents' fault for voting the bums in who educated him. :D

Scored a raincheck on a tough-to-find caliber from Gander Mountain.

They had a weekend sale and since the truck never came, they handed out rainchecks and I got one!

Seriously considering buying a 40 S&W or 45ACP firearm since those calibers are ALWAYS in stock on the ammo shelves. When I do find mine, there are never hollow points either, just range grade.
