Re: Around the NFL 2013 Offseason (Episode 99)

I have seen that 2 win argument all to much. Look at it this way. We signed Garcon to be our number 1, who was a number 2 on that 2 win team. He was injured for half the season and played the other half still injured. So RG3 had, at best, a number 3 receiver from that 2 win team as his best receiver for half the season, and an injured number 2 for the other half from that 2 win team. Once Fred went down with his achilles, no one should say that we had better TE's than that 2 win team.

If that 2 win argument holds water, then it was amateur hour for our receivers last year. Yet that is never taken into consideration when judging RG3 versus Luck. The only reason I take Garcon over Wayne now is the 7 or 8 year age difference between them. Reggie Wayne is an elite receiver imo, but probably wont be for much longer.

If i had to choose QB's for a team, I would choose Rex/Beck over the QB's from Indy when they won 2 games. The geriatric coming out of retirement Kerry Collins or the inept Curtis Painter. Even Sanchez looks like a superstar compared to those 2.

Re: Around the NFL 2013 Offseason (Episode 99)

It's easy to call them a two win team without Luck when you forget they had a HOF qb with no capable backup that was out for the year. I think that year really showed how much Manning meant to the Colts, he carried that team for all those years and they never stood a chance when he had to sit out. But if they had a good backup plan in place I doubt they would only have won 2 games that year. Luck went to a good team, but that shouldn't take away any credit from Luck. Personally I think both Luck and RG3 are top notch talents, and I'm just happy to have one of them.
They weren't a 2 win team the year before with even average qb play.

Separately, why is completion % over-rated? I get that if you are just completing short passes, then the higher number is expected, but certainly, if you take these numbers:

Comp% 65.6 Romo
Yds 4,903
TD 28
INT 19
Rating 90.5

54.1 Luck
4,374
23
18
76.5

56.7 Sanchez
3,474
26
18
78.2

65.6 Griffen
3,200
20
5
102.4

And pulled the exceptional qb out, it wouldn't be Luck's. The passers names are in white font by the completion %
Take a guy like Joe Flacco. He's never going to be a 67%-68% passer. Pretty good qb....right? Then you have a guy like Jason Campbell who had a high completion % but was the definition of average. I would never judge a qb with that stat. I look more for intangibles, pass per attempt, 3rd down conversions and td's vs int's.

That's a really important stat. RG3 excelled in that regard last season with an astounding 1 pass-per-attempt. Meanwhile, Jake Locker floundered, averaging just 1 pass-per-attempt; he's going to have to improve in that area.

Interesting that Griffin smoked everyone last year with 8.14 yards per attempt, nobody else was over 8, Luck was only 6.98. And of course he had that ridiculous 20-5 TD/INT mark.

Colts were not a legit 2 win team that year. They had no one at QB. No one. They were an 6-7 win team with decent QBing. Indy won a lot of games last that they maybe shouldn't have. They're a good bet to only win 6-7 game this year. Check out Bill Barnwell's stuff over at Grantland. He tried to make an argument that Indy wasn't gong to regress and basically couldn't. The stats for Indy last year were horrendous for an 11 win team. Miraculous really.

and the 8 other TDs he had (7 running, 1 fumble) to 2 lost fumbles.

so he's 28/7 TDs/TOs as a QB. that's insane.

I think Vick really has a bounce back year if he can stay healthy. He's in the perfect offense for him. No way could they go with Foles. Only concern with Vick is he'll probably be hurt by mid season cause he's never learned to slide.

He still hasn't learned to slide. Was diving the other night against the Panthers. It won't be long before Foles is in the starting lineup.

I just don't buy Vick in any offense that is based on quick/correct decision making by the QB. He has never demonstrated an aptitude for it and, while looking good in preseason is fine, I trust Vick to return to his time-worn habits when the defensive scheming starts. If he can't create the offense, he won't be able to run the offense.

Re: Around the NFL 2013 Offseason (Episode 99)

The thing I worry about Philly is that Reid never understood what a good back can mean to an offense. Kelly will use Shady to take pressure off of Vick. Vick and Shady in a read option is a bit scary as long as Vick gets the quick reads down. If Vick figures out how to pass like the one season he did well at it, that could be a real good offense.

Evilgrin 08-20-2013 04:50 PM

Re: Around the NFL 2013 Offseason (Episode 99)

Vick always starts out good, (just like the Cowboys). Then things start to head south after the first month. I think we are in for a really tough first game though. If they have a bad set of quick downs, that defense could be on the field alot. Possibly the worst defense in the NFL.

Also, they are counting on 3 guys over 30 recovering from serious injuries on the offensive line.

I think they will do stuff similar to what we did, run a lot of read option, mis direction stuff, run play action off of it to give Vick half the field type reads. I think he's in an offense that's perfect for him. Plus they get back Jason Peters and that will help a ton. They're going to score points.

So with every team gearing up for the 3rd preseason game, which is suppose to look more like a regular season dress rehersal, the Bills @ Redskins starting units will most likely feature Kevin Kobb vs Rex Grossman........ I think I'll mow my yard Saturday afternoon.

At this point I am so ready for the Regular Season. The skins and everyone else, just seems to be getting guys hurt.

This is a joke. 21,000 for a player who wrapped up, and tried to lead with his shoulder. The other hits they fine for I'm OK with, but to fine a player who wrapped up and made a tackle on a receiver who obviously was not "defenseless" and turned up field is a joke.

If I were a smallish corner in the NFL, I would not know how to tackle. I mean if you are a big strong LB, you can go in heads up wrap and overpower a guy and drop him, but a small Corner has to go low and take out a guys legs to bring him down. If you go high, you will get over powered and/or get a helmet to helmet hit, which equals a fine. Not to mention the whole thing happens so fast its like trying to plan on which part of a car you want to hit in a car wreck going 60 miles per hour. I mean seriously, if Arian Peterson or Steven Jackson was coming at you, how would you attempt to tackle him?

I think this is a pretty serious indictment of where Foles is in his development, because there's no upside whatsoever to the Eagles going with Vick at QB.

The speed of Kelly's offense should cover up a lot of Vick's past mistakes, but it would have done the same for any QB, and you'd have to think that if Foles could have gotten the most out of their stars (McCoy, Jackson, Celek), he'd be in there.

Philly's defense is an absolute disaster, and it's struggles are about to be compounded by how quickly their offense gets up and down the field.
