I don't know anything about him prior to being with the Gints. He's a good prospect though for sure. Would be a little nervous given that teams issues right now. I like the idea of Lovie because he always knows how to build a defense. Saw stats on his defense with the bears and it's just amazing. And he's a disciplinarian type, something this team needs badly. |
Re: Redskins Lions postgame
If we lose to Oakland or Dallas, do we part ways with Haslett by the time he enters the locker room?
We obviously are going to rebuild the team. What would it matter to axe him since the season is over b/c we aren't going 12-4 or 11-5? This sucks. It has to be decided who's in who's out. Losing Mike shanahan would add to the years left of agony. It has to start with Haslett, but honestly Kyle isn't trustworthy to me b/c his success is based nothing on his abilities. More horrifying is that if mike really cared about winning something more would have bbeen done. How do you ever bring your son to work day in the nfl and claim your in it to win it? |

I know. Though I bet Lovie would work with just about anyone the FO chose for OC and probably give that person a lot leeway. This is a scenario where I'd give Kyle another year in the org. |
Re: Redskins Lions postgame
Watching the Bears last night reminded me of how I would hype up Marc Trestman to other fans. Its too bad he isn't a coaching candidate. Offensive genius, that would have put RG3 and Morris in a very balanced offense that can succeed.
People still don't get it that changing to a 4-3 defense fixes 0 NOTHING ZILCH ZIP NADA. The 3-4 is a better defense in the league anyway because it gives you more flexibility and options blitzing. The reason our defense sucks has nothing to do with the scheme. It has to do with not being able to tackle. We could have 12 guys on the field, it still wouldn't make us better because we can't tackle. Another problem with our defense is that we don't line up in our base defense often. How many times this year have we lined up with 3 DLineman, 4 LBs and 4 DBs? Not much, we play to our opponent as opposed to our opponent playing to us. If you watch how the Steelers (whom we base our defense off of) defense plays, it will line up more in base causing offenses to adjust to it. When Pittsburgh won the super bowl a few years ago, I remember their defense being so dominate that offenses would play to it with its personnel, audibles, protection. When the Redskins play, teams say "oh they have 6 DBs on the field, they suck, lets throw it to ______, because they can't stop him." As far as solutions go. I would fire Haslett at the Bye, give Raheem the DC duties to see how our defense responds after 12 games. If Raheem isn't good, fire him get Rex Ryan or hire Kevin Greene from GB (I think he'll be good), if neither of them come, typically the LB coach from a good 3-4 Defense are the best 3-4 DC candidates (Ron Rivera could also be a candidate). I would also tell Mike to retire. Go young, get Kyle to coach. If Mike doesn't retire, let Kyle hopefully walk away with a Head Coaching position elsewhere so it doesn't look like we 'fired' him should he decided to come back and coach us one day in the future (I'm referring to a Gregg Williams bad break up; keep that from occurring with Kyle). And now that we have cap money next year, I'm offering Orakpo a $6 million a year deal as a take it or leave it kind of deal. I'm giving Trent Williams a new contract extension. I'm also going hard after Jarius Byrd and Aqib Talib. We need a safety and a CB badly. Those guys can flip around our secondary from bottom of the league to middle of the pack at the worst. Then I'm drafting MLB's, RTs, and pass rushers all throughout the draft. Already looking forward to next year folks |
Re: Redskins Lions postgame
All this talk about firing Mike and Kyle makes my head hurt.. It's like Week 8-10 last year all over again.. Some of you guys are so see-saw it's ridiculous.
|
Re: Redskins Lions postgame
I would like to see a defense change at the Bye though. I'm not one to take on coaching changes lightly, but we are on pace to give up 8,000+ yards this year and this is the second game in a row that the offensive players on the other team said they had no worries about our defensive scheme, and we couldn't adjust.

Re: Redskins Lions postgame
I can't understand why we have inexplicably abandoned the read option. Is it so much to do with Griffin being on a bad leg, or is it just two different philosophies between Mike and Kyle? I would hope they would go back to what made them successful last season.
We might be 0-4 coming out of the bye and at that point, i think it would be good to fire Haslett. The defense cannot get any worse, as others have pointed out... |

I think he was mentioned originally as a replacement to haz not to Shanny though Edit: just saw goats question as to him being hc. Most of the talk was him being a dc though- which i am all for. As for a hc i agree with you, although depending on who would be his oc it might work? Edit: this is all just conjecture based on the possibility of us finishing3-13 or somethinglike that. Im not calling for in season change |

I completely agree with you. There's nothing to REBUILD...we've been building and 3 weeks does not make a whole season. To start "rebuilding" would be tearing down a VERY solid team. You don't blow things up because of a short-term losing streak. Did we hold a fire sale and clean out the coaching staff when we were 3-6 last season? This team is NOT this bad. We're in a tough situation transitioning Griffin back into games but the defense is the real problem. On paper we're talented and deep, so maybe Haslett is the culprit or replacing him might motivate the D, but the players we've put together are not the problem, it's their execution for some unknown reason. |

Re: Redskins Lions postgame
IMO Until Gryphon gets fully back in the groove and can beat folks with both legs and arm, defenses will keep stacking the LOS to stop Morris. In such situations the read option becomes just a play action pass.
One of these weeks a defense is going to stack the LOS, only to find that RGIII is back in the groove. On that day RGIII will have a monster game. |

That 21 yard scramble was pretty impressive though. I think the issue is that Robert's initial "take off" is slow, but once he gets into second gear, he's just as deadly with his legs as he was last year. In retrospect, I'm thinking that regardless of III's health, it was/is the plan of the Shannys to reduce the amount of read option this year, because they want Griffin to continue developing as a true NFL passing quarterback. Eventually, I see this paying off for Griffin down the road. Griffin is not always going to be a dangerous runner, so he's going to have to develop his drop back passing skills and improve on those mechanics. |
Re: Redskins Lions postgame
Hopefully we can get the ground game cranking soon. I'd love to see Morris with 20-25 carries and Helu with a few too. That would go a long way in helping the D too. The less they're on the field the better.

One thing that Gibbs I learned about his team: They could score points and looked explosive, but they couldn't win ball games. Once the offensive philosophy was changed in favor of a more ball controlled offense, they started winning. I think the best defense the Redskins have right now is a heavy dose of Alfred Morris. |

If you meant read option you are correct. Trading away 3 first rounders to make RG3 a 100 % drop back passer is absurd. The read option was made for RG3 and they better get back to it or watch this thing get real ugly. |

Re: Redskins Lions postgame
I feel like the problems on offense go well beyond RG making a few big mistakes. The line really has done a poor job blocking across the board. It's still questionable whether Mikes style of smaller, quicker lineman can work against today's defenses. Play-calling is still a problem. It's better than pre RG days where defenses knew Kyles plays about half the time, but it's still bad enough you see missed opportunities. I guess what I'm saying is there's as many reasons to be as frustrated with the offense overall as with the defense given the talent level of each unit. Offense has more talent to work with than defense.

We're not talking about abandoning his running abilities, we're just developing the pocket passing while he physically comes back from this injury. He obviously should be and maybe can not be the runner he was in 2012, so using this time period to protect him while also developing and improving another part of his game will be beneficial in the long run. He'll return to his 2012 form, but you can't expect it 8 months after surgery without taking a single live snap even in a preseason game. He's healthy enough to be out there, but no player could completely take that much time off from football activities without needing some time to get timing and the mental part of the game back. He's throwing the ball very well with the exception of a few bad interceptions. On offense, it appears right now we're playing with the future, long-term goals of the team in mind rather than going all-out to win every week. Frustrating to watch but it will pay off when Robert is completely "back". Look how awful Michael Vick has been trying to be a passing QB to extend his career. He has some highlights because Reid and Kelly go for big plays boom or bust, but he's been an inaccurate turnover machine when you look at the big picture. Robert will be miles ahead of him when that point comes in his career and this team will be better off because of it. So now, we just have to watch and wait. If Griffin was not injured, there's no way he'd be attempting 50 passes in a game, EVER. But, we're in a unique spot where we have a running QB that we want to protect while he re-acquaints himself with the game. He's been effective as a pocket passer and he's improving every week and more importantly, with every week, his knee is getting stronger and stronger without injuring it again. He showed he can still take off and run. We'll see more and more of that as the season progresses. We may not call as many designed QB runs and it would probably be smart not to, but he'll still find his running lanes and turn losses into big gains out of no where. Just practice sliding, Robert! |
Re: Redskins Lions postgame
Eh, not likely. Some here know I've been thinking this for a while. I don't think RG3, Mike and Kyle can effectively coexist much longer. One of the biggest misconceptions about Mike and Kyle is that they just agree on everything because they're father/son. And to be clear, it's just a football thing. They have different ideas. And their franchise QB is unfortunately stuck in the middle. RG3 and Mike aren't going anywhere anytime soon. Well, not RG3 at least. So the right thing would be for Kyle to go. Find his own path. I think, I know, he's earned a strong enough reputation around the league to do so. And, as I've said before here too, he's not a favorite of Bruce Allen. Not saying he doesn't like him. Just saying he's not guaranteed to be the next HC here, nor should he be
Going to put this here since this relationship was talked about here. It appears we have another situation where Snyder is involved in a personal relationship with his top player and it's causing some strife between coach, player and owner. Seems Schefter was on ESPN980 and talked about Shanny/RGIII and the Redskins. Schefter on RGIII and Snyder (the radio segment) ESPN 980 Audio Vault - Play Now
Do you think that maybe empowers Robert if there is a dispute, to feel that he can push his will?” “I think both of those statements are true,” Schefter said. “I think it complicates it, and I think it empowers Robert. Yes. I think both those things are true. Now, Dan Snyder is a different owner than a lot of other owners, so he doesn’t conduct his business the way that Pat Bowlen conducts his business or the way that some other people conduct their business. Dan has been a tremendously successful business man, so it’s hard to argue about what he’s done and the way he’s handled his business, to me. But, saying that, yes, I do think that that has empowered RGIII. Yes.”
I have no problem with Mike not wanting to be RGIII's friend. This is how it should be. He doesn't need to be Robert's "friend", he needs to be his coach. I am annoyed that Snyder is being RGIII's buddy. Dude needs to stay the **** away from players on a personnel level. We've seen this shit before with Clinton Portis and that fiasco. This shit will not end well. **** YOU SNYDER!!! edit: ....and confirmation of this: @HTTR24_7 @sugewhite94 @tottranet Kev is good.. Tell you one thing, Adam just nailed it in his interview. |

What are you talking about? Manning and Irsay definitely friends. Brady and Kraft absolutely friends. Ryan and Blank...yup? Is it some crime for an owner and player to be friends? Snyder is also friends with Bruce Allen. Spends time with Mike Shanahan and his family too. But back to the "issue". RG3 being empowered. Again, damn right he is. Look at the crap that happened with Clinton Portis. Ran to the owner to undermine his coach. We can't have that crap happening, and do you really trust Snyder not to meddle like before? |
