As he approaches, he ducks his head and slightly changes his angle. Had he not done both, he would have hit Smith dead on helmet to helmet.

EDIT: Given the angle of approach, it seems pretty clear to me he is [I]trying[/I] to get his shoulder in first.

Again, I think another player gets a pass but BM does not.

Edit: like JR said he obviously changes his angle. Tough to tell whether he thought he would avoid the helmet by doing so. Too bang bang in real time.
