With all that money they could probably bring in Rex Grossman.
Ultimately, Cousins wasn't impressed with the operation. He just wanted to play somewhere else. The only time he was ever open to resigning was after the 2015 season, but I can't say I blame McC and Allen for wanting to see more before committing.

After that point, Cousins was never again interested in negotiating a long term deal with us. Everything he said in interviews was lip service. Actions speak louder than words, and he never countered a single offer the Redskins made. That tells you all you need to know.

He. Didn't. Want. To. Be. A. Redskin.

Just say goodbye and move on.
I agree with all of this, and I still have a lot of conflicting emotions and frustrations about the whole situation.

On one hand, I am so fucking disappointed in Kirk. He had the talent to make this a really good franchise if he wanted to build something here, but ultimately he chose himself. I don't even mean that in a judgmental way, it's just a reality, and it's incredibly fucking disappointing as a fan. He was supposed to be the hero, the Phoenix that rose from the ashes of the RG3 cataclysm. Instead, for whatever reason, he couldn't stick it out and try to make this organization better; he instead kind of went on autopilot and focused on his own development and hurt the team while he waited it out. And in the meantime, instead of requesting a trade last year or making it clear he didn't want to be here, he played us all for a year making us think the FO didn't make a reasonable starting offer, only to say it want true after the season, (apparently off the record he said that at some point after the initial offer the Redskins were supposed to send an updated offer, but they sent him the same offer again). Either way, he didn't try to stay and make things work here and he ate up a ton of salary cap for two years and padded his stats (hyperbole perhaps) so he could get paid. I guess God told him last year, this isn't the right place, but get what you can out of them on your way out, Jesus loves capitalists. Maybe it was the right decision for him and his career, but as a fan, it's kind of a slap in the face. Good luck with the next coaching staff and FO, maybe everything will be just right for you so that you can have a peace, and then maybe your ass can step up and win when it counts. But I hope you don't. I really really hope you don't. Whatever team you're on next year is instantly right under the Cowboys for me.

On the other hand, what is it that drove this kid away? Is it a personality or philosophy mismatch? Organizational incompetence? Dysfunctional culture? I don't think it was just money or disagreement about what he's worth, it could be I guess, but there seems to be more to it than that.

I hope there is some inward reflection on that at Redskins Park. I wish they'd have an exit interview and try to at least consider his perspective on why it failed. I don't see them doing this, and it seems like arrogance to me. It's what you do if you think your employee was the problem and good riddance. IMO, even if it's just a bad fit or they are disruptive, it is better to understand why it happened. It's good data to know. The reports that they haven't spoken are concerning for a number of reasons, but I don't necessarily believe it. If it's true though, then it ain't just about philosophy. If it was just business, then you'd have to imagine they have him in before they part ways. We'll see...

Oh, and Alex Smith, I hope you like us buddy. We're a difficult fan base and media market, we're emotional and skeptical. Our FO can be insufferable, and the head coach is tough on QBs, but dude you got paid, this is your last shot at building a winner. I hope you can just put all the noise aside, embrace this franchise with all its flaws, and put your whole heart and soul into making the Redskins great again. We're just off of a bad breakup though, so give us time, but if you bring us success, you will be loved here, especially if you help also groom the future. Even if you never get past the second round of the playoffs, we will always love you if you leave a dynasty in your wake. HTTR.

On to Alex, this is worth a watch. Insight on who he is.

I really liked Kirks approach in the media at first, but ultimately got sick of his playing coy and caring too much about the noise, but his persona was very professional and calm. In these interviews, Smith reminds me of Cousins a lot in his demeanour which I like, and he's got a little more Fuck It to him as he says. There seems to be more maturity there IMO.

On a side note, he talks snit his best friend committing suicide. Maybe they need to get Luke Falk in to learn behind him. Luke lost his friend and fellow QB by suicide, that could be such a strong bond that will take the awkwardness out of the situation and must've they could build something special. Also, I like Falk, but he probably needs 2-3 yrs to develop into a viable option. Really could be a perfect situation.
Can I throw out a different (slightly) take on this.

How many Skins fans remember letting Brad Johnson go at age 32, then he went to Tampa Bay and at age 34, won the Superbowl.

I am not guaranteeing AS will win a SB with us, but I think we have the opportunity to be on the right side of that type of transaction this time, and with the rules that protect QB's we have every reason to expect that AS can play for most if not all of his extension.
Sure. Just give him a defense that was a dominant as Kiffens 'Tampa 2' that season.

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
Not sure I agree.

Just saying, Smith got guaranteed money from Washington at around 71 million over 4 years. What makes more sense? 71 million guaranteed (in 2015) for a 20-something who has surpassed 4,000 yards each season as a starter? Or 71 million guaranteed for a 34 year old starter who has surpassed 4,000 yards only once in 12 years?

Cousins is your franchise leader in passing yards in a single season. If you check the passing leaders by year for the Redskins history, you will see that 3 of the top 5 seasons (1,2 and 4) are held by Cousins.

How does the team NOT extend this guy?
So you’re saying KC should have gotten $23.5M with $71M guaranteed 2 years ago? Really? We would have crucified the FO for spending crazy money...

I am saying if you are going to spend that money on a 34 year old, you should be thrilled to spend that same money 2 years ago on a 27 year old, that has a better rating, more yards and more left in the tank than a guy 5 years his senior.

In 2016 Andrew Luck got a deal that was worth 140 million (80 guaranteed). Are you telling me that Cousins was NOT worth half of that in 2015 or 2016?

I really don't have an issue with the Alex Smith for Kirk Cousins swap. I knew long ago that Cousins wasn't signing here based on his (and his fathers) words and actions. It doesn't take a genius to read between the lines. Like what was mentioned prior, we can now expect less turnovers from Smith than we saw with Cousins (fumbles and INTs) Maybe that's the difference in some of the games? I just think they gave a bit too much for him but it is what it is. If we get that 3rd rounder back from Cousins departure, it'll soften the blow of losing Fuller.

My only worry with Alex Smith is that he has a 66 QB rating when under pressure. Yikes that's terrible.

Kirk is better against the pressure in the pocket but Smith is better rolling out and finding space. Both are great on PA PASSING, Smith has a better deep ball. To me its a great move for 3 years, he'll be 37 and done by then most likely, Kirk will go on to Denver and see the grass aint always greener

I believe Alex Smith’s contract is about $71M guaranteed. That’s a lot more than half of $80M. And no, he wasn’t worth anywhere near AL money at that point. If you continue to say that we should have written this contract for KC two years ago I will respectfully continue to disagree. As I said earlier, hindsight is a wonderful thing...

In 2019 or 2020 Smith could be on the bench or not starting. It will be the same thing all over again in SF and KC. We'll draft a young QB and after winning 6-9 games w/Smith the fan base will grow impatient and want to see the young guy. Meanwhile Fuller will be in the prime of his career.

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith

Here’s my take on another forum about what to look out for next:

So apparently the compensatory pick situation is a bit nebulous and will be decided by the league after next season based on whether we gained, lost or broke even in FA according to the NFLs secret in-house formula. If we lose Cousins (done deal) and Breeland (I’m hoping) we’re already starting with a huge net loss since our replacement @ QB was via trade (yet another reason to like the move). If the Redskins can be somewhat frugal - because I’m obviously not expecting them to sit out entirely, nor should they - we should definitely have a compensatory pick or two coming our way in 2019.

The NFL has proven over and over that handing out large contracts to other teams stars en masse is a losing proposition. The Redskins are the poster boys for how poorly that strategy works out. The Giants are a great recent example. Apparently a lot of teams have changed the way they operate because of the compensatory rules.

I really think that our handling of FA will be telling. If the Redskins are getting smarter and understand this important change as well as the fact that massive FA spending doesn’t lead to success, I think it will be a great signal that we actually might be heading in the right direction. If they look at the cap space gained from letting Cousins walk and signing Smith for less and go, “Yippy skippy! Now we can splurge on FA!”, I think it’ll be a strong indication that they refuse to learn the lesson and Cousins, Smith etc is very much sound and fury signifying nothing...

If the Redskins manage to make savvy adds while not breaking the bank and forfitting their comp picks, while simultaneously trading down and acquiring more draft capital, I’ll be much more hopeful for the future.

13OA is a really good spot to be in this year because there are 5 potential 1rd QBs. Either they all go before 13 and make it so we have better options to chose from at other positions, or one of the big name guys falls to us and sets us up to trade down for a significant return.

Now that Smith is in the fold we need to address the significant holes throughout the roster. If they take an intelligent 2 year approach via FA and the draft they can upgrade 7-10 spots while maintaining salary balance - all while having continuity at head coach and competence at the game’s most important position.

The road to respectability is clear as day to me. After 3 years of playing .500 football, perhaps the path to something even better is right around the corner.

Redskin Warrior 02-01-2018 09:36 PM

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith

I rarely post but I wanted to offer a possible scenario that I haven't seen posted yet. We have the 13th pick in the draft and Alex Smith is now off the market that pick could be huge. I hated to see Fuller leave too, but what if we trade back an added a 2nd round pick or more. Someone will miss out on a QB in FA and need to draft a QB. Don't look at the trade (it's over with there's no use in crying about it now) look the ripple effect of the trade.

Example what if they trade back and get an additional 2nd & 4th round pick for the 13th pick (or possibly more) while being able to resign a stud like Zach Brown. Is that really that bad? Fuller will be missed for sure but it's not the end of the world. The extra pick or picks could help boost the holes in the roster. I feel we could come out okay under the circumstances given honestly, if the FO makes these type of moves in the future. You never know what might happen, but I feel good about having the 13th pick as potential trade bait. No one saw Jonathan Allen being there last year....but what if Mayfield or Josh Allen is there this year?

If Gruden is gone the new coach can draft his qb and groom him while AS runs the offense.

But I think with a little health and a good (doesn't have to be great) off season this team will be at least a wildcard team and maybe better. Until the team's December collapse we were in the mix and I think AS wins a few of the games that KC bungled. Mainly the Saints and Cowboys games.

I don't see the negativity. With a settled QB and a good off season this team should be a few wins better.

I think the FO gave KC a chance to take a mediocre team and lift them to contender. He couldn't do it. I do not think AS is an improvement just different skill sets. I do know that if he is going to lift the skins above mediocrity that he will need better skill players around him. I like CT and hope he returns to old form b/c that will be a great weapon. I am done with the hopes of Jordan Reed being a weapon. He has played fewer games every season for the last three season and fewer snap percentage every season for the last three. At this juncture that is a trend. The FO has some work to do, I hope they do it.

Jay will have to formulate game plans for a far more conservative QB than KC. I hope he can do that but have reservations.

I will wait to make a prediction on playoff wins until I see the team being built. As it stands now I would say we won't win more but we can't win less than we did with KC.
