Defensive lineman Terrell McClain's base salary of $3.25 million was set to become fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the league year, but the language of his contract was changed to keep it as guaranteed for injury only. That means if the Redskins
I was wondering why McClain hasn't been cut by the 5th day of league year. Eric Shaffer knows what he is doing. |
Re: Redskins free agent signings 2018
Concerning Hankins, it seems to me that we have criticized the FO for years because they had no plan. That criticism was fair because they actually didn't have a plan. Now, I think we may be unintentionally criticizing this FO for having a plan and sticking to it because they didn't pay Hankins whatever he wanted to come here. That isn't fair criticism, IMHO.
We don't know what happened in the negotiations with Hankins. The Skins may have made him a more than fair offer within the parameters of their overall plan. Right now, Hankins may want to look around to see if he can get a better offer. There's no telling if he'll find a better offer or if the Skins might sweeten the pot a little to get the deal done. Either way, I support the FO for having a plan and working it. |
I'm not concerned about the Scandrick signing at all. That's because the Skins have earned my trust when it comes to building the secondary. The Skins have done an excellent job of identifying players for the secondary and then signing them as FA's, or drafting them. They know what they're getting with Scandrick and they will use him in a way that plays to his strengths as a player. We also have an outstanding DB coach, IMO.
Agreed... but we did sign Donte Whiffner pretty recently...
The reason I'm not too concerned is we still have enough cap space to make a real impact full signing. |
Re: Redskins free agent signings 2018
I love this new process, don't be in a rush to sign every player that comes to town, back in the day all we heard was how Dan and Co. had their guy in and won't let him leave w/out a deal. We are looking more like the Steelers or Packers this O/S.

Envoyé de mon SM-J320FN en utilisant Tapatalk
If Scandrick doesn't work out, I expect one of our Young Guns to step up. Scandrick may have been signed to hold down the slot corner position until one of the younger players is ready. |

The difference from 2 years ago to last year was inspiring. He took a fractured group, and even with injuries across the board, built a consistent defensive backfield. That's a good point as it relates to Scandrick, and I hadn't really considered it. Thanks for reminding us :food-smil |

Assuming they do that, it puts less urgency in the signing of Hankins. |

I sure hope so, even if they sign Hankins. By adding Hankins and a top-notch rookie DL we could have a bad-ass D-Line rotation. |
Re: Redskins free agent signings 2018
I really, really want Johnathan Hankins. I am Googling "Redskins Hankins" just about every 10 minutes hoping for news.
But that said, the fact that Hankins left to ponder his options is a good thing. It's a sign that the Redskins aren't coming at free agents with offers that blow away the market, causing them to take the deal on the spot. That was the model in the 2000s and it resulted in some horrendous overpayments and we all know the history. I happen to think that if you see guys sign during their free agent visit, it's probably not a good sign. The fact that Scandrick signed yesterday during the visit was a sign of overpayment - his offer was so good that he said 'know what it's not even worth taking other visits.' And now that we all see it's 2 years and $10M, we're all scratching our heads a bit. Remember, DeSean Jackson left Redskins Park after his visit. But he signed with us (and the price was right). We should hope for that with Hankins. Just because he left doesn't mean we're not still the best offer. If Hankins gets away from us, that will cheese me for sure because we really NEED his skill set. But I can't fault Bruce Allen for making offers in line with the market. We'll see if he lets this fish get away - paying a little more than market value would be worth it in this case, because our need is so much bigger than most teams. If he takes another visit, if I'm Bruce I'm bringing my last best and final offer right then and there over the phone. |

He's freshly released, we can assume his agent may have told him not to sign the first offer made and wait to see if there's a market for him. Marketwise I like the fact that neither Poe nor Richardson signed crazy deals and Logan hasn't signed anything yet. I still think Hankins can end up here. |
Re: Redskins free agent signings 2018
Hankins waited it out last year too and finally got the deal he wanted from Indy. Him leaving yesterday really not a surprise.
In regards to free agency and our plan...Pryor, McClain and McGee last year. A year later, we still have the same problems on the Dline and no running game. Bruce needs to do better. Hankins would be a major upgrade, get it done. |
Re: Redskins free agent signings 2018
I bet we sign Hankins this week

Other than that, I think they have been building the team through the draft, like we all clamored for them to do. We should address DL, OG, and/or RB early, and add a few nice pieces in the later rounds. |

I like your SB bet over that one. Hankins and the Skins passed on each other last year, so I won't be shocked whichever way it goes. Hopefully you are right on both accounts! |
Cant argue with we still need work in these two areas. However I do believe last years injury bug was a statistical anomaly. Look at the vikings from 2 years ago. I love the one year prove it deal, then pay for production with Zac Brown. I would really be interested in how Eric Shaffer plays into this from a strategy point of view. I am not sure it gets better than him league wide. We always seem to have wiggle room and not very much in the way of dead money. |

Injury prone 31 year old is not want I want tie up valuable cap money on. Plus his play has diminished over the last two to three years. We need Hankins and a bulldozer left guard. Shawn Lauvau is not the answer. So we better not resign him. Stopping the run and fixing our o-line has to be our priorities or else our hope for playoffs dies before the season starts. |
Re: Redskins free agent signings 2018
Sylvester Williams coming in for a visit. Perhaps Hankins is asking too much money?

Re: Redskins free agent signings 2018
I think the Skins are doing due diligence. Gotta bring in a guy who can give you good rotation snaps, but may not need to be "THE" guy. Still want Hankins tho.

Hope it's for good money. If it's close to $7M per season it should be worth another 5th round compensatory pick. |

At least he's still getting 5 million. Hopefully he does well and he finds a home there. Indianapolis is nicer than Baltimore anyways.

Re: Redskins free agent signings 2018
Probably a 6th
|
Re: Redskins free agent signings 2018
Right now we're at:
- a third for Cousins - a fifth for Murphy - a sixth for Grant - a seventh for Niles Paul Spencer Long and Paul Richardson roughly cancel each other out. |
Re: Redskins free agent signings 2018
Apparently Redskins are interested in Bennie Logan but waiting for Williams and/or Hankins first per John Keim
|
Re: Redskins free agent signings 2018
same old skins. find 5 million per for a 31 year old, injury prone corner. but let hankins walk. we havent had run stoppers since butz, grant?
|
Re: Redskins free agent signings 2018
Cooley grades Scandrick as a C. Basically just a guy at corner, still has good speed, not great in zone, good leader, could possibly be a B but hasn’t played that way lately with obvious injury concerns

Just remember we may not know the entire story. Maybe Hankins wanted to see if anything was out there before he signed. Just because they walk out of Redskins Park without a deal doesn’t mean that we didn’t put our best foot forward. |
