Generally speaking if you turn down employment the benefits end. You have to be ready and able to work to receive unemployment.

Just skimming the rules it appears that $600 federal money is just a bonus on top of the state unemployment, so receiving it becomes dependent on eligibility for state unemployment. So refusing to return to work should kill both state and fed benefits.

I believe there are State by State waivers or watered down "look for work requirements". In Maryland I think as long as you are saying youre working on your resume and things like that, you check the "actively looking for work" box.

Re money going to people still employed or not financially impacted ...

I still get paid the same and I do want people and families who truly need it to get money. The guy who owns and runs the little lunch shop in my office building, he had to close down bc no one was going in. I cant imagine what he is going through and tons of people similar to him.

at the same time .. there are people who werent working and doing anything with their life before this and if they are going to get a damn tax funded check ... i want my tax funded check.

Re: Coronavirus (political)

In hindsight, I wish Trump came out as soon as possible and put a 2-3 month federal shutdown on things.

That doesn't block individual states doing what is right for them locally. I love me some 10th amendment. But that would have allowed for shutting down international flights and out of state flights. Local governments would get to make assessments for what is best for them while federally, some risks got mitigated.

But at the same time I can see why he tried to keep things more short term and positive. I mean look at the 22+ million people out of work. And its only gonna get worse. IMO we're only at the tip of the iceberg of the economic destruction COVID-19 is gonna cause. We're all lucky we live in the best country in the world. Don't care if it's during Obama, Trump, Carter, etc. Us citizens make this country the 🐐, not any politician.

Whether people want to admit it or not there is a balance between some people dying and another depression. I don't know what the line is and it probably differs from person to person, but there is a line.

Hindsight is always 20/20. This is a once in a generation (at most) thing that is happening. There is no perfect solution. And we'll never know how many Americans were infected before anyone knew the world Coronavirus.

Wish we were all less into blaming and/or being defensive. But easier said than done nowadays (myself 100% included).

Hope everyone is staying safe. God bless!

Travel from New York City seeded wave of U.S. outbreaks

https://www.seattletimes.com/nation-world/travel-from-new-york-city-seeded-wave-of-u-s-outbreaks/

The findings are drawn from geneticists’ tracking signature mutations of the virus, travel histories of infected people and models of the outbreak by infectious disease experts.

“We now have enough data to feel pretty confident that New York was the primary gateway for the rest of the country,” said Nathan Grubaugh, an epidemiologist at the Yale School of Public Health.

The central role of New York’s outbreak shows that decisions made by state and federal officials — including waiting to impose distancing measures and to limit international flights — helped shape the trajectory of the outbreak and allowed it to grow in the rest of the country.

The city joins other densely populated urban hot spots around the world, starting with Wuhan, China, and then Milan, that have become vectors for the virus’s spread.

Some employers have worried it will be difficult to convince workers to return to low-wage jobs because Congress approved an extra $600 a week for unemployed workers through July 31.

My line cooks are making $960 a week on unemployment and none of them want to come back because I can’t pay them that. I don’t blame them,” restaurant owner and chef Joe Sparatta told the Richmond Times-Dispatch earlier this month.

These stories are common across the country...people don’t want to work because they rather collect unemployment and sit on their lazy ass

I think what it will come down to is the unemployment benefits being tied to being "active and able for work".

I would think at some point the state(s) are figuring out what is going on and is making sure to change / enforce the language to stipulate that you must be willing to work to continue your benefits.

So, if your job calls you and says they are opening back up but you say no thanks, that should end your unemployment right there at the moment that you had your job offered back to you, and you chose to remain unemployed.

As time goes on i would have to think they enact something like that to keep people from blatantly / purposefully abusing / exploiting the system.

They already have that in place, and yes it is enforced. If an employer knows a (former) employee is refusing work it benefits the employer to report it, and Unemployment, at least in Md, will defer to the employer a lot of the time unless there is an obvious negligence/issue.

Yeah that's why I'm not understanding a lot of the chatter on this subject. If an employer is offering the employee their job back and they refuse, the benefits will end. It's not as if employees can just willingly sit home and collect unemployment.

*edit apparently some states aren't enforcing the job search requirement, hence this issue exists. But if they turn down their prior job, it can end their benefits.

I agree...it just puts the business owner in a terrible spot...the actually job creator. And unfortunately, the longer it goes on it becomes dependency on the system and the tax payer. It’s not right...it’s not “in the spirit” of what the system should be...it’s a helping hand for those in need, when that need appears. It’s not a lifestyle period.

The chatter of why...it’s putting unnecessary pressure on welfare system, affects the economy and unemployment numbers, it affects the business owner with qualified help, and it’s the ethics of those using the system is out of wack.

People shouldn’t be getting fired for refusing their job to be on a welfare system. That’s the big fucking problem

To be fair this is an unusual time. The additional benefits aren't going to last forever. And it still comes back to our country having a wage issue when it comes to jobs that we didn't even appreciate were essential before all this, like grocery store workers. The fact that so many Americans live paycheck to paycheck and are a step away from a disaster is a problem.

Does that mean you support things like fighting countries like China who force their people to make our cheap goods on slave labor wages, lowering business tax rates, limiting legal immigration, eliminating illegal immigration, etc.? Because all those things decrease wages. This whole businesses should just pay more thing is not realistic. The money has to come from somewhere and business owners need to make a profit.

We need to make more things in America and Americans have to be willing to pay more for the products they use. I am 100% fine with that. Short term I would have to make some cutbacks on discretionary spending if prices increased, but in the long run we'd all hopefully make more money due to wage increases and competition for employees, to at least offset the price increases.

There are many things that go into increasing wages. I don't think most people are willing to accept all of them. Only the things that already fall in line with our beliefs.

Unfortunately greed is a human condition. Capitalism is the best system in the world but it would be way better if all business owners/management would operate in, for lack of a better term, good faith.

I don't know how you fix the wage inequality thing in a way that doesn't involve way too much government regulation or being anti-capitalist.

I'd like to think that if I ever own a business that I'd have a ratio I'm not willing to exceed, from what I make compared to what the lowest paid person makes.

As a grad student I made $17,000/year (about 20 years ago) after winning the biggest U.S. university math competition. ...and it takes a while to get your Ph.D. If you go into academia you don't really make it back, unless you play the right office politics. My thesis was "rediscovered" a decade later and declared the "idea of the year" by a bioinformatics blog, and for that I received... $0. By then I was out of the field because my work was used to make the "office pet's" career, (so he got credit for all my work), and I gave up.

Maybe we should consider making competent scientists a little better paid so they don't have to worry about finances. I saw an article a few years ago that stated that 30% of the Ph.D.s teaching university extension courses are on welfare. So they get crap wages for working hours per day on getting their degree and are rewarded with crap pay afterwards.

I'm tired of hearing of the poor teachers and waitresses all the time with no mention of the people who have busted their ass for years for no benefit, but their (almost unpaid) research is then heavily used.

Use to be the people would invest in Companies that were good profitable Companies but the investors would stay out of running the Company. You invested in IBM or Standard Oil becuase they were good run Companies and if they weren't you take your money and put it somewhere else, now not only do the investors want to be rich immediately but they want to run the company without knowing a damn bit about it.

Eric Trump Claims Democrats' Cooked-Up COVID-19 Will 'Magically' Vanish Election Day

Taking a page from his dad’s playbook, Eric Trump insisted in an interview Saturday that COVID-19 will “magically” disappear — after election day.

He indicated that the coronavirus that has killed 312,000 people around the globe — including nearly 90,000 Americans — is a ploy cooked up by the Democrats to stop Donald Trump from rallying his supporters at campaign events.

Democratic presidential frontrunner Joe Biden “loves this,” the middle son told Jeanine Pirro on Fox News.

“They think they’re taking away Donald Trump’s greatest tool, which is to go into an arena and fill it with 50,000 people every time.” Trump has never had 50,000 people in an American arena.

“You watch,” Eric added. “They will milk it every single day between now and November 3rd,” he said.

“And guess what – after November 3rd, coronavirus will magically, all of the sudden, go away and disappear and everybody will be able to reopen.”

An estimated 70 percent of coronavirus deaths in Minnesota have been linked to long-term-care facilities. In at least six states, these fatalities account for half of all COVID-19 deaths, and according to the World Health Organization, half of all coronavirus fatalities in Europe have been traced to nursing homes too. Some of this mortality is linked to long-term-care facilities that are shoddily run or that violate health standards. But most of them are doing the best they can with what they have. Lol...yes g1 as the data comes in we have realized this. We have 1009 deaths here Virginia and 591 are in long term care facilities. In fact look closer at the numbers here specifically at age...Zero death 0-19...9 deaths from age 20-39...22 from 40-49. 53 50-59. So that means 924 Ages 60+ Or 92%.

So let’s ask ourself What the infection rates versus death rates...while I gotta imagine it’s gonna be more that flu (2 or 3 times worse? )it will be considered on the Same spectrum as the flu and not mers , Ebola, etc.

TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS

NAVARRO, praising Trump's pandemic response: “This starting gun for the China pandemic started on Jan. 30 when President Trump had the courage to pull down the flights from China. ... So don’t tell me we lost February, because I was there. I’m right here. And this president was directing us to move as quickly as possible.” — interview Sunday on ABC's “This Week.”

TRUMP: “In January I put – and I was criticized by everybody including Dr. Fauci — I put in a wall. We put in a very strong wall. Only a small number of people were allowed in, and they were all U.S. citizens. I can’t tell a U.S. citizen, you can’t come back into your country. ... We actually acted very early.” — Fox interview Thursday.

THE FACTS: The travel restrictions he imposed on China in late January had other loopholes besides the exceptions for U.S. citizens. It was not a solid “wall” or total ban, as Trump and his trade adviser suggest.

There were many gaps in containment and initial delays in testing in January and February, leading to the U.S. rising to No. 1 globally in the number of people infected by the coronavirus.

His order temporarily barred entry by foreign nationals who had traveled in China within the previous 14 days, with exceptions for U.S. citizens, but also their immediate family and permanent residents.

Dr. Anne Schuchat, the No. 2 official at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told The Associated Press the federal government was also slow to understand how much coronavirus was spreading from Europe, which helped drive the acceleration of U.S. outbreaks in February. Trump announced restrictions for many European countries in mid-March.

”I think the timing of our travel alerts should have been earlier," she said.

___

VIRUS TESTING

TRUMP: “We just cracked 10 million tests ... Ten million. ... If you look down here, these are other countries that have not done anywhere near what we’re doing. We’re double. If you add them up and double them, we’ve done more tests. But I can’t get the press to print that, unfortunately.” — remarks Wednesday with governors of Colorado and North Dakota.

TRUMP: “What we’ve done on testing, we’ve now tested more than the entire world put together.” — remarks Thursday to reporters.

THE FACTS: False. The U.S. has not tested more than all other countries combined, let alone double the number for the entire world. It also lags many countries in testing its population proportionally.

Together, just three countries — Russia, Germany and Italy — have reported more tests than the U.S.

This week, the U.S. had reported conducting more than 10 million tests since the pandemic began, after failing in the crucial early weeks of the outbreak. That compared with more than 23 million tests by the other countries in the top 10 of the testing count.

The U.S. was followed by Russia, Germany, Italy, Spain, Britain, India, United Arab Emirates, Turkey and France.

BRETT GIROIR, the federal health official overseeing U.S. testing: “Everybody who needs a test can get a test. ... If you’re symptomatic with a respiratory illness, that is an indication for a test and you can get a test. If you need to be contact traced, you can get a test.” — news briefing on May 11.

THE FACTS: Not according to public health experts, who say the U.S. is not near the testing level to safely reopen.

Researchers at the Harvard Global Health Institute, for instance, said the U.S. should now be doing 900,000 tests a day to help stop the spread of the virus. Trump this week said the U.S. was doing about 300,000.

Giroir stressed that an adequate number of diagnostic tests were available for those with symptoms of COVID-19, but studies have shown many who get infected never show symptoms. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious diseases expert, has urged enough testing to include at the least asymptomatic people in vulnerable populations, such as nursing homes.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently broadened its guidelines for coronavirus testing to include certain asymptomatic people who may be at higher risk.

More than 40 states are failing to test widely enough to reach the level needed to safely loosen stay-at-home orders, according to an AP analysis of metrics developed by the Harvard Global Health Institute. The group includes four — Colorado, Florida, Georgia and Texas – that have already reopened.

Problem is people out there will buy into crap like this. The misinformation campaign is just beginning.

Lol could u imagine a travel restriction where we deny us citizens returning to the country? Could you imagine what the press would say? It’s like we don’t understand anything...yes the travel ban stopped people from coming in and naturally spread it. Biden and Pelosi both made statements criticizing the travel ban calling it racist. Lol, so they would have simply allowed travelers in spreading it around. We are too woke to stop the spread...

In the end...it was already here. Was it a solid wall? No
