Re: Name Reveal 2.2.22
Yes it does, and the three stars and two bars on the D.C. Flag come directly from the George Washington family crest/coat of arms. So Commanders would be a fitting name.
Sent from my SM-G781U using Tapatalk
Maybe practically true but not legally correct. i.e. some trademarks (depending on the legal locality they are established) are renewable, they can lapse through lack of use etc. No trademark exists in perpetuity without the owners active involvement, but in this case, it's likely that any dispute we were headed for and avoided, is with a name that's in current trademarked use. Maybe we could have gone back and found a lapsed one? Ye Olde Warthoges? Ye Scarlet Werwulf? |

Ye Scarlet Werwulf?
I'm pretty sure CRed was being sarcastic ;-) Even with existing trademarks, you have to prove potential consumer confusion. In the end it's all about leverage, and how bad do you want to use the name, how much are you ready to pay to avoid going to court, and how much the other camp really wants to go to court... Already posted it, but good read about how all this works (about Redwolves but what you learn in there applies to any name IMO): https://www.arkansasonline.com/news/2020/jul/21/wolves-not-just-for-teams-taking/ |
Re: Name Reveal 2.2.22
And this is where I fail to understand the seeming disinterest in the fan favourites. WFT could easily (and maybe will) stick to the W logo or a derivation, and go with Redwolves (one word) for instance. No comparison on logo and little confusion therefore with a name that wasn't even identical. And with Snyders dollars, probably easily winnable if challenged like this case.
I actually suspect they didn't want a contentious name considered on 2 fronts; any legal action would likely draw the process out and be bad publicity (pro sports team picking on a school), and the lesser factor that it would have tipped everyone to the desired name. But that doesn't mean you have to roll over and go with something tame or unrepresentative. I'll support it whatever it is, but I won't be comfortable with something derivative/lacking in dynamic potential. Commanders is meh, and Admirals would be worse in my mind. |
Re: Name Reveal 2.2.22
FWIW , I spoke to Greg Curl (Kam's dad) and he is hearing its Commanders as well.. Now he can't officially say that but you know Kam knows lol.
Glad it'll be over in a few weeks. |

Re: Name Reveal 2.2.22
I hope they shock us, and Commanders was just a trick/placeholder, and they announce some bad ass name.
Washington Commanders is sooooo boring. C'mon Washington Waterbucks. |
Re: Name Reveal 2.2.22
Fans are bipolar I swear. On one hand people complain wanted transparency through this process, now people are hoping it's all a smoke screen, lol

I didn't care about transparency or not, I just wanted a cool name, no matter how it happened. Commanders is fine. I don't hate it. It's just a blah name. It's no Waterbucks. |
Re: Name Reveal 2.2.22
In a vacuum you could probably say that most names are blah and boring. We're just used to them. In time we'll get used to Commanders too.

Re: Name Reveal 2.2.22
cheers to sounding like some usfl re-tread...
hope its redtails at this point or something hog related which it prolly wont be commanders sucks. |
Re: Name Reveal 2.2.22
Anyone else think that because some of these names have been circulating so widely now, and still a month away from the grand reveal, that they're all red herrings?

LOL. A very uninspired choice. They should have gone back to Zephyrs which was the franchise's original name. Before that it was Packers, but that would have gone nowhere fast and for good reason. |

The discussions would have been horrendous. The first week of Feb makes perfect sense timing wise.

Wizards come from a contest and was not the result of a multi-year internal deliberation. But I agree, the name isn't very good. |

Really doubt a name is going to come out of nowhere. It will be one that we've heard.

Agree, but I doubt they are teasing it in any of those videos. |
Re: Name Reveal 2.2.22
These new names, Commanders and Admirals remind me of the USFL teams of the 80's. Federals, Generals... just total cheap crap.
I didn't like Redwolves but I would have come around on it since so much of the fanbase loved it. It is waaaaaaaaaay better than what's being thrown out there. Just makes it more difficult to stay loyal to this team. Just name the team the Washington Clowns. Make the logo of Dan and Tayna w/ clown noses. I wonder if Dan will be in NY on 2/2. If he is I would love to take the train up there and get near where he is standing so I can heckle the living shit out of him. Yeah I am that kind of petty. |

I wish Leonsis would go back to the Bullets so bad. Abe is dead and his family no longer owns the team so not sure why they still are the Wizards. I have a Bullets hat and wear it all the time. |

Re: Name Reveal 2.2.22
If it's the Commanders you know what the shorthand name will be... the Commies.
Wanna go see the Commies game on Sunday? How'd the Commies do last night? The Washington Commies? Defeats the whole purpose. |

When Ted assumed control of the team, he invited fans to email him with suggestions and promised he would answer all. I did just that and suggested he bring back Bullets. He (or one of his minions) answered. He did not say no, but that they had some other work to do first and then would consider it. I am perplexed as to why I have not heard back from Jason Wright. :saywhat: |
Re: Name Reveal 2.2.22
In this day and age the name bullets is 100% dead and buried.

I've always thought black alternate uniforms were overrated and overdone but I reserve the right to see these first.
Black alternates I hate... Jets, Eagles, and Cardinals. Just doesn't work for them. |
