Marko Mizzitchell should be ahead of DT on the depth chart. I'm just sayin'.

I hate losing preseason or not I blame the refs for this loss the head ref especially looks like he had a hard on for the skins tonite. We should have won 31-27 based on them calling that fumble recovery dead but blame Westbrook for not heading to the end zone.

I wouldn't put him ahead of Kelly....has Mitchell played much against 1st team defenses (I didn't watch the Steelers game).

Well...for a guy that is given an opportunity to be an NFL starter, it aint much better than ARE and he is dependable.
To be honest, I am not really suprise.
Actually, I am one of those folks that believe it is more likely that Kelly may become our #2...that is where I am a little down because he went backwards today....but that is just one game, he has been progressing nicely until tonight....on the other hand...Marco Mitchell to me has jumped significantly and is potentially equall to these two...he is certainly equal in terms of attitude...rememeber Gary Clary?
This guy has got a "want to" equal or greater than Santana Moss...
I am really suprised (remember I am skeptical in nature) about this guy.
I am thrilled about Marko Pollo
This guy can do things we haven't been able to do in years....he's got football instincts, knowlege, red zone impact, GIBBS guts.
What an amazing pick up by the FO...if they don't try to develop him as # 3 or better they are nuts.
That guy is a SERIOUS PLAYER!

Can we agree on this, the future looks pretty bright for the WR corps.

Hopefully Marko is the #5, but who knows. The Daniel no show means he is just about toast, unless Zorn plays him extensively against the Jags, but it looks like he was brought in to light a fire under Colt's ass. Colt had a half decent outing with one TD and an INT. I would have let Chase in for a bit after Colt got his TD, b ut I am not a coach. I hope I am wrong, but Chase is practice squad fodder now in my mind.

All in all a great game!!!!! THomas and Kelly are going to be exciting players to watch this season. The first team O line is very solid!!!!! JC shook the rust off and kicked some ass. Loved the 4 yard TD run. He took over. That is what I want to see!!!!! For the first time in a long time I have reason to be optimisitic about our team, not just the homer type optimism either. Thing is can we look this good for an entire 16 game season? Can't wait to see the Skins again up here in the D. I hope we can put up 30+ pts against the Lions this time.

I do agree...it is nice to have not only 2 but now 3 legit young guy alll big guys that will be taking over the reigns.

I see it this way....MOSS #1, Marko Mitchell # 2....ARE in the slot... and the slacker #2's pissed off on the bench waiting for an opportunity.

I would love for Mitchell to get significant starter reps...is is likely?
No, but this guy brings it on game day...his touches are TDs....the guy is money...who give a crap...Cooley is Money...we love him, Santana is Money....what the freak?
Portis is amazing....Marko Mitchell seems to be a playmaker.
If I were Zorn, I'd line him up #2 in the last preseason game to see what he can do.

Devon Thomas made ok improvement, albeit slow and steady.
Malcolm Kelly, who had a leg up on #2, went backwards, missing a couple key receptions, one being a TD....however, his ability and progress has been steady.

The reality is this.
We wont see a significant improvement in passing game stats until mid season unless marko mitchell is engaged immediately within the final week of preseason...in my opinion

GusFrerotte 08-28-2009 11:56 PM

Re: Redskins Patriots game thread.

Kelly will get it done, so will Thomas. Thomas already seems to have made great strides since being a total dumbass last season. Kelly did drop some "gimme" types, but still he has potential yet unfilled.

Re: Redskins Patriots game thread.

I would carry 4 WR this year Moss, Kelly, Thomas and Marko (Randle-El is the odd man out) and give the roster spot to Mason in the RB area. I like Buzbee and would get rid of Wynn is a spot can be found.

skinsnut 08-29-2009 12:03 AM

Re: Redskins Patriots game thread.

I will say it again, since I slammed Zorn mid-seaon last year.

Zorn adapted to Campbell strengths...deep ball, play action....I'd never thought I'd see it...it resulted in a 7-0 start....this aint no west-coast crap.

Now...I am skeptical that one preseason game adjustment means much considering he didn't adust at all last season but based on JC's comments on how thrilled he was to go deep on the Steelers last week....combined with the amazing deep success with Santana's acrobatic deep catch abilitiy plus enzone pass interference...hopefully Zorn gets it....
The redskins team is built for one thing....
Defense
Running
Deep passing play action.

Like it or not, this is a Gibbs squad.
We need to adjust the system to maximize the capabilities of our player.
Kudos to Jim Zorn for not trying to force a square peg through a round hole...
Nice adjustment MR Zorn!

you need to do more work Mr Blache.

Cant be done...simple solutions, no option , keep 5 receivers,
Moss, ARE, Kelly, Thomas, Marko-pollo...no discussion.

ARE is at worst the #3 receiver on the squad...the young guys just haven't proved anything yet....but wow...marko?
I am waiting for him to screw up...but he just doesn't do it...the guy is like cooley in the endzone....oh yeah...dont we have probs in the red zone?
how about Cooely and Marko left and right?

I am frankly a littlle sad about Davis just being vanilla at TE so far

MTK 08-29-2009 12:14 AM

Re: Redskins Patriots game thread.

I was skeptical of Marko initially but I've been impressed with him the last 2 weeks. He just looks like a NFL WR in the way he runs routes, catches, and blocks. He's got that "it" factor.

GusFrerotte 08-29-2009 12:20 AM

Re: Redskins Patriots game thread.

That is what I mean by the young guys helping ARE. They all have potential and will make great strides as the season goes. Secondaries won't be able to double Moss or ARE now, as another WR threat will exist.

Agreed....liking this guy. Still say he looks alot like a wannabe R. Moss out there. :)

Re: Redskins Patriots game thread.

There are significant improvements roster wise if they keep Chris Wilson at olb and Marko Mitchell at WR and Marcus Mason at RB.
Oline and kicker are still up for grabs as well as #3 QB.
Chase still seems way more NFL stable to me than Colt...but we wont know until game #4.

Horton, Barnes are soliid, Tryon is still on the fence, Tryon has improved but is not as good as westbrook...as crazy as that seems....our kicker is up for grabs...Mike Williams will not likley make the cut at this point.
We have signifiant Pass rushiing dept probs at OT.
Samuals has declined...not to mention RT
Our backup TE is stilll weak due to reps issues.
Our Olb's have major issues.
Our premium CB declined significantly which requres safety support...which is sad....Deangelo aint no healty Shaun Springs
(I see us drafting a CB or LOT #1 draft pick next yr.)

I am really suprised at the adjustment zorn has made to go deep.
A MAJOR one game improvement!

The other issus is this....our offense needs significant misdiriecrion, reverses, screens, play action, shotgun, hurry up, etc

Standard offense scheming, outperforming a professional defensive scheme is not enough to out produce a team optimize for maximizing points

Re: Redskins Patriots game thread.

this is what happens when morons try to explain the wonders of pre-season. yes Marko looked incredible, but what would he do if he was in there with the first stringers? All of his action...or let's say a solid majority has been in the 2nd half when he is playing vs. watered down competition. Oh...and beating Carlos Rogers in practice doesn't count, Rogers is an awful corner.

I felt the real story about tonights game, was our lack of secondary play, minus Horton who I feel is going to emerge as a leader out here, Hall looked mediocre...certainly for the amount of money we are paying him, and I can't even remember the last time I saw Landry pop somebody. Seriously...I read an article prepping Landry to be the next Ed Reed...while that may sound crazy he could actually do it if people feared him. Like a certain someone who used to wear #21 out there.

Overall I was pleased, but i'd like our Offense to sustain drives and give our Defense a break, I feel the biggest reason we trailed off our success last year is our starting O not being able to give our D a good enough rest.

I liked what Phil Simms said about Zorn and Campbell:(paraphrasing from memory here) Zorn said he drew up new plays to take advantage of the fact Campbell has a big arm and can stretch the field with ease.

That may certainly be true considering the sudden coming of age with the wideouts.

Marko looked good sticking with the play and blocking downfield for Cooley's big catch and run. He tied up 2 guys and definitely was responsible for at least 20-25 yards of that YAC for Cooley. Consequently that play was with the first team. It made me happy to see him not just catching balls but contributing in other ways, he is definitely a keeper. Maybe this year's nice surprise like Horton was last year.

The fact that the receivers were consistently running wide open was one of my biggest takeaways from last night. Looks like Zorn might know what he's doing when it comes to the play calling and the receivers are doing a good job of route running. I'm sure Campbell will become more consistent with deeper passes as long as they keep dialing them up. Practice makes perfect.

Good call. Downfield blocking is something we haven't done a good job of, so it's good to see the rookie taking it seriously. Another reason size is such a plus at the WR position. Maybe he'll motivate the starters. Maybe we'll see some Portis bust some long runs as a result.

We officially have FIREPOWER! Pro-bowl caliber players - Sellers, Moss, Portis, Samuels, Cooley mixed in with our young talent - Kelly, Thomas, Mitchell, Davis. If Campbell plays like he did last night and Zorn stays aggressive with the play calling, this Offense should easily average 20 a game. We play some pansies in the first 6 games, so we'll know early on what kind of Offense we've got.

I agree. They seemed to struggle when they went back to the short passing attack. 3rd and 3 doesn't mean you have to throw 4 yards to Moss, although he shouldn't have dropped that pass. I hope they gain enough confidence to go over the top once in a while when it's third and short (a la the Colts).
