A. J. Smith is officially the dumbest GM in the league. At the very [B]BEST[/B],he will get a 3rd round compensatory pick in the 3rd round. (that's the 3rd round picks After all the teams have picked in the 3rd round...very low..almost 4th rounder)

and I've heard,that's not even a guarentee because it depends on the contract offered to VJ when he walks in the offseason.

and that's if he even gets anything at all with the lockout and new CBA rules after negotiations.

The only thing to keep him from looking [B]REALLY[/B] stupid,is to meet VJ's contract demands,which looks like won't happen with A.J. Smith's ego...

But from Shefter,ESPN and NFL Network,there were [B]MULTIPLE[/B] teams with a contract ready and compensation.

The Vikings already had a 2nd rounder and an additional Pick that A.J. has turned down...Which is already more than what they will get in return for losing VJ.

PLUS...they had control of where they would send him...NFC and out of division...
When VJ walks next season,not only could the Chargers not get ANYTHING in return for him or a comp 3rd at best...but he could choose to sign with Denver,Oakland or K.C. and be in their division or with a different AFC team.

Not to mention,i'm hearing that VJ can sit out the remainder 2010 season if he chooses too....

Can't believe AJ would rather walk away with nothing instead of acquiring a second round pick. One that looks like it's going to be an early one should the Vikings continue on their current course.

I've gone back and forth on this, the most anyone should of offered was a 2nd rd they get a 3rd based on if VJ signs with another team next yr and the size of his contract I beleive.

Yeah, it's quite clear Smith wants to keep Jackson to San Diego one way or the other, but also lower his market value at the same time. The article says that he wanted the Vikes to sign VJax to a 1-year six million dollar contract. Sheesh.

by trade deadline, Minnesota may very well have Sidney Rice back, they will certainly know how long he will be gone. Any leverage that SD had they lost. Unless VJ does hold out the whole season, and then we get to do this whole thing over again since he won't have accrued a league year...

I doubt he'd do this, he needs to accrue his season to become an UFA.

I find it funny that so many people on this thread are on VJ's side just because they want him to be a Redskins. Typically, whenever there is a story such as this (player vs. team) 9 times out of 10 the fans side with the team (i.e. Revis, up to a certain degree Haynesworth, pretty much any player that holds out). I know that every holdout is different, I just always see fans siding with the team (i.e. the guy should just show up; the player needs to honors his contract; etc., etc.).

what an idiot. I know he drafts good, but getting a 2nd round plus a 3rd rounder for VJax should have been a reflex decision. Plain stupid.......

It's a simple concept. [B]Winning[/B] takes a [B]higher priority [/B]than [B]character except[/B] when the fan [B]deems it convenient (aka when said player does not benefit "their team.[/B]). I said as much in the Haynesworth trade thread.

I basically agree with this post. And his response to not getting traded was ridiculous. Yeah AJ was being petty, but if this was a Skins restricted FA most everyone here would be fussing about the player.

Not only were the redskins interested,but they already had a 4 yr 44 mil dollar already on the table...so closing this thread before the week 6 deadline would be premature...

We also had a deadl in place for haynesworth to tennesse as part of this package,but was only offered a 4th from them.

So we were going to offer that 4th and our very own 2nd rounder (w/contrat of 4yr/44m) but the deal was nix by S.D and A.J.Smith.

There were multiple teams involved...

The situation here is different -- he has no contract to honor. He wants a long-term contract and they would only give him a 1 year deal, so he didn't sign it. Then, they basically insulted him by lowering the offer to 600K. He wants some commitment from his team and they won't give it up. AJ Smith is a dick, plain and simple. I can totally understand why VJax doesn't want to work for him.

VJ is still a restricted free agent. While not at the same type of production, Rocky McIntosh and Carlos Rogers were in the same boat (being FA).

No. There was a guy who was posting on the Redskins.com article comments section claiming that he had a "bro" who worked as a lawyer or something for the organization. Due to the nature of his job, this "bro" of his had access to a lot of private meetings of the guys at the top. This was during training camp.

can anyone find a link to jacksons rookie contract terms. i know it was for 5 years and he made approx 900k last year but i cant find one dang link that lays out his rookie contract terms.

also i cant find a dang site that has stats like "times targeted" or "catches allowed" or "tpa".

i know footballoutsiders has stats like DVOA or success pecent but none of the normal cornerback stats like catches allowed.

I kow there have been comments made about how VJ has handled the situation and alos about comments that came out after the deadline yesterday, but this comment right here isn't malicious or anything towards SD it shows a level of intellgence for VJ and I for one agree with him.

The problem with the NFL is that teams are not required to full fill their contracts so why should we hold the player to that standard. If I'm correct they have the same issue right now with a OL.

Ruhskins - to a degree but in situations where a guy signed a nominal rookie contract and has outperformed that contract and hasnt complained up until now (4-5 years later). i dont know the exact numbers per year, but he made approx 900k last year making the probowl.

Jackson held up his end but due to the CBA issues the chargers decided to tender him instead of rewarding him with a new contract to a player that has straight balled for you for 4 years making chump change.

at some point, you have to reward players who have played hard for you for years making a fraction of what other guys make.

the chargers are setting a real bad precedent and impression in their locker room. what charger player is honestly going to believe smith when he says, "yeah i know you are in your 3rd year of your rookie contract and we love the fact that you are a probowler making less than 1 mil a year but trust me, just believe us when we say when the time comes we will show you the money."

its the same thing with chris johnson. he was making chump change from his rookie contract but has been the best RB for the past 2 years. given the ton of touches the titans force on him, they had to show him some respect.

aj smith is setting himself for a bad rep among his own players and any future charger.

Honestly, I agree with VJ's standpoint. Teams will quickly get production from a low-round players at chump change and not pay them. My comments were mainly to point out how in most of these cases (if not all of them) fans side with the team.

I think if this were happening to a team in a bigger market (i.e. New York, Washington, etc., etc.) it would be seen as a much bigger deal to SD.

As you say, AJ Smith and the FO there are setting themselves up to be seen in bad light by the players. I wonder (and I'm sure) SD fans would want this to be over and done with.

I think this has the potential to be a substantial issue during the next talks for the CBA. AJ Smith being a dickhead, plain and simple, to his players and not rewarding them with a longer term contract for play WAY above and beyond their current deal. I think the players definitely have more traction than the owners going into these negotiations, and this situation is just another arrow in their quiver.


All the owners and GMs should be a little pissed off at Smith right now, because in the long run, his little "My cock is bigger than your cock" game might end up costing the owners a little bit of money.

What is unethical is you drinking and driving for the second time and getting yourself suspended by the league, threatening to sit out the whole season and then crying foul when the Chargers stick it to you. If I'm the owner and he wanted top 3 money I'd screw him too. Boo hoo hoo.

i went over to bolttalk after posting here to see what the fans thought as well as try and find details on jacksons contract.

Im not exaggerating, every single charger fan posting on there was 100% in aj smiths corner. i was very surprised. they view jackson's agent as a cry baby b/c they think he advised jackson to not sign tender b/c he would get dealt but now that hasnt happened, jackson's agents comments are viewed as being whiny and cya.

saden - did smith promise jackson he would get a new contract last year?

I didn't realize VJ's agent was the same as Revis'. Players need to look closely at who they hire, and see what their track record is. We can be thankful TW did that this summer!
