Same here. Plus, a healthy Manning throwing to Colston would probably mean similar production as he had in New Orleans. |

o call Reggie Wayne, Anthony Gonzalez o target NT/DE Paul Soliai o try and trade out of the 6th pick and target BPA OL (e.g. Martin, Decastro) o keep adding BPA talent with the specific focus of upgrading OL and a starting caliber Safety o draft a developmental QB with the second 4th round pick or later (maybe one of the QBs rated highly on their board falls? or take a flier on a Russell Wilson in the 5th) o sign a developmental/journeyman FA QB
Gonzalez hasn't been healthy in the league. When was the last time he stayed healthy and produced. Besides we should be targeting Pierre garcon, he's better. But really it doesn't matter, because eddie royal seems like a lock to come here, no sense in 2 slot WRs. And Soliai isn't happening, sorry to burst your bubble. We aren't signing 2 NT's back to back/moving one of them out of position. |

Also this. The only thing I don't like is Colston's age. I hope I'm wrong on this but I believe he's 28 or 29, and his injury history doesn't bode well for his future. When healthy he's a very solid wideout. |

I personally think that Peyton and Wayne are a packaged deal. It'll be one of those things Peyton will dictate to whichever team signs him. Also keep in mind the Skins were pretty interested in Wayne last time he was set to become a free agent. |

Cofield would be a much better player as a DE (especially if Carriker is gone) and Soliai would be a much better fit as a NT. The only reason we are probably not get him is because of money (and for some reason JH/MS refuse to get a true 3-4 NT). |

He'll be 29 when the season starts. I like him, but I also wonder how much of his success is a function of Drew Brees and that offense. I'll put it this way, I don't think his best years are ahead of him. |

Yeah like 5 years ago before MS and BA were here. But there may be some truth about Wayne and PM being a package deal. Personally I would rather have one of the younger FA WRs like Colston or Bowe. I would understand this argument if we were having a rookie like RG3 or Orton throwing to Colston. My only concern about Colston is his health. That's a very important question too. I would hope if we signed Manning he'd be able to duplicate his production. But the question of how successful he'll be without Brees won't be able to be answered before he signs with another team. Quite honestly I'm not a big fan of this FA WR class. There are playmakers in it, but I don't see any of them having a long term future of the team that signs them. And all have significant question marks. That's why if we do upgrade wide receiver, I hope we go the draft route. But if we did sign Manning, I wouldn't be opposed to Colston too much simply because Colston should be able to be productive while Manning plays, which I'd be comfortable with. I don't think Colston is one of those guys who can play into his late 30's though. |

Yeah thats what I mentioned as the second part of my answer. And true we for some reason don't want a True NT. Cofields good enough to be one in the league. IF we did get soliai we could have a beast DL similar to the packers in '10 with Cullen Jenkins (Jarvis/Bowen), Pickett(Cofield), Soliai (BJ raji). That would be BEAST. But again not happening. We get Jarvis back, hopefully (knock on wood) he looks a lot like he did last year in the preseason. But we need to be cautious because he is a 300+lb man on a recovering knee trying to get back to pro football with a family history of torn ACLs. He may not ever be the same... |

Here are some Colston highlights... [YT]Y7qjtlmbr_o[/YT]
A lot of MC's plays are Brees hitting him where only he can get to the ball. Peyton, IF healthy, can do that. MC isn't exactly the flashy WR that Dwayne Bowe or DeSean is, but he gets the job done, and is NOT a headcase like most of the FA WR's this year. |

That would push our front 3 and front 7 into the upper echelon of 3-4 defenses. |

Good points. Colston could also be more of a product of his specific system than VJax or Bowe as well. Those guys possess superior athleticism to Colston IMO. ...really tough call though. I don't envy our front office when it comes to legitimizing our WR corp. QB is easy though I could pick winners at that all day long ;) |

Re: Peyton Manning or RGIII your choice
Since we are talking about these three guys (although I know there's another thread). I thought I would post the scouting report on these guys...
VJax, 6'5" 230 lbs: Jackson has developed into one of the league's most dangerous all-purpose receivers. He has excellent size and above-average-to-good downfield speed. He does not look like he is running all that fast but with his long stride he manages to eat up a lot of ground. He has excellent body control and hand-eye coordination and knows how to use his size in a crowd. He should command a lot of attention in this year's free agent market. Bowe 6'2" 221 lbs: Bowe has shown flashes of brilliance but has also struggled to maintain consistency. He is a very talented receiver with excellent size and above-average straight-line speed and receiving skills. He is explosive off the line and can eat up the cushion on defenders. He has the ability to drop his hips to get in and out of his breaks with a good burst to separate from defenders. He shows strength both when catching the ball in traffic and when running after the catch. Colston 6'4" 225 lbs: Colston is a good-sized receiver with adequate downfield speed that can make plays at virtually every level of the field. He is a long strider that eats up ground as he closes the cushion on defenders and is an excellent route runner that knows how to set defenders up and has the ability to sink his hips to get in and out of his breaks with a good burst. He knows how to use his size and strength to catch the ball in traffic, and will extend and get good elevation to high point the ball. He has natural hands that allow him to catch the ball outside of his frame and he consistently puts the ball away quickly when turning after the catch. |

I like that idea, although I would not give up day one pick (1st or 2nd) for him. How awesome would it be if we trade our 3rd round pick for Schuab, then trade down with our 1st pick to garner more picks and draft a QB and safety in 2nd round.. |

Nay. Injury history and I feel if you took Andre Johnson away from him he wouldn't be that great. Combine that with the fact that we don't currently have Andre Johnson on our roster and that's a bad sign. |

I still don't think any of the aforementioned are long term solutions though, which are my first choice. The only short term solution I'm comfortable with is Manning. |
Before that would happen, Manning would have to be willing to put his Indianapolis legacy at risk, given that he’d be playing the Colts twice in 2012. Re: Peyton Manning or RGIII your choice
According to McShay and Kiper the price of the 2nd overall pick is likely to come down a bit after free agency when the Manning and Flynn sweepstakes end. And not only does St. Louis have to consider how far they'll be willing to drop but they'll also have to accept that Minnesota might be more flexible on price.
It might, but it might not either. I could see the Rams thinking just like half the fans here.... how can we pass up on such a good talent and take him for themselves. How do we swindle them into making the trade? by offering enough picks that they can't refuse. I could see the Browns thinking the same thing. There has been more talk of the Browns wanting RGIII at any cost. They have 2 first round picks. Little talk of Seattle maybe wanting to jump everyone for RGIII. I think we all know what the going rate is by the chart but I can also see the Rams turning this into an auction driving the price up. |
Just because Manning may be interested in playing for Houston doesn't mean he doesn't want to Here either

Re: Peyton Manning or RGIII your choice
What we do in FA QB wise should have nothing to do with what we do in the draft QB wise. Do we want to have Grossman and Beck back next year? no. So there will be a need to fill 1 spot with a Vet. The other with a drafted QB.
Free Agency: Flynn- my choice only because he's still young and healthy. Showed he can make all the throws. The question...can he play all 16 games well and mistake free? Orton- with the Bears he replaced Grossman because of injury. During the play offs Grossman replaced Orton. Orton didn't see the field for 2 yrs after. Basically a backup. If he can't beat Grossman there is a problem. Nuff said. I don't want him. Peyton Manning- Best there is if healthy but thats the question. Money is not an issue since we have 40-45 mill, no way he commands near that amount. Plenty of room to sign other FA's. Healthy he's obviously the starter allowing whatever Rookie to develope. If he's not healthy by Sept. the Rookie starts. For this reason alone I'm interested in PM. Draft: Luck- not available. Colts. but if he is not picked would be nice to have him at #6. RGIII- No matter what the team does in FA they can still trade up and get RGIII if they so choose. He's a top talent and the only thing that makes him different then other top talents is his legs. Are his legs worth it to move up? I don't think so. If he falls to #6 take him otherwise there is no need to mortgage the team. Its a luxury to have him but we could get 3 or 4 more players to fill spots in other positions. Would you trade the same picks for Flynn? cause he's just as much of an unknown. Although he has played in 2 games and proven he can beat a really good Lions defense. RGIII has not even done that. The Rest- I see the rest as a big group because I don't see any one QB standing out from each other or atleast not that far from each other. I might also be in the minority in thinking that almost anyone of them with a good OL, and talented WR's could possibly start and provide us with a half decent season. Better then Grossman or Beck. Optimism at its best. I'd look for a tall 6'3" or 6'4" + QB around the 240 range which is what Ben Rothlesburger is. Solid and hard to bring down. Again I don't see how FA should hinder what we do in the draft. We could get PM who almost no one would argue he's one of the best QB's when healthy and still trade up for RGIII. Get a couple FA WR's and draft some OL. If PM is healthy we win with the best QB in the league and RGIII developes and learns from the best. If PM is not ready to start then RGIII starts. So PM really shouldn't matter to the RGIII fans. If nothing else they should want him since they think he's done. RGIII would start. I personally like the idea of PM if we can't get Flynn. I don't mind RGIII if he fell to #6 sure take him, but I'd rather use the other 2 draft picks this year to trade back if possible and turning 2 picks into 4. This brings in more youth, more speed, more help, and more talent to back up someone if there is an injury. Look we kept all of our draft picks last year if I'm not too far off and the majority started at some point. I'd love for us to do that again. But face facts... this team is gunna want 1 Vet and a drafted Rookie going into next year. I'd rather it not be Grossman or Beck as the Vet. No Flynn- take PM. We'll worry about the draft a month later. After we see what we can do in FA and what talent we bring in. |
Re: Peyton Manning or RGIII your choice
Read the fine print. He wants to play for a Super Bowl contender
Hmmm..... and the Skins are not that? the Skins played better then the year before, the OL got better by the end of the year creating nice holes for the RB to run through, there was better protection, and we beat the SB champs twice. <- I now that may not mean much but it shows the Skins can contend. 3rd year in the same system, OL understanding their assignments better, combined with a really good run game, and I don't care what anyone says our defense was one of the best limiting teams to 20 or less points most of the time. Thats what you want. Look at the Patriots they gave up the most yrds all year but teams had a hard time scoring on them. Thats pretty much us. 5-11 doesn't sound like a contender but you have to look at the overall play and in most of those games the Skins lost by like 3 points. Get a decent QB and decent WR's and that alone could be the difference of getting a few more 1st downs for a field goal, or even 1 more TD per game. |

If he's healthy he makes any team he plays for a Super Bowl contender. See the Colts for proof...Super bowl contender with him and worst team in the league without him. |

The Skins are not as far as some of u guys think.. No one looks good with REX/BECK combo.. In fact we had a chance to sweep Dallas also, so 7-8 wins this year was in reach

It amazes still how delusion some fans are as to where this team is. If you beleive we are a PM away from a Super Bowl then you need to put the bottle down.
I be surprised if we are a wild card team next year. |
