Re: 2013 Free Agents
We're tight on the cap for this year.
BUT anyone know the estimated numbers for 2014? Does this mean that we have TONS of money to spend in 2014, and how much can we backload contracts this year? |

I dunno if Baltimore lets go of Reed and that caps swiped we need to be all over that with a solid end of career good for both side deal. Hes got a couple years left hes a little injury prone he misses a game here and there though, i surely dont bank on him in IDP leagues. But hed be a solid veteran piece to bring in. A healthy RG.. Ed Reed on the prowl.. maybe im dreamin but thatd b so ideal

alot of teams are going to be cap strapped this year, it may be hard for players to get the deals they want in the places they want to go.

I'm sure he could assist in bolstering our defense....but I'd prefer Darius Byrd over Reed...getting Reed would contradict Allen and Shanahan's plan on having the Redskins to stay younger...Byrd is young. |

i agree youth is the right way to go. and i agree id go after Jairus Byrd before more of a tackling saftey like Goldson. Byrds a young ball hawk hed definetly have a few or more INTs. |

Byrd for sure. Phillip Wheeler was a quiet big # tackler last year had a couple monster weeks. but im still lobbying for Branden Albert on the outside right. |
Re: 2013 Free Agents
I've been high on wheeler for a while. People are starting to find out about him. The thing is I can see him easily being a FA bust, playing hard for Oakland to land a big contract there or somewhere else.
LeVitre is good but too much money Byrd; We're not getting him whether he hits FA or not. Too much money Branden Albert; great RT prospect, but too much money I've been hearing HTTR247 talking about Corey Lynch extensively. That is the kind of player you need to get in FA. A guy who plays both safety positions, grades well, special teamer, and according to HTTR he's a better coverage guy than Reed Doughty. Glover Quinn is another name I like, but I prefer Brice McCain from Houston more. He's there nickelback who grades well from PFF. Under the radar signing. Jason Jones got hurt towards the middle of the season for Seattle, but he is a great DE/DT who would fit nicely as a rotational 3-4 DE for us, and he, being injured, could come cheap. Larry Grant is a backup MLB in San Fran behind Bowman and Willis; the 2 best MLBs in the game. When Grant has played he has done very well. He could be worth signing in terms of depth; if fletcher leaves; as another special teams demon; and especially if Lorenzo were to leave for a little more money in Pittsburgh. Derek Cox is a strong, decent CB, who plays on a bad team. Antone Cason is a young fast CB in San Diego who is supposed to be better than Jammer. Brent Grimes hasn't been talked about much. He's about to be 30. He just tore his achilles, but he's only played 5 years in the league and was regarded as one of the best CBs in the game just a year ago. He could be cheap due to injury, but obviously a concern. I think the reward out weighs the risk if he gets a $4 million a year deal. Patrick Chung is a very young and athletic safety. His biggest knock is his injury history. He gets injured about as often as Delmas. If we got Chung, we should use him in limited packages. Julian Edelman can do lots of things on a team, but he has also recently gotten injured. We can really work the slot though. Brian Hartline maybe out of our price range, but he can play. If he had a good QB we'd be talking Wallace Welker range money for him. Dustin Keller isn't an unknown or under the radar guy like some of these other guys, but he can catch and run as good as any of these TEs in the league today. Like I said about Hartline, if Keller had a good QB he'd have numbers better than Hernandez, Gates, even Gonzalez. |
Re: 2013 Free Agents
Buyer beware free agents according to Pro Football Focus.
Cary Williams If reports are to be believed, Williams bet on himself by turning down a three-year, $15 million contract from the Ravens last year. Two postseason interceptions, to go with four in the regular season (along with 11 pass deflections), might suggest that was a wise move from Williams. But watching the tape a little closer doesn't leave you quite as impressed. Williams gave up 39 first downs in the regular season and six more in the postseason, meaning his combined 45 first downs surrendered were the second highest of all cornerbacks. He wasn't a shutdown corner but rather someone teams moved the chains on. He may be looking for top cornerback money, but teams shouldn't be fooled into thinking he is one. Laron Landry On the back of what ended up being a Pro Bowl season, Landry has positioned himself to get paid. He won't be taking a hometown discount with the Jets because in his eyes his stock is at an all-time high after he proved he could handle the rigors of an NFL season by playing 96.6 percent of the Jets' defensive snaps. Only the tape doesn't back up his performance. Eighty-eight tackles represent a big number, but his 4.7 run stop percentage was only 14th among safeties despite his spending 46.2 percent of his snaps in the box. He also got beat for 16 first downs and four touchdowns, the 11th-highest number of all safeties in coverage. Sure Landry can put a big hit on a receiver at times, but don't let those big plays fool you. He's not an elite, difference-making player, and he misses too many tackles (his 13 were 12th highest among safeties). Sean Smith There are times when I watch Smith and think he can be an elite cornerback; there are other times when I watch him and think he shouldn't even be on the field. For proof, no cornerback gave up more combined first downs and touchdowns than Smith's 46. Smith started the season playing well but finished poorly, reminding us how badly he played in 2011 where he had the second-lowest coverage grade of all cornerbacks. Smith is as talented as he is inconsistent, and for that reason teams should be hesitant to part with the big bucks for him. Dustin Keller If you were building an ideal tight end, he'd probably look a lot like Keller: explosive and able to do damage with the ball in his hands. Yet all too often he's not a mismatch, and with the way he blocks, ensuring the Jets can't use him as an every-down tight end, he really needs to be more of a playmaker in the receiving game. This season he picked up only 1.48 yards per route run, a number that if he had run enough routes to qualify would have ranked tied for 15th with Martellus Bennett, a much more complete player. Keller is capable, but there's too much inconsistency in his game for him to be relied upon and given big money. |

If Keller was playing the Patriots every week then yes he would be that good. Gonzalez the last year had the same amount of catches that Keller had the last two years, and Gonzalez is is 36. Keller gets targeted a lot and only comes down with about half his total targets. That is not a good number to have. But the man has always been a little overrated. Unless he is playing the Patriots. Plus TE's have to "run block" something Keller still cannot do well. |

Wilson and Brown are MASSIVE downgrades from Bradshaw....so blame Eli. Osi is on the downside but Canty is still worth keeping. |

Osi is on the downside but Canty is still worth keeping.
Hard to blame Eli. When you get a qb you deem to be your franchise, you are going to pay him, or else someone else will. NO went through that with Brees, Baltimore is going through that with Flacco now, and I extremely hope that we face it with Griffin in a few years. You want your qb to earn that type of contract. But it does require that your cap guys, draft guys and FO are top notch to keep the team in the thick of things a few years into those type of contracts. |

“I think his absence this year really showed up and I think they know that Kerrigan needs somebody on the other end to help anchor for him,” La Canfora said This to me is a tough call. Jackson made some damn good plays last year. |
Re: 2013 Free Agents
Definitely not blaming Eli personally, just his contract. He helped a team with a mediocre season win the SB and did it a second time too. He earned the payday.
However. it was a ridiculous amount that is going to hamper the team going forward. I bet we will have to make this decision with RGIII...because we cannot let him go. Thankfully we won't have to deal with a bogus cap penalty then. |

His cap # is around $3.5 next year so yeah they could reduce that hit with a new deal |
He did but he's not the pass rusher that Rak is. That's the area we really missed him.
Yeah, also Kerrigan damn near disappeared in a few games where he was being double teamed. Having two useful pass rushers would be awesome. I like Jackson dropping into coverage, but not enough to keep him over Rak and certainly not enough to pay him "big" money to be situational |

I was high on him until I read his profootballfocus stats. He's literally a taller DHall. Also his defense/DLine could get pressure on the QB and he still couldn't play long enough coverage. Imagine him here with little pass rush..not good. Now speaking of Dolphin Free Agents, me and that HTTR twitter guy agree on Chris Clemons the FS as a great signing. He's young, goes against Brady every year, and rated as one of the best FSs in the nfl even higher than Byrd. |

Most of the good FA's will be tagged, this FA class is weak IMO, they all count too much against the cap and our cap number has been reduced. So I don't expect the Skins to do much at all in FA. |
