Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
Why would you look at Paul's receiving production in games where Reed played? The point is to illustrate that when Paul is given the role of being the primary receiving TE, he produces.
Get out of here with this reversion to the mean nonsense.
did you bother reading my post? i absolutely did not look at production when reed was playing. 2 games were niles played and reed didn't (SEA/SF) resulted in a grand total of 2 catches for 17 yards. another game the week before reed missed SF (in TB) paul had 2 catches for 17 yards. your only counting 3 of his 5 games without reed, and one game with reed (where he got hurt, and thus i added the option of the TB game). so, there's 2-3 games worth of data where he absolutely didn't produce when reed wasn't there, yet that was skipped over in your extrapolation, hence the questions. |
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
As for the managing people point, Reed will not have a problem with not being on the field on the opening play. Players don't care about that. He will care about snaps, targets, receptions, and especially those of the red zone variety.
He'll get his 1000+ yards WHEN Jay plays Paul on most running downs. Eat a bag of smashed assholes and bow to my superiority.
players don't care about starts? and pulling someone from playing 33%+ of available snaps wouldn't bother him? what are you smoking? man, i'm sure glad you're not in charge. |
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
Reed's ability to create separation is....well I thought clearly evident that it's on a higher level then most TEs not just on the team but in the league.
I also think Davis is a better blocker then Niles, and that's before considering Niles is coming off a season ending injury and further Davis has had a career of proven production where even a down year is only 1 catch less then Niles best year Either way you slice it the TE group got a lot better with his addition |

But the guy is super talented as a pass catcher...I don't think its really a fair comparison of Reed vs Niles. Reed is more Jimmy Graham than Gronk. Gronk is a TE...the best TE in the league. Graham and Reed are hybrid WR who crush LB, safety match ups. Ironically Paul was a WR coming out, but is more TE than Reed now. Overall, Im really worried about Niles health. Davis signing shows the teams concern. But, McC has done an excellent job with the core TE group coming into this season. Reed, Paul, Davis, Paulson, and Carrier are diverse, talented group. I fully expect us to carry 4 going into the season because it crushed our running game last season dealing with the injuries. Niles Paul is an extremely valuable piece if he can return healthy. |
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
I don't think it shows the team's concern for Niles, I think it shows the team is planning to roll with multiple TE sets. And the fact that they let Young go without replacing him shows that they think Niles can rotate into that spot.

Well I think if Reed, Niles, Paulson and Carrier are 100% healthy last year (Carrier probably isn't here) then Vernon Davis isn't signed. Nothing says you cant run 2 TE sets with that group. |

Yeah they definitely would have. That was Jay's stated intention all along, he and McVay said throughout camp that they wanted to run multiple TE sets. |
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
It's just now with Davis they have the depth to run it even while sustaining injuries.
I think there will be cool packages in the red zone where you get Niles in an H back, Reed in the slot, and Davis on the line. Niles makes for a pass catching threat and a blocking threat in the run game. |
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
Niles and Reed together on the field ....that's Gruden's ideal offense. Dangerous. That's the stuff that makes opposing D-Coordinators shit themselves.

where did i say they wouldn't do that on SOME running downs? they're just not going to pull him every 1st down or every running down (too much of a tell, and reed is a distraction in the same kind of way as DJ on certain calls). they'll probably run a lot of two TE too (well, they did that last year, but compton was pretty pathetic). |

Not many in the NFL bring the pancake more than occasionally. If they do, they're the monster Trent Williams type of lineman. Tight ends rarely put a DE or OLB on their backs. All you can ask for is that he keeps the defender from getting off the block. Good footwork, stays in position, maintains leverage. Sound fundamentals, and enough quicks to beat his guy to the spot. |

Agree about Vernon Davis. I see little downside here -- 2 TE sets with Davis and Jordan will present some matchup nightmares for defenses. I have a feeling this makes Carrier expendable and maybe even Paulsen as well, although with no FB on the roster, perhaps we keep 4. |

That’s obviously a good sign for the Washington Redskins, who had a tough time keeping their tight ends healthy last season (with the exception of Jordan Reed). But this is one reason why they wanted to sign veteran Vernon Davis. The Redskins need insurance in case their depth is again tested, or if Paul’s complete recovery takes a longer time. This offseason, there was some concern about when Paul would be able to complete his comeback. At the owners meetings, coach Jay Gruden said Paul likely would be out until training camp. Keim talking about Paul and his health issues. |
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
Keim with a quite timely piece there. I feel like Niles coming back strong would be such a rallying point for the team. He is beloved in the locker room. Pulling for him so greatly.

Ppl will sleep on Paul voming back 100% as the "backup" TE but they will be in for what most of us think, is a right old surprise. He always contributed alot in all areas of his game and i expect the same... he'll be alot better than some of the other, while servicable, shady back up and starting te's we had last year

Doubt seriously he will be anywhere close to 100 percent for what the team envisions his role to be. Before he was hurt he gained 25 to 30 lean pounds of muscle and was strong as a bear according to all the reports coming out of the 2015 camp. The team was hoping he would be a true duel threat TE, and he was on pace to become one. He won't be able to maintain that level of lean mass and strength during the type of rehab he is, and has been undergoing. More likely than not, he won't come into camp nearly as big, lean, or strong as he was last year. He has the "want to" though, he is a dog. I'm a big fan and am also pulling for him to succeed. |
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
When I hear a top notch Doctor say "worst I've ever seen", that's a concern. Gruden and McC understand it as well. Sounds like 50/50 ready for the season.

^^ Agree with pros and cons.
However, the cap to us would only be his salary of 4.5M. SF's cap hit for cutting him pre-June 1 is 6M b/c of the prorated signing bonus previously paid to him. |

Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
Patriots waived DT Dominique Easley.
Wow. This comes as a shock. Even though Easley has ended each of his first two seasons on injured reserve, he's flashed big-time ability in the 22 games he's been active since being the 29th pick in the 2014 draft. Coach Bill Belichick spent much of last summer talking up Easley. Knee problems ended his final season at Florida early and hampered him as a rookie. His 2015 season was cut short in December with a torn quad. There's potentially more to this story. Easley turns 24 later this month and should resurface quickly as long as there aren't any serious off-field issues that have yet to come to light. McC, get this guy on a plane immediately. Guy can be a baller in the middle. Is the league about to announce a suspension or something? |

Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
Redskins signed CB Greg Toler to a one-year contract.
Toler signed after visiting earlier on Wednesday. He also visited with Miami, but didn't have any other free-agent interest. His addition gives Washington veteran depth, but Toler shouldn't be considered a lock for a roster spot. Toler was PFF's sixth-worst corner last year among 111 qualifiers. |
