It may be true, but Florio is notoriously wrong, and this could simply be KC pushing his leverage to the hilt for a long term deal.

Or it could be the ongoing saga that is the skins fan's life.
That's most likely the case. It's possible he's using it as one more step to help him get out the door. But more likely he's doing this so that the tag value of $24M gets baked into actuality. When your starting point in a negotiation is $24M guaranteed over one year, it gives you more leverage than when you don't have $24M guaranteed over one year.

After signing the tag he'll be one step closer to a 3rd tag worth $34M, which puts insane amounts of leverage in his court.

I think he and his agent are conducting what is probably the perfect contract negotiation.

Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread

JLC thinks he'll sign the tag, and then sign an extension by July 15. He seems to think he wants to be a Redskin but is looking to drive max value from the process.

I trust JLC over Jason Reid.

Oh, come on, clearly if he's in Montana, he's looking at signing with a CFL team!!

edit: and does anyone else find it strange that a buffalo barbecue joint from Montana only has restaurants east of the Mississippi (I'm ignoring Colorado). IF ONLY we had a bbq expert on the Warpath to let us know how their food really is!!!

Negative on both accounts. Teds is in Gaithersburg (DTC) not Bethesda.

One in Gaithersburg has no rotating door, nor a giant bison on top. Time for me to go back to work now.

Sounds like the best ever situation to be in if you're an agent trying to get your client max dollars. Cousins is going to be rolling in the money one way or another. I keep trying to figure out what's going on with the negotiations, and the only thing I do know is that we will know, beyond a shadow of doubt by July 15th. Other than that, it's kind of fun to sit and speculate what's going to happen.

I'm thinking the team does want to sign him long term - that's probably their first option. But seeing as how Cousins' agent probably wants the team to sweat and wants to make sure that Cousins gets $24M guaranteed this year, he's going to force the tag before he entertains any offers. Now the kicker, IMO, will be which tag he gets. I think the non-exclusive would mean the team has some doubt that they would be willing to offer Cousins enough of what he wants, and they're getting ready to at least make sure they don't leave the table empty-handed. The exclusive probably means it's all a formality - they plan on giving Cousins the max of what he wants this year and it's all about just working out the rest of the deal for the next few years.

Best case scenario is that they already have a great deal worked out to where there would be no reason to wait until March 1st to tag and extend negotiations. That's what I hope happens, but probably the least likely at this point.

Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread

I'd be more sad if we lost Garcon than if we lost Cousins. Not because of who is better or who is more important, he's just my favorite Redskins player and he has done everything asked of him. He deserves a nice contract from us. He's still playing well too. He's our Anquan Boldin.

I wish I could just ask Kirk...Do you want to be a Redskins but also want as much money as possible or are you trying to drive up your price so high you force their hand in letting you go because you don't really want to play here.

Either way it looks like he's getting franchised and this whole thing could drag all the way out to July 15th. Ugh!

Schneed10 02-21-2017 11:45 AM

Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread

Yeah we won't know until July 15. The $ value the Redskins offer will eventually get out. If we hear that they're topping out at $18M and Cousins gets away from us the next year because of it, then we know who we'll be angry at. Likewise, if we hear that the offers are coming in $22M or $23M per year, and Cousins turns it down and ultimately gets away because of it, then we know who we'll be angry at.

I'll be more pissed at the 'Skins if they lowball him again than I would if Cousins just flat wants out. But I'd be pissed about either. Real pissed.

2 mottos as Skins fans:

1. There's always next year; and
2. Never easy

This falls into the latter.

There are 4 options at this point and I'm fine with 3 of them and 100% against 1. I'm OK with the non exclusive tag and hoping some team signs him, signing him to a long term deal and keeping him, or signing and trading him. I do not want him playing out the year for us on the franchise tag.

If that happens, there will be only two possible reasons:

1) the Redskins lowballed him again with unreasonably low contract offers
2) Cousins got a decent offer but turned it down because he flat doesn't want to be here

We'll know at that point. If July 15 passes without a deal, he's as good as gone.

I wish I could psyche my brain into forgetting about football until July 16th. I could read about who we drafted at that time and have this situation be settled.

In a simple world we meet in the middle for 5 years 115 million and move on to building the rest of the team. A man can dream.
Well, it wouldn't be anything less. The standard compensation are the two first round picks. The Redskins don't have to negotiate in this instance. Now if the team has something else that appears to be "equal value" in the Redskins' eyes, say a star defensive player and some lower round picks or a couple defensive players, then the Redskins could negotiate a deal like that. But, they don't have to take anything less than the two first round picks.
Are you 100% sure about that?

The way I understood it from Cooley and Kevin's show is the 2 first rounders are the starting point of the negotiation, in a non-exclusive tag where the Redskins don't match an offer made by a team, but if this team says "we won't give more than a first and a second, take that or keep KC" I think it's up to the Redskins to decide what they want to do...

How wrong am I?

As far as I know, it can be negotiated, but if it's not 2 1st, It would need to be like a 1st 2nd and 3rd in this draft to even think about it.

That's what I understand when I read about the tags' rules online, but I'm pretty sure Cooley said no team would actually give up 2 first rounders... maybe I misunderstood his point...

You're understanding it as if the new team holds all the cards and has the power over negotiation. They don't. In fact, there doesn't have to be any negotiation at all. If San Fran offers a contract to Cousins, the Redskins decide not to match, then if Cousins agrees and signs, San Fran has to give up their two first round picks. They don't get an option to negotiate unless the Redskins are willing to negotiate another deal. It's basically defaulted as two first round picks unless otherwise negotiated. That's how the league has set it up.

If a team says they're not giving up their first rounders, well, they don't get Kirk Cousins. It's not that the Redskins necessarily want to get rid of Cousins, but if another team is willing to outbid the 'skins, then they are not getting rid of him and leaving empty-handed.

I'm just like everybody else here which is I have no idea what is going on in the house of mirrors known as Redskins Park. After 18 years of Dan Snyder running the show, making one major mistake after another, there is no telling what he may do with Kirk.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Snyder blows up the entire re-build after only two seasons. He probably thinks we can plug in a Rookie QB and win big, just like his big brother Jerry did. So, of course I'm nervous about retaining Kirk!

I don't know, I am as skeptical about the Post's Redskin reporting as much as it's other media information. There is a telling 4 paragraph bit near the end, that says this is mostly just a blatantly negative nancy report:
It would help public confidence if McCloughan could share his vision for improving the defense and tweaking an offense on the verge of greatness. But he’s being pushed to the background right now, under fire to have a great draft and free agency after a lackluster showing last year.

In the big picture, that’s not a terrible thing. Many NFL GMs talk as little as possible. But with Washington, there is always more to the story, and this time, it’s an admission of what many of what many hoped wouldn't be true.

For all his talent, McCloughan is limited in what he can do within this organization. He took a job with an inflated title at a time when he had little negotiating leverage because of past mistakes. Although he has made an impact, it’s hard to be a savior under those conditions.

It was a fairytale that couldn’t last: A troubled yet genius talent evaluator joins the NFL’s most arrogantly inept franchise, redeems himself, resurrects the team’s past glory and skips off into the sunset, having changed the hearts and minds of many. That’s how hope embellished the possibilities.
I added the bolded emphasis. I believe that the Skins have gotten their past leaks under control, so the news media doesn't have much to go on so they revert to their inherent dislike for the Skins under Snyder. (pretty sure Cleveland the most inept franchise)

That said, if BA has moved in to a Vinnie Cerrato type role where he really is undermining Scot and JG, then this off-season will be the tell-tale sign like Schneed pointed out.
