Breaking things down to the simplest means:

If Kirk Cousins is not the QB of this team after this season, then who is?
And does this move make the team better?

Skins just need to move on if they don't sign him. Nobody is going to give up 2 first rounders for the guy with 2018 being a bumper crop for quarterbacks in the draft. Skins fans are now in the position to almost hope the 2017 season blows to lower Kirks asking price, but then again, we might not want him if that happens. The front office really screwed this up!!!!

There are a few posts, here and there, on this thread (and other threads) saying "If he had a better game against......" -or- "Cousins can't win the big games....." etc etc etc.

Ok. So let him go. Get rid of him.

Then what? Who ya' got lining up under center?
That is the point I was trying to make.

Well. Here we are the final weekend of negotiations for KC and the Skins. Bruce Allen can earn his money if he gets it right. I am still feeling optimistic that they get a deal done. It just is not rocket science.

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag

I want to make it clear that I don't think this is a big cluster **** because the Skins haven't yet signed Kirk to a LTD. It is a CF because of the inability of someone in the organization to make a yes or no decision on Kirk. And this is after they have worked with him everyday for over five years? That's ridiculous! Meanwhile, they have stupidly guaranteed him $43,000,000 for only two years work. I just don't get this at all. It is bad business, IMO.

Now, I'm guessing, they are trying to recoup some if this money by low-balling Kirk in the negotiations for a LTD. That isn't going to work. It doesn't belong on the table because there is nothing to discuss. Kirk already has that money. It's gone. They might as well forget about it. The only possible topic for discussion is a contract extension at or near the current market rate with a substantial guarantee.

Supposedly, the ultimate team goal is to win a Super Bowl. If they believe they can win a SB with Kirk at QB, then they should stop screwing around and pay him the market rate on a LTD. If they don't, they should try to trade him now. If they still can't decide, then they are bunch of clowns who shouldn't be running a lemonade stand on the front sidewalk.

It is the epitome of stupidity to either continue to pay a fortune to a QB you don't believe in or to refuse to pay the going rate to lock up a QB who you believe can take you all the way once the team is built around him.

My concerns are this.both O coordinators that Kirk has had (mcvay and Young Shanny) have both been hired as head coaches..which tells me folks around league really think high of them..so Kirk had the luxury of having two world class O coordinators and one could argue a very very good if not elite WR/TE group ..Gruden likes the short high percentage play so all in all there were many factors involved in Kirks success ..I have watched every snap Cousins has ever played for Skins and I am not sure who Cousins is..could he be great? sure but I also believe a lot of his success was coaches/system/players etc.. To make him the highest paid QB would be a stretch in my opinion..why would he not play for 20 million a year for 5 year deal with a bonus clause that every year the team wins 10 games he gets 5 million bonus.. is that not the goal to get in the playoffs?? once in anything can happen. So if Cousins is so dang sure of himself he should be able to get skins into playoffs say 3 out of next 5 years..that would be 115 million dollar deal. sounds like to me he wants out and test the market ..serves him right if he ends up on a crap team like Cleveland,jets,49ers,rams ...

I ain't tryna be no debbie downer or nothin, but he's had 7 years to earn his money. If KC gets signed, congrats BA, you bought yourself some time. If he doesn't get signed BA can go fuck himself with a rusty spoon. You ain't sniffin the Lombardi in 2017+ if you don't have a reliable qb at minimum. I guess these last 2 years made people get amnesia about the previous 25.

Correction: "to make him the highest paid QB for one season"

Next year plenty of QBs will have new contracts...

And by the way, is Derek Carr really the best QB in the league? I don't think so. He was just in a position to get this money, and word is he could have asked for more!

Contracts aren't grades, it's not a ranking, they are the result of a business negotiation, in a market.

The only decision to be made here is a decision on the player. I think Dan Snyder would gladly pay market rate for a QB he truly believed could take his team to the Super Bowl.

I feel that if the Redskins, like you, are still not sure about him after all these years, then they should force themselves to make a "no" decision, trade him and move on. Unlike you, they don't have the luxury of not making a decision on him. They should not risk strapping themselves with a huge contract for the wrong player. Teams that are stuck in the middle of the road on a QB decision eventually get run over.

The very idea of wanting to pay Kirk mid-tier money because they think he ranks as a mid-tier QB works against the primary team goal of winning a Super Bowl. They must not get confused by the numbers. It's all about the player.

I would have no problem with a definite "yes" or a definite "no". I would have a big problem with a continuation of "maybe".

The problem with losing cousins isn't so much losing but the drop off of talent below him. If he is level 7 say, the next available level is 4 currently in the NFL. This league really is hurting with quality of qp play.

I agree. Thing is the major college programs have to really simplify their offensive schemes for the boneheads that they recruit or the system just won't work in the NFL where the speed between the offense and defense are at a parity.

I don't think the dropoff between Kirk and Colt is drastic. We could still win games with Colt in there.

Wonder if Cousins would take a 4 year extension at his franchise tag amount, with all his money still guaranteed this year and half the next 4 also guaranteed. So that would be approximately 96 more million with 48 more million guaranteed.

Win games yes.

But with Kirk Cousins and just an average defense, we can do a LOT more than win games!

Even with our redzone issues and kicker who had a pretty awful year, we were 12th in scoring!

With an improved defense and a taller receiver group, we are not just about winning some games... if we keep KC.

Deal doesn't go through draft the kid from Wyoming with our first round pick, even if we have to trade up. If Kirk doesn't take the deal or one is not offered he will bolt. One good thing about 2017 is he will try to play lights out to sweeten the deal he will get after it is all said and done. If no deal is done, I say he most likely bolts regardless of what we offer him.

One thought: if we are not able to sign an efficient QB we drafted in the 4th round... how are we going to be able to sign an efficient QB we drafted in the first? Wouldn't that hypothetical player be even more expensive?

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag

This is bullshit. The guy has been a great teammate (sat behind RGIII without compliant probably knowing he was a lot better), improved in the one area that was a deficit - turnovers, broke franchise records in consecutive years (and with little help in the run game), and has done everything asked of him. We haven't had a QB like him in ages. If they squander this opportunity, they're idiots. With a middling D last year, that offense could have done some damage in the playoffs. And with the cap going up as it does, 3 years from now what it would take to keep him won't look bad.

And for those thinking we can plug in Colt or just draft a QB, I ask you how well that mentality has worked in the last quarter century.

I wish this franchise would stop getting in its own way. It's infuriating.

I can't help but feel KC bears a lot of the blame. If- as your tweet by Schefter says - he is willing to talk after the season then he should have been willing to sign this off season but he is using the FT to the hilt and trusts our line is going to keep him from a season ending injury. If the Skins offered anywhere near market value there is no reason KC should not have signed.

Kirk is throwing away the security of a long term deal by not compromising with the team, IMO.

I doubt the team is lowballing him, but any long term deal is WAY better than being on the franchise tag from year to year.

He's being all business, and so is the team. I just don't get why either he or his agent, don't see the value of a security of a long term deal.

But whatever, this is a "win now" league and the team has him for the upcoming season. And I guess that's what matters for now.
