I really hate to be overly critical because he did have a great game, but I still do cringe almost every time he throws that ball. It's such a floater. I would just as soon not see him throw another out pattern, because it's only a matter of time before it is a pick-6. Honestly, I feel he is more lucky than good, but I hope the luck continues.
I agree with you, guy is a flash in the pan |
Re: Taylor Effing Heinicke
Makes me laugh when people are so quick to judge on a small sample size. It's clear from his physical talents he's capable of being a good #2 but he won't be a long term starter anywhere. However, to judge whether he's worth keeping around long term as a fixture @ #2 lets give him more than a little over 1/2 a season to show what he can do shall we?
|
Re: Taylor Effing Heinicke
The question of him being a good backup was answered long ago for me. He's clearly earned a spot in this league as a backup at the very least. I think the question now is can he be a lower level starter? With the way he's played lately against some very good defenses he seems well on his way to answering that question too.

I have zero issue with him being our number 2 guy but I wouldn't go crossing off QB as one of the Redskins needs right now. |
Re: Taylor Effing Heinicke
I think he is good enough that we can stop bringing in aging Vet QBs to be the answer ..I’m all in for drafting a QB but please enough of the endless carousel of What we have done in past .

No need to dick around with retreads like Mariota or Trubisky.

How would you address that need in 2022? The draft is weak and using a 1st round pick would be a risk and bad risk at that. Rodgers? I can see that but that would be an all in move to win now. The downside of that trade would be expense and if it failed would wreck the team yet again for a few years - but unlike the draft would be a fairly good risk. |

Are you all in for reaching for a QB in the 1st (because any QB taken in the 1st will be a reach)? Lets put it this way if Haskins, or Lock were coming out in 2022 They'd be ranked higher than any of the 2022 QB prospects. |
Re: Taylor Effing Heinicke
Given the limited options for QBs next year and assuming that Wilson & Rodgers do not want to play for WFT, I think there will be a good chance we continue to add pieces to the team and roll with Heinicke. In 2023, we should have a solid team, which will afford us the opportunity to trade up for a QB if there is one we like in the 2023 draft.

I don't think anybody is saying he's the franchise QB. But he can buy us some time and give us flexibility going forward, that's all. |
Re: Taylor Effing Heinicke
I should say nobody is calling him the franchise QB right at this moment. If he keeps playing like he has been who knows where this conversation may be in a few more weeks lol.
|
Re: Taylor Effing Heinicke
I'd agree roll with him into next season and don't look for another vet. Certainly don't trade for one even if AR is available. I'd go BPA in the draft and see if one of the top 2022 QB's is available when we draft in Rd 2 or 3. Or maybe trade down from our rd1 spot to accumulate capital for the likelihood of trading up for a QB in 2023. The other luxury of having Heinicke as the incumbent #1 is we can draft a lower round QB project and if that fails we don't lose much. Definitely don't reach in Rd 1 or 2!

Yeah, I keep forgetting that the dude only has 10 NFL starts. |
Re: Taylor Effing Heinicke
Hopefully we avoid another Kirk situation.
I'd jump of the Coronado bridge if they have to franchise this guy because they went into 2022 season with a wait and see attitude. If he is the guy, you extend his contract at the end of the season. If he is just another Colt McCoy type backup(Colt had a big win yesterday against SEA), you extend him for modest money and draft QBs till you get it right. Heinicke is an awesome player at $1m per year and I would love to have him as a backup. |

Short term, TH needs to continue to improve/work on the following: - Accuracy - Decision making - Playing his role For the long term, if he's to become a franchise QB, he needs to show he can throw the deep ball (we have way too much talent at receiver to have that limitation) and to be able to put the team on his back when needed. I'm cautiously optimistic about him right now, I believe he's trending in the right direction, and having a strong running game has been a huge lift for him. |
Re: Taylor Effing Heinicke
Thing is with Heineke his situation is weird. Nobody ever heard of him until he came in end of last year. He looked real good. Went through the next offseason as the presumed backup and boom - once again thrown in the fire. After 9 starts he is playing well again.
The ONLY knock on him after the playoff game last year was durability. I kept saying he was being bought in cold and it was contributing to his injuries. Now that he is in rythm/ game shape/ better understanding of the offense durability hasn’t even been uttered once. If this was a true rookie we would be absolutely ecstatic right now. For all intensive purposes he is one, only he is more mature. You never hear about anything negative with this guy as far as work ethic, or off the field nonsense. If he plays at this level for the rest of the year and stays healthy I see no need to crown him King of the backups. Wouldn’t even be interested in reaching for a quarterback. Take one late if you see promise than draft him …as a backup with potential for starting down the road. But right now Im extremely comfortable with TH. |
Re: Taylor Effing Heinicke
He's limited, arm talent just isn't there... He is able to make plays though and seems to be clutch so I'll take that over a guy like Cousins who has a solid arm and accurate but usually folds

Not every good quarterback has a cannon. I dont think TH has a noodle arm. I think he definitely needs to continue to work on his mechanics. Will help his deep ball. I don’t think the limitations there are overwhelming. |

Im trying to stay medium w Heinike. Yesterday was his best pocket passer game imo. Didnt rack up the yards, aided by a run game but he was making quicker on time throws. There were only a few drop backs where he froze with indecision. For the most part, it seems like we ran the plays in our weekly game plan for the first time this year. Happy to see Heinike being coachable. I honestly didnt think he would improve his game and thought hed go back and do even more backyard football .. but he hasnt. Hopefully these past 2 games arent just blips. |
Re: Taylor Effing Heinicke
Heinicke is balling right now.
We still absolutely need to draft a QB in 2022. He plays near this level the rest of the season, it doesn't necessarily have to be in the 1st round. But we need a young guy to develop. Signing Heinicke to 2 years instead of just 1 is looking genius now tho. Glad he is locked up for at least 1 more year. I'd be down with extending him after the season. Especially since any drafted guy would be on a rookie contract. |
Re: Taylor Effing Heinicke
Nit pick the guy after a W bc im an asshole .. pulling a haskins and throwing off the back foot unnecessarily.
Had Terry for an easy TD toss with about 4 mins left in the 4th but just back footed it for phantom pressure and threw a bad ball. Panthers playing at a C level had a chance to win it even though we were playing at a B level. |

But he played about perfect, including getting us into FG range, before that pass. So I won't hold it against him. Typically though, you gotta have that 1. But defense locked up the W. |
Re: Taylor Effing Heinicke
He's balled out the past two weeks against two very good defenses. Not sure what else we can ask at this point.

My only complaint with Heinicke at the moment is that occasionally he has these plays where he freezes and takes the sack because he isn't decisive enough. |

Makes me laugh when people criticize someone for a post then write the exact same post that made them laugh but with their spin. What do you think you are doing! lol Your taking a small sample size and making a judgement that it is CLEAR he isnt a long term starter! Also realize not all of us have a small sample size some of us watched him up close for 4 years. Sure the odds are he isnt the long term elite starter or for that matter just an average long term starter because it is difficult. But realize any point you make that he isnt someone can make a point that they think he is at this point. The only thing your looking at is arm strength because he has some elite physical skills other then the arm. What makes me laugh is so many posters get hung up on arm strength. I keep hearing accuracy and mention of missed throws, sorry the 66% completion dont support that conclusion. So much more then just arm strength goes into being a good QB, so much more! |

He could be the long term solution - but in order for that to happen he has to be consistently above-average. The last two weeks is a good start but he needs to keep it going. And if he goes into next season as the starter and regresses again he loses all that goodwill he got from this year. |
Re: Taylor Effing Heinicke
I couldn’t figure out who Taylor looked like, but I placed it today. TH looks like a short Chipper Jones. Lil Chip

Re: Taylor Effing Heinicke
If TH keeps playing well, or his play keeps trending upward then it makes things real difficult this offseason. You still have to draft a QB no matter what. The question is - when?

One thing I'd eliminate right off the bat is drafting a QB in the 1st under any circumstances (Even if we had no QBs at all on the roster going into the draft) - that would be a waste of draft capital given the QB talent in the 2022 draft. |
Re: Taylor Effing Heinicke
I wouldn't count it out. If you want the best QB, you might have to get him in the first. My guess is there will be more than one QB taken in the first round, even if the assessment is that it's a weak QB class.

Re: Taylor Effing Heinicke
I want to see how he looks by years end. He had some bad games going into the bye then 2 good games out of it.
He has 2 major issues imo. Reading/anticipation and arm strength. Read and throwing with anticipation - this is something that can be improved on with coaching and time. These past 2 games he starting to get the ball out on time to the correct intended receiver. Will this continue or will he revert back to hold, hesitate then scramble. medium to deep throws - this is something he cant improve on. His arm is limited. it does effect our play book. Any long air balls are 50/50 lobs to Terry (or he throws it out of bounds). He was bottom 5 in air yard per completion coming into the bye, now hes middle of the pack. he can hit some medium throws. I want to see how the season plays out but right now Im doubtful and dont think he will be in the league in 2-3 years. |
Re: Taylor Effing Heinicke
There’s no place that’s more apparent during this mini-surge for Washington, now 4-6 and one game out of the wild-card spot, than Heinicke’s red zone production.
Washington’s offense moved the ball into opposing territory frequently during its recent four-game losing streak, but labored converting promising drives into points. Heinicke completed 7 of 16 passes with zero touchdown passes and two interceptions. Out of 33 quarterbacks, only Jared Goff, the starter for the winless Lions, had a lower QB rating than Heinicke’s 11.5. Since Week 10, Heinicke has completed 6 of 7 passes, including three for touchdowns with scoring strikes of 6 and 12 yards at Carolina. His 130.1 rating in that span topped all quarterbacks with at least two appearances (entering Monday night). The Athletic |
