If you really listen to Ron's interview yesterday you can see he isn't 100% sold on SH and none of us are.. He said "He could be our guy" He said that last yr before trading for Wentz...

I don't buy anything he says

Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread

He's a 5th round QB who has played in a handful of preseason games and started one NFL game. While he looked fine, there's absolutely no reason for Ron to be 100% sold on Howell. Ron saying Howell "could" be the guy is about as factual as you can get.
I'm with you and MTK on this one.

He doesn't call the plays in KC. He hasn't proven anything really. He hasn't been offered an NFL Head Coaching job because of that (and maybe bad interviews). That offense's success is all Andy. Having learned under him for the last nine years has to count for something though.

He needs to get out of Andy's shadow and prove that he can be successful. Coming here with a defensive Head Coach, a top 10 defense, and all these weapons at his disposal would be a good move in my opinion. However, if I were him, I wouldn't consider it unless RR lays out a meaningful plan for the O-line and QB.
Have to wonder too if he's been with Andy for 9 years, why are they not renewing his contract. It's not like the offense is struggling, and while it's mostly Andy's offense, why don't they want EB back??

Chief X_Phackter 02-09-2023 12:34 PM

Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread

If you ask me, I think overwhelmingly it's because they realize he needs to go somewhere else to move his career forward. Yeah, they could bring him back and he can work under Andy inevitably, but it doesn't appear as though that is getting him anywhere.

Plenty of legit question marks about EB which makes me really wonder if he's a legit quality candidate or not. If he came here I'd be in wait and see mode on him.

I don't know if I'm making a good comparison. But I think about Josh McDaniels, being under Bellichick shadows, in a team with a great QB (when Brady was in NE), and how he never got the scrutiny that EB seems to get. Hell, McDaniels had a terrible stint as a coach his first time around, and that didn't stop the Raiders from hiring him.

Rons interview on John Keims newest podcast is a must listen. Ron gives even more detail on Sam Howell and good info on the coordinator search.

I think the difference between the two situations is BB wasn't calling the offensive plays, McDaniels was. In KC it appears that AR is calling the plays, and while EB is obviously involved, his specific role isn't all that clear. He's definitely not autonomous, so how much credit does he deserve for the success of that offense?

Ron has to be well aware that with new ownership coming in - if he doesn't build a contender this year it will be his last year here. The seat is very hot.

I see Josh Harris toured the Commies practice facility the other week - per The Athletic.

Maybe. I definitely don't see a change before the season starts; and if they are competitive enough, or happen to make the playoffs, or win the Division, RR isn't going anywhere.

Whoever that supposed potential owner was, who knows if he/they will even be the new owner. If so, S Payton's not available anymore. Just sounds like someone simply doing their due diligence, putting out their feelers...if it's true.

If Ron made the playoffs/won the division/broke our 20 year drought of winning 11 or more games and the new owner still fired him because he didn't like him - I would really have to question the wisdom of the new owner.

That’s a really over simplified look at things.
Ron just isn’t a winning coach.
He’s never had back to back winning seasons even with a MVP at QB.

He just isn’t the guy.

Btw Mike Tomlin has never had a losing season in 16 years.

Ron is, by all standards, just an absolutely awful HC. The guy is very fortunate to have been employed as one for all these years.

Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread

The teams (and coaches) that struggle to win, or have back to back winning seasons, are the teams (and coaches) who have been unable to find a better than average QB, or get better than average play from their QB. The QB makes all the difference.

Ron had Cam Newton for nine seasons. Three of those seasons he had injury issues. They went to the playoffs four times. The other two seasons were his first two years on the league.

Ultimately Ron's W/L record isn't that great, and he has to own it. I just think it's too easy to call him a bad coach by looking at just the record, and not taking into account everything that contributed to that, or acknowledging the great seasons he was able to put together when he had the pieces, and a good healthy QB.

9 out of 12 seasons losing records. Well 8-1/2 or whatever. Hasn’t had a winning season in 6 years? Thats all i gotta know. Every HC has obstacles. Most do not get passes for as long as he has Chief.

I totally get what you are saying. I don't necessarily disagree, like I said he has to own his record. All I am saying is, name me an NFL head coach with a consistently good W/L record, who didn't also have consistently great quarterback play for that time period. They go hand in hand.

Look at Bill Bellichick & Sean Payton after losing their Hall of Famer QBs.

BB is probably the best defensive schemer of all time. Payton probably had as much to do with Brees as Brees did. Great coaches always bring something to the table. My problem with Ron is I’m not sure what he brings.
He isn’t great with personnel. He certainly isn’t great with time management. He just isn’t a good in game coach period. He isn’t even good with the press. Throws people under the bus constantly. I just feel like he is there collecting a check because he is well liked and a good dude. I don’t know. I still hope he is shit canned before next year once the sale is finalized. I know he won’t be but I hope he is.

Forget having a great quarterback that makes you look good for a second, I get that. What does Ron do well other than being a nice guy? I think any success we have on D is 100 percent attributed to JDR.

Chief X_Phackter 02-13-2023 12:59 PM

Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread

Well to be fair he did bring in JDR. So we can give him credit for that right?

He may very well be a terrible head coach, and if you are solely judging him on his win / loss record, then I can see how you can come to that conclusion. His players seem to love him though, and I don't believe it's just because he's a good guy. He has made some questionable personnel decisions and has yet to find "the guy" at the QB position, but no one talks about the good personnel decisions, or that he has tried to bring a QB here. CW was a long shot and last resort, but he tried for Stafford, Rodgers, Wilson, friggin' Mahomes, drafted Howell....

No Head Coach is batting 1.000 with regard to personnel decisions, and over half the league is trying to find their QB.

Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread

Why are the Eagles better than us? They have drafted QB's. They drafted Wentz, he played well for them, flamed out, then they went ahead and drafted someone else when Wentz was the entrenched starter. That is the difference. They had to balls to draft a QB in the 2nd round when they already had a guy whom they paid.

I keep saying it but you simply have to draft Qb's just about every year. Even when you have a starter you take them.

Hurts has come a long way. He is now a legit top half of the league starter. I didn't think it would happen but he has proved a lot of people wrong.

So until we can get a GM in here who has that way of thinking it really doesn't matter. It is a QB driven league and if you can get that guy then that is the way and the only way you have long term success.

Rons a good Head Coach imo but hes a leader of men type, not an Xs and Os.

Needs a good OC, DC and QB.

Fans can shit on Ron ... but 8-8-1 this year was a pretty damn good job all things considered

Orlando Brown Jr is available to the highest bidder. Some big time FA want the money but also location. He seems like he is CREAM mind set, which is good for us if interested which I dont think we will be, conservative moves while ownership is figured out

-----

Chiefs have a weird payroll on paper for next year, IM sure it will get massaged. 7m cap space next year but really top heavy

Mahomes 49M cap hit
Clark 28 (invisible in SB)
Jones 28 (invisible in SB)
Thunney a fucking Guard 22

Kelce 14
Reid 12
Valdes-Scanting 11

then a guy at 5, 2 guys at 3 .. rest of team is under 3M

https://overthecap.com/salary-cap/kansas-city-chiefs

We have 8m but once we cut Carson, we will have 34 M in cap

Allen highest cap hit at 21M
7 guys making btw 10-13M
10 guys making btw 3-9M

https://overthecap.com/salary-cap/washington-commanders

Things will change but that is some serious disparity

Yes .. if we were interested in legit taking a chance at winning in the next 1-3 years. Allen and McLaurin will be 28 when the next season starts. Carr would be the first somewhat capable QB we have brought in since Alex Smith. Fitz and Wentz were always long shot consolation prizes that we knew probably wouldnt work out.

With the ownership issues it seems like we wont be making a play for one of the 4 first round graded QBs ... so we just punt on the 2024 season before it ever starts .. thinking being smart and conservative in 2024 somehow sets up for 2025 season

Loser talk .. thinking next year will be different. Next year wont be different if we dont get a legit QB.
Could imagine the loser offense of Derek Carr and Greg Roman? Lol
Yeah youre right.

What was I thinking .. how could a perennial top 15 QB possibly help this bottom 10 offense. Check his stats past 5 years. Even in this down year hes 14th QBR. 2021 he threw for 4,804 yds.

This fanbase turning its nose up on Carr bc hes not a Burrow or Mahomes .. it blows my mind. Reminds me of the Kirk Cousins when fans balked at paying the going rate for a top 15 QB .. because hes wasnt Aaron Rodgers.

Functional franchise 31 year old QBs dont hit the open market often ... we are a QB starved franchise with WR weapons and a D ..... but we think we get to be picky and turn down an 8 because we are waiting for a big tittied but not fat bombshell 10 to magically appear in our life and say "this, this franchise with a horrible owner, horrible field, horrible organization the last 2 decades, zero track record of success in almost 30 years .. I chose you Commanders!"

Funny part .. all the fans clamoring for Howell and not Carr will be screaming for Rons head half way through the season if Howell plays like a 5th rounder.

C'est la vie.

We learned nothing from the Cousins saga.

SunnySide 02-14-2023 11:41 AM

Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread

But .. Carr makes us better, increases our chances at playoffs but wont make us a perennial contender so whats the point. Hed probably keep us floating in mediocrity purgatory which is they worst, weve been in it for years now.

My wish? Just tank next year. Loss every game accidently on purpose.

Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread

Now that Carr is gonna be a FA, he's on my same level as Jimmy G. Better than Wentz and Heinicke, and likely Howell. Wouldn't be my preference, but I wouldn't hate signing him either. Both are getting starter money, so if they're here, they're starting.
