Re: What's Wrong with the Redskins?
We've drafted guys like Ladell Betts, Rock Cartright, Jason Campbell, Chris Cooley, Derrick Dockery, Rocky McIntosh, Carlos Rogers, Sean Taylor, Laron Landry, Chris Horton, Kedric Golston and Anthony Montgomery and found numerous UFA gems. Now, Chris Horton might not be Sean Taylor, but he's a damn good pickup for a 7th rounder. We haven't had a lot of draft picks to work with, but the guys we've drafted have been pretty solid. To expect a team to draft gem after gem isn't very realistic.
IMO overall our drafts have been pretty week. Sean Taylor was a no brainer at the pick we got him at. Same with Samuels. But how many top picks have we wasted going for the 'sexy' pick. Falling in love with the next offensive weapon that doesn't pan out instead of going with the safe pick to build our team. How many great wide recievers have we drafted over the years with our top picks that didn't pan out. Yes we have hit on some later round picks, but we have missed on way too many of our 1st thru 3rd round picks. These are the guys that most teams build around. |

Well, I'm not counting this year because it's too early to pass judgement. So with that caveat, I think we've drafted a wide receiver in the first 3 rounds once in the past 13 years |

And he was the last pick in the round. Since that was seven years ago, I'd say the point is bunk that we haven't drafted well at the top of drafts. It's more that we...haven't had picks to get good players with.
And if somebody wanted to make the argument that Ramsey would have been a pro bowler in 2005 had he been the starter, I'd hear it. Before Ramsey, it was Rod Gardner, and now were really dating ourselves. |

I agree it is still too early to pass judgement for this year, but it is not looking good and IMO we shouldn't have used all 3 picks on receivers with so many other needs. Westbrook (1995) and Gardner (2001) and of course Howard just before that. You would think after these 3 we would have learned a lesson. Then we have the QBs (Shuler, Ramsey and Campbell) that 2 were busts and the jury is still out on Campbell. Compare these to the defense players and offensive line guys we took that have all pretty much panned out and you get my point. |
Re: What's Wrong with the Redskins?
Our second round picks have been less fruitful though, ranging from mildly disappointing (Rocky Mac) to full out bust (Taylor Jacobs), with picks like Ladell Betts in between.

Re: What's Wrong with the Redskins?
man, i don't know why we don't see campbells name coming up more. there are plenty of qb's in the league who get just as much pressure as he does. i'm tired of hearing, he's young. one day, we need him to just make a play out of nothin. good, not great qbs do it all the time!!!!

I just wanted to point out that at the time, ALOT of the thoughts were that Gibbs was going to take Kellen Winslow Jr. with that pick. Instead he got ST, and Cooley in the 3rd round. Now that's a good draft! |

The WCO is a minimal blocking scheme the majority of the time. the running backs and fullbacks are expected to catch passes, unless its a 2 tight end set. JC has too slow of a release and cant read defenses quick enough for this offense. He may be a great quarterback somewhere else or in a diffrent scheme, but as long as Zorn is running a WCO scheme, Campbell will always be average |

I agree, I said the first 3 rounds are generally where most teams build their core from and we haven't done that. Yes we have hit on some of these picks, but we missed badly on alot of them also. People tend to forget about the busts and only remember the good picks. We need to get someone in the organization that does alot better job of ranking college players and hits on more of our top picks. We also need to stop trading away picks. |
The bottom line is that the redskins don't match up well with physical teams like the giants, steelers, and cowboys. Lucky, we have a favorable schedule down the stretch, and we can easily finish 10-6 or 11-5 hopefully.
