I'm annoyed by the posters who come on here and say that we shouldn't trade up to get RGIII. Those of you who have posted that have either not seen enough of RGIII or have seen so much of Rex that the horror of it has blinded you. Or, you just plain don't know what you're talking about.
I've seen a lot of college QB's in my 64 years and let me clue you in: RGIII is the TRUTH. We're talking about an instant starter, a true Franchise QB, and, in time, a possible All-Pro. I've even seen where someone on here says he's not an accurate passer. You need to go back and look at some more film on him because RGIII is one of the most accurate deep passers that I have ever seen in college football. The only concern I have about him is that we won't be able to trade up to get him. Here's a summation on RGIII from Walter Football: "1/9/12: Griffin earned his Heisman Trophy and truly was the best player in college football this season as he led Baylor to a 10-win season. Griffin carried Baylor to thrilling wins over Oklahoma, Kansas and TCU. He has displayed a very strong arm and good mobility. His accuracy was phenomenal on passes to the short, intermediate, and deep part of the field. In 2011, Griffin completed 72 percent of his passes for 4,293 yards with 37 touchdowns and six interceptions. He has also rushed for 699 yards and 10 touchdowns. His decision-making was superb."
agreed. Get the kid in here at all costs. This bandaid on the qb position has gone on long enough. Pull the trigger. This years 1st and 3rd, next years 1st and 4th, to move up 3 spots and get our man. Look at the NFC now. You have Rodgers, Brees, Eli Manning, Michael Vick, Matthew Stafford, Sam Bradford, Matt Ryan, Tony Romo, Alex Smith, Jay Cutler, and all are very capable quarterbacks. When do we get one? When is DC going to get a quarterback that the fanbase doesn't have to make excuses for going INTO the game? One that doesnt lead the entire LEAGUE in turnovers? A quarterback that can put some points on the board. One that we can be proud of. We are within striking distance of that pick, and we need to pull the trigger and get RG3 in here. We have a decent enough line, and with a Free agency pickup at wide receiver, our squad is right there. But until the FO goes all in and gets their guy, our franchise will be mired in mediocrity. And that is the long and short of it. |
Re: The "Inside Word" on the QB Search
KI,
I'll be nice... Your comment is absurd, and so you know I'm refering to your comment about other posters not RGIII. I don't doubt he's not the real deal. I don't doubt Luck is the real deal either, but I think those of us whom you are refering to are using reason and common sense in knowing Luck will be gone and quite possibly RGIII also. It will be a huge suprise if he's still there at #6 and if he is then we take him. I'm not one who would like to see the team throw the majority of their picks at just one player when the team has more needs then just one position. I hope he's there but if it's too many picks I'll pass, if he's not too costly then fine let's get him. Otherwise I'm sure we can find someone like a Tom Brady. |

We should go that route because he is better than any other QB prospect, has NFL game experience, and will come at a lower cost. Are you annoyed with me too? |

Let's think about what "any cost" means:
First round picks in 2012, 13, 14 - - plus - - Second round picks in 2012, 13, 14 - - plus - - Orakpo, Kerrigan AND Helu.
Or maybe the Skins should bid even higher if necessary...? Robert Griffin III will likely be a very good QB in the NFL and possibly a multi-time Pro Bowl player. But it is the cost of trading up that has to be weighed here because the Washington Redskins are not merely one player away from "greatness". |

Like you, I don't advocate getting him at any cost. But I also think that the Skins need to be willing to stretch the boundaries of what seems to be reasonable if it will get them a Franchise QB. In today's NFL, which is a pass first league, I just don't think you can expect to win a title without one. We don't need to outbid Mike Ditka. We just need to outbid other reasonable, competent GM's. |
Re: The "Inside Word" on the QB Search
Isn't it funny how the year started off with so many choices at QB and possibilities, and now it has shrunk to just RGIII or free agency?
This is as good as any to explain my basic thesis concerning how the "next years class is always better" theory works in a nutshell. (BTW this isn't directed at you Bushead, I'm just using your post to segway and further my propaganda) Every year you get a bunch of QB's who play like first round QB's. A lot of those QB's are juniors. So when it comes time to declare for the draft the QB's take cues from each other and make business decisions on weather or not they can get picked high enough to justify declaring early. Someone deciding to go back to school like Barkley leads to a guy like RGIII declaring. Landry Jones decides to go back to school so Tyler Wilson strongly considers declaring right up until the last minute. Wondering if he can be a top 10 pick, then decides if he goes back to school he can be a top 5 pick. Afterwards the QB's return for their senior years and a good amount don't put up as good numbers (Jake Locker), or do, but their flaws become more widespread and published in the media (Tim Tebow/Matt Leinart). Other guys get injured (Sam Bradford). Then to make matters worse a bunch of Junior QB's start having breakthrough seasons so people start to list all those QB's for the upcoming draft assuming that they'll all declare, then when about half return to school the class is viewed as weaker then expected and expectations are placed on next years class. The basic formula is this. Long list of QB's that includes juniors likely to return to school + QB's not playing up to expectations during senior year or exposing flaws = Next years class will be better. |
Re: The "Inside Word" on the QB Search
We mortgage 2 years of draft picks for RGIII, so what! It's solidarity at the position for the next 5-10 years. I'm okay with that.
|
Re: The "Inside Word" on the QB Search
If we are able to pick a few key positions in FA like OG, OT, CB, FS, & ILB then trade away our 1st & 2nd this year & next years 1st & 3rd if that's what it takes.
|
Re: The "Inside Word" on the QB Search
I would not trade more than that. In my humble opinion anything more than that is too much for any 1 player. I agree RG3 will most likely be a "franchise qb". What I'm saying is is sign a decent qb free agent then we won't as pressured to sell the farm for 1 player.

If we mortgage the draft and use FA INTELLIGENTLY. No monster contracts, but bring in a #1 receiver at as cheap as possible, unless were convinced we have our guy, in which case throw some money at him. Bring in a secondary receiver like braylon edwards to compete in camp (a lot better than stalworth or stokley as competition) and then we can spend what is left in the draft on our offensive line. Next years draft can center around cornerbacks and replacing fletch. |

I agree, I've stated this in another post, we have to have a contingency plan we have to sign a FA QB otherwise we will be over paying to trade up. I would like to sit a #6 and see if RGIII falls to us. Nobody expected SackPo to fall to us but he did. |
Re: The "Inside Word" on the QB Search
As I've basically been saying before. RGIII is Michael Vick, if Michael Vick had an IQ in the 140 range, was accurate, and wasn't interested in partying all the time. Sure the price to get him will be steep but considering the payoff of 10 plus possible years of stability at the games most important position, not to mention an actual game changer that will strike fear into the hearts of defenses everywhere, well it's hard to be frugal.
Honestly, guys like Landry, Orakpo, Kerrigan, and Williams are nice, but they're supporting pieces. Without a QB we're wasting their prime years. I think that RGIII can have the type of impact that Ovechkin had on the Capitals. |

Hey better then failing in the regular season year after year after year. And as the Colts demonstrated during their time with Manning. Everyone has their price. Some lower then others. I guess I wouldn't have a problem with.... 1st round picks of: 2012, 2013 3rd round pick of: 2012 4th round pick of: 2013 This would spread out our draft picks and still allow us to get decent players both this year and next year. The problem is there are people here who would trade not only their house away but also the furniture inside because they heard the 2012 Corvette will be the best car. If we as fans and I'll somewhat speak for the coaching staff close our minds to all options then we not only will in the end be dissapointed but will remain a mediocre team. All we as fans want and need is a QB who can get the job done not only for now but for the forseeable future, and to get that we don't need to toss in two years worth of draft picks in hopes one player "might" be worth it. Remember last year at this time Locker was the man. Locker was the #1. Locker was going to take his team to whatever promised land. Did he even get to play this year? I can tell you who did better.... obviously Tebow, and a QB who was not supposed to be drafted until the 3rd or 4rth round (Andy Dalton). Dalton being a QB I said we should take and got laughed at and told he wouldn't amount to anything but camp fodder. Personally I think we can get a FA like Flynn and also draft a QB to challenge for the starting position. Bring in a couple of decent weapons at WR and this team will do a lot better especially since the running game started coming together at the end of the year. |
Re: The "Inside Word" on the QB Search
I said it once and I will even give a link this time.... I don't think MS will throw away everything for just one player.
Shanahan mailbag: Skins a '12 contender? - NFC East Blog - ESPN Talking about trading up to get RGIII.... edit: (Luck) but it sounds like it will cost a mint for RGIII also since other QB's have decided to stay in college.
I followed up with a question about the reports and speculation that it could take three No. 1 picks to trade up to the No. 1 spot and take Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck and asked if he considered that realistic or sensible. He responded with a comparison to the 2002 deal in which the Oakland Raiders got two first-round picks, two second-round picks and cash from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for head coach Jon Gruden. MS: I told Jon, 'No offense, but you're not worth that much! And don't go to the place where they're giving up the two No. 1s for you.' I mean, it just handcuffs you. Finally, I asked if he thought his team was close enough to contending that he could afford to give away a big trove of draft picks for one player he really wanted. MS: No. In fact that's why, when we went from 10 to 16 [in last year's draft] and we were able to get that extra second-rounder from Jacksonville, we were able to parlay that where we got [Leonard] Hankerson, we got [Roy] Helu and we got [DeJon] Gomes. So by going from 10 to 16, not only did we get Jarvis Jenkins, but we were able to get those three players. And those are three starters for us.
|
I like to refer to it as not giving away the farm but at the same time being willing to part with a couple of piece of heavy machinery (IE early draft picks). RGIII is a blue chip prospect. An elite QB. With the exception of the 2004 draft with Eli Manning and this year with Andrew Luck I can't really envision another draft over the last 10 years where RGIII wouldn't have been the first QB off the board. Maybe 2007 where JaMarcus Russell was wowing teams with his workouts but RGIII has just as many physical attributes as Russell if not more. Not to mention he's at least a borderline genius, though I'd venture that given the fact that he graduated high school and college early that he is in fact a certifiable genius with an IQ of at least a 140. Who knows, maybe he could beat Fitzpatrick in an academic decathlon. |

Ok how about next year? we really wouldn't know how RG3 will do or would do especially since Barkley will be entering the draft then and I'm almost positive he was ranked #2 behind Luck this year. I also remember a ton of people here saying we had to do whatever we needed to do to get Barkley. Also I'm just guessing but I bet the Bengals and Bronco's are totally upset they were not able to pick up a top 5 QB who could be their franchise QB. |

Cost: Two 1st, One 3rd, and a 5th round pick Net Cost: One 1st, One 3rd, One 5th Cost: 1st Round Pick, Next years 3rd Round Pick, 2nd Round Pick two years from draft day, Player Net Cost: 3rd Round Pick, 2nd Round Pick, Player Cost: 1st and 2nd Round Pick and three players. Net Cost: 2nd Round Pick, Three Players Then again the Falcons may have screwed up the curve Cost: Two 1st, One 2nd, Two 4ths
Great research and post.. THe biggest difference in the last Falcons trade was the distance they had to move.. The Chargers/Giants deal would probably be the closest approximate cost to move to #3. The whole 'moving to #2' is a little overblown IMO because the Vikings are no risk to take RGIII. |

Re: The "Inside Word" on the QB Search
If the Browns draft RGIII what does everyone feel about trading 1 of our 4th round picks for Colt McCoy, if that was enough for the Browns to trade him? I would be all for it, he is still young and has potential to be good. He came from the Browns who don't have very much talent on offense, so I think he would be more capable with the Skins and the talent we add this off season. He has the mobility that Shanny likes. Then we would have our young starting quarterback plus # 6 overall pick and 6 other selections. I haven't seen this discussed anywhere. Then we could still draft another qb such as my guy Kirk Cousins, to completely re-do our qb situation.

No on trading for Colt. If the Browns did draft RGIII (which at this point a lot of what I'm reading suggest they won't) then I would rather either see if Blackmon falls to us and then see how to acquire Tannehill or Foles or trade back and draft Tannehill or Foles. And I wouldn't worry about the Seahawks drafting Tannehill in a trade back because if the Browns take RGIII and we still need a QB then chances are Flynn is in Seattle. Still I would be more upset that they didn't pay the price to trade up for RGIII.
Great research and post..
What you want to fight?
