Interesting article about how the Redskins are one of the worst teams in the NFL when it comes to using analytics for football operations. Has always been that way under Snyder.

"The Redskins were named by source after source as the NFL team with the least interest in using analytics in football operations. Despite Washington's massive operation on the business side, there is no analytics chief on the football side.

That wasn't true for seven weeks in 2006, when the Redskins hired Jeff Dominitz to produce statistical analysis. But then-coach Joe Gibbs indicated his disdain for analytics, saying, "We're still about people here." Soon Dominitz was gone.

The recent five-year GM tenure of Bruce Allen was likewise not an era of analytics for Washington, and there are no signs that will change anytime soon with Allen as team president. New GM Scot McCloughan comes from San Francisco, a team close to the front edge of analytics usage in the NFL, but he has a scouting background and has given no indications of an analytics-friendly approach.

With Daniel Snyder as owner since 1999, Washington has become known for inefficient spending, consistently handing out some of the worst contrasts in the NFL. Based in part on such moves, the Patriots have had unmatched success in the Belichick era, with four Super Bowl rings and counting.

On the field, Belichick's approach appears less consistent. His failed fourth-down gambit against the Colts in 2009 was decried by fans but cheered by analysts who recommend that teams play more aggressively. But in other cases, he has coached rather conservatively, defying his reputation.

Regardless, there is little doubt that the Patriots invest time and energy looking for every edge, and their commitment to ruthlessly outsmarting the competition is a Belichick trademark."

My feeling is its a tool that we should be using and frankly surprised we dont have a couple folks who its in part of their job description. Data can do nothing but help in making strategic decisions. We are certainly behind the curve....

Some of these are really cool, like the Raiders and the Patriots' helmets, but the Eagles helmet looks like it has gills, and I don't like the concept for the Redskins' helmet. I liked the earlier concept with the yellow and present chief head logo.

I actually like a number of these. The Vikings one isn't great -- looks like a beanie with pigtails. And the Steelers logo being all yellow seems like a step backwards. The lines on the Rams helmet seem a little odd to me -- not sure what is inspiring that, and I could say the same about the triangles on the Chiefls helmet, although I think it looks cool. I think the Giants helmet with the city skyline is pretty cool. The Raiders helmet is a real upgrade.

I've lived in Pittsburgh and Baltimore and i think those industrial-looking helmets would go over well with the fans there. Personally, I really like the Ravens version.

The Raiders helmet is a home run. I love it.

As for the Jets helmet, well at least they tried. When a team has the official colors of baby poop green and diaper white, it's hard to do anything appealing.

This is what means something to me in that article: "There has been talk that the Browns could trade up — they have two first-round picks for the second straight year — in order to select Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota."

I'd take their two first round picks (12 and 19) for #5. Then they can draft Mariota and we can draft two stud linemen.

Kelly is so arrogant -- he seems to think he can score points with anyone on offense, after creating questions at QB (Foles v. Mariota), WR (jettisoning DeSean, not yet re-signing Maclin), and now RB (trading Shady). Would love to see their O drop to the bottom half of the league.

This makes me think he's going to go after Mariota -- hes probably thinking that Mariota will account for 800 rushing yards next year.

A lot of people blasting Philly for this move. As a fan in their division I don't like it. McCoy was terrible last year. They traded a RB, granted a very good one, for an extremely talented LB. The big thing here is their cap. McCoy was going to make what, 30ish million over the next 2 years? Alonso 1.5 million? Thats an extra 28.5 they get to spend. They'll go to the draft and get another RB, especially this year.

Now they have the room to go get someone like a Mike Ipuitati (sp?) and/or a Suh. People we don't want to see. They got rid of a RB with declining production for an injured LB. I consider the two players about even. I think the cap savings is really big, especially after they cut Ryans.
