It's not a fuckin argument, it's a fuckin fact. Look at the numbers home vs away. It's wildly disproportionate. Yes starts with Jay, everything starts with Jay. But cousins needs to play better on the road
Road: NYG (5-5), Falcons (6-3), Jets (5-4), Patriots (9-0) Home: Rams (4-5), Eagles (4-5), Bucs (4-5), Saints (4-6) Then it is also FACT that the teams we played on the road all have winning records, and at home do not. Our road record is bad in part because the road games were harder than the home games. Look, if you don't like Kirk, you don't like Kirk. Only time will tell if he's going to be legit, but the reality is he's played well the last 3 games, and 4 out of the past 5. |

We beat teams with a combine record of 16-21. We haven't beat a team with a winning record. Cousins only win on the road was Cleveland in 2012. lets pump our brakes and nobody is saying cousins isn't the future. The main reason he is we have zero better options. FA and draft looks bleak with QB. Im for Cousins as the starter next year, but lets chill out a little bit. |

I think you're cherry picking stats just like the fictional "3rd quarter" problem the media harped on before. There is nothing magical about road games. It's different, for sure, but I don't buy the premise that he falls apart on the road. We almost won the Falcons game minus the Grant slip-up.

Middle of the pack, and on the come. Again, no reason to rush into a decision now, but with the way it's going we'd probably be crazy to let him go.
I wouldn't rely solely on this information. Nobody thinks Ryan Fitzpatrick is a long term answer. But this definitely illustrates progress. Total QBR - 2015 Thru Week 10 1 Carson Palmer, ARI 82 2 Ben Roethlisberger, PIT 74 3 Tom Brady, NE 72 4 Andy Dalton, CIN 72 5 Aaron Rodgers, GB 71 6 Drew Brees, NO 71 7 Ryan Fitzpatrick, NYJ 70 8 Eli Manning, NYG 69 9 Jay Cutler, CHI 69 10 Brian Hoyer, HOU 68 11 Tyrod Taylor, BUF 66 12 Matt Ryan, ATL 65 13 Philip Rivers, SD 64 14 Derek Carr, OAK 64 15 Teddy Bridgewater, MIN 64 16 Kirk Cousins, WSH 60 17 Russell Wilson, SEA 57 18 Blake Bortles, JAX 56 19 Marcus Mariota, TEN 56 20 Jameis Winston, TB 56 21 Cam Newton, CAR 53 22 Josh McCown, CLE 53 23 Alex Smith, KC 50 24 Matthew Stafford, DET 50 25 Andrew Luck, IND 48 26 Colin Kaepernick, SF 47 27 Joe Flacco, BAL 47 28 Peyton Manning, DEN 45 29 Sam Bradford, PHI 37 30 Ryan Tannehill, MIA 35 31 Nick Foles, STL 33 |
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
No reason at this point to think we can't move forward with Cousins. Of course the last 7 games will help see things more clearly, but he's at least trending in the right direction.
Starting over (again) doesn't make much sense especially when you see what's out there for free agents/draft. |

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
Yeah. And like if we step back and look at the league overall, who are the QBs on the list there where you'd say they're rising and could become something?
You'd have to mention Winston, Mariota, Derek Carr, Bortles and you couldn't leave Cousins out of that. None of those teams would give up on their guys yet, and we shouldn't either. Unless Kirk tanks over the next 7 games. But I don't think that happens. |
Cousins has proved himself to be a starter in the league. I would have no problem giving him middle of the pack starter money at this point. I'm willing to bet on the progress we have seen- and move on to build around him. IMO GM SM devalues the QB position relative to the rest of the league. He can live with that kind of contract as long as both sides are not too far apart and focus his resources on the draft. I see us taking a flyer on a QB in the mid-later rounds to serve as a backup. I love where this team is headed. |

good article, cant really complain about that type of money. Again, what other options do we really have. none |
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
Agree completely. KC has been an average QBR -- but has shown some promise. Heck, he's made Redskins history in two of the past 3 weeks. He could fail horribly for the rest of the season, but from what I've seen, he seems to be getting better with more experience. He does better when Reed and Jackson are on the field. Who knows where he ends up, just need to play it out.
Of note, look at the QBs below him on that QBR list: Newton, Luck, Flacco, Wilson, Manning, Stafford.. |

Luck's been injured and his offensive line has been bad - everyone understands he's one of the best QB prospects moving forward, no matter what the numbers say. Russell Wilson, same thing. That line has been a sieve this year. But yeah still, Cousins is proving he can play in this league. Keep improving personnel around him and he might be able to move that QBR from 60 to 70, then we really have something going. Basically just stay the McCloughan course. |
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
I've watched Cam play quite a bit this year and I think his lack of recievers is hurting his QBR. He has been playing really good football this year. My eyes tell me Cam has been a better QB than most this season. (boy I cant stand that dude either lol)

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
Kirk played pretty well in the first half of the season given the injuries and lack of the run game. Now that we have our full compliment of weapons, gruden said we were able to open up the entire playbook against the saints.
im wondering if 2-3 games from now, when coordinators have enough film of what our entire offense is supposed to look like, coordinators may be able to scheme better. im interested to see what our success looks like when d coordinators have enough film to scheme and adjust to our full playbook .. assuming everyone stays healthy so our playbook can stay completely open. |

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
The good teams have a veteran that is great or good enough, and they have a young guy on the bench to groom/develop for the future. So the transition when the veteran's time is up is not a bad transition.
I think we might have found the first part, an average/adequate veteran to get us through. Now we need to find the young gun QB to groom/develop for the future. I think where the shitty teams screw up is they throw the young guy in too soon because of the pressure to win because they are shitty. |

Unfortunately the Saints D is so bad is hard to tell what we did well vs what they did wrong. finally we werent handicapped or scheming to mask our deficiencies and injuries etc. .. i just wonder if after a few more games and more film we wont see D coordinators adjusting and we have some offensive production regression. it will be interesting to watch going forward but this offense is different then the offense the past 7 games and last year imo. different in a good way. great way. as long as we stay healthy, no excuses for the last 7 games. all the pieces are in place. prove yourself. |

I don't think those numbers are realistic. He is the best free agent QB and someone will probably overpay for him. Alex Smiths contract is going to be the starting point ( 4Y @ $68M ) since they have similar play styles. The wildcard in all this is the Eagles. Bradford and KC are both UFA at the end of the year. If they like KC more, they could overpay him and weaken a division rival at the same time. I'm going to predict Denver will make a run at him and offer him $17M a year over 5 years. |

I will be extremely surprised if he doesn't negotiate in good faith exclusively with McCloughan, and arrive at a fair market based deal. McCloughan has a way of getting guys to sign for market price because he'll go with a 3 year offer and pledge to Cousins that if he plays even better, he'll reward him even more. Cousins will buy in, McCloughan is extremely good with establishing and maintaining player relationships. |
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
I know we have 16mil assigned to the QB spot next year, plus you figure the draft will be providing our backup (though I hear Weeden would be available). I am very confident that these next 2 weeks will go a long way toward figuring out what portion of that 16mill will get taken up keeping KC here or bringing in an older vet (not that there are any that I want). I would think a 4 yr contract that gives him life changing money (1mill base, 14 mil signing bonus, plus escalators and incentives that work out to around 15mil years 2-4) would be about what it takes to sign KC. If he falls flat in the NYG game though, he would drop a lot, because he has to get past them once before he is signed long term.

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
McCoy is a good backup. Especially if you think Kirk is the guy going forward for 10 years.
It's not inconceivable to think a QB who doesn't get sacked or hit a lot can't play for till he's 38 39. |

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
With Kirk it is mainly now about avoiding the valleys. He doesn't need to be Aaron Rodgers or Brady out there in order for the team to win the way we seem to be building the squad.
There are always going to be the 2-3 games a season where you are facing some really tough defenses and I don't think anyone expects him to look like an all pro in those games, but he just needs to limit mistakes when possible and try to find ways to win an ugly game. The upcoming game against Carolina is a good example. They are a very good team this season but they aren't unbeatable. In fact I think they are a bit ripe for the picking from a team exactly like ours that is slowly becoming respectable but still not on most folks' radars yet as a "threat" |

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
Excellent point about the valleys, those are the bugaboo for Kirk. Avoiding those down the stretch would be a major step in the right direction.
Again, we don't have to make a decision yet. But assuming Kirk doesn't tank down the stretch, if I'm McCloughan I might try to get him for 12M per year over three years, but almost all of it guaranteed. Give him security but still make him earn a huge pay day. I'd add a player option for year 4 that vests if he achieves certain incentives, and that salary could be 20M. You don't want to overcommit but you want to show willingness to take care of him. Again, decide later. Wait and see on this stretch run. |

But like Matty, I disagree that the offense is different.
I don't think the offense has changed very much. The passing concepts are the same (i.e. quick passing WCO largely dependent on run after the catch) Schematically in the run game they're very straight forward about 1st down formations, personnel and play calls (runs). Kirk was very sharp and the Saints defense put up no fight. PFF pointed out that 80% of the passing yards came after the catch. Which is a huge jump from the previously league worst YPA. I'm curious what differences you've noticed? Maybe I've missed something...the main differences I saw are finally there are runs from shotgun spread formations on 2nd down (not many but some is better then none). Lol, the crazy part is the Saints bit on our shotgun playaction it was awesome to watch. The second schematic difference I noticed is breaking their personnel based run tendencies e.g. by passing to Alfred Morris it makes it less of dead 'run' give away when he's in the game. They also threw more RBs screens then usual (which I like). But, going back to your earlier point I agree Jay/McVay have all the pieces in place. They're fully stocked. Its time to see what they got. |

30 - my use of the word "different" was lazy for the part you quoted. our offense didnt seem different, its not a different scheme and we still ran exclusively out 1 back sets. my other comments re. "now able to open up the entire playbook" were more accurate.
your observations i 100% agree with, you answered it better then i could: "the main differences I saw are finally there are runs from shotgun spread formations on 2nd down (not many but some is better then none). We did a lot of screens, a lot of shotgun looks, a lot of half assed PA looks out of shotgun, we didnt attempt as many go routes as i thought but we had that one sideline one early to desean which was so nice to finally see. good call on screens to morris, i didnt think of that. the run game and giving alf the ball 15 times was nice. of course we were finally able to do that bc we were getting 3-5 yards and not sitting at 2nd and 9 a bunch of times allowing us to run more than once per set of downs. YAC - i actually checked our YAC 2 weeks ago bc i thought Cousins YPA was being disproportionately lowered bc of the lack of down field passing and it seemed our guys would never break a short pass for a long gain (like jones 70+ screen), garcon is basically a catch it and lower head kind of receiver, no desean ... but i was surprised to see we were at 15 or 16th in the NFL in YAC at that time. i thought we would be lower, a lot lower. for me, i want to see run get back on track. production against the saints D means nothing to me. i want to see Kirk throw it 28 times or less every game. if that happens, that means our offense is staying on track. getting 2-5 yards on 1st down is huge imo for this offense. it allows us to call any play - run, PA, 5-7 step drop down field pass etc ... |

Cousins was so good that Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan got fired the next day. What do you get for this? a 10k check? a piece of nice paper with nice squiggly writing on it? |
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
I think the biggest difference against the Saints was the running game was working which helped setup the pass and play action. Also, for the first time forever, screen passes were producing big yardage.
The offense itself though wasn't different. This is a WCO through and through, which traditionally is not about downfield passing. Go watch clips of the 49ers under Walsh. Montana was a a surgeon with how he delivered the ball to WR's in space so short completions would turn into long gains. It is very similar to the Pats offense. 3 step drops, quick passes, looking for mis-matches. THAT is what a WCO is. With that said, many coordinators through the years have modified the WCO to add in more deep passing, depending on the personnel. For example, with Jackson and Reed (and hopefully eventually Ross) you are going to have the opportunity to take shots downfield and the hope is that the few times a game you get them, you take advantage because it further opens up space underneath. My biggest concern earlier in the season watching the offense was what would happen when we played teams that were able to make tackles at the point of the catch. There were a lot of passes where the WR's were stopping to make the catch, or the throw would dictate them needing to stop, turn around, etc etc....it could have been timing issues, still learning the offense, fundamentally sound defense from opponents etc etc etc.... Also in a WCO the run game is used almost as an extension of the passing game, which is why a guy like Matt Jones is so important because he can take screen passes to the house with his speed and acceleration. |

I believe how the run game is called and implemented effects the productivity or lack thereof. Imo sometimes the "negative" runs are a result of the playcalling. We actually did get DY on the field for some runs, we actually did run the ball on 2nd down and from spread shotgun. Those changes imo positively impact the run game. Also there was a stretch of where they called 5 straight runs. Meaning they stuck with the run. Of course it easier to stick with the run when its "working". Its much harder to do what they Jets did a few weeks ago in a win (23 runs for 26 yards). Many people will say that is terrible well....even those "failed" runs did 2 things..(1) control the clock for up to 13 minutes, that's huge to a defense (2) it sets up play-action. But I digress..............It also helped that the Saints defense...well....sucked...sucks.. But, I'm with you. Lets really, truly embrace the run game as our way forward.
... but i was surprised to see we were at 15 or 16th in the NFL in YAC at that time. i thought we would be lower, a lot lower.
That doesn't surprise me really. The league worst YPA is imo more a result of the depth of the throws attempted. Jay's offense is imo overly dependent upon throwing the ball quick. Quick usually= short. The receivers aren't going to have time to get downfield, therefore whatever YAC they get is gonna generate less YPA then a deeper throw would. |

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
We are a short timing pattern pass offense(ie west coast), we are not a run first offense. Won't be under JG, and truthfully Matt Jones can excel in the short game. People who want KC to throw under 30-35 times a game are not going to be happy, unless of course we start winning.
