No one thinks Trent sits out another year.
Tough call, this is all future hypothetical speak right now so who really knows. I think its 60% he doesnt report at all if not traded, 40% he does at week 8 or whatever the cut off is to have the season accrue. I just dont see him reporting week 1 and wanting to suit up. Id rather take 2 3Rs vs "hoping" he reports week 1. What if he doesnt report until week 8 ... that would be a major misplay of our poker hand imo .. all for the hope a 2R and 3R vs 2 3Rs. Payoff is not worth the risk imo. If all you can get is 2 3rs, id take it if that is the best offer we have by say mid August. Get the best offer you can and move on. |

I don't play cards but I would play against a good percentage of the people on this page. Give it some time.

He would be cutting off his nose to spite his face - exactly what Bruce Allen did last year by refusing to budge. As to taking two 3Rs now to hedge against Trent not showing up week 1 - that would be very short sighted. A teams starting LT could be hurt during training camp or early on in the season, in which case the price goes up. If we're not getting offers of fair value (minimum of a second), then there is no urgency to take pennies on the dollar prior this far in advance of the trade deadline. And if Trent really wanted to be out ASAP, he could agree to take a smaller contract from his new team in exchange for them agreeing to providing proper compensation. |
Re: Trent Williams ends season-long holdout, rejoins Redskins
If he's getting all his advice from his agent, he should seriously consider moving on from him. It's like he continues to think he's playing from a position of power. Perhaps you could have made a case for that a year ago, but certainly not now. I don't care what he gets for a future contract elsewhere, but I do care about what the Redskins get back in a trade. I'm positive that is what the Redskins are thinking as well. He either finds a trade that makes sense for the team, or get ready for OTAs.

I guess Im out of the info loop because was under the impression the only thing being reported was Trent agent saying hes excited to play for a new team with a change of scenery.
I did not know it was being reported that he would report and play this year if he isnt traded. Any links? |
Re: Trent Williams ends season-long holdout, rejoins Redskins
So you create a line in the sand for offers from other teams.
As an example, i would say that if you cant get a 2nd before the draft, you hold out until after the draft. I think his value fluctuates based on unforeseen league-wide variables we cant yet predict. 2 3rd rounders is a joke. That's offensive line depth, and we need to get a starter out of Trent's trade value. I'm sorry, that's the truth. That dude is going to play 5 more years about 75% of the time healthy at an elite level. |
Re: Trent Williams ends season-long holdout, rejoins Redskins
Except:
- he wont report or play for us next year (safe assumption) - next year therefore will not count as accrued so he wont be FA eligible - we then are in the same boat we are in now, except hes another year older - even if he leaves in FA, a comp pick is not guaranteed bc we would have to make sure we dont sign an offsetting FA We can continue to act like Bruce Allen or we can take the best offer and move on.
The way I see it, and even though I'd love this situation to be solved as quickly as possible, the Skins have the leverage : TW is not in a position to sit out another year, and if he plays he'll want to put the best tape possible out there. Plus if he really was ready to sit out, the Skins have the threat of franchise tagging him in 2021... is he gonna sit that season out too ? Trent is going to be 32 at the beginning of this season, 34 at the beginning of the 2022 season, which is how far this team could drag this thing if they wanted to. He'll play next year. Either for a team ready to give us solid compensation, or for us. |

What do you think of the idea of trading Trent to the Browns for their 23 year old TE Njoku (and maybe a pick)?

You never take the first tentative offer (Jets two 3rd round picks).
We can do better. No trades for players. We want at least a second rounder for Trent - he’s worth it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I'd say keep him, there's a chance that 2 3rd round players never start for you, but Trent next year will be a solid to elite starter at one of the most important positions. I think in that case, it's the old bird in the hand... |

Yeah ..... i think im the only person who thinks he doesnt report or reports week 8, if he is not traded. Hes not reporting to TC or week 1, imo. I think he is traded though, even if its 2 3Rs, so we wont get to a week 1 watch. |

RR and TW had a couple of good talks. But TW let RR know there was a part that was money related. After these talks, RR said something like "TW you were and can be again an important part of Redskins heritage, but I get it, you want security. We will let you and your agent go out and see what you can do, we won't hold you back, but we do expect fair compensation (mid 2nd or better) based on what you could be for us. Remember, the door is open if you change your mind.' By being open, straightforward, and clear on what the Redskins thoughts are (and I think RR was) then it gives TW confidence the culture is changing - and gives him time to evaluate what his next step is, including coming back to the Redskins for another year. |

I was specifically adressing whether TW would hold out if not traded, and that I think RR had a way that he could approach TW so if he is NOT traded, he still won't hold out again. Not to mention the 14Million he would be giving up.

If we trade TW I'd definitely sign Penn back, he's slow but played better than expected IMO. The left side of our OL was supposed to be the weak link and ended up outperforming a disappointing right side. |

Agreed.. That's the reason why I'm open to bringing Penn back for one more year if we don't have an opportunity to draft a LT in 1st or 2nd round with a pick we get for Williams, we can draft another LT in mid-late round and have Penn mentor the rookie. And no thanks to Peter, he cannot stay healthy for a full season. |

Penn was an emergency bandaid. He did ok but could be porous. Because Moses and to a lesser extent Scherff were ALSO having trouble, he wasn’t noticed as much as he could have been. Penn’s too old and the team must move forward. Kyle Smith will draft at least 2-5 OT from the draft and UDFA to get a possible rookie starter. The team may bring in a good but older (30-32) OT FA for a very short contract, in case the best rookie LT isn’t ready at the start of the season. I think the second and third round picks will go toward TE, WR before OT, but they’ll overcome that with numbers of picks including UDFA. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

According to Sportrac, there are 9 left tackles in the free agency and the top 2 - Andrew Whitworth and Anthony Castonzo are likely to resign with their teams. Andrew Whitworth Anthony Castonzo Kelvin Beachum Greg Robinson (will be suspended from NFL at some point) Jason Peters Chris Clark Cedric Ogbuehi Dakota Dozier Cornelius Lucas Again, I'm not saying that Penn would be great replacement if and when we trade Williams away but I think he might be the best choice out of all available tackles. Peters is a good player but unreliable, he had numerous of injuries that forced him to miss games. |

Re: Trent Williams ends season-long holdout, rejoins Redskins
Obviously aside from Robinson and Peters, would any of those guys be equivalent to/even just a small upgrade over Penn, and have salary in the same range or less? Why stick with the band aid for one more year when you could at least get an equivalent younger guys and possibly cheaper too?

Re: Trent Williams ends season-long holdout, rejoins Redskins
LT - I think the surest way is to draft your own in the first maybe second round, if you want an anchor for the next 8 years or so. A large percent of the top tier LTs are 1-2 round picks.
FA it seems you can get an aging vet as a 1 year stop gap. Maybe you get lucky like the Rams when they signed a 35 year old Whitworth in FA in 2017 for 3/66M ... and hes been a stud for them, played in like 47 of 48 games. Now hes 38 and they have his replacement, a 3R pick from a few years ago. Tough call for the Rams, to turn that offense over to a relative untested LT .. but Whit is 38 and they have cap ramifications. |

Re: Trent Williams ends season-long holdout, rejoins Redskins
That sounds like pure journalistic speculation, I thought Conklin was a RT anyway, and not a great one, apparently always needed help in pass protection .... there are two things about free agency, no FA OL is cheap, and very few are actually any good.

Dang, Id be all for Conklin. A young solid T, the only issue would be his transition for RT to LT .. im guessing he perhaps played LT when Lewan was suspended for PEDs. Conklins do not hit FA very often. |
