Gilead Sciences’s remdesivir is the first treatment to pass such a strict test against the virus, which has killed more than 218,000 people since it emerged late last year in China. Having a treatment could have a profound effect on the global pandemic, especially because health officials say any vaccine is likely a year or more away. The study, run by the National Institutes of Health, tested remdesivir versus usual care in 1,063 hospitalized coronavirus patients around the world. At the White House, NIH’s Dr. Anthony Fauci said the drug reduced the time it takes patients to recover by 31% — 11 days on average versus 15 days for those just given usual care. Great news |

Corona particles small enough to slip through N95 masks.
Had a co worker tell me the other day that the particles are small enough to not be stopped by N95 masks. She rattled off the size of the virus particle vs sizes of particles various masks prevent. I imagine I’m going to go down the rabbit hole of reading articles today. I’m starting to think I’m better off with a multi layered homemade cloth mask vs my N95 ————— Lawnmower broke a month ago, front yard is almost up to my knees. Going to Home Depot, May just buy a push mower but them fuckers are fucking like $80, I might as well drop 120 for a small electric or gas mower. I have a very small townhouse yard so something normal size would be too much. The first time I’ve gone anywhere besides the grocery or beer store. Hope all is well with everyone. |

This scientific breakthrough has three key parameters: The antibody is monoclonal, new and refined, and contains an exceptionally low proportion of harmful proteins; the institute has demonstrated the ability of the antibody to neutralize the coronavirus; 3 the antibody was specifically tested on the aggressive coronavirus. “Based on comprehensive scientific publications from around the globe, it appears that the IIBR is the first institution to achieve a scientific breakthrough that meets all three of the aforementioned parameters simultaneously,” the Defense Ministry said in a statement on behalf of the institute. Re: Coronavirus (non political)
I am starting to become inconvenienced by the virus in ways I could not imagine. The worst is now not using the post office for shipping transit times that used to be 2-3 days now have stretched up to 2 weeks. So now I will make a 90 minute round trip to Fedex up to 3 times a week.
The thing that got me yesterday was going to Harbor Freight. I got the last 25 pounds of aluminum oxide. I was expecting to leave with a couple hundred pounds of various types blasting media. When I inquired why a normal fully stocked section was stripped clean I was told the store had not seen a delivery truck in 3 weeks. All their warehouses were shut down for cleaning. They said a truck was due Thursday so I suppose I will go back Friday. Extra shopping trips are a big deal to me as anything other than groceries is a 60 mile round trip. |

I had posted earlier about I got off Facebook because of all the drama and hypocrisy and conspiracy theories about the virus but if this doesn’t scream some kind conspiracy I don’t know what does,I mean wtf? You don’t just “fall” out a window, and a top researcher is murdered when allegedly was near a breakthrough? I’m not saying I believe anything is going on,what I’m saying is this is weird and this just adds fuel to the fire to some of these theories.
I am trying to play it safe, but I refuse to wear gloves and a mask in public. I went into a supermarket for the first time in 2 weeks as the mom and pop markets around me don't sell Cyrstal Light or similar drink mixes. I didn't check the TP, but it was obvious a lot of items were still being hoarded. For an early afternoon, late morning it was way more crowded than normal. I saw quite a few people almost jumping out of the way when someone got closer to six feet. It does appear the people around me are losing it.
It seems so strange to me to open a UPS package with shop supplies and spraying the things in containers with disinfectant and putting them away. Also trying to remember how long items that can't be disinfected have been here so I can stop washing my hands after I touch them. Worse thing is it supposedly it lives 7 days on plastic. So seriously how are you supposed to handle a loaf of bread? Pretty hard to get a slice out without touching the plastic. I have just been grilling my sandwiches. No sure how much that helps.
So you wear them in private? I dont wear gloves but def wear the mask, when I get back to car I immediately put on hand sanitizer. I think it's just gonna cause the US to shut down again with that kind of attitude,I see too many people not giving a shit, you may not care if you get it but the next guy might that you're inadvertently passing it onto, just my opinion. All the states that have started to open up are seeing the numbers go up,I fear another shutdown in the future |

From the 4th paragraph: Evidence is mounting that masks — if worn in public places, by everyone — are far more effective at stopping transmission than was previously realized. Across the nation, testing remains wholly inadequate, but home-use nasal swabs and saliva tests are on the way that may provide a clearer picture of where the virus is. |
Re: Coronavirus (non political)
If any good comes from all this I hope that as a country we adopt wearing a mask in public when we're not feeling well like they do in Asian countries.
|
Re: Coronavirus (non political)
The problem with expanded testing - and I am not specifically saying don't do it - is it gives the media "scare" numbers. I would rather the focus be on ICU and total bed usage - that is the key statistic, not how many people have a mild or unrealized case of it.
the site worldometer has a projections page for each US State, Maryland's is linked here: https://covid19.healthdata.org/united-states-of-america/maryland , if their numbers are right, currently Md is experiencing a 3 to 1 shortage of ICU beds, with the projection being that by Jun 1st we would be back within operating capacity, they also show that Md is currently has an overall surplus of 1 1/2 times total bed capacity. I am not saying any of this to make bold recommendations. My only point is that the number of positive tests is more likely to drive fear than rational behavior. |

And I think they can be done as a fashion statement too. Those neck scarf/mask things can be done well. Was thinking of getting a Redskins one if I can find one that's not too gaudy. |

I was just talking about this to my buddy this morning. Not only do they wear masks in Asian countries when they aren't feeling well, they wear them in public areas commonly, just as part of their culture. One thing i think changes permanently among Americans, is that we wear masks in public from now on. I would think at some point in malls and stuff, that wearing masks is a permanent requirement. |
Re: Coronavirus (non political)
I don't see masks being mandatory once this is over, people can barely handle it now with a good reason to wear one

Re: Coronavirus (non political)
Honestly masks aren’t even ultra necessary if you social distance and dont put your hands in your mouth. I wear one if i have to go grocery shopping but if everyone followed the damn arrows in the aisles I probably would not. You just cant pick your nose or your teeth! Well maybe after you wash your hands....

The fall out from this is going to get a lot worse as people's habits change. A lot of businesses that weathered the initial storm won't survive the collateral damage. About the only thing I changed spending wise is staying out of chain grocery stores, because the way people act, the hoarding, people that freak out when someone gets in their space, etc, etc. The mom & pop stores around me are business as usual, not that crowded and adding items as demand dictates. Most are stocked up better than they were pre-pandemic. I have to drive further and make more stops and of course prices are higher. I may keep that behavior for a long time. |

That was on my list of things that i imagined would be permanently changed / lost, along with movie theaters, amusement parks, etc., due to people's fear. I do believe that this virus isn't the "Big One", but it will be the one that changes the way we live our life forever. We will get used to the "new normal" and people as always will exist and find a way, but i think a lot of the "old way" will be gone forever. |

I would bet a million bucks this isnt permanent but among a very few amount of people, hell were in the middle of a frickin pandemic and here in Houston since things have started opening I would say it's 50-50 on mask wearing. Now if the shit hits the fan and the Country shuts down again, then maybe people will get the message, but I still doubt it would make it permanent. At my place of employment{Independently owned retail store}the owners are having the 3 salespeople wear mask when waiting on customers, but if it gets busy and the owners have to wait on someone they rarely put a mask on,and as soon as customers leave everyones mask come off and theres no social distancing.Up until today I was only one still wearing my mask full time but today I said screw it,it's not gonna do any good if no one else is doing it. They all think I'm nuts for still wearing mine:censored: What I dont understand is the owners just lost all this business, took out loan and kept paying us yet they dont want to wear mask or care because they dont believe the virus is that bad{for healthy person} and the mask are uncomfortable,so here we are spreading it around as much as possible just hastening the return of another shutdown which would most likely put us out of bizness, doesnt make sense to me |

Just have her strip naked in your garage, put her clothes in the wash machine and then hit the shower. You will have to watch to make sure she cleans herself properly. Of course most would think that is going too far on a first date, but we all must be safe, that has to be the new normal. |

Any time I have had to venture past the mom and pop stores into larger cities for business supplies it seems to me things are just as crowded as ever as a whole. Fredricksburgh Va, is just as crowded as ever and then some. Traffic on HWY 95 does seem lighter. |
